it went from $63 million back in 2000 to $186 million this year. it's projected to reach a quarter of a billion dollars in 2012. if your job takes you to san francisco and you walk to work there, you're going to want to hear this. a new study out on pedestrian safety could make you think twice the next time you cross a street. today in the bay' christie smith is live in san francisco with the findings in that report. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. you know, the study shows that san francisco is off the chart when you compare it with other large cities. just overnight a 22-year-old man was hit and killed walking over near lombard street, which underscores what this study found, that san francisco can be a very dangerous place to walk. in fact most metropolitan areas, walkers account for about 12% of traffic deaths. in san francisco, that number is 52%. this is by a group called transportation for america. they found a couple of reasons behind this. the city is dense, it's
6:06 am
accessible and a lot of people like to walk here. we spoke with one woman this morning on her way to work and she didn't see it that way. >> yeah, i mean it's better down on the peninsula in los altos where i work. they stop more. so yeah. >> but it feels safe to you in the city? >> it's very safe. >> reporter: another factor the study found could be that efforts to transform busy thoroughfares into slow-moving streets could make it safer for cars but not necessarily people who work. mayor ed lee has proposed millions of dollars in upgrades to roads and street scapes and the study found that is certainly a good step toward fixing the problem, but the report found that overall if you include other parts of the bay area, walking here is relatively safe. even though san francisco's numbers are the way they are, they're not the worst. in fact the worst is tampa bay, florida. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." it's 6:06 right now.
6:07 am
another round of storms in the midwest killed 13 people overnight. the weather channel's mike seidel is in piedmont, oklahoma, with more. >> reporter: it was another deadly day yesterday and last night another tornado outbreak. the preliminary counting is 36 twisters and at least nine people have been killed by these tornados. we're in piedmont northwest of oklahoma city where the tragedy unfolded live on tv yesterday. not only here locally but on the weather channel. we can show you some of the damage this morning at first light. here's one of the brick homes. you can see it's been hit pretty hard. the car port there, the roof covering up the suv, but you can see piles of bricks here. look down the street here, now all these homes brick. so we're thinking this is going to be at least ef-3 if not ef-4 damage. basically nothing is standing. we've got a few trees that have been debarked, cars flipped over, cars just in piles of rubble. so this is going to be at least ef-3 or ef-4 damage winds, easily over 150 miles an hour.
6:08 am
no more severe weather here but the cleanup gets under way this morning. the search and rescue continues at falcon lake where a mom and three kids huddled in the bathtub as this tornado roared on through. the mom and two of the kids survived. one of the children is still missing. it's a 3-year-old. they'll be out looking for that young child again this morning. severe weather again today farther east. skies will be sunny and drier here in this part of the plains. back to you. >> all right, they certainly need that break. once again, sadly the number has been updated to 13 lives lost from yesterday's storm. really having a rough go at it there. we want to check in with christina. she's got a look at the forecast. they need that break. >> yeah, they certainly, certainly do. 13 lives lost. 36 twisters touched down over the past three days, so very, very severe. when we see this type of setup, it's usually this time of year. we are in the height of tornado season and then hurricane season
6:09 am
starts on june 1st. in our neck of the woods, this is when we get kind of a break. our spring, our summertime, tranquil weather around here. we've got this late spring storm that's pushing in right now and we're still on the warm side of it. you can see a little subtropical moisture tap coming in. but we've got cold air behind it. as the system collides with a big ridge of high pressure, you see this area of clearing, it's fizzling out and falling apart. not able to maintain that organization. nonetheless, we're noticing a little moderate rain pushing ashore now so watch out for that this morning. santa rosa getting a little wet right now so that means where the rubber meets the road, it's going to be hard to gain traction, mike. good morning to you. >> yeah. well, looking at those clouds, which is a big concern for that north bay through santa rosa. closer to the city we show an easy drive right now. livermore, not getting touched just yet by the rain. we're seeing the slowdown because of that volume of traffic out of the altamont pass
6:10 am
coming westbound on 580 through livermore. you're also seeing a slowdown. look off to the left side of your screen, slow approaching the dublin interchange. once you get through castro valley, an easy drive. 880 to the san mateo bridge not a problem right here. we'll show you a view from our chopper heading over towards the bay bridge and we'll show you the skies. low clouds hanging around the area. to the right of your screen you're seeing the north bay, the cloud cover and the rain coming up from that area. across the bay bridge there's a smooth drive and the travel times approaching that are just fine. look at that, grown. speeds indicated close to the limit for interstate 80, as well as 580 and 880 coming through oakland. we'll look at the south bay where there's a smooth drive also. but 31 over on the right, the southbound commute in the northbound direction and end with a look at the san mateo bridge. it's not quite as bad, there's some haze on the lens but still we see the volume of traffic and there may be issues with clouds as well. >> everyone waking up and getting out.

