giants fan bryan stow says he's not guilty and he can prove it. good evening, i'm jessica aguirre. >> and i'm raj mathai. this is a special edition, we're on at 4:00 tonight because of the stanley cup finals. we begin with new developments, a man held in connection with the brutal beating of giants fan bryan stow claims he's not the one. today giovanni ramirez took a polygraph test to prove it. this is video just in, it shows ramirez being walked into police headquarters in los angeles to take the exam. his attorneys say ramirez has an alibi for the night of march 31st when those attacks happened and also claims his head was not shaved at the time, something witnesses described to police. ramirez is still not charged in the attack on the paramedic, bryan stow, but he was arrested for parole violations following a seven-week search for stow's attackers. the other attacker remains on the loose. get ready, because another round of wet weather is here, and if you were outside, you probably thought about it.

it is the first day of june, but it really is feeling a lot more like january. we're seeing our share of rain and thunder in the sierra and some unseasonal snow, too. jeff ranieri is here with a look. when you tmetd tha phrase juneuary, you weren't kidding. >> tem tratures are about 20 degrees off the t mark. let's get to the pattern right t now, and why this is happing. this trough of low pressure across california is more reminiscent of what we would see in january with this cold blast of air and aoho tse thunderstorms this morning. most of the severe activity is now pushing into t the central valley near sacramento. we're mainly dry at this point. we may see a few isolated showers tonight. if you're traveling near sacramento, they are under a tornado warning that could be extended over the next five to ten minutes. also tracking some heavy hail right across interstate 80 heading into populated areas. if you know anyone in rio linda, also roseville and north sacramento, they are looking at

a possible tornado here over the next 15 minutes. we're also tracking this snow up across the sierra, two to four inches here throughout tonight. and we'll have details on, yes, another storm coming for your weekend in minutes. thank you, jeff. and visitors hoping to kick off their summer in san francisco are learning somewhere in san francisco is always a little gloomy, but this year it's worse. as joe rosato, jr., shows us, one in store. >> reporter: the typical postcard view of san francisco normally boasts the city's rolling wooden ambassadors. only today, the actual view wasn't quite as scenic. >> i would still take the shuttle bus. >> instead of a line of visitors running around the cable car turnaround there was a pitiful sight. >> to sit down and not walking. this he have to fix the bottom of the tracks. >> reporter: as part of a major track renovation, all three of

the cable car lines are down this week leaving plenty of disappointed visitors. >> we've been promising our granddaughter this trip on the cable car for so long and now we're missing the cable car. we're so sad. >> reporter: with no cable cars in sight, visitors snapped photos of empty tracks. some got in line anyway. >> i think they wanted the most attractive stuff in san francisco is cable car. i like it. and i would like to take a picture of them and they're gone. >> reporter: while the work is going on, buses are standing in for cable cars, but it just isn't the same. >> for how long? >> reporter: a whole week. >> oh, yeah, that's tragic. that's going to impact -- that ain't going to be -- that ain't going to look too good when you're going home. >> reporter: it might not be so tragic if the weather wasn't so hit and miss. >> i was coming from winter and i was expecting a beautiful sunny spring, but it's been very cold and raining a lot.

>> reporter: but of course one visitor's cold front is another's dream vacation. >> we left toronto, it was 90 degrees. but we knew what the weather was going to be like. so we came down from canada to cool off. >> reporter: so the tourists settle for shopping, tour bus rides and historic street cars and all those other things that look good on a postcard. nbc bay area news. well, it's a slippery slope. a convicted sex offender moving into your neighborhood. how would you react? today hundreds of people in the south bay were confronted with that dilemma when they learned convicted kidnapper and rapist wayne page is now living near them. we bring in maryann favreau who joins us with how the neighborhood is responding. both sides have a legitimate voice here. >> reporter: police don't always go door to door passing out flyers like this when a convicted sex offender moves in. but in this case, they felt wayne pageas likely to commit more crimes and the public was at risk, which is why they

targeted a half-mile area surrounding the apartment off san tomas expressway, an area where there are four schools. san jose police hit the streets today going door to door in this neighborhood off san tomas express way. they're warning residents a convicted sex offender is now living nearby and they want people to know what he looks like. >> we're going out and knocking on doors, passing out flyers to let them know this person's here, they've demonstrated a propensity for violence in the past, we feel they'll reoffend, we want you to be aware of this erin p, know what they look like, and be aware this person may be around. >> i was surprised. >> reporter: now she says she will never let her 5-year-old son out of her sight, but she's worried about the other kids who play at the complex. >> well, i don't like it, because we have a lot of kids around here, and they play

