chp says a driver hit and killed someone as they walked across the expressway near bud avenue in campbell. police victim around 11:00 last night. they closed all southbound lanes so emergency crew could do their job. those lanes have&+

one of them is just a few weeks old.gyq mill 2 in his memory. police are looking at surveillance video taken from a nearby market to try to find rodriguez's killer. milpitas had two homicides in 2009 and none last year. san jose police are releasing information this morning about two homicides over the identity inveu]audb2jpvf who was shot and killed in her car. 18-yea35-year-old melissa is g -tronj4u ee. gradua h case of mistaken identity. investigators think that the deadly stabbing of an 18-year-old man is gang related. that victim's name is tron lee. he graduated from pegasus high school last week. police do not think that the two shootings ring related. there have been 24 homicides in san jose so far this year. up from 20 in all of last year. this morning, more questions are being raised on the disappearance of a hayward nursing student. in the men time her family is reward will help bring the young woman home safely.

her redell is live with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. michelle le is bra to be a nurse through samuel merit college out night. here in hayward taking part in a medical rotation as part of her course work at the hayward branch of kaiser. it was around 7:00 friday night. she took a break from her rotation. and surveillance tape showing her leaving the parking garage on site.xkv$ lbe with valuables left inside. but she does apparently still has her cell phone which she has not answered and that's one reason why the family thinks it is suspicious. why they are putting up fliers and offering a $20,000 reward, because they say ch michelle. her brother tells us she's very responsible and calls him on a regular basis. >> she has always been a better -- a better child --

weeks ago and without more credit, the government says we won't be able to pay our bills come august. tracie potts is live on capitol hill where the sticking point in the negotiations is medicare. good morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, everyone. in fact, that is expected to fail tonight because republicans control the house and republicans have said we are not extending any more credit. we are not approving an extension of the debt limit until we slice trillions of dollars out of this budget. democrats and republicans separately are negotiating that. we are told that they have come up with about $1 trillion in cuts. but the real sticking point here is medicare. republicans want to turn it into a voucher system. democrats want to change the way that doctors are paid and they don't agree on what to do with medicare. it is a huge part of the federal budget. they have got to slim down the cost of it but that's not politically popular, of course, as a result of -- no

negotiation, success with those negotiations. negotiations stalled and as a result of that, the vote tonight is probably going to fail. >> we hit our credit limit a couple of weeks ago. what happen it is this just keeps getting pushed off? >> reporter: well, what happens next is -- obama administration has said that we have until august 2. we can pay our bills until august 2 by essentially dipping into other funds. after had a we will start defaulting on some of our obligations. republicans are skeptical of that date. you don't see as much urgency there as do you on the democratic side. they think that we can probably push past that date. just a bit. >> yeah. happening to the government and lot of people as well. thank you very much. it is 6:17 right now. a stanford professor could get the nod to become the next u.s. ambassador to russia. president obama is expected to nominate michael mcfall important the top post. he's a political science professor and leading expert in

u.s./russian relations. the 47-year-old is the president's top adviser on the national security council. he's also a key figure in president obama's reset policy which aims to promote shared economic and mutual understanding between both nations. he serve order president's transition team after the 2008 elections. there was only one sidewalk open for a walk or bike across the golden gate bridge starting today. a live look at the bridge this morning. the west sidewalk of the golden gate will be closed for seismic retrofit work. east sidewalk is your only option until about september. bike riders will have 24-hour access while bridge walkers can cross from sunrise to sunset. it is the last phase of the project to retrofit the bridge. we all need goat along. bikers to the right and walkers to the left. i don't know. there has to be a system for it. >> yeah. hey, girls on one side and boys on the other. that's how they did it in grade

school. we are looking okay. 5:45 a.m., sun does not go down until 8:30 at night. we are getting a lot of daylight and showers to get through this morning. streaming onshore. very light in nature. and they are actually very quick movers as well. mostly south of san francisco, nice dry break at this time. lot of this action continues to stream into the north bay. so -- watch out important showers up there. probably until about 11:00 a.m. most of the bay area will see a nice dry break by about 10:00 a.m., cold air sets in. and that will keep our temperatures from the mid 50s, more like gradually climb up about one degree between noon and now in the city. that's how cold this system is. showers on the way throughout the day today. but then by 4:00 p.m., clearing. that sun will shine through. and moisture leftover for couple of pop-up thunderstorms. if anything severe does develop, it will break into coverage and let you know immediately. 60 degrees in oakland. just a very slight chance for that today. but it is that time of year when

