welcome to our viewers across the nation. today we begin with breaking news. one week after form er governor of california and his wife announced their separation. he announced a child with a woman a decade ago. he says he told his wife about the child after he left the governor's office earlier this year. source tells the la times that he took financial responsibility from the start. >> today we begin with behind bars. that's where dominique strauss-kahn finds himself this morning after being denied bail yesterday. the head of the international monetary fund was sent to new york's riker's island until his next court appearance.

for more we go to tracie potts in washington. good morning. >> reporter: hi, there, lynn. here in washington, there's already discussion about who might be angling for his job, whether it should go to another developing nation and his attorney says point blank, he is innocent. this morning dominique strauss-kahn remains in prison after being denied bail. >> restrained a hotel employee inside his room. he sexually assaulted her and attempted to forcibly rape her. >> reporter: police collected dna from his room, but strauss-kahn's attorney says this case is far from over. >> the battle has just begun. we believe and we'll prove in our judgment that mr. strauss-kahn is innocent of these charges. >> reporter: also unclear, is he protected by diplomatic immunity?

in other words, could he escape prosecution. >> my understanding is that folks are looking in to this. >> reporter: as head of the international monetary fund, strauss-kahn controls $1 trillion and was believed to be a candidate for the french presidency. there's already it talk about whether someone from a developing country might take over. >> it's undecent that some governments already this morning started that debate. >> reporter: the imf board's been briefed on his case. for now, he hasn't been suspended or fired. >> the imf staff and its executive board will continue to monitor developments. >> reporter: strauss-kahn is due back in court on friday. lynn? >> tracie potts for us in washington. thanks. well, residents along the mississippi river's flooded banks are in a slow moving nightmare as they wait for the rising waters to crest. officials are keeping two major spillways open to protect louisiana's major cities, but

the overflow has forced thousands to either evacuate or ride out the disaster. in vicksburg, mississippi, residents are hoping the yazoo back water levee will remain intact until the mighty river crests sometime tomorrow night or thursday morning. meanwhile the u.s. is treading dangerously close to defaulting on its debts. after officially maxing out its federal borrowing limit yesterday, timothy geithner told congress that creative accounting will keep the country afloat for now, but warned lawmakers they need to agree on a solution by august 2nd. republicans refuse to raise the debt limit unless the obama administration first agrees to massive spending cuts. however, according to the congressional budget office, republicans' debt reduction plan only slashes $122 billion from the budget, less than half of the $300 million savings they projected. and now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america.

a case of police brutality has put a former south carolina deputy behind bars. surveillance video recorded last august shows the officer hitting a handcuffed victim 27 times with a steel baton breaking his leg. he's been sentenced to five years in a federal prison. a building collapse rocked a small arkansas town killing a 2-year-old little girl and injuring at least six others. according to? reports, the two-story building housed several businesses and was undergoing renovations at the time of collapse. investigators are trying to determine if construction on one of the ground level stores caused the collapse. and finally, flying the friendly skies over florida netted one airline passenger a pretty memorable photo. the woman was headed to west palm beach when she snapped a picture of the shuttle "endeavour" soaring into space following its launch. she tweeted the photo and it quickly spread giving the world a rare view of "endeavour's" last adventure.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." and in sports, yankees fans hoping to see the bronx bombers dig themselves out of their slump got quite a disappointment last night. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. >> good morning. the yankees have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. recently swept pie the red sox, posada refused to play after being moved to ninth in the lineup, and their struggles continued last night against the rays. they had a four run lead in the sixth. upton capped off a five run inning with a home run. tampa won. the yanks have dropped six

straight. and they won't like this, the red sox trailed 6-0 and rallied against the orioles. gonzalez completed a come back with a walk off double off the green monster. sox win it 8-7. l.a., brewers and dodgers, a shot to left center. looked like his fourth home run of the year, but gomez timed it perfectly, jumped and robbed him of a sure homer. for some reason johnny gomes didn't think he hit one here. against the clubs, hit it clear out of the park, but check out his reaction. stopped at second, looked at the umpire. yeah, johnny, that's gone. no doubt about the score, reds won 7-4. a very forgettable night at the royals. indian had 14 runs in 2 1/3. indians roll 19-1. and finally a rain delay can put
