learn new information about his child and how maria shriver's family is reacting to the news. >> arnold, any comments? >> reporter: former governor arnold schwarzenegger leaving his santa monica office, ignoring reporter questions after his bombshell admission that he fathered a child with the woman who worked in the home he once shared with wife maria shriver. the new york times reports the boy may be as old as 14, which wouldle mean his mother was pregnant about the same time as shriver. the couple's youngest son christopher is 13. tuesday night, shriver made an appearance with oprah, tapinging a farewell tribute for winfrey's final shows. others in oprah's circle offered advice. >> i hope that they clam up about this, they resolve it internally, respect their family unit and respect their kids.

the attack. in a small cell, dominique strauss-kahn has gone from a power suit to a jump suit. he eats in isolation. on suicide watch his only companions are the guards. >> he's living all by himself. a very, very lonely existence. >> reporter: strauss-kahn was staying inside this luxury manhattan hotel. the maid said she was told to clean suite 2806 that was unoccupied. when she walked in there he was, a man she said she didn't recognize. strauss-kahn, naked, coming out of the shower. according to the criminal complaint he sexually assaulted her twice. the attack included oral sexual conduct by forcible compulsion. the maid is now in hiding and

she hired a lawyer. >> she has been caught up in a whirlwind in which she was not only the victim of a crime but now has been isolated from the world as she knew it. >> reporter: as police test for a dna match between the scene and strauss-kahn himself, his lawyer hinted at a possible defense. >> the forensic evidence, we believe, will not be consistent with a forcible encounter. >> reporter: as in consensual. legal experts say prosecutors need more than dna to prove otherwise. >> even if law enforcement matches dna from the victim to the accused it doesn't mean attempted forcible rape. it could mean consent. >> reporter: then there is his past. in 2008 he admitted to an affair with a co-worker, but it is the accusations of this woman that, if true, suggest strauss-kahn may have a history of sexual violence. this french writer claims in 2002, he tried to rape her. she didn't file charges then,

but her lawyer said she plans to now. but that may not matter here in a new york courtroom. >> i don't think his past is necessarily going to come in, unless he testifies about his good character. then he opens the door to bad acts. >> reporter: strauss-kahn is being held without bail. he'll plead not guilty to the charges. sources say the maid will testify later this morning in front of the grand jury. ann? >> jeff, meantime, u.s. treasury secretary timothy geithner is quoted as saying the man is no longer in a position to run the imf. is there a big amount of pressure to push him aside? >> reporter: these were the first and very important comments by tim geithner. he says he is in no position to run the international monetary fund, an organization that controls a trillion dollars, sends money to countries in crisis. how can he run it from jail? no indication he'll resign.

good morning. it's 7:26, i'm marla tellez. well, oakland's controversial gang injunctions will continue. councilmembers narrowly voted in favor of keeping them. it bans 15 members and 40 from the fruitvale neighborhood from associating with each other during the day. there are two controversies, first how much it costs to enforce both in money and community good will and then there's the legal question, are the bans even constitutional? the city council addressed the first question and decided the injunctions are worth the cost.

>> there is nothing to say. it's just so devastatinging. i don't think we have really come to terms with it yet. >> reporter: it all started when the college freshman logged onto craigslist, looking for a new computer. >> he bought most of his stuff online. he was always online looking for the cheapest way to get things. >> reporter: ali, garrett's girlfriend, said last wednesday she drove with him to a san diego neighborhood to meet the so-called sellers. they turned out to be three teenagers who police say robbed ali and garrett, taking their cash and cell phones. >> he felt really bad that he had put us both in a situation like that. >> reporter: ali said she and garrett chased the thieves in their car and that's when the teens opened fire, killing garrett. >> i was trying to get the license plate number. it happened incredibly fast. looking back on it now, you know, just the littlest things

