7:00 am
[ waves crashing ] [ gasps ] brrrr! [ giggles ] [ sea gull squawking ] good morning. politics and pizza. sarah palin brings her bus tour to new york city for dinner with donald trump. she made her most definitive statement yet about when she could announce a possible white house run. we are live with details. damaging to the defense. three riveting 911 calls played at casey anthony's murder trial, recordings that brought both anthony and her mother to tears. but do the tapes help the prosecution or the defense? and photo fallout. congressman anthony weiner lashes out at reporters for asking questions to a woman from his twitter account. >> do you want to ask a
7:01 am
question? this one interrupts me. >> he says he was hacked but many wonder why he's being so defensive. many wonder why he's being so defensive. today, wednesday, june 1, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television welcome to "today." i'm meredith vieira. >> good morning. i'm ann curry. lucky matt and al are on assignment in vatican city. >> matt had a rare audience with pope benedict xvi. i know you will tell us about that more later, but give us one sentence about what the experience was like, if you can. >> oh, my. it was very, very exciting, meredith. it followed an audience of 15,000, 20,000 people in st. peter's square. i walked up to greet the pope
7:02 am
along with archbishop timothy dolan of new york. it was very exciting. i'll tell you more about the gift we presented and the experience later on. >> it was so thrilling. it really was. >> al, where were you for all of this? >> i was back a couple of rows sitting with some nuns. it was great. we started singing. it was fantastic. >> meredith, you know how you always accuse me of acting holier than thou? get used to it now. >> oh, a warning. >> he has a little glow. >> exactly. >> a little glow. >> did the pope have on the red shoes, by the way, that he likes? >> he did. he had the red slippers on. it's a very moving thing. he went around the square in the pope mobile and was greeted by pilgrims from around the world who were extraordinarily excited. al was next to a group of pilgrims. >> that's right. when they called out that group that was behind us, they all
7:03 am
stood, these nuns, started sings. they had prepared a song. it was special. >> fantastic. matt, al, thank you so much. we'll check in with you in a bit. meanwhile back home, is it a prelude to a campaign or a public vacation? sarah palin is in new york where today she'll visit ellis island and the statue of liberty. but pizza was on the menu with donald trump last night. after that dinner, palin told reporters she could make an announcement about whether she'll run for president in a couple of weeks. more on that just ahead. >> also this morning, alarming news for anyone who owns a cell phone, meredith. after years of debate, they have now been placed on a list of items that could possibly cause cancer. how concerned should we be? we'll ask dr. nancy snyderman. >> first to the top stories of the morning. natalie morales is at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. "endeavour" landed safely this morning, wrapping up its final mission of a nearly 20-year career.
7:04 am
as it returned to earth, nasa rolled out the shuttle "atlantis," set to launch on july 8th. after "endeavour's" 122 million miles in flight, shuttle commander mark kelly said, it's sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy. a united nations nuclear safety team found that japan underestimated the risk of a tsunami on its nuclear plants. the team released a summary of its findings this morning criticizing japan's level of preparation for a nuclear disaster. the preliminary report, however, praised japan's response in the aftermath of the march 11 earthquake and tsunami. two f-16 fighter jets were scrambled to escort a united airlines plane back to dulles airport after a fight broke out on board sunday, officials say. the "washington post" reports the scuffle broke out when a passenger reclined his seat, upsetting the person behind him. nato will extend the mission
7:05 am
in libya for another 90 days. the statement took aim at leader moammar gadhafi saying nato will keep up pressure to protect the people of libya. and judges at the u.n. war crimes trial at the hague scheduled hearings for ratko mladic to face the genocide charges from the bosnian war. he spent his first night at the hague in isolation. now to wall street. mandy drury is at the stock exchange for us this morning. how is it looking? >> it's another big economic day. we got numbers on the economy. they suggest we are going through a soft patch, but the market rallied anyway. they were cheered for efforts in europe to contain the greek debt crisis. there is one positive side effect of the softer economy. that's lower gasoline prices. aaa says the average gallon of gas has now dropped by 20 cents from a month ago.
