we will see. thursday, june 2nd. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. see if we get a break in the storms we are seeing. good morning, christina. >> good morning to you, laura. we are going to get a bit of a break today no maker rain on the way, light showers expected today, mostly north of the golden gate bridge and a lot of that precipitation we are expecting is actually moving through right now, so a dry break today, even better tomorrow, mostly sunny conditions and then we have a major system on the way for the weekend. we will break down your full forecast in minutes. it is 5:00 now. how do the roads look, mike? >> we are going to show that same area you were showing with the rain just north here. we are looking at highway 4. a smooth drive coming across the water, the ferry has been out of service today. seen it off and on that six-car ferry not an impact to the commute, but it will be, shout out there eastbound, still

closed. there is the bay bridge toll plaza, light rain now. hopefully a better come mute because there is no rain. we are watching this shot. 5:00 now, 150 san jose police officers could be out of a job after negotiations broke down between the city and the department. it couldn't come at a worse time. we are live in san jose with the very late hess. good morning, marla. >> reporter: laura, good morning. i just wanted to start off by giving you a visual, try to put this into perspective. behind markers private lot, officers park their cars, their cruisers and their motorcycles. i can tell you there are dozens of them waiting for their respective officers to arrive at work this morning to get the day started. imagine this, more than 150 of the cars could be sitting eye dell if the police union cannot reach a deal with the city. as one san jose city council member tells nbc bay area, it looks pretty dismal right now, more than 150 officers could be

laid off, as you mentioned. yefsd the deadline to get the deal done that fell through, though there is a chance it can still get done by tuesday. if not, the matter goes arbitration and 156 police officers will be out of work as soon as next month. the cuts couldn't come at a worse time, of course, san jose dealing with increasing crime, just over the memorial day weekend alone there were two whom sides in less than 24 hours. already, 24 so far this year and as we have been reporting, that surpasses last year's grand total. this morning, we have reached out to the police chief, chris moore,s can as well as a couple of city council members to hear about this. could have earring homicide last week, east san jose, he was speaking candidly to a couple of officers work that case and they told me they are bracing to lose their job in the near future, their happeneds are tied and

expected to be out of a job soon enough. tough economy, tough times for these police officers here in san jose. laura. >> for the society as well with, interesting to see what happens. thank you very much. it is 5:02 now. pg&e says it will miss a key deadline into the san bruno explosi explosion, a year and a half. they cannot produce reports by june 20th and will not have the documents until 2012. pg&e has missed a march deadline and has tentatively agreed to pay a $3 million fine but has not admitted wrong doing. utility stays cannot turn over the documents because looking for the records will burned them over high testing power lines, similar to those in october. the man accused of murdering a vallejo musician on highway 80 will be in court today. four santa rosa men are accused

of shooting dewey tucker on the highway near hercules in january of last year. police say all four men are suspected gang members and they shot tucker because they mistook him for being part of a rival gang. tucker was an accomplished bass play here toured with artists like lauryn hill. the men were arrested in january and will attend a preliminary hearing this morning. new this morning, phillip and nancy garrido learned their punishment today. after pleading guilty of kidnapping and holding a northern california girl captive for 18 years. christie smith is live in antioch with more on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah this is the home here in antioch where young jaycee dugard was held captive for years. i can remember being here when investigators were going through the backyard where she stayed. there was a series of tent and shedding and extension cords, kind of like a dirty campground. today it, as the garridos are sentenced, there are questions about whether jaycee dugard may appear in court to give a victim impact statement, though she doesn't have to.

also questions whether the gar lidos may give a statement as well. that's just something that no one knows at this point. they are scheduled to be sentenced today in el dorado superior court. nearly 20 years after they kidnapped 11-year-old jaycee dugard near south lake tahoe where she live and held her as a sex slave. philip garrido, he is now 60 years old, scheduled to be sentenced to 431 years to life. his wife, nancy, is scheduled to be sentenced to 36 years to life. the couple pleaded guilty in april. that's the latest from here, live in antioch, christie smith, today in the bay. >> interesting to see if she shows up. thank you very much. meantime, a san leandro man is facing serious charges after he reportedly set off a chain of crashes on highway 880 in oakland, shutdown northbound lanes for hours. officers arrested mon tran on suspicion of felony hit and run, dui and driving under a suspended license.