changed it would hav made a big difference. >> reporter: it's not the first time a craigslist transaction has ended in murder. last year a man was shot to death as home invaders posing as buyers after he advertised a diamond ring on the site. in 2007 a 24-year-old woman was killed in minnesota after offering nanny services on craigslist. in this latest case, the suspects were charged as adults with murder and have pled not guilty. garrett's family says they don't blame craigslist, but they want other people to be aware of the danger of meeting with someone you only know online. >> kids don't understand. they all think everybody is just like them. not everybody is that good. >> i don't want someone else to lose their child. >> reporter: as the family copes with their loss, they are comforted by the community and memories of their son. >> love you, garrett!

often buy two airline seats when she flew. >> i fly pretty regularly. at this point i do fit into the 17 inches between the armrests. >> reporter: but she said a ticket agent at southwest airlines saw things differently when she and her mother tried to board a return flight home on easter sunday. >> they wanted to know how much i weighed. i asked what the weight limit was. one gentleman said he wasn't aware of it, but we were too fat to fly without an additional ticket. >> reporter: according to the customer of size policy if a passenger requiring two seats has purchased onlile one ticket he or she will be discreetly taken aside where southwest personnel will deal with the situation in private. she said it didn't happen. >> my mother was upset and said, why aren't we doing this down the hall as opposed to right in front of a gate full of people? >> it was the worst time i have

ever had in my life. i was embarrassed, humiliated. >> reporter: southwest offered to let them board without buying extra tickets if they agreed to sit in the same row with another large woman. >> at that point i took out my cell phone told them, i'm going to record you and put you on my blog. so you may want to go about this differently. the tone changed and they became a little bit apologetic. >> i'm very sorry. >> for what? >> i'm very sorry for the manner in which i traced it. >> reporter: southwest issued a statement apologizing in part for not applying the policy consistently on all legs of the trip. in the end she even got a free flight coupon for another trip. >> i used my voucher to fly to l.a. to work out with richard simmons. turned something horrible into something good. >> she said it wasn't just the

way she was talked to but the fact that 100 people at the gate could hear the entire conversation. ann? >> natalie, thank you so much. kenly joins us now exclusively. good morning. >> good morning. >> did the southwest airlines person say the words "too fat to fly"? >> yes. >> and your mother, her reaction, as you were watching the tape you got emotional. >> yeah. she was very upset. it's not okay to humiliate people in front of a gate full of passengers. they should have used discretion. >> the airline's policy said if a passenger requires two seats he or she will be discreetly taken aside. we have a sense of what happened from natalie. how indiscreet was it in your view? what caused your mom to feel so terrible? >> we walked up. there was already an argument with another passenger in progress and that was happening in front of everyone. she called us in and at that

point we were just drug into a situation already in progress. it was in front of the gate full of people which was almost entirely booked. i mean, the flight was leaving in five minutes. we turned out to be delayed. >> was it loud? could everyone hear around you? >> there were people snickering. there were people who were desperately trying not to make eye contact with me, i think hoping they wouldn't get drug into the situation as well. >> southwest said we spent time at the airport and later on the phone explaining the reasons for the policy in place and offering our heartfelt apologies and monetary compensation for the inconsistent delivery. do you forgive southwest? >> the problem with the statement is they didn't know the policy at the time. >> the people at the counter? >> the people at the counter didn't know. i have to say quickly that i'm not sitting here asserting that i have the right to encroach on

someone else's space. but i do expect to be treated with the same level of respect as every other passenger. there was a hallway. there were many other opportunities to do this differently. >> meantime, you say a lot of people who are overweight do not fly because they don't want to face this kind of circumstance. some people -- i can hear the airlines arguing, look, space matters. we made the seats small because we want to make money on the seats. if you're going to be too big for the seat we'll make you buy two. this is a consistent policy. do you have a problem with the policile? . >> i do. as a free market capitalist, i understand the need, the desire to make money. but what happens is there has to be equal rights to equal access. if these airlines -- if they will change out a few rows of seats, everyone will be happier. people of average size won't be worried that someone is