kind of cool to see behind the scenes. >> reporter: absolutely. as you were mentioning, "kung fu panda 2" opens tomorrow in theaters nationwide just in time for memorial day weekend. many talented artists here in the bay area worked on this film here at the pdi dreamworks studio. as you can see we're entering one of their screening rooms. as you're about to see, putting together a massive project like this is very tedious, extremely rigorous and requires a very stern attention to detail. >> kung fu staring contest. go! >> reporter: you better not blink or you could end up missing one of melanie's moments on the silver screen. >> this one is 48 frames. it probably took me about a week to do it. >> reporter: that's just two seconds of screen time. "kung fu panda 2" is 95 minutes long with over 136,000 frames of animati animation, which explains why this film took years to make and
6:15 am
roughly 500 people, including melanie, one of the animators. >> why does it take a week to do 40 frames? >> because you have to individually pose everything. you spend your whole day focusing on itty-bitty motions that you play over and over and over again. it's all about making it the most entertaining you can within 48 frames. as soon as i'm done and my director says, oh, this is great, then the shot will get passed on. >> reporter: melanie's shots eventually ended up like all the other shots in the film in front of a completion artist like erin. >> we polish. after it goes through all the departments, we make sure that everything that's supposed to look that way looks that way. >> reporter: so this is how i'll see it in the theater. >> right. >> reporter: and i don't think there's anything wrong with this. but there is. look closely. the bricks appear to be fluttering. >> it goes across the grout there. >> reporter: oh, yeah. by making a few adjustments.
6:16 am
>> i put one frame back on the wall. >> reporter: erin is able to smooth out the motion of that wall. then when you watch it, there shouldn't be any movement. >> reporter: so you've got thousands and thousands of frames. your job is to look through each individual frame. >> and make sure that we don't have unsightly artifacts. a lot of the problem that say we fix are a hundred pixels big. >> reporter: are you a neat freak at home? >> yeah. >> it is time for the next phase. >> we put out a nice product and want to make sure that everything looks nice. >> that was my fist. >> we need to get to that tower. >> reporter: laura, i'm a little early to be in the theater. still about 24 hours before "kung fu panda 2" opens because it does not open until tomorrow, in time for the memorial day weekend. coming up in a little bit, we'll be speaking with the head of the pdi dreamworks studio located right here in redwood city. >> very cool. it's amazing to see just all the

the state economy, so that could mean great news. usually fantastic weather across the state of california. we want to check today, a little gloomy, a little cold out there. >> yeah, it certainly is. good morning to you, laura. is that why we pay those high gas prices, for the weather here? i think so. good morning to you. we have to deal with a little weather on your drive this morning. if you do have to stop and get gas and you're waking up in santa rosa, grab that umbrella. the front has arrived in the north bay. there's pretty steady fran cloverdale down to santa rosa. but hey you're only expecting the steady rain for a couple of hours as this front is really racing off past the bay area. it's going to be out of here before we hit noon time. this is what we're looking at right now. a little bit more development of these spotty cells just to the north of the peninsula. san francisco, get ready for your first round of rain in the next 15 minutes. that means slick conditions and a slower than normal drive. probably want to give yourself
6:19 am
plenty of time to reach your destination this morning. let's take you through your hour-by-hour forecast. high pressure is still in control. you can see that area of clearing over southern california. that is what's going to tear apart that front. but the cold air will push in and keep our temperatures down today. we'll only break into the upper 50s and you're only in the low 50s in san francisco. 51 degrees in san francisco, headed towards 58 degrees. 55 by noon, though. that's when the clouds will really start to break apart. mild conditions. we're looking pretty good at 4:p.m., 59 degrees, mostly clear. if you're headed out to the big game tonight, it should be cool. bring a jacket with you. it will be much colder than the past couple of nights. 66 for today in santa rosa, 65 in san jose and 68 degrees in gilroy. so as we head through the next few days, we are going to see a little bit of improvement. really a lot of improvement towards memorial day. but here's your game time forecast. san francisco giants take on the marlins.

