cockpit of american airlines flight. then he allegedly tried to open the locked doors before he was subdued. they asked the judge to release him to the care of his relatives in vallejo because he appears to suffer from mental health problems. for only the third time since the arrest, two american hikers were able to speak to their families. shane bauer and josh fatel were on a hunger strike after they were not allowed to get more mail. two men along with sarah were arrested for hiking along the iraq-iran border in 2009. all three have been charged with being spies, which they have denied. the top financial adviser for 90% of the state's school district has good news for change. sacramento based school services

expects flat funding for schools next year. the amount of money would be the same level right now. school services say the extra money would be able to bring back teachers and administrative positions. they want to wait on hiring until they balance the budget. they have laid down the ground work to close the budget deficit. they are short $5 billion. state lawmakers try to deal with a $10 billion deficit. they are trying to give china the ability to tax. the senate bill would allow cities, counties and school districts to raise taxes on income, vehicles and sales. the controversial measure cleared one committee and could be heard on the senate floor as early as next week. they say it is one way to generate funds to save education and public safety. larry says it's no slam dunk.

developments. the baby may have been found after midnight. i can tell you, i have several calls into the sheriff's department. exact circumstances are still unknown. we can tell you there was an extensive search for the 4-month-old. her mother reported her missing yesterday from her bassinet. friends and family believe someone may have come into the home and took her from her parents room where she was sleeping. what happened is still a mystery. >> i think it's very cruel, disgusting, sick. breaks my heart knowing that someone would do that. >> we don't have indication there was a family dispute or abduction. the thing that is suspicious is the child can't go away on her own.

person they are looking for and the get away driver in all of this. when the announcement was made, the chief was getting choked up talking about the 6,000 hours of police work put into this to find the first person. it's still an open case. as soon as we know anything else, we will pass it along to you. that's the latest from los angeles. back to you. >> thank you, john. marla tellez is live in san francisco this morning with local reaction to the arrest. good morning. >> good morning, laura. it's been one week today that bryan stow has been here at sf general hospital. the move back to the bay area bringing him closer to his family. stow is from santa cruz. today, his family planning to hold a press conference for the media to give their reaction to the arrest in his case.

his sister went on camera pleading for those responsible to turn themselves in. the fund-raiser put on by pizza my heart was early april. they gave 30% of purchases to the stow family, which totalled about 20 grand. the san francisco giants have donated money. individual players have given money. really, this is a story that hits home for so many. when news of the arrest hit at&t park from the bleachers to the dug out, the reactions were similar. giants fans expressing their relief. giants manager calling the arrest great news. rewards reached around $200,000. this month, new billboards went up in l.a. advertising this. l.a.p.d. hoping to make two more arrests in the case. in the meantime, the 42-year-old father of two remains in a coma here at sf general and his family planning to hold the

steady now. >> yes. it's a pretty shot out there, too. 5:23 now. clean up continues as the reserve fleet in benicia. two more rusting ships at the fleet will be heading to the scrap hard this morning. the agency in charge of disposing the ships say it is more than four months ahead of stead yule in removing 20 ships by late september. the vessels will be cleaned and dried off in san francisco, then towed to texas for recycling. san francisco could face a legal battle for businesses trying to set up shop. petco is threatening to sue the city over a measure that prevents it from operating in richmond. it is illegal and the measure exceeds the power. it was meant to protect the half dozen smaller pet supply stores

news of the arrest. marla tellez is live in san francisco with that side of the story for us. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning, laura. everyone is reacting to the case expressing their sense of relief. stow's family is expected to give their reaction at 11:00 at sf general hospital where we are this morning. also, where bryan stow remains. it was one week ago today that stow left l.a. where he's been hospitalized since the march 31 attack. he arrived in san francisco last monday. the 42-year-old father of two is still in a coma. the news of the arrest has fans and the giants organization reacting this morning. the giants releasing a statement saying in part, quote, we commend the los angeles police department for their hard work and we are confident they will continue to dedicate themselves

they include stab wounds. it took place in the dining hall. a fight broke out involving nearly 200 inmates. guards controlled it by using nonlethal bullets and pepper spray. the cause is still being investigated. livermore police say an apartment explosion may be connected to illegal drugs. three people in their 20s and 30s were hurt. they are all in critical condition. they were in the living room of the apartment unit when the explosion started. police say they found drug activity. it caused $350,000 in damage to the building. closing arguments are expected to end today in the trial of two men accused of killing oakland journalist chauncey bailey. two men are charged with three

smell natural gas in the air this morning. pg&e is moving the pipeline testing to south san francisco and san bruno areas. crews are going to vent natural gas from the section of the pipe they will inspect then pressure test it. they say the natural gas is not harmful. service to customers will not be affected. the testing will be from 10:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. governor jerry brown hand picked a new supervisor to sit on the board. kathrin sears. she will represent the third district. she's a skilled litigator and was a partner and associate of two law firms. she replaces charles mclaughlin who died in march of an apparent heart attack.

the rapture did not arrive as promised. the radio preacher says he's flabbergasted nothing happened. he predicted it would bring a firy end to the world. he told the san francisco chronicle he's looking for answers. he'll be back at work today. this morning, newly released video of a deadly tornado that flattened missouri is really bad. it was about a half mile wide. >> oh, gosh. that is a monster tornado. back up. >> quite frightening. you can see one side of the storm spiraling. debris flies in the air. this is in joplin, missouri. it was a bulls eye of the twister on monday. storm chasers were shocked by what they saw.

>> a team from the weather channel witnessed it firsthand while many people living in the area barely made it out. >> i'm not sure i have ever witnessed anything like this before in my life. it shows the power of tornado. >> glass flying everywhere. we barely got out of there. >> it hit the hospital. it hurled cars across neighborhoods and ripped the roof off the hospital. they had to evacuate. two dozen people are confirmed dead from the storm. boy, our hearts go out to those people there. i feel bad. you can't complain about our winds here. >> nothing in comparison. it is breezy out there. enough to knock you around if you drive a high-profile vehicle out there. we are going to see windy conditions. the winds will take a little bit of a break then pick up once again this evening. we have a center of low pressure. the core is going to cross right

that's the reason we are here. we are standing in front of the youth soccer park. i was talking about this earlier. my kids play soccer, i play soccer. a lot of people have kids that play soccer, yet you don't see the crowds at professional soccer games like football and baseball. what do you say to people who haven't been to one? >> i say get out. we have a lot of fun at the games. tons of energy and fans. we were named soccer usa by a newspaper. we have the most adults into it and youth into it. it only makes sense that our mls games would be taken up. >> do you know why we are soccer city usa compared to the east coast? >> they took into account how many adults and youth participate in the game. the attendance is high for the