good morning. it is 7:56 now. new misconduct accusations against san francisco police officers this morning. the city's public defender has released this video. he says it shows two officers st stealing items after a drug arrest. he says 64-year-old jesus jesse reyes was illegally searched during the february 25th incident and that officers stole a laptop and a camera. new police chief greg suhr is responding. he says, quote, all the officers in this case have been taken out of plainclothes. some have been reassigned to administrative duties while the investigation is being conducted. i want to emphasize that these officers have the same rights as any other citizen. they are assumed innocent until

a child born out of wedlock to an employee of the family who was there for 20 years, ten plus with the child. how devastating was the news for her? >> profoundly devastating on so many levels. there are two betrayals here. the act of infidelity and the child that resulted and the deception that went on and on for so many years in her own home. it was just completely heartbreaking. >> how was he able to keep it a secret for so long? there were reports in the past that maybe there was something around the time he was running for governor but never turned into anything. >> it does seem inconceivable he was able to pull it off for this long. obviously the woman involved is complicit in that and had to play along with keeping it quiet. it's shocking, particularly because he went through a campaign and with skeletons almost inevitably coming out of the closet he was able to keep it quiet for so long.

>> there were so many rumors about him. he admitted to womanizing in the past. apologized for it. yet, people quote close friends of maria saying she chose to live in the gray area of not really knowing the truth. though in the past she's denied saying, look, just because i'm a kennedy doesn't mean i was raised to look the other way when my husband is doing something wrong. >> it's possible that maria allowed herself to be okay with some degrees of uncertainty. as to whether or not maybe at some point in the past arnold behaved inappropriately, perhaps boorishly, but i don't think she ever in a million years would have thought this was possible. >> she never would have expected this. meanwhile two of the kids tweeted -- catherine said this is not easy. i appreciate your support. i will always love my family. even maria was with oprah at a

back now at 8:44 with a family 's ter identifying ordeal. jane and eduardo were ambushed by kidnappers. jane escaped but her husband was held captive for seven months enduring beatings, starvation and even being shot. we'll talk to them in a moment. first, their story. >> reporter: for jane and eduardo, life was in a word, perfect. they had three happy children, a happy marriage and lived on a beautiful ranch.

but one morning in june, 2007 after droppinging the kids off at school their lives were turned upside down. >> two men come flying out of the suv in front of us. the first one comes at eduardo with a hammer in one hand and a handgun in the other. another man comes at me and he has a police club and another handgun. >> reporter: eventually jane was left in the car by herself and managed to escape. eduardo was taken in another car and kept in a box not much bigger than himself. for more than seven months as his captors tried to negotiate ransom with jane, eduardo said he was beaten, tortured, starved and shot. when his ordeal was over, eduardo was unrecognizable to his wife and to himself. >> i couldn't believe i looked like pure bones and skin. it was too much. >> reporter: they fled mexico

and established a new life in the united states. jane writes about the ordeal in the book "we have your husband: one woman's story of a kidnapping in mexico." fwrorm to you both. >> good morning. >> reporter: this happened in 2007. does time heal even this wound, eduardo? >> yes, of course. after something so bad happens to you, we are turning it into something very good. we tried to speak out and tried to bring more justice into mexico because there are thousands of people suffering as we speak. the government really isn't doing enough. we need more collaboration from the united states government to help. >> in general, but also in your case in particular because theyle still haven't found the people who kidnapped you. >> that's amazing. >> unbelievable to me. there have been dozens of