wasting time or working. in fact their own boss sometimes has trouble figuring it out. >> oh, that's a great question. you know, we combine play and work are very fuzzy here. >> reporter: it's never quite clear if you're playing or working, which is also sort of a dream job. it's a little bit of everything. now, when you get close to the ship date, laura, i will say that it's a lot of work and a lot of long hours. a little bit of trivia for you, though. you've got 8,000 people all over the world with ea. 27 of their titles last year sold more than a million. four of them -- madden and four others sold more than four million so you're talking blockbuster hits here. >> no kidding. when they do work, it certain low pays off. thank you very much, scott. dog walkers are dealing with the business equivalent of a choke collar. that story coming up next. and a live look from our chopper up in the north bay. we've got some big slowing coming into the city approaching that beautiful golden gate bridge. i'll explain what's going on and
6:25 am
all right. it's 6:25 right now. we have some slowing in san rafael that i want to talk about first. we'll take you right out to the chopper shot. we just missed all the activity second ago. we saw a caltrans crew picking up cones there. there you go, that car at the bottom of the screen was stalled in the roadway. these guys jumped off of their
6:26 am
trucks, stopped picking up the cones, pushed the car out of the way. now they're getting back onto their truck and will continue to clear the roadway of these cones and this sign. that's been causing all the slowdown so double duty by those folks at caltrans, another reason to appreciate all the work that they do. they just saved much of that morning commute from the north bay. we'll take you back to the maps and show you the slowdown there for that 11 miles per hour which should improve over the next 20 minutes and also the 13 miles an hour coming off the skyway. we had a lot of friends calling in saying, yeah, that's what's causing part of that problem. the maze looks all right. i'll show you the toll plaza in just a minute but right now i want to show you antioch, the slowdown for highway 4 and we'll take you back to the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights just turned on and there's the backup quickly forming as folks head over there from the maze. >> 6:26 right now. san francisco lawmakers thinking about putting a leash on professional dog walkers.
6:27 am
under a proposal, canine caregivers would undergo training as well as limiting the number of dogs they can walk and pay a registration fee. many dog walkers say the annual fee is not a problem, but the proposed limits could cost $20 an hour per dog. federal park managers recently proposed similar measures on government-run but would limit dog walkers to handle six at a time. we've got a lot more coming up, including our travels around the bay. this morning we're waking up in redwood city. stick around.

6:30 am
name a few. good morning, i'm laura garcia-cannon. 6:30 right now. we're going to have a lot more from redwood city coming up in just a bit. first i want to get a look at the forecast with christina loren. is it going to be soggy today? >> it's soggy out there right now, but the good news, laura, is that we are not going to see this rain all day long. we do have quite a bit of activity, though, especially in the north bay. they traditionally see the most rain as our systems drop in from the north. but the system right here, this front will get sheared apart before the day is done. i'll let you know when the sun is expected to come back and shine over the entire bay area coming up. but showers on the roadways, bad combination when it comes to traffic. >> we don't want the showers, especially in the north bay whery already have a traffic incident. let's look at the chopper. there's a slowdown on 101 coming down towards the tunnel. construction just cleared and we had a disabled vehicle reported by chp but i showed you it getting cleared not by the freeway service patrol but the

caltrans crew doing double duty there. there are clouds drifting through the shot as rain starts to come through the north bay. the bay bridge with a backup at the toll plaza as well. the toll plaza shot shows you quickly filling in, all lanes filling in back towards 880. back to you. how safe are you when you're walking down the street in san francisco? this morning we have a new report on pedestrian safety in the city. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san francisco with the findings of that report. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. you know, when you compare san francisco to other big cities, the numbers here are really troubling. just overnight a 22-year-old man was hit and killed walking over near lombard street which underscores what this study found, that walking around the city can be a rather dangerous and even fatal experience. now, the study was done boy a group called transportation for america. they found a couple of things. first, that in most cities walkers make up about 12% of all traffic deaths. in san francisco, the number is
6:32 am
close tore 52%. a couple of reasons behind this. one is that a lot of people walk here. it's dense, it's accessible. we just spoke with one man who was walking this morning and he says drivers in the city, oftentimes they're just too much. >> they could be a little radical. you know, it can be a little tough with the drivers here. you know, it gets so congested. seems like the city is getting crowdeder. it's a little difficult at times. i drive a bus. >> reporter: the study also found a couple of other reasons could be that efforts to make thoroughfares slower often work out better for drivers than they do for pedestrians. they support mayor ed lee's proposed bond measure to upgrade roads and street scapes. they think that could help. the study also found that overall when you take other parts of the bay area, including the east bay, it is pretty safe to walk in the bay area. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay."