7:06 am
that's good news for drivers. the only question is whether it stays that way or even goes lower. back to you. >> we can hope so. mandy drury at the new york stock exchange, thank you. the miami heat got fired up, burning the dallas mavericks and winning game one of the nba finals. lebron, or kingring 24 points, taking the heat to a 92-84 victory. by the way, the pucks drop here tonight for the game one of the nhl stanley cup finals between boston and vancouver. that's at 8 p.m. eastern time on nbc. a little programming note for you. 7:06. let's turn it back over to meredith and ann. >> we'll get a check of the weather with maria who's in for al while he's on assignment at the vatican. good morning. >> we're talking about severe weather. severe storms and severe heat. let's talk about the severe storms first, rocking the northeast as we get into the afternoon and evening hours from maine down through new york city. d.c., gusty winds in excess of
7:07 am
60 miles an hour and potentially hail as well. we have the heat fueling the showers and thunderstorms. record highs potential from d.c. down into birmingham over into dallas, although looks like one more day for new york city and into d.c. windy conditions across the great lakes and maybe some unsettled weather in the northwest, including there is the potential for hail, heavy downpours, even tornadic rotation. we'll keep you updated all morning long. right now everything looks pretty good but the front is on the way. ann, back to you. >> maria, thanks. now to politics. sarah palin's bus tour has arrived in the big apple. last night she dined over pizza
7:08 am
with donald trump who opted not to launch a white house bid. what was that all about? nbc's mike taibbi joins us now with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning ann. it's hard to ever know what sarah palin is up to. that goes for her husband, todd, as well. he was seen getting into an airport taxi outside a jersey city hotel. i don't know what that means for the one nation bus tour, slash, vacation. sarah palin has never been a conventional politician. she says if she makes a white house run she won't do it the conventional way. stop one on the new york leg of the tour -- pizza dinner with the donald, donald trump, whose birther suspicions about president obama he voiced to meredith on "today." >> i'm starting to think he wasn't born here. >> reporter: and who, while his own poll numbers were about to plummet, found at least one prominent politician to support him. >> i do have respect for donald trump, for his candidness. >> reporter: all of which set the table for a public piece of
7:09 am
pizza together though no one seemed that interested in eating. perhaps there was talk about annoying reporters with questions. a press corps largely ignored by palin as she pursued the tour. >> that's the way we live. we're not used to calling up a hoard of reporters saying follow us. >> reporter: from washington and a grand entrance on a harley to gettysburg and the liberty bell tuesday, palin has attracted crowds and kept the press off balance, never announcing a schedule, so reporters were left to follow by convoy or by air. to the only question that matters -- is she running -- she gave several versions of maybe. >> we think it is still many weeks away before that decision. a lot of shuffling around. >> reporter: her favorable/unfavorable poll numbers don't add up to a win but it's too early for polls to matter. this time last cycle it was surely going to be hillary versus rudy.
7:10 am
while political pros say palin will go from contender to pretender sooner than later roger simon sees it differently. >> i don't think the bus tour is about building her brand or increasing viewership for a tv show. i think she's seriously testing the waters for a bid. >> reporter: back to the unsecret dinner with the donald. palin emerged to not quite answer that question one more time. >> when do you think you're going to make your decision? >> not for many weeks still. i think that there is really a lot of time. >> reporter: palin confirmed her agenda today will start with ellis island and lady liberty. after that probably boston and new hampshire, but she hasn't said specifically, at least not to us. ann? >> mike taibbi, thanks. msnbc political analyst michael steele is the former chairman of the republican national committee. michael, good morning. >> good morning.