families hit by this particular cell of kidnappers alone and they have raised a couple hundred million for their cause. this is a revolutionary army with international links including the middle east which is frightening to me. this is not just about a handful of kidnappings. it's a plague of kidnappings going on for decades and the group has gotten stronger and is starting to establish an international network. >> what's the solution? what do you think is the most important thing that should be done to stop it? >> the united states has to start taking a more serious and active role in situations like this. we are not talking about the cartel wars, organized crime in that way that's on headlines around the world every day. this is a revolutionary army that is significant, that does represent a threat to both mexican national security and other countries including the united states. so i think that our authorities here have to start playing a more active role in the investigative efforts because

mexicans aren't doing anything. >> you wrote about when you saw him afterwards. he was dishevelled, gaunt, draped in loose, dark clothing and looked like he might be a beggar. it was at least five seconds before i recognized him. the realization nearly knocked me to the floor. i thought, oh, my god, it's him. >> i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe looking at him and realizing, oh, my god, this is my husband. just to see what happened to the man that i love at the hands of people. i couldn't imagine how a human could do this to another human. the cruelty was unbelievable. that was the impression my children got, too. my then 12-year-old said, how could anybody be this cruel? >> have you answered the question, eduardo? >> you know, this group is still active and is doing more harm to other people. that's the main thing. we have to stop them. >> have you figured out how a person can be this cruel as they were to you?

>> i think they are sick people. they have an ideology to justify. i don't know. they are trying to play robin hood. >> but they don't help anyone. >> you don't torture people trying to be a good guy. i know you have moved out of mexico because you decided it wasn't safe for your family anymore. >> right. >> some people in this circumstance may want to keep a low profile, may not want to write a beautifully written book from your point of view, giving people a sense of what the experience is like. why do you decide to go public in this way? >> i couldn't help but thinking so many times going through the ordeal, what would have happened? maybe we wouldn't have been put in the situation had someone before me spoken out and said, okay, enough is enough, and drawn the line. that never happened. nobody speaks out in mexico. there is almost a pact of

silence. when it's happening you don't speak out in the media because you want to protect the victim. i understand that. once it is over there is no real investigation and nobody says, wait, something's not right. where is the investigative effort? every time you negotiate and pay you are essentially investing in the criminals doing this. you make them stronger. at this point we are in a situation in mexico where the criminals have the authorities outgunned, outtrained and outfunded. so they are losing the war, they are. in in real terms. it was important to write the book, to tell the story from my perspective in a big way and hopefully to inspire others to do the same. >> i think you did. >> thank you. >> you are a picture of courage. >> in the end we are lucky to be a family again. that's the most important thing. >> also what she's saying is nobody really wants to help in real terms and come out and do something directly to stop the

that was for the family. >> he said over the years so many viewers came up and said, your parents are so much a reflection of our own parents. so true. we all see a little bit of our own family in his family. >> yeah. he said, i was grateful to have my parents take a bow for other parents. my parents weren't news-makers. they were able to say hello. i think that's mike reflecting on how important the rv trips were to him and his family. ♪ happy birthday >> it's a joy. a joy of life is children and the story of life is, as the older people pass on, there is someone to take their place. then i start thinking about, god, i hope they have a good trip and i hope they see the best.

and how maria shriver's family is reacting to the news. >> reporter: former governor arnold schwarzenegger leaving his santa monica office, ignoring reporter questions after his bombshell admission that he fathered a child with the woman who worked in the home he once shared with wife maria shriver. the new york times reports the boy may be as old as 14, which would mean his mother was pregnant about the samtime as shriver. the couple's youngest son christopher is 13. tuesday night, shriver made an appearance with oprah, taping a farewell tribute for winfrey's final shows. shriver made no mention of the scandal surrounding her life. others in oprah's circle offered advice. >> i hope that they clam up about this, they resolve it internally, respect their family unit and respect their kids. >> reporter: earlier in the day tuesday, shriver released this statement.

