the nation including the pacific time zone. i'm lynn berry. today we begin with the final touchdown. for the last time, the space shuttle "endeavour" has returned to earth. "endeavour" delivered a six-member crew early this morning beginning a new chapter, retirement. with more, nbc's jay gray is at the kennedy space center in florida. jay, good morning to you. >> and good morning to you, lynn. mission managers say from the start to this morning's finish that the final trip of "endeavour" could not have been much better. everything picture perfect as it landed here at kennedy space center earlier this morning, it was the first shutting and the last to put the finishing touches on the space station.

putting parts and supplies to keep the station goes there. it logged 123 million miles in space, 299 days it spent in orbit. now nasa managers turn their attention to what will be the final launch here scheduled to launch here on july 8th. that is the latest here from kennedy space center back to you. >> jay gray, thanks so much. president obama will sit down with house republican leaders to try to work out a deal before an august 2nd deadline. this after a largely theatrical vote to increase the debt limit without cutting spending. failed as planned by house republicans on the floor last night. nbc's tracy spots joins us from washington with more on this. >> reporter: good morning,

everyone. democrating said this vote was a joke. that vote would have given the united states the capacity to borrow almost another $2.5 million to meet its debt. as expected, it failed 97-318, most of those voting against it. in fact, every republican in the house voted against it along that will be a big part of the meeting today. he wants to sit down with them the white house says to listen and get new ideas. the big negotiation between the two sides to cut more money out of the federal budget reducing spending. their big sticking point is medicare. the white house says they are optimistic that they will cut a deal. the obama administration says they need to extend the debt

ceiling before defaulting on the budget. tracie potts for us in washington, thanks so much. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. the rescue of a stranded motorist in arkansas was caught from a unique angle by one tv crew. a reporter recovering flooding swung into action when the driver became stuck in high water. when a rope tied to his waist, he walked to the submerged car. he then attached the woman and she was pulled to safety. neither suffered injuries. both new york's bravest and finest joined u.s. service men for a morning ritual in the city's wall street area. the group took part in the eighth annual ground zero run, all to honor the american victims killed on september 11th. also in new york, sarah palin's non-presidential bus tour rolled into times square for a pizza

here are some of your top headlines this morning. an attempt by new york congressman anthony weiner to the photo that appeared on his twitter account. he first claimed he was hacked and then pranked. but at a news conference, he was uncharacteristically evasive when asked if he sent the photo and if he planned to report the incident to authorities. two iraqis living in kentucky have been arrested and charged with participating in an alleged plot to send missiles to al qaeda in iraq for use against americans. authorities say the investigation prevented the weapons and money from making it to iraq. the men boasted of using improvised explosives against american troops before moving to the u.s. in virginia, a bus driver has been charged with reckless driving after his bus overturned killing four. police say fatigue was a factor. the company, sky express, called it the first serious accident its had.

surprise consumer confidence fell to a six-month low last month. oil prizes rose to settle above $102 a barrel. apple added 3% on news ceo steve jobs will introduce new software next week, including a much anticipated icloud computing service. it will provide remote access to your itunes account thanks to agreements apple has made with a number of record companies. meanwhile, u.s. listed shares of nokia tumbled to a 13-year low after the company did away with its full year forecast for hand sets and services. parents flying american air lines will now have to check their stroller at the ticket counter instead of the gate if that stroller doesn't fold or if it weighs more than 20 pounds. finally, if you're travel to go australia anytime soon, you better watch your mouth. police in victoria could be able