7:11 am
>> she's calling it her one nation tour. if sarah palin is not run, what is she doing, michael? >> i think mike had it right. i think she's out there testing the water. i think she's experimenting with the limits to which she can take an unconventional presidential bid should she decide to do that. that's been her m.o. she certainly has the ability still to draw large crowds and really put the press in sort of atwitter, if you will. that's all part of the unfolding story of sarah palin over the summer. the one thing on her side now is time. i think in a very unconventional way she can approach at least the early stages of a presidential bid in an unconventional manner. time is on her side. she knows she can draw the crowds. she can get the press to write the story, favorably or unfavorably. doesn't matter to her as long as the story is there and that's part of the narrative.
7:12 am
>> part of the narrative this morning is pizza night with donald trump. i'm wondering how much does a trump endorsement mean to republicans at this point? >> broadly speaking, i don't think it has that kind of impact than let's say a president bush endorsement would have obviously. i think in terms of donald trump, a lot of the establishment in washington, d.c., see the effort as a sideshow. but out there among grassroots activists there was a concerted effort to get behind him and his effort. there will be those who pay some attention to who he supports or who he tips his hat to. clearly the dinner with sarah palin caused a lot of excitement and a lot of interest in that possibility with respect to her potential candidacy, but it's not as strong as it would have been had he stayed more in the campaign and had issues that really drove the debate.
7:13 am
>> at the same time, palin seems to delight in having a bad relationship with what she calls the lame-stream media. she's angering some republicans as well by not notifying them ahead of time. the lack of information is irking gop leaders in the states palin is expected to visit. could not playing well with her team backfire for sarah palin? >> not really. sarah palin is not about notifying the head of the party or a political leader in a given state about her whereabouts. she has her twitter network, facebook network, the social connection to the grassroots out there. she tells them when she's coming and they show up. >> you say she doesn't need the party as she moves ahead? doesn't she want to be on good relations with the republican party? >> that's not what i'm saying. i'm saying if you're going the run an unconventional campaign,
7:14 am
you're not going to go through the check box of notifying so and so of plans and get the okay. those leaders will get the information when she wants them to know it. i understand a party chairman being offput by not getting a heads-up, but that's how sarah palin has operated from the very beginning. she's not an establishment creature, not conforming to the ways you traditionally do it. her connection is directly to her base, to those activists out there who support her, not necessarily the leadership. it doesn't mean she doesn't or does need them. for her, the most important part of it is the people not the leadership. >> michael steele this morning, thank you so much for your good perspective on this. >> you got it. >> it's 7:14. here's meredith. >> ann, thank you. there is new fallout about a lewd picture from anthony weiner's twitter account. he claims he was the victim of a hacker, a point he tried to drive home on tuesday. luke russert is on capitol hill this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning.
7:15 am
congressman anthony weiner may have been a victim of the pitfalls of social media. washington is buzzing about whether or not he sent a lewd photograph to a young woman knowingly. the normally blunt weiner shied away from even the most basic of questions. this is the picture sent to a 21-year-old female college student in seattle from anthony wiener's twitter account. an anonymous man wearing briefs. the congressman said his account was hacked and he's the victim of a prank. >> this was a prank i have been talking about now for a couple of days. i'm not going to allow it to decide what i talk about for the next week or two. the objective of the person who is doing the mischief is to try to distract me from what i'm doing. i have made a decision. i'm not going to let it happen today. >> reporter: weiner's refusal to answer basic questions about the incident raised eyebrows on capitol hill. >> did you send it or not?