the weather is warm enough to fuel those thunderstorms. 65 degrees in san jose. 66 in gilroy. here it is. your wet, windy, cool extended outlook. not looking all that great until we hit saturday. 70 degrees. we will see the showers really early saturday. the second half of the day sun will come out and be able to warm us up to the 70-degree mark. this weekend not great for outdoor plans. that will be your best bet. also another chance on sunday slightly warmer, 75 degrees. and look at me, laura. already thinking about street weekend. we just started the workweek. >> you concerned me. severe conditions come, we will break into tornado. >> tornadic rotation, there is potential. very slight but look at this year where we saw happening last week. not going to let our guard down. >> don't want that in our neck of the woods. good. we have been have to be warned. 6:20. a visit with the bay area native that's fighting in a remote part of afghanistan. and in tech today, twitter and linkeden looking to expand

welcome back and a good tuesday morning to you. as you are making your way back to work. no doubt after an extended weekend, beautiful live look outside. near the marining a district this morning. fine arts in the distance. it is 6:24 now. i want to get a check of the morning commute with mike. see how things are looking out there. lot of folks heading back to work. >> looking like the commute is back. we will show you 580 through livermore. westbound 20-minute drive now. we haven't seen that for a couple of days. folks took friday and monday off. lot of cases. and this is the commute that's back on a tuesday with the heavier volume as well. now it is -- letting up by the time you get past the avenue. you still have the speeds in the 40s as you are coming lou the area. not showing a heavy volume yet. all those folks will take a while as they get towards fremont. smooth drive to the south bay. 101 starting to sort itself out around tully road. still watch important the slowing at the off ramp and jump on the 101 here.

"nbc nightly news" took time to show a day in the life of a bay area native. 32-year-old army staff sergeant nick lewis is stationed in a remote part of afghanistan. he lost his parents and grand parents by the time he was 18. and he says that he, quote, became just a bay area stoner until he joined the army. now he spends most of his days trying to stay warm and dry around his wood stove and keeping his men live as they fight taliban forces. >> trying to act like that

hayward this morning and joins with us the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. michelle le's family says it would be very unlike her, out of character, for her to just up and leave without telling anyone. the 26-year-old nursing student was taking part in her medical rotations as part of her studies. here in hayward she left around 7:00 provide night during a break. surveillance footage does show her leaving in her car. and that's the last time she is seen. once police became involved officers found that car and her car and parked in a neighborhood and not far from the hospital. >> i think it is suspicious. i think any -- normal individual who think it is a suspicious as well. simply that her car was taken from the parking lot and parked a short distance away, secured. just left there. >> she didn't deserve to have this happen to her. just -- i just want her home. >> reporter: michelle le's

brother tells us his older sister is responsible, calls him on a regular basis, and they believe she does have her cell phone because it wasn't found in the car but every time they tried to call there is no answer. the family has posted fliers and is offering a reward of $20,000 to anyone that can help them find her. reporting live in hayward, bob redell. >> it seems like the familiar sly doing so much to find her. are police releasing very much information about, you know, whether her atm has been used, that type of thing? >> reporter: they have not released any of that sort of information. as i mentioned we do know there's surveillance tape that shows her leaving kaiser- kaiser-permanente. the only information they are release sing her name and description. we have her photo as well. >> thank you very much for the update. overnight an accident that killed a pedestrian in the south bay closed part of an expressway for a short time. chp says the person was struck and killed in campbell on the expressway just north of bud

avenue. officers say they found the victim around 11:00 last night. all southbound lanes were closed to traffic as emergency crews responded. those lanes have since reopened. the chp has not released any more information about that accident. this morning, a horrific accident in the north way. highway patrol is investigating a deadly crash on northbound highway 101 in marin county. it happened just after 1:00 near san antonio road. the chp says the car reportedly crashed into the center divide and then a van slammed into that car. this morning, police in the small city of rodeo are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. christie smith is live with more on the story. >> reporter: good morning. i want to show you what's going on here. now that the sun is coming up. that is that deputies seem to be focusing on the lot will going through it looking for evidence. this is next to where a man in his 20s was shot late last night. sitting in a van. neighbors say that it seemed

