i'm lynn berry. today with begin with tense talks. president obama will sit down with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu today. the topic of peace in the middle east is sure to take on a different tone now that the president has embraced palestinian terms for drawing borders with israel. tracie potts is in washington for us with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: hi there, lynn. they are expected to spend three hours together today. he backed a two-state solution >> the borders of israel and palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps so that secure and recognized borders are

established for both states. >> if he will try too strongly to satisfy obama he will find himself with no government home. so he knows what are his red lines. >> key issues are israel's defense and settlements which israel is expending. >> the dream of a jewish and democratic state cannot be fulfilled. >> so far we have not seen the palestinians ready for it. >> u.s. made commitments in 2004 allowing occupation nearly four decades ago. lynn?

>> tracie potts there for us in washington, thank you. dominique strauss-kahn is set to be released from a new york prison today, but not without strict conditions. thursday, a judge agreed to a bail agreement after the former head of the international monetary fund was indicted by a grand jury. nbc's michelle franzen has the details. >> reporter: bail granted. at a hearing, a judge ordered dominique strauss-kahn be released on $1 million and confined to home detention at a new york city apartment strauss-kahn's wife recently rented. the defense attorney arguing that their client would not fly to france. >> he would be equipped with an electronic monitoring device on his body that would have video cameras as well as an armed monitor at the entrance and exit of the facility. >> reporter: prosecutors tried to argue strauss-kahn was a flight risk and told the court a grand jury formerly indicted the 62-year-old on seven counts, including attempted rape and sex abuse. >> a grand jury has herd

evidence in this case and has voted that there is reasonable cause to support these charges. >> reporter: but after a short recess, the judge ruled and strauss-kahn was set free. the 62-year-old is charged with attempted rape, sex abuse and other violent sex crimes. he's accused of sexually abusing assaulting a maid inside his hotel suite in midtown manhattan last weekend. strauss-kahn will soon be released from riker island, but trading his jumpsuit and close the sized cell for the comforts of home, but still faces an uphill court battle to clear his name. michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. elsewhere, the fallout from arnold schwarzenegger's admitted affair with a former housekeeper continues. he told his agents to put the brakes on all deals in the works for his hollywood come back. days after admitting he fathered a child with a staffer, he announced through his attorney all projects, including "cry macho" and the "terminator" franchise are now on hold.

this as wife maria shriver takes what could be the first step towards ending their marriage. "people" magazine says she's hired top divorce attorney laura wasser. but a source says she's still unsure if she wants to end the 25-year union. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. >> this is tough to watch. in arizona a woman and a child were het by an suv in a crosswalk. they appeared to be out of the driver's crew and popped out as the light turned green. the two suffered minor injuries and the driver was cleared of wrong doing because the mother tried to cross too late. a bizarre chain of events was captured on a south carolina police dash cam. during a traffic stop, an officer scuffled with a suspect who managed to jump into the police cruiser and then take

good morning, and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. the fbi wants the dna of the so-called unabomber ted kaczynski for its investigation into the still unsolved tylenol

killings. in 1982, seven people died after taking pills from tylenol bottles laced with cyanide. a lawyer for the unibomber who is serving a life sentence for his attacks that killed three, said the dna is wanted to rule him out as a suspect. in peshawar, a pakistani bystander died while several americans were hurt. the pakistani taliban has claimed responsibility. senate republicans have handed president obama his first senate defeat of a judicial nominee. the senate was eight votes short of the 60 needed to end debate and give goodwin liu, a university of california law professor who is viewed as a liberal, an up or down vote on his nomination. and who knew the centers for disease control has a sense of humor? in a blog post, the cdc gives ways to prepare for a zombie apocalypse. the post got so much attention, it actually crashed the cdc

website. they say it was just a satyrical way to get attention for the real issue of preparing for hurricane season. mission accomplished there. >> and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,605 after gaining 45 points yesterday. the s&p inched up two points. the nasdaq added eight. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei shed 13 points, but in hong kong, the hang seng was up 36. investors hope linkedin's impressive wall street debut is a preview of what's in store for other social networks planning to go public this year. shares of the professional network jumped 109%, rising from an initial price of $45 to close just over $94. that success, however, didn't do much for the mainstream tech sector as goldman sachs issued a sell recommendation on intel and advised caution for the entire semiconductor sector.

meanwhile, concerns about the economy weighed on the dow. fresh data showed a slump in sales of previously owned homes. weak regional manufacturing and a surprisingly slow forecast for future economic activity. oil prices fell after the international oil agency countered opec's stance that oil supplies are just fine, saying there is a, quote, urgent need to ramp up production to prevent further damage to the global economy. after the bell, late, barnes & noble shares soared after liberty media's $1 billion buyout offer. in a pr deal critics call the definition of selling out, starbucks and lady gaga are teaming up to cash in on copies of the pop star's new album. and you can stop worrying. mcdonald's execs assured shareholders yesterday despite calls from children's health advocates to retire ronald mcdonald, the red-haired mascot is here to stay.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, in last night's nba western conference final, the underdog oklahoma city thunder did something the defending lakers cooperate, beat the dallas mavericks in a playoff game. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. game one of the western conference finals was a dirk nowitzki show. game two belonged to the thunder bench. dallas, kevin durant with the dunk of the series in the first quarter, elevated to the rim for the one-happened jam. the bucket, the foul and the thunder up two in the half. in the third, james harden leading the way. he had 23 points. the reserves played so well that russell westbrook didn't play the bench accounted for 50 points in all. thunder ties the series with the win.

nhl series, boston scored early and late. david krejci all along. bruins led, 1-0, a minute into the game. to the third, the slap shot that had eyes, drew a couple of players. tim thomas with 31 saves. bruins shut out the lightning 2-0. they lead the series, 2 games to one. baseball, great finish between the tigers and the red sox. red sox took the lead in the ninth. carl crawford, walk-off rbi single. good day to be a boston fan. the red sox won it, 4-3. they say things happen in threes. for the rockies' jason giambi, those three things are home runs. had a hand in all the rockies runs and speaking of threes, giambi is the third player this season to hit a hat trick of homers. rockies roll, 7-1. finally, seattle is not known for the sun, but don't tell that to the angels' torre hunter.