7:16 am
>> if i were giving a speech to 45,000 people and someone in the back threw a pie or yelled an insult, i would not spend the next two hours of the speech responding to that pie or that insult. >> reporter: some are also questioning why weiner didn't ask police to investigate the matter. his answer was the same. >> can you say why you haven't asked law enforcement to investigate what you are alleging is a crime? >> you know, dana, if i was giving a speech to 45,000 people and someone in the back of the room threw a pie or yelled out an insult, would i spend the next two hours responding to that? no. >> reporter: the woman who received the picture has denied any inappropriate relationship saying, i have never met congressman weiner, though i am a fan. i have never been to new york or to d.c. there have never been any inappropriate exchanges between
7:17 am
anthony weiner and myself. reporters wanted to know why the congressman was following a college student on his twitter account to begin with. >> did you follow her, how did you find her? what was the reason? >> i have said this a couple of ways and i will say it again. i am not going to permit myself to be distracted by this issue any longer. >> reporter: the questions clearly irritated him. >> i have to ask that we follow some rules here. >> i would love an answer. >> that's rude. you do the questions, i do the v interrupts me. how's that for a rule of the game? >> reporter: congressman weiner hired a lawyer for what he tells us, quote, will advise on the appropriate next steps. weiner has not been charged with a criminal act and he's not under investigation, but this is getting capitol hill quite abuzz. cliff stearns, a florida republican, says the incident shows hacking is a serious problem and as chairman it would be appropriate for the oversight
7:18 am
and investigative subcommittee to assure the issue of national security to protect our privacy and ensure our national security. we'll see if it happens, meredith. >> thank you very much. 7:17. here's ann. >> meredith, thanks. the criminal trial of silvio berlusconi has now resumed. he's accused of having sex with an underaged prostitute and lying to cover it up. now there are signs the case is costing him his grip on power. nbc's michelle kosinski is in milan with details on the story. good morning. >> reporter: blame it on the bunga-bunga. silvio berlusconi's attorney is. italy is calling this a stunning defeat, that his political party just lost these major elections even in his hometown. one of his lawyers said it wasn't because of policy or the economy, but because of the 74-year-old's partying lifestyle that landed him on trial could topple his government. many here are saying it's about time.
7:19 am
silvio berlusconi and his eternal grin has hardly let his many travel times of late get him down. at the g-8 summit he complained to president obama that leftist judges are out to get him. back home, at this youth event he says, i'm getting the desire to invite you to a bunga-bunga party. he's talking about the wild parties he's accused of throwing in the disco in his basement, the one investigators have called orgies. one of the dozens of young women prosecutors say he paid for sex, which he denies, they say was underage. ruby is her stage name. the belly dancing teen runaway also denies doing anything untoward for the gifts and cash she admits silvio berlusconi lavished upon her. he's accused of lying to police to cover up their relationship. since then she's become so
7:20 am
famous she charges $25,000 to show up at club openings, has written to woody allen hoping to be his next muse. even silvio berlusconi's dental hygienist turned dancer turned politician accused of recruiting women for him is on the cover of italian "gq." >> he's a self-made man. it is a dream mr. berlusconi made possibly for a lot of people. >> reporter: but, oh, the backlash. some ad companies are going after companies that objectify women which some say berlusconi started here with his tv channels featuring lots of dancing girls and daring ads. >> it's very embarrassing. >> reporter: you'd think scantily clad women come with cell phones in italy.
7:21 am
these naked women advertise pet food. >> it means more or less when his too much is really too much. well, now it is really, really, really too much. >> reporter: for a long time silvio berlusconi has been seen as sexualizing women, but at the same time he's an idol to both men and women. now more people are making a statement with votes that they have had enough. ann? >> michelle kosinski, thank you so much. i think we have as well. just ahead, an emotional day at casey anthony's murder trial as the jury listens to 911 calls vital to the case. why did the defense focus on the one voice you do not hear on the tapes? we'll explain, but first, this is "today" on nbc. [ coach ] in albuquerque, citi pre-approved my mortgage.

7:24 am
so the question is how concerned should we be about the new report about cell phones that could possibly cause cancer? we are going to talk to dr. nancy snyderman about that. >> plus, we check in live at the vatican where matt lauer had a live audience with the pope after your local news. staying active can actually ease arthritis symptoms. but if you have arthritis, staying active can be difficult. prescription celebrex can help relieve arthritis pain so your body can stay in motion. because just one 200mg celebrex a day can provide 24 hour relief for many with arthritis pain and inflammation. plus, in clinical studies, celebrex is proven to improve daily physical function so moving is easier. and celebrex is not a narcotic. when it comes to relieving your arthritis pain, you and your doctor need to balance the benefits with the risks. all prescription nsaids, like celebrex, ibuprofen, naproxen, and meloxicam have the same cardiovascular warning.