outside almost every day. >> reporter: there are also plenty of kids nearby at four schools, including amber drive elementary. wayne page lives in this apartment. he served his time and for the first time in years is living with no parole and no probation. we talked to page himself outside his apartment about his crimes and the megan's law notification of his neighbors. >> this all happened 35 years ago. i'm not involved or wanting to do any such thing again, i just want to live my life peaceably, you know, in the community. and that's all i'm doing. >> reporter: but police are not convinced, which is why they want neighbors to know about page's past. so they can help officers keep a very close eye on him. police say in the '70s wayne page kidnapped couples at gunpoint when they were parked in cars and sexually assaulted the women. he committed those crimes in santa clara county. now he is living in an apartment

in san jose with his sister. maryann favreau, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, maryann. two separate carjackings to tell you about, two different parts of the city, with one common thread. in each case the carjacker took off with a young child in the backseat. last night, vallejo police say a toddler was inside her father's car when they were car jacked by an armed suspect just before 10:00. an officer says somehow the little girl let herself out of the car overnight and wandered into a nearby apartment complex knocking on doors for help. >> she was picking at the door like this. i said, who are you? where do you live? she say -- you know, she didn't say nothing. i said, i don't know you. i said where's mommy and where's daddy? she say -- i don't know. you know? >> another one to tell you about, a month-old girl safe tonight after a carjacker took off from a parking lot with the

baby still inside the car. the girl's mom says she left the baby in the car with the keys in the ignition, a major mistake, while she went in for five minutes into a food bank. luckily, the baby was found safe inside the car, but miles away in salinas. a pouring salt in the wound, some of the victims of the san bruno gas explosion are now being victimized again, this time by a contractor who left them high and dry. the contractor is going out of business. we're joined from the blast site. they're rebuilding their lives and i presume they're losing money and time here. >> reporter: raj, it's time and money for sure. take a look at one of the homes affected. you can see construction has just stopped, preventing the family that once lived here from getting back into their home and starting over. after that devastating pipeline explosion last fall. it's one of at least five homeowner that's are now in limbo because they hired vander built construction. the company just informed

residents they are shutting down its operations until june 6th, and during the closure, it would -- its leadership would be evaluating whether to close for good. reportedly the general contractors had problems paying its subcontractors. now after paying bills to vander built, some families don't have enough money to hire someone else to finish rebuilding their homes. while others who had had work completed fear they will also be responsible for the bill, now that it looks like vanderbuilt is going belly up. we have insurance and hoping they pay vanderbuilt early enough that all the subcontractors got paid. >> it's a hard time right now because of the economy, so you just don't know exactly what the reasons were. i don't know that company that well, but like i said, to me, the number one priority is your homeowner, your client. >> reporter: and we did contact vanderbuilt directly to find out what is going on.

the grandmother accused of kidnapping pay 4-month-old granddaughter then trying to pass off the baby as her own made her first court appearance today. 58-year-old erica gallon leg go was charged with kidnapping and burglary. they say she snuck into her son's home and took 4-month-old ramy right out of her bassinet as the baby slept. the family says they're glad she's behind bars and hope the charges will stick. she'll be in court next week to enter a plea. her son did not attend today's hearing. a look out for the blue tooth bandit, that's the warning from san francisco police tonight. this criminal approaches women in restaurants or bars. as a distraction, he drops his jacket next to them while he takes their wallets or purses

alcoholic and drug addict. >> i was 19 when i went to prison, you know? and that was the only clean time i really had. >> reporter: now rivera is learning to stay clean using the virtual world. so is cara pardini. >> i was a heroin addict and i got pregnant with my son who's now 3. >> reporter: while in treatment in santa cruz, they role play with avatars and communicate with their counselor whose avatar acts as a risk factor if are the patients. leslie straus plays a role of the drug. >> i will talk to them about how attractive i am, how i will make them feel good, how they can forget everything, how they can just be totally relaxed and feel good. >> you really expose them to the triggers that usually set their symptoms. the hope is eventually those