the accident happened just before sunrise yesterday morning. investigators say the 24-year-old drifted towards the right side of the road, struck a car, then spun out of control and crashed into another car, a big rig. four passengers were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. the crews spent hours cleaning up 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled by the truck. we showed it to you yesterday during the morning commute. eventually, all lanes were reopened later in the morning but it really made for a mess. union city police say be on the lookout this morning for a scam that took part of an east bay man's life savings. police say scammers approached the victim and claimed they were illegal immigrants who couldn't cash their wings of a lottery for fear of being deported. the man bought their story and withdrew $9,000 from his checking account and then gave the cash to two men who promised to share those lottery winnings with him but when they got the cash, those con artists, they just took off. investigators warn if the scammers got away with it once,

they are more than likely to strike again soon. this morning, unusual spring weather continues to stir things up in northern california. last week, seven tornadoes touched down around chico, north of sacramento and yesterday, yuba city was hit. national weather service say a tornado touched down in a rural area of yuba city, as the rain storm ripped through that area. look how dark. twisters struck not far from where three tornadoes actually touched down last week, destroying hundreds of acres of almond orchard. so far no reports of injury or damage, boy, see that coming toward you, go the other way. >> that's right. i spent some serious summers in yuba duba. not something you see in the summertime, not even the winter, when we get the most is severe weather, late spring now, the first official day of summer is june 21st i think we are going to have to wait quite some time.

we might be feeling the summertime maybe in january of next year. we are looking pretty good. no i'm just kidding. does look like that blocking ridge will be out there, will be back, a nice, dry setup have to wait until tuesday, wednesday, thursday of next week but good news, if you want the rain, if you don't want to go out there and water and wash your cars. see the showers are deteriorating fastly and quickly. it looks like as we head throughout the morning hours, see here from the futurecast, after 9 a.m., really wrap up and stay mostly dry the most part today. i think the only shower activity we will see today will be up in the north bay. then take a look at what is on wait for tomorrow. i haven't had more requests for the weekend forecast ever for this weekend. i know a lot of you have outdoor plans, a lot of you want to see baseball games what we are looking at, 4 p.m. the front arrives, heavy rain, especially toward the coast. closer you are toward the coast, the more rain you will get, the system is ex-sected to sit offshore and just dump rain along the coastline. so san francisco could get hammered, we head through the next few days.

come loose, causing faulty steering. about 52,000 will be affected here in the u.s. toyota says fixing the issue takes about four issues. for the rest of the news before your bell, we turn to today in the bay's nicole lappin live at cnbc headquarters. good morning, my dear. >> hello, my dear. talk about what happened in the markets yesterday. it was a nasty day, big selloff, looking ahead to economic data about that could drive us on unemployment, coming out in 15 minutes. looking ahead to productivity and retail sales today. big headlines making news. a judge has ordered american air lines to put its fares and its flight schedules back on orbits. american pulled its listings, of course, in december after orbills refused to adopt american's new technology. that basically lets consumers book their trips based on several factors, not just fares. the carrier is now involved in several legal disputes, i should note with third party ticket sellers as it tries to lower its distribution costs. also making headlines,

groupon is teaming up with expedia to offer big discounts on travel. their partnership went live yesterday. groupon has offered limited deals before with the likes of virgin airlines but never anything this big or this broad. so now you will be able to book hotel rooms, air fares, all sorts of stuff, all the stuff you normally book on ex-immediate for the low, low prices, like the commercials note. good for big families. >> yeah, you kidding? just going to pack them in the car. lucky we can get across town. thank you very much. a few clouds not going to put a damper on a san jose tradition, it kicks off this summer, 23rd annual music in the park will be held this afternoon at 5:30 in downtown san jose. today's main attraction is the greg kin band. kin is a very familiar face from the bay area, a great guy, a number of hit songs during the '80s. he also deejays his own morning show on radio station 98.5, kfox. music in the park held every thursday during the summer,