they all may increase the chance of heart attack or stroke, which can lead to death. this chance increases if you have heart disease or risk factors such as high blood pressure or when nsaids are taken for long periods. nsaids, including celebrex, increase the chance of serious skin or allergic reactions or stomach and intestine problems, such as bleeding and ulcers, which can occur without warning and may cause death. patients also taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers. do not take celebrex if you've had an asthma attack, hives, or other allergies to aspirin, nsaids or sulfonamides. get help right away if you have swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing. tell your doctor your medical history and find an arthritis treatment for you. visit celebrex.com and ask your doctor about celebrex. for a body in motion. so let's plant some perennials that'll turn up every year. trees and shrubs to give us depth. and fill it out with flowers placed in just the perfect place. let's start at the place with the best plants, people, and prices.

7:30 am
7:30 on this wednesday morning, 1st day of june, 2011. a warm morning in midtown manhattan with a sea of smiling faces lining the plaza. inside studio 1a i'm meredith vieira alongside ann curry. just ahead we'll check in with matt and al at the vatican ahead of our special show tomorrow on "today." >> it's exciting to see them there. also, compelling details from the casey anthony trial. there were plenty of tears and drama as the court listened to 911 calls placed by anthony's own mother. plus, do cell phones cause
7:31 am
cancer? it's a question that's long been debateded. now one of the leading health groups said using them could possibly increase the risk. first let's say hello to matt and al at the vatican overlooking st. peter's square. you have had a busy and exciting morning. >> it's been extraordinary. we got in early this morning rome time. we arrived around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning and rushed over to the hotel for a quick shower before heading to the vatican for the audience with the pope. 15,000 or 20,000 people here. and then a private moment with the pope and archbishop timothy dolan. >> i didn't realize the pope gives a benediction in eight different languages and is pretty fluent in all of them. every group he mentioned would
7:32 am
cheer, stand up and sing a song. it was special. >> at times it felt like a pep rally when they would talk about a group from portugal those people would cheer. other times it was solemn and spiritual. he mentioned even groups of nuns and priests from around the world and they would stand up and sing for pope benedict xvi. tomorrow an extraordinary broadcast. e we eel show you a day in the life of the pope. incredible footage of him in his private residence, touring the gardens, taking his meals, footage few fu people have had a chance to see. and we'll talk about the state of the catholic church in 2011 and some of the major issues that confront the church at this time. >> anne thompson will be looking at the age of the church and social media. we'll show you the secret archives at the vatican that go back centuries. and i will get to talk with the
7:33 am
swiss guard. i don't think i can put on the uniform, but it's a special, elite force that guards the pope. >> by the way, highly trained. during the audience with the pope it was about 85 degrees here in st. peter's square. members of the swiss guard stood at attention, the staff they carry, for an hour and 35 minutes, never flinching a muscle. we were dying. and they were making it worse. we have a great show in store for you tomorrow morning on "today." back to you guys in new york. >> matt, before i let you go, can you tell us what the gift was or do we have to wait even longer for that? >> i can tell you what it was. we heard this pope has a love for cats. so what was in the box was a beautiful crystal cat that, who knows, could be on his table. he seemed to accept it and like
7:34 am
it. we wanted to offer a gift to show our appreciation for the time and attention he showed us. >> thank you, guys. >> good for you guys. >> now on a different note, here at home the murder trial of casey anthony enters its seventh day. this after an explosive day of testimony from anthony's mother. kerry sanders is in orlando with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, meredith. for ten minutes and seven seconds jurors listened to three gut wrenching, riveting 911 calls. all the calls made on july 15, 2008 by cindy anthony. the calls may be among the most powerful evidence that the prosecution has to prove its allegation that casey murdered her own daughter. >> my grand daughter has been taken. she's been missing for a month. >> reporter: cindy anthony listened to her own haunting
7:35 am
words. the 911 recording made the day she said she first learneded her granddaughter had been missing 31 days. >> we're talking about a 3-year-old little girl. hope spring, orlando. my daughter finally admitted that the babysitter stole her. i need to find her. >> your daughter admitted the baby is where? >> the babysitter took her. my daughter's been looking for her. i told you my daughter was missing for a month. i just found her today but i can't find my granddaughter. she admitted she's been trying to find her herself. there's something wrong. i found my daughter's car today and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car. >> what's your granddaughter's name? >> caylee anthony. >> reporter: cindy anthony has long maintained her daughter was innocent listened as every word
7:36 am
spilled from the recording. >> how long has she been missing for? >> i haven't seen her since the 7th of june. >> reporter: casey cried. cindy told the operator casey spent the last month looking for caylee on her own. she had not called police or anyone else. >> caylee is missing. >> reporter: casey's father george was in the room. the defense claims he already knew caylee was dead, a drowning victim in the family pool, a claim he denies. cindy said casey claims a nanny named zanny had taken caylee. >> casey said zanny took her a month ago. she was missing for a month. >> i understand. can you calm down for a minute. i need to know what's going on. is your daughter there? >> i'm on the phone with them.
