6:07 am
the last sunny day. 50 in hayward. clouds increase throughout the afternoon. similar to what we saw on monday. basically, we are going to start out mostly clear after the fog breaks up and lifts apart. we see sunshine come through and the clouds move in, the breeze picks up. we are only going to see the 70s. 73 in san jose. seven day out look, rain on the way. 62 degrees. cool on monday. san francisco will struggle to break out of the 50s tuesday. wednesday, 64 degrees. showers move in. another round of rain and finally, we warm up. 75 by thursday. overall, kind of one of the last minute spring storms. we need the water. maybe you need to check the water in your vehicle. anything broken down out there, mike? >> we have unusual slowing. right here, 101 northbound speeds are in their 40s. that's the yellow stretch under

6:12 am
we appreciate it. cathy jackson joins me outlet here as well. you really benefit from this event. >> this is a fantastic food drive. it's fabulous. it's the largest drive in the country. last year, nationally, 77 million pounds of food were donated in one day. here in the bay area, more than 1 million pounds of food in one day. we are going to blast through that record. >> we could use the help. >> we could. a lot of people think about the food bank around the holidays. hunger is a 12 month a year problem. our stocks are running low. this is a really, really valuable time to give food. >> if you don't know how to do it, go through your pantry. you put them in a bag like this. this is a great example. put them out by, i guess your mailbox. how tough is it for you? on top of delivering the mail

good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are waking up in san jose this morning, the biggest city
6:20 am
in the area. like many cities in the state, it's facing a budget crisis. over $100 million in debt and looming layoffs for city departments. we talked earlier to the police chief about the potential layoffs coming to his department in light of the homicide rate rapidly going up. we are joined by city councilman sam this morning to talk of all that's going on in this city. good morning and thanks for joining us. >> good morning, laura and thanks for having me. >> you know, sam, san jose for a long time has been known as the safest city in the area. with the rising homicide rates, we have seen 20 this year, we surpassed the numbers from last year, i believe. is our reputation in danger? >> no, we'll continue to be the safest big city in the state. i'm confident that despite the recent events, at the end of the
6:21 am
year, we will continue to be one of the safest cities in america. >> we want to keep it that way. you know of the looming layoffs in the department and additional ones coming to the police department as well. it seems the high cost of pensions continues to be a concern. i know they are negotiating with the unions now. you try to get through now, but what do you do about the future and the pensions? >> you are right. nobody wants to see a single police officer be escorted to the door. we need every officer like every big city in america. we can either pay people to work or pay them to retire. right now, we are paying police officers to retire in their early 50s with an average pension of $103,000 with free health insurance. it's not sustainable. >> so, that could certainly help the deficit. any other ideas? >> well, fixing the retirement
6:22 am
challenge is really the elephant in the room. negotiations now and in the next couple years. it's not going to be an easy one. there are legal restrictions on what you can and can't do. in this case, we have police union leader who is get it and understand the budget problems. there are legal restrictions about what they can agree to. >> sam, i know you have been in the area for some time. you are a former prosecutor, as well. i don't want to make it all negative in the south bay. why do you love living here? >> i love living in san jose because of the 300 days of sun a year. the wonderfully diverse and really talented and creative group of people we have living here in san jose in the heart of silicon valley. every day is exciting and a new challenge here and a new opportunity. >> all right. we thank you so much for joining us this morning.

6:24 am
toward mission boulevard on 680. get a live look on oakland. there's the haze in the air. things are lighter than we expected at 6:24 in the morning. we have a little bit of a build heading up toward downtown and the toll plaza. the metering lights are not on. we see those turn on at 6:35. the volume is increasing. the headlights and sunlight. we'll check with the chopper on the other side of the bay. they look at 101 out of the peninsula. smooth drive in both directions getting into the city. this will build as folks head out into the city. of course we have a beautiful city in san jose where laura is and by the bay in san francisco. great stuff all over the place. back to you. >> thanks, mike. california's attorney general is stepping into the fight over prop 8. sponsors who want to reinstate
6:25 am
the ban on same-sex marriage. the ruling should be overturned because the judge is in a same-sex relationship. the hearing is scheduled for next month. in san francisco, twice the amount of disabled parking placards than meters in the city. that suggests people are abusing the placards taking the spots from people who need them. at 6:25, a crafty scheme at michaels craft stores. how does that work? >> there are bad guys swiping your bank account information. at least 80 michaels stores were hit. the bad guys are based here. they are withdrawaling people's cash in california. what's amazing is card information was stolen through skimmers hardware device in the stores themselves. nobody caught on until hundreds
6:26 am
of people reported odd withdrawals from their accounts. now, the mystery is, how in the world did criminals install skimmers over top of the credit card machines in 80 stores? michaels is going to replace more than 7,000 machines. did criminals come in and pretend they were repairmen? it's not clear at this point. the law that has lawmakers with radiation warnings is dead. san francisco passed and delayed the law that requires labels showing you the -- >> all right. we are out here live at the winchester mystery house. a lot of spooky things happening this morning.
6:27 am
it's friday the 13th. i'm outside, safe. inside, bob redell. i understand you are with a psychic this morning. what does she have to say? >> we are steps away from the bedroom in which sarah winchester died. up i want to get a sense of what you feel. get your feeling and vibe. if you see or feel anything, let us know. >> plrs winchester is here and loves the fact we are in this room. this is her favorite bedroom in the world. when she was here, she actually wanted to die in this room. it's how much she loved it. the most important part of this room, and i talk to dead people all the time, is that window there, which is next to the bed where she died. this is not the exact bed, but it's the spot where she died. she loved to look out that window and loved to see the view. that was her favorite view. the other thing is, last time i
6:28 am
was here, i took pictures and the picture came with a beautiful orb that was on the back of the bed where she died. that meant to me, it was her spirit and her energy in that bed. trying to show us that she's still here and around. and how much she loves that people are taking care of her home. >> she's a good spirit? she's cool with the media being here and visitors here on a daily basis. >> yes. she wouldn't want you if she was alive. >> that would be called breaking and entering. >> yes. she loves that you are here and taking care of the place. it looks great. she enjoys being here. >> thank you. nice meeting you. i want to walk over here. it's friday the 13th. hey, ted. every friday the 13th at 1300 hours, 1:00 in the afternoon, they pull on this rope here and
6:29 am
ring the bell of the sarah winchester mystery house to commemorate this freaky day. laura. >> i was really glad to hear that she feels that sarah winchester is happy that we are here this morning. that makes us happy as well. a lot more coming up from the myuseriochr es wermyte euschtemystery use in san jose, coming up.