quite a bit of rain this is what we are looking at, 7 p.m., we head through tonight, only going to pick up a little bit of rain in the north bay, but as we head through friday, saturday into sunday, could pick up to two inches in the south bay along the peninsula and close to the coast, that's where we are going to see the most rain. friday, a dry break. you need to get outside if you have been putting off those outdoor activities because of the wet weather, tomorrow is your day. saturday, the rain moves in, relentless rain all day long, especially at the coast, i think inland cities might get a bit of a break but then sunday, sunday, sunday, going to get a break for the second half of the day. laura, overall, yeah, break out the galoshes, you're gonna need them. >> i guess so right. dust them off. thank you very much. 5:17 right now. you know, divers off the coast of florida got a little too close to comfort to one of the most unique looking predators of the ocean. this is actually underwater video of an eight-foot hammerhead shark swimming next to those divers. the shark, as you see it there,

has odd-shaped head with eyes set far apart, gives it a better visual range it hung out for a little while before disappearing into the deep. experts say the animal often comes very close to the shore during spring due to the abun dance of food sources there. hammerheads usually do not attack humans, but i like watching it from a safe distance in the video, don't you 5:18 now, another politician prepares to enter the race for president, swimming with the sharks, i guess. >> and take a look, whoa, that's little too close, going back off some of the traffic, plenty of space out there now, highway 24 to the called cot no major delays, show you usual suspects

in california one step closer today with a little help from spain. spain actually has a second largest high-speed rail system in the world. california high speed rail authority will meet with representatives from spain later today to sign an agreement that will share information about the best ways to run the system. the meeting will happen at 10 a.m. at the council chambers this sacramento. so very interesting. if you've ever been on any of those european high-speed trains, very, very nice, very impressive. >> also impressive, the japanese trains. >> really? i have never been. >> i went on the bullet train when i was in high school, it was really cool. >> how were the concessions? >> i was going to say, they had great food, some of the best curry i have ever had, japanese style. different on a buiil bullet tran i was a kid. here the ace train, beautiful, a

$20,000. all proceeds from the auction will go toward compensating some of kaczynski's victims. very interesting. this morning, another republican will throw his hat into the ring for the 2012 presidential race, i don't know if you've ever heard of him, but he is republican front runner and former massachusetts governor. his name is mitt romney. yep, here we go again, making official today. his campaign manager says romney will announce he has run for the gop bid at a chili cookout in new hampshire. romney ran for president in 2008 but eventually lost the republican nomination to senator john mccain. mechanical problems blamed this morning for an emergency landing of a flight carrying the l.a. angels baseball team. the plane carrying 60 people on board touched down safely at l.a. international airport last night after 9. an airport official says the delta air lines plane experienced possible hydraulic problems before landing. the team was returning from kansas city where they played

there earlier this week. luckily, they are all okay. silicon valley trust china? scott mcgrew says more trouble between tech companies and the world's second largest economy this morning. >> lauren this is very serious. the second time, google says g mail accounts have been hacked by clean niece hackers. now, there is evidence the hacks are coming from a government-sponsored school in china and accounts targeted belong to american diplomats, military and other governmental officials. in other words, straight-out espionage. google caught china doing this before and threatened to pull its business out of the country all together, something it did sort of halfway last time. laura, one of the things experts are quick to point out it suspect others companies in silicon valley are also being hacked but google says those companies are not admitting it this time. the last time they did cisco systems, yahoo! that kind of thing did admit that time around. not the only trouble for yahoo!