7:37 am
the s your daughter there? >> yes. >> >> reporter: cindy handed the phone to her daughter casey. >> hello? >> hello. >> yes. >> hi. can you tell me what's going on a little bit? >> i'm sorry? >> can you tell me what's going on? >> my daughter's been missing for the last 31 days. >> you know who has her? >> i know who has her. i tried to contact her. i received a phone call today from a number that is no longer in service. i did get to speak to my daughter for about a moment, about a minute. >> reporter: after prosecutors played all three 911 calls, cindy raised her read and asked for a break. >> can i have a break, sir? >> reporter: cindy left the courtroom supported by her attorney. casey never once glanced at her mother. when cindy returned -- >> casey? >> mom. >> hey, sweetie. >> reporter: prosecutors played casey's first phone call from jail. it, too, was recorded. >> you don't know what my
7:38 am
involvement is and stuff? >> casey -- >> mom. >> what? >> no. >> no, i don't know what your involvement is, sweetheart. you're not telling me where she's at. >> because i don't [ bleep ] know where she's at. are you kidding me? >> reporter: the jury is sat transfixed looking at monitors, writing the words typed along as audio played. some of them winced. not one lookeded across the courtroom at casey seated at the defense table. the defense replayed portions of the 911 call to demonstrate that george anthony's voice was never heard. of course their allegation or defense here is that george anthony was part of a cover-up. meredith? >> kerry sanders, thank you very much. linda boddin worked on casey's defense team for almost two years. she's here along with savannah guthrie, "today's" legal correspondent.
7:39 am
it was an emotional day in court. in terms of swaying the jury, how important are the 911 calls to the prosecution and the defense? >> for yesterday when you're the defense you suck it in, suck it up and say, oh, my god. however, when the jury starts to listen they will say, how did this advance the case? did it tell us whether there was an intentional homicide or was it an accident? as a matter of fact, if you look at cindy anthony's reaction to possibly leaving the pool ladder and it not being up or down or wherever it was, one can argue maybe she's having that reaction from guilt. maybe she understands what's going on and it's what the defense contends or maybe she's grief-stricken. >> if you look at the reactions of the women to 911 tapes, cindy seems so distraught listening to them. casey, far less emotional, to say the least. i thought it was interesting. kerry said the jurors never looked at casey which was interesting to me.