symptoms will diminish. after a little while, this is good enough to forget that this is not real. >> so when you're sitting face to face with somebody and being an addict, you're used to lying, you're used to manipulating. doing the avatar program, you look at all those things. >> it just helped me to understand, like my triggers and why i -- like, why i was doing the things that i was doing. >> reporter: organizers say this is no different than any of the games that sega or electronic arts puts out, but they ask how many mummies can you kill in those games, this program here, they say, actually might help them save a real life. the clinic isn't saying avatars will replace face to face therapy, but they believe it will help keep patients out of the back of a police car and feel what it's like to drive it. virtually. damian trujillo, nbc bay area news.

>> an interesting side know is the program's developers use the same technology to help returning soldiers deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. in world solutions will present its findings on the drug and alcohol component to the american psychiatric conference in washington, d.c., this coming august. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. a week ago we were talking tornadoes and it was jaw dropping, now it's just part of what's happening around here, right? >> it's wild. even a tornado warning right up until about 4:00 here, just north of sacramento. we want to bring you this, of course many of you have family, you also travel this way. this tornado warning has expired, but anyone around citrus heights, also into roseville dealing with this strong rotating thunderstorm that has been producing hail. upwards of a half inch to an inch of rainfall, right across the 80 corridor. as we take you to this heavy populated area, this suburb outside sacramento in roseville, this is that area of concern, it's now passed over interstate 80. we may still have a bit of

chopper video, they've been searching for a possible funnel to drop out of the wall cloud we were seeing form. but we did not see. take a look at the impact and the traffic on interstate 80, this coming to us from our affiliate in sacramento, kcra. if you're doing any traveling to sacramento, not only will have you to worry about this heavy rain and the slowdowns, but snow up in the sierra, 2 to 4 inches as we head throughout tonight. so be watching that. our neighbors off there to the north. meanwhile, right now across the bay area, we're pretty much dry from the north down to the south bay, any travelers once again encountering winter conditions across lake tahoe as we've seen this wild blast of weather here for the first of june. take a look right now, 60 san mateo, 63 livermore, 59 santa rosa and 59 novato. if you're hoping for a warmer day tomorrow, you're going to have to hope a lotter month

more. showers for the weekend, another storm coming our way for more rain, more cold temperatures, and, yes can, even more sierra snow that could have some of these ski resorts staying open longer. that weekend storm is still well out here. tomorrow we'll deal with lingering impacts of this low pressure. it could produce some showers, a mix of sun and clouds and staying in the 60s inland and for friday we're going to watch some more rain develop here late. so let's get a look. as we head throughout tonight, mainly cloud cover, spotty showers possible. then as we head into tomorrow morning, a few showers may develop near the north bay. nothing major by the noon hour. once again, some spotty showers, but by friday, as we advance this all the way through into the afternoon and evening hours, there's that next storm as it will line up off the coastline and bring us more additional rainfall. as for tonight, cold, near record-setting lows with 43 santa rosa, 47 san rafael and 40s in los gatos, and for tomorrow we'll have temperatures in the low to mid-60s, isolated

years. which airline leads the way? it's united airlines. they raked in the most with $5 billion in fees, followed by delta and american. for smaller airlines, these fees account for nearly a third of all the money they generate. power steering problems hiit t son ts one, it will affe 100,000 prius' worldwide. half of them are in the united states. toyota has issued the voluntary recall because the nuts in the power shifting shaft could loosen overtime. the driver may feel it's harder to steer while making a left turn. toyota's spokesperson say they've received a report of one accident, and it learned of the problem in 2007 but recently determined the cause and decided a recall is indeed necessary. things are changing right before our eyes. history being made in the south bay, that's next. t

nice video from our nbc chopper, it isn't exactly niagara falls, but this flowing water is making history. today's raising of this white gate marks the first time in 90 years the south bay's guadalupe river has been able to flow freely into the san francisco bay. back in the 1920s the cargill salt company turned this area from marshland into salt ponds. the buildings of these eight water gates is the state coastal conservancy's first step toward bringing back the marshes. next year, three more will go up. how about that? >> let's turn things over to jeff ranieri because we want to talk about those tornadoes that may have been spotted. >> no tornado as of yet spotted but look at this, coming in from the chopper.