this is a painful and heartbreaking time. as a mother, my concern is for the children. i ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and i try to rebuild our lives and heal. shriver and schwarzenegger have four children, 17-year-old patrick tweeted, "some days you feel like -- some days you want to quit and just be normal for a bit, yet i love my family till death do us apart." 21-year-old katherine said, this is definitely not easy, but i appreciate your love and support as i begin to heal and move forward in life. i will always love my family. >> in a situation you would expect the children to side with mom. mom has been a good mother while the father has been cheating on the family. >> reporter: in 2003, shriver stood by her husband, defending him from accusations of groping when he ran for governor. of course, that was before

schwarzenegger's shocking admission that he fathered a child with the woman who continued to work in their home for more than a decade. shriver may not have known about his secret life, but some democrats are now calling for an investigation. >> i would like to know if there were any costs to the people of california or if any campaign funds might have been used to perpetuate the cover-up that's gone on lo these many years. >> reporter: politically insiders say schwarzenegger is finished, but commercially experts say he could be still a huge success. >> i'll be back. >> reporter: if arnold wants to make another terminator movie, people will be interested. that will be a hot ticket. >> reporter: meantime, shriver won't comment any further on the scandal. one family's private pain playing out on a very public stage. according to reports, the 20-year employee retired in january and while it's been said

she never lived in the home, it is believed that her child had a presence there. we should point out when winfrey and oprah were on the show together yesterday, it appeared the two joked about telling the truth which got large applause. >> thank you, miguel. ann and brian survived infidelity and ann wrote about it saying "my husband's affair became the best thing that ever happened to me." they are here with dr. allen, relationship therapist. brian, i will start with you. as ann wrote in the book, you had a great marriage before you had an affair. have you been able to figure out why you had the affair? >> yeah, absolutely. i think my affair had nothing to do with my marriage. it had everything to do with me. like many good people i was dealing with a lot of stress in my life. i wasn't really handling it

properly. so when this other woman showed up, she was -- she really became a distraction more than anything until i became more emotionally involved with her. once i became emotionally connected to her, i then began to use my marriage as an excuse for my bad behavior. so i began to realize after a while that i was slowly moving this moral boundary that i had firmly established before. little by little i kept movinging the boundary until i was fully involved with this other woman. >> how did you then tell ann? >> well, i came home one day, you know, feeling kind of guilty and convicted of what i was doing. took me two hours to blurt it out. i just said at some level she needed to know because she was my life. i really didn't want her to find out from somebody else. so i just came home and told her. well, struggled to get it out to

tell her i was having an affair and i was seeing another woman. so that was -- >> very hard to do. ann, for you, how was that on the other end of it? those first few days dealing with the shocking -- >> oh, my gosh. it was awful. when he first toldle me, i went into shock, sat in my chair all night. didn't sleep. didn't move. i didn't sleep for three days. i didn't eat for 25 days. it was just complete chaos that ensued upon our once happy family. >> when did you decide this was a marriage that was worth saving? >> for me, it really wasn't for a long time. i got some good advice from good friends which i would pass on to anyone going through it today. that was, ann, we have seen you and brian together. we know brian loves you. we don't understand what's going on right now, but you have every

"today" contributor gail saltz is mother of three and the host of vh 1's reality series, you're cut off. so interesting. you say bullying is part of human nature. some people say it's a rite of passage. is it the same thing? >> i don't think it needs to be. it's within human nature to want power, control, to try to achieve it by basically stepping

over others and tole feel jealousy and envy and deal with it by trying to criticize and push someone down so you can feel better about yourself. >> is it about harassment? there is nothing simple about it. >> it's more complicated than just harassment. we're talking things like being critical, gossiping, trying to undermine someone else. isolating, shunning. and excluding. these are techniques women use against each other. >> it's the same techniques kids use on the playground. why do women who are victims here feel ashamed about standing up? >> essentially you have a sorority of intimidation here. the women who are victimized are feeling the same insecurities that children feel when they are bullied. they feel alone and helpless sometimes. >> absolutely. what you have to remember is that, a, you are not alone and, b, these are bad moms.