7:40 am

>> well, our situation is we have about $35,000 worth of credit card and personal loan debt. five accounts are open and revolving. six are closed or insolvent accounts. we just completed an irs audit for about three years for which we are going to owe about $14,000. i have $3,000 to apply to debt and i want to know the best place to apply it. should i put it to the irs? should i put it toward one of the loan accounts that the balance is about $3,000 and wipe out a monthly payment or should i maybe apply it to estimated tax payments for 2011? >> good question. jean? >> really good. so many moving pieces. you're on an installment plan with the irs for next year's debt, right? for last year's debt? >> it will be, yeah. >> part of the deal with an installment plan is you have to pay next year's taxes. so take the $3,000, put as much
9:10 am
of it as necessary toward paying the estimated taxes. anything left over you can put toward the highest interest rate credit card debt. but make sure you stay on time on those installment payments. >> okay. >> taxes are most important. pay down that debt. next we have a viewer e-mail from dan in new jersey. he writes, can a 403-b tsa or ira be converted to a roth ira? david? >> the simple answer is it can be. the easiest way to do this is to do what's called a rollover. he'd roll over money from the 403-b which is like a 401-k plan. then you roll it into the ira account. once you have rolled it into the account then you can make the decision. do you want to roll it into a roth ira? this year if you do he needs to pay taxes on it. it's important to ask yourself, where do i get the money to pay the taxes? are you going to take it from the ira account itself or outside the account?
9:11 am
do some calculations on google, put in roth ira calculations. take the money out of your ira to pay the taxes, for most people roth ira conversions don't make sense. >> what's the harm of keeping it in the 403-b? >> if a person has left a job they should move it. do an ira rollover so they don't pay taxes on it. then the money is in their account, in their name and they control it. >> more flexibility. >> we have a video question from a viewer. anna from washington, d.c. >> i applied for a program to go to south america to volunteer and get my tsl certification. i want to see if it will affect my credit. thank you. >> i think i skipped one there. we'll go ahead to jean. it's hard to hear. >> it was a little hard to hear. here's the deal.
9:12 am
when you have private student loans and federal student loans and you're not earning additional money, you can put the plans on deferment or forbearance if the lender allows it. you have to check with the lender and make sure you can defer. deferring is better than going into forbearance because then you are not paying on the loans and you are accruing more interest. people come out of school and have a student loan payment that's one size and it gets much bigger. the answer is, call your lender, see if you can defer. >> and sallie mae will work with her. >> we have kaya from portland. >> i had to suspend my credit card last year because of a high balance and high interest rate. but i have paid it off finally -- yay! >> good for you. >> is it best to keep open that card or close it because i know
9:13 am
that a card in good standing is best to keep open, but what if it was suspended? >> she wants to keep the card open. she wants to keep as many accounts open as possible. we have talked about it on the show many times. that credit utilization ratio is key with all of the cards, not just the one she's thinking about now. it's great that she paid off the balance, but she may want to charge a little bit now and then and make sure you use only 10% or less of what the credit limit is on the card. that can help you improve your score. paying bills on time, paying th balance in full when it's due. those are key things to help improve her score over time. the fact that she suspended it because she didn't like the high interest rate means it's probably time to see if she can negotiate for a lower rate or look for a lower rate card if she wants to use it. >> we have time for one more. we have a viewer on the phone. pam from louisiana. good morning, pam. what's your question?
9:14 am
>> good morning. we'll be retiring in april and have been told by our financial adviser to take out a mortgage on our retirement home instead of paying -- cashing out most of our money to pay in cash. we would have to pay taxes on the money taken out. we will make a higher percentage from the money left in ira investments than the percentage we have to pay on the loan. some of the money is in an annuity that will pay 70% of the monthly house payment. does this sound okay to you? >> david? >> i don't like it. i have been a financial adviser. my whole family are financial advisers. we try to get clients to pay down debt. the fact that your adviser wants you to keep your money in investments telling you it will outperform a mortgage is unlikely. especially if it's a second home. the producers told me you are building the second home and the mortgage will be at least 6%. either re-evaluate -- also before you build that home, sell the first home.
9:15 am
if you can't afford to keep two homes then you can't afford the second home. if you have to sell the first home in order to afford the second she's not the right candidate to build right now. >> all right. we appreciate the viewer e-mails, skypes and phone calls. thank you all. still to come this morning, a warning to parents, how to recognize if your teen is playing a deadly choking game. up next, cell phones and cancer. new information says they may possibly increase the risk. we'll tell you what you need to know after this.