6:38 am
active than what we're seeing right now. the bulk of the moisture is coming through as we speak. but you see suspect over southern california and this front is trying to move into southern california but this big ridge of high pressure is just breaking it apart. this is what we're expecting in terms of our hour-by-hour forecast for today. we'll see pretty steady rain mostly north of the golden gate bridge for the next few hours. then it will rapidly clear out of here but the cold air arrives and that's going to keep our temperatures nice and cool today. 51 degrees in san francisco now, only 59 is the high. but we'll see the sunshine and 70s back tomorrow, mike, so that's good news. >> we'll always look on the brighter side of the forecast. look at the eastbound side of 580, that's a nice flow of traffic. westbound, we do have the slowing and that means you have a 19-minute drive, averaging just over 40 miles per hour through much of livermore so consider that whole stretch into the 40s there as you're heading towards the dublin interchange. now, once you get towards the maze and the approach to the bay

today we're in redwood city. scott mcgrew is live at the home of ea sports. scott, ea doing a lot more than just sports. >> reporter: oh, doing a lot more than just sports. in fact a lot of action games. steve is the executive producer of something called dead space 2. thanks for being with us early this morning. i noticed a bunch of employees are coming through. it's 6:40 and it's an early start for video gamers, i would have to think. >> yeah, yeah, it's pretty early for folks to be coming in but i think people are excited we're doing this in the lobby. >> reporter: it is great fun. so dead space 2 and an executive producer. what does an executive producer do? >> well, i get to actually represent the team that makes the game. one of my main goals or job descriptions really is to create the vision for the project. drive the team to what we're trying to accomplish and support them and make sure that everybody that's creating the game has everything they need to
6:44 am
create something fun for our players. >> reporter: in those last few days before you printed it, before it went gold, that's chaos at a video game company, isn't it? >> it absolutely is. we're going through the software making sure we get all the bugs out and making sure it's the highest quality possible. >> reporter: now, do you play it at home? >> absolutely. play it at least probably 30 times before it game out all the way through. >> reporter: but what i mean is, is this something you relax with or is it hard to relax with your own game? >> well, when i'm looking at the software i'm working on, it's work. >> reporter: tell us what your favorite game that isn't dead space 2. >> i'm a big fan of madden. actually it's a story when i was a bit younger, i would drive up to foster city to get my copy of madden every year so it was always a dream to work at ea. >> reporter: steve is an executive producer at ea so a little behind the scenes for you this morning. >> that's really cool.
6:45 am
it's interesting when they take their work home it's a little different. >> reporter: we can't watch a newscast without mentally figuring everything out. >> i think watching a newscast with news people drives other people crazy, yeah. >> reporter: yes, absolutely. >> thank you very much. thanks why it helps to be married to a newscaster, sometimes. it's 6:45 right now. hey, part of the 408 is now the 669. the santa clara board of supervisors has voted to implement the new area code using the so-called overlay method. that means people signing up for new service will get that 669 area code. all existing numbers will stay the same. so if you're 408, you're 408. but everyone will have to dial ten-digit numbers to make local calls in silicon valley. well, the new number will be added next year so we can put off the confusion over that for a little bit. legal troubles for two bay area gambling halls are coming to an end. the oaks club and artichoke joe's casino in san bruno