they are bad moms doing these things. don't throw poison on another kid's frosted flakes and call yourself a good mom. >> are they perhaps people who were bullied? >> i wouldn't say necessarily they are bad people. they are doing a bad thing. and probably they are doing it out of crazy insecurities. >> you're perched to talk here. >> it's been modeled for them by their own moms. we are breeding another -- they are missinging what's going on inside them that could be changed and they could be better people. >> of course. but their behavior, in the end, is deplorable. i do not believe you can call yourself a good mom when you are really poisoning somebody else's home. also, it feeds down. these moms do not raise compassionate kids. >> correct. >> the behavior is repeated in the child. >> exactly.

>> i want to transition from the bully to people being bullied and what you should do. people have the same ethics as you. how does that help you? >> get a support system. often times the victims feel alone. by the way, just because another woman is a mom doesn't mean you have comal ti with her. it doesn't mean as a mother you need to play in the same play group as your kids do. find women who will stand up for you and you can stand by. >> i love this one. protect fellow moms. >> it is about standing up for what's right. >> the fact is what's most e if he can -- effective is the bystander effect. if you get other moms to say, we see it happening and it's not okay. that makes the biggest impact on bullying in the community. >> work for a solution. look for a way to clean it up. >> two wrongs don't make a right. you need to step in and take the

moral high ground and teach empathy to your children. you can't be this kind of role modelle. >> you were saying bad behavior trickles down. >> these are monsters in mini vans, they are. and what is inside of that mini van they are teaching to the kids. if you want your kid to play in the play group, understand that's what they are learning. >> thank you both. i will take you in any fight with me. >> let's go, baby. up next, sam the cooking guy fires up your grilling routine. first, these messages. twizzlers. the twist you can't resist. good morning. i'm marla tellez. this morning, doctors in san francisco are expected to give us a better idea of how giants

fan brian stowe is doing. stowe is currently treated at san francisco general hospital and last we heard he was still in a coma. he was transported there earlier this week. police are looking for the men who attacked stowe in march. a $200,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest in this case. officers say they are getting a lot of tips but real leads are few and far between. >> we had a person saying that they were definitely at the dodger game, you know, they looked like the composite even to the point where there was a mole on the person's face. we immediately launched out there. we ended up talking with that individual. confronted him and he was at a dodger game but it was a little league dodger game. >> officers are now looking for a third suspect in the case. a woman in her 20s who witnesses say drove the car that took the two suspects away on the night of that attack.

did a whole article that said more and more women are deciding to take their husband's name. what do you think of that? >> i think it is totally a woman's choice. the thing that i resent is when a guy bullies a woman into taking his last name. for him it's his tradition. a know a lot of guys are like hey, if we are getting marries she should take my name. i don't like that attitude. i know a lot of professional women who are taking their husband's last names. when i met my wife she was mid career. she has a very successful career. and i think women are getting married later and later. >> did it hurt your feelings at all? >> i didn't consider her taking my name. >> what happened to the

hyphenated name thing? >> it is inconvenient. when you get into e-mail addresses. >> and when you get divorced. >> on facebook now you are seeing a lot more hyphenations because people are being recognized for the names they grew up with in high school but they also want to take their husband's names. we might see a trend. >> i decided to change my name. it was hunter before. i felt like i like the tradition and i felt like my husband's mistress. we would be together but we would have different names and it was confusing. >> you felt like a tramp. >> in other cultures, some may seem not as advanced, the women always keep their name because it is disrespectful to their

father to say i'm going to throw that name out the window and pick up that guy's name. >> a lot of cultures are different. i was talking to a japanese american and you do take the name in japan. >> how much of it is generational? >> i think it is generational. a lot of women say in the 20s you do, and 30s and beyond maybe you don't. for a lot of women they think sit a big hassel. there is websites. now mrs.com. >> in my mother's day it would have never occurred to her. >> they fought long and hard for those choices.
