we're going to check your forecast. >> pretty pictures there, but you still need a jacket this morning. not like what i'm trying to do here on the set, i forgot my suit coat at home. 40s and 50s outside. you can see 48 in napa and santa rosa. you can see the clouds there in san francisco. you have plans for the unofficial start of summer. but take the snow cables and chains to the sierra. even for the bay area, we have a slight chance for an isolated shower. so it is going to be cool outside today, upper 60s around san jose and only around 59 around san francisco. so we'll talk more about this very strange weather which includes isolated showers for the bay area, and sierra snow, maybe thunder for the afternoon. wild weather for this weekend. i'll have a full look at that forecast in just a new minutes. >> not what people expect on memorial day. >> or any time in may, really. we begin this morning with something you may have felt

overnight, a small earthquake shook up the south bay early this morning. the magnitude 3.3 quake hit about 3:30 this morning. it centered nine miles north of morgan hill and 15 miles southeast of san jose. this is according to a preliminary report in the usgs. is good news, no reports of any damage or injuries. this morning oakland police are still looking for the gunman of a drive by shooting that injured six people. it happened on athens avenue near san pablo avenue. the shooter was on a motorcycle when he opened fire, three people were hit. they were taken to nearby hospitals but they are expected to survive. law enforcement will be out in force this memorial day weekend. dui checkpoints are planned all around the bay area. according to california watch, a research group at uc berkele

berkeley--those checkpoints have turned into something else. checkpoints that now target illegal immigrants who are driving without a license. >> i thought it was created for dui. that's not the case. they've been focused on the families who are undocumented. >> the state assembly just passed legislation on when officers can impound an unlicensed driver's car. a licensed driver can pick it up. and now another live look at the bay bridge right now, ahead of some construction work this holiday weekend. some east bound lanes will be closed tonight and tomorrow, so keep this in mind as you make your way from san francisco to oakland this holiday weekend. the shutdown will start from 8:00 tonight and last until 5:00 tomorrow morning on both sunday and monday. that's so crews can create a detour for drivers headed from san francisco into oakland on

the lower deck. that detour will last for two years and it is expected to allow crews to finish the new bridge ahead of schedule. westbound lanes will not be affected. meantime, some b.a.r.t riders can expect 20 to 40 minute delays this weekend because half of the transbay tube is shut down so crews can do some maintenance work. shutdowns until 7:30 this morning and then tomorrow and monday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 this afternoon. the work began last night after the last train and will start up again after the last train tonight. now on that frightening rape case in oakland. it happened yesterday morning, but as sheryl herd explains, a string of drugstore robberies could also be linked to a suspect who tried to outrun oakland police. >> he hit the pole right here, and then the car ended up

stopping right there. and he got out, ran, ran a couple of yards down. >> the driver was caught and police say he is the suspect in two drugstore robberies. >> we did recover items that were taken. >> -- closer look at the items found inside the car. they were looking for a possible link between what happened here and a home invasion and sexual assault that happened in the oakland hills in the early morning. investigators tell us a woman living on wilton street heard her dog barking, went downstairs to make sure everything was okay when she was confronted by an intruder. she was sexual assaulted in her home, robbed, all the while her husband and children slept. >> the robbery occurred early today and they had a suspect description. so if they feel that maybe there might be some link, then they're going to go ahead and investigate all of the avenues and this is just one of them that they pursued. >> police are investigating the

link between the driver of this car because of what they found inside of it. police confirm that items taken from the mont claire pharmacy were found inside that same car. there may have been drugs discovered in the car from a drugstore robbery in san leandro several days ago. police are investigating if those items are part of the items taken from the home from the sexual assault took place. the suspect will go before a photo lineup. the victim will take a look and see if he is in fact the suspect in this case. reporting live in oakland, i'm sheryl herd, nbc bay area news. an oakland group is predicting outrage at the possibly of johanns that messerly being released early from prison.

he has served ten months of a two-year sentence so far. but on wednesday, a hearing will determine if good behavior and time served means he qualifies for an early release. the coalition for justice for oscar grant calls such a move unacceptable and shameful. and the group has scheduled a rally for wednesday. riots followed both the shooting of grant and the involuntary manslaughter verdict. this morning the port of oakland is moving forward with a plan to make the air cleaner to breathe. the port will cut container ship emissions through a process called cold ironing. that process will allow ships to -- the project will also reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50,000 pounds. nitrogen oxide is one of the main components of smog. at 7:07, more coming up on "today in the bay."

15 degrees warmer than where we were starting this morning. so when you start off in the low 40s and mid 50s, you obviously have a pretty good sea breeze. take a look at what's happening offshore, this is very interesting for this time of year, you can see we have got some scattered showers around -- and that's the reason why we're going to have to add in a slight chance of seeing some scattered showers today. an interesting day of weather across northern california. first the snow around the sierra, close to 6,000 feet and during the afternoon as this very chilly, almost winter like air higher up settles in across northern california, could have some snow in the sierra. for the bay area, we're talking highs 50s and 60 today and tomorrow. a chance for some isolated showers. for monday, we'll catch a break in terms of the moisture. temperatures are going to rebound close to the low 70s as we wrap up the holiday weekend. but the sea breeze going, it's still going to feel pretty cool outside as we go through these