like the gunfire just would not stop. this is last tonight around 10:40. deputies believe the shooter was on foot. this is a very tight street. and there are would dead ends here that essentially met up. neighbors say because of the density, there are many apartments here and -- neighbors actually got their own weapons out for protection. they say there was running and yelling and people trying to take cover from what was going on. one neighbor says that -- where he is staying, they tried to shield a 2-month-old baby hoping a bullet would not pierce the wall. >> mom dived on top of the baby in the bathtub and is only 17 years old. this place, that has -- lady there in the corner, hiding in the bushes with her cell phone. she didn't have a chance to -- get out to get to her. we only got one wall roup the victim has not been identified yet this morning but deputies believe he probably lived in the area. no arrests so far. as you said the first homicide

of the year for rodeo. deputies telling me they still need witnesses to come forward. right now it is hard to see but there is a -- tow truck at the top of the hill and that's going to pull the van out and victim sit and the deputies say that's key to gather evidence and piece together exactly what happened here. reporting life in rodeo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> interesting to see if they have witnesses come forward. it sounds like there were a lot of people around by the description by some of the people at the scene. >> reporter: there were witnesses that -- who described sort of a scene of chaos. now exactly, you know, did they see a shooter and who they saw with weapons, we were asking that and they couldn't really say. they were just kind of description a scene of chaos of people running and yelling. that sort of thing. again, those are probably people that the department piece would like to hear from. >> no doubt. you thank you very much. oakland police are still looking for the people responsible for sunday night double homicide. 28-year-old la toya kennedy of union city and 29-year-old bush were shot on international

boulevard near 88th avenue. the shooting happened after a memorial day party hosted by the east bay dragons motorcycle club. in front of the club, tire marks from from a side show that started after the party. >> like young kids having fun. everything. and then next thing you know, pop, pop, pop. here comes shots. so sad, would of them got killed and one wounded. she is still in the hospital fighting for her life. >> a member of the motorcycle club tells the bay area news group the club's barbecue had ended long before the side shows began. it is 6:37. want to get a check of the forecast with christina loren. change in the works. >> change in the work, laura. we want summertime around here. at least i do. i want the dry weather but we have to get through another week's worth of wet weather across the bay area. hey, summertime just a couple of weeks away. yesterday was the unofficial start of summer and before you know it, we will be in the 90s inland. might want to enjoy this. this could be the last round of

rain. although we are seeing a pretty significant dip in the jet stream. does not look like it is going anywhere the next five days. this is what we are looking at. low pressure just offshore here. you can see it is producing quite bait of shower activity for the pacific northwest for us just spotty activity. mostly confined to the north bay at this time. but you do want to keep your umbrella handy as we head through the next 24-48 hours. as we are going to see several other pulses behind that system of low pressure push onshore. breezy conditions and with systems continuing to climb right over the bay area. it is going to be breezy today, windy this afternoon. windy this evening. tomorrow we will see another round of rain just in time for the morning commute. this is what we are looking at. a.m. showers for today. breezy to windy conditions later on. few pop-up thunderstorms definitely possible. warm enough for that. right now we are tracking these showers as they are happening now. real-time radar shows you. novato getting hit hard. same with petaluma. really south of san francisco, nice dry break. south bay, you haven't seen any action all morning long.

>> absolutely. it is frustrating, laura, when you have accumulated all those miles and you see the high ticket prices. and you are thinking i could get that ticket for free. sometimes you can. actually we got this info from a consulting group idea works. they tried 6,700 times to exchange miles for tickets. guess what. they were successful about two-thirds of the time. little bit better than last year. here is their advice. if you are going to try to exchange miles this year, especially this year, because things are already tight with the airlines, they are heavily booked, try the low-cost airlines, southwest, jet blue, at the top of that list, 99% of the time, they were successful with southwest. 79% of the time with jet blue. but when you get to the larger airlines like delta and u.s. airways, they were at the bottom of the list. only one in four tries were they actually able to get a ticket. if you are flying out of sfo, oakland, if you are trying to get out of town, go with those low-cost airlines and you are much more likely to actual lup find a ticket.

welcome back, everyone. here is a beautiful live look outside at the golden gate bridge. you know, starting today, if you are heading across the bridge, the west sidewalk is actually going to be closed for seismic retrofit work. that means that bicyclists and pedestrians have to share the east sidewalk for about four months until september. bike riders will 24-hour access while bridge walkers can actually cross from sunrise to sunset. it is the last phase of the project to retrofit the bridge. something to just keep in mind if you are headed off through the span. very nice there. mike also has some word on some changes to the cable car system in the city. >> that's right. folks come to the city and try the take a picture at the golden gate bridge. cable car lines also on a nice tourist attraction. lines will be active.