finally reached a settlement with state regulators in their criminal racketeering investigation. they each paid $575,000 in fines and investigation costs, and agreed to supervise their card rooms better. agents raided the gambling halls back in march and arrested 15 people suspected of using their ties to the clubs to do loan sharking and drug dealing. 6:46 right now. i want to check the forecast. a cool start to the day, kind of dreary for some, soggy. >> we'll see two sides to this day. good morning to you, laura. we'll see a really nice second half of the day. we are seeing the bulk of the moisture come through right now. if you're waking up in santa rosa, give yourself plenty of time. we're starting to notice a little spotty activity developing from san francisco up through sacramento. the bulk of the moisture will reach your neck of the woods in the next 20, 30 minutes. the whole thing clears out of here before noon today. you can see san francisco getting pretty steady rain so watch out for slick conditions in that area.
6:47 am
this is what's happening, this front isn't going to make its way all the way through the bay area. this is a cold front, it's a late spring storm. as you can see right here, high pressure is drying it out so this moisture is colliding with this big dry ridge of high pressure. as it does so, it's just evaporating so we're not going to see a lot of this moisture even make its way into the south bay or the east bay, but the cold air will. this is what we're looking at as it comes to your hour by hour forecast. at 11:00 a.m., that's all that's left between redwood city and san francisco. by noon we are clear but it will still be mostly cloudy. by 4:00 p.m. we'll see a mix of sun an clouds, 60 in oakland, 67 in fremont and 67 degrees in los gatos. don't worry, the 70s are back as of tomorrow. but we do have a game in this city tonight. if you're headed out there, weather will likely be a factor. chilly conditions, only 56 degrees. that's with a little bit of daylight still at 7:17. 71 by thursday.
6:48 am
pretty nice-looking three-day weekend, laura. >> yeah, looks good. >> we're always looking at the weekend, aren't we? >> on monday around here, huh. it is actually a big weekend for another company based out of redwood city. dreamworks is releasing its big summer movie "kung fu panda 2." oh, yes, they have got a few of these, don't they, bob? >> reporter: they do. your looking at the oscar for "shrek" a very popular film that came out in 2001 that has been a successful franchise. we're here at pdi dreamworks in redwood city. this is the head of the studio. >> good morning, welcome. >> reporter: this is a big opening weekend for you and a big opening weekend for everyone, it's memorial day weekend. >> yes. >> reporter: as head of the studio, what's running through your mind in the hours before the opening? >> well, obviously we know we've got a great movie. it's running 91 on rotten tomatoes. it's a fantastic entertainment. but we're always a little afraid, you know, as you head
6:49 am
into an opening weekend what the audience is going to think. so we're keeping our fingers crossed. >> reporter: where do you get your first inkling, the first numbers? >> jeffrey will get a call on friday night. >> reporter: are you on text with him? >> yes, yes. then we're pinging back and forth. we have a really good idea by sunday morning. >> reporter: and then at this point it's party time perhaps or do you have to go back to work monday. >> oh, we'll party on monday. we'll definitely party on monday. >> reporter: but you have to get back to work and figure out what's coming down the pipeline. i'm curious, how far out to you plan for what the next projects are going to be? i know "madagascar" is coming out. >> we have "puss and boots" and "madagascar" in june. it's kind of like horses in a race. you're betting on people and
6:50 am
they're running. >> reporter: we were talking about this earlier, the technology is so advanced that it almost seems limitless, at least to me the audience goer. >> yeah. >> reporter: so if the imagination, the possibilities are endless, how do you narrow it down to an idea that you think is going to work? >> you know, they say there's only a few distinguigood storie. you're doing the resonance on those few good stories and it's really what captures the imagination. we were talking previously about you need to capture the imagination of a little kid, but you need to capture the imagination of the kids in all of us. so if it hits our heart strings, it's going to hit the larger audience. >> reporter: and that's got to be a challenge to play to the level of a child and to an adult like myself, like a father who brings his children to the movie because they are, after all, the ones who have the wallet. >> right. but, as you know, you're laughing out loud in these movies also. >> reporter: absolutely.
6:51 am
>> so we've hit it on multiple levels. but it's not like you start to build a project based on just how a kid feels. i kind of liken it to boogie woogie music. that's how you play to all audiences. >> reporter: thank you very much. west of luck to you. i hope your friday night is wonderful. "kung fu panda" opening tomorrow, thursday, in time for the memorial day weekend. stick around, laura, we've got our may map out here and we'll try to throw something at it, do something to it to figure out where we're going tomorrow. >> all right, we'll look forward to that. it is interesting to see there could already be a "kung fu panda 3" in the works since they plan so far out. >> we are going to find out where we're headed tomorrow, ats buckingham bama has some o palace.

awkward. bloody american. awkward. well, didn't the country start because we didn't want to follow the rules, after all? but i think when in rome, right? well, there are now more than half a million apps in the apple app store. scott mcgrew live out in redwood city. how many of those apps do you have, my friend? >> reporter: i have at least a dozen. i have flip book is my favorite, hulu is a good one. as long as i'm at ea, i might as well be playing madden as well. apple says it now has a half a million apps on the app store. the "wall street journal" totaled it up and said, you know what, if you were to buy one of each, it would turn out to be about $800,000 you'd have to spend on itunes. we'll be watching wall street. yesterday this is video of a russian company opening the nasdaq with their ipo. a company called yandex which