laura. you have something to take care of outside, probably want to do so today, even better tomorrow, we have a weak ridge shaping up for the bay area, still a few light showers this morning in the north bay, that is what we are expecting, showers will stay to the north, as we head through tomorrow evening, we have a major system on the way, let you know how much rain we are expecting in your city and exactly when coming up. right now, might have to get to work on time, 5:30, mike, getting busy out there >> so far, no dram mapped much smoother driving yesterday, had had all the rain, the good news, the maze and the speed sensors on the approach, 580, i will check on that that will affect your drive out of the altamonte past. oakland, nothing affecting your drive, we have all lanes open. i point that out, yesterday, we had the full closure, today, a nice drive for the nimitz freeway. i hope i didn't jinx anything. that is plexiglas but i'm still knocking on it. >> check back with you, thank you very much. this morning, fire investigators looking into the

cause of a overnight blaze at the a pleasant hill apartment complex. fire crews responded to the one-alarm fire in douglas lane near oak park boulevard just after 10:30 last night. reports say there was live ammunition inside one apartment unit actually involved in that fire. very dangerous. it was put under control a short time later. luckily, no reports any injuries. well, leaders at an east oakland neighborhood are asking something be done about recent shootings in the area. 200 faith leaders and local activists will be meeting with city and county officials to try to find some answers. they are pumping for increased use of the city's call-in strategy, a national program which move people involved in street violence away from crime. other cities across the country who have used this strategy have seen a reduction in shootings and whom sides. tonight's mouth meeting starts at 6:00 and held on international boulevard at thy

world ministries. san jose leaders are at a budget stale mate at the police department and means layoffs for dozens of police officers, just as the homicide rate is starting to rise. marla is live with an update for us. >> this is the private parking lot where officers park their cruisers and their motorcycles at the end of the day. more than 150 of these vehicles might just remain parked in the near future because there may not be enough officers to fill each one t is all because the police union and the city cannot reach a deal regarding pay and tension reforms. yesterday was a deadline to get it done but the deal didn't happen there is a chance it could get done by next tuesday if not, the matter goes to arbitration and 156 police officers will be laid off as soon as next moment. the san jose mercury news is reporting even if a deal is

reached, 122 officers would still be laid off. this all stems from san jose's $115 million budget deficit. six other unions, including the firefighters' union, have accepted pay and benefit cuts by as much as 10%. for the police department, the cuts could not come at a worse time. san jose dealing with increasing crime, already 24 homicides on record this year and that number surpasses last year's totals. more crime and fewer officers, not a good he equation to be face weekend. we have put in calls to san jose police chief chris moore and city council members to get their feedback on the issue and at this point waiting to hear back from them this morning. >> interesting to see if it is over just yet, as you mentioned. thank you, marla. 5:33 now. it is judgment day for the antioch couple accused of kidnapping, raping and holding

jaycee dugard captive for 18 years. phillip and nancy garrido will be in court today to face sentencing. phillip garrido faces 431 years his wife, nancy, 31 years before she will be eligible for parole. both pleaded guilty to all charges against them in april. it is unclear if dugard will be in court today. she does have a right to speak at the sentencing. we will be there to see. investigators looking for a missing east bay nursing student. they are focusing on her cell phone records. 26-year-old michelle lay disappeared on friday but police say someone used her cell phone several times on saturday. officers are tracking down where the phone was used and who was called. police i haven'ter viewed two dozen relatives of lachl she was work act kaiser hospital friday night when she took a break and never came back. her family is offering a $20,000 reward for her safe return. the man accused of beating

giants fan bryan stow has taken a lie detector test but don't know what the results are. giovanni ramirez says he was not part of the grewsome crime and offered to take the test to prove t his lawyers watched via closed-circuit tv and as ministered their own tests on tuesday. they hinted he had passed it. >> i thought it was a profession atlanta ex-examination, she did a fine job and i was very complimentary of it. that having been said york know what the results of that exam are but i know what my exam was yesterday. >> ramirez is possibly connected to a january shooting in henderson in nevada. henderson police are not confirming that so far. the person involved in in that shooting survived. escaping from alcatraz used to be survival but now it is sport. bob redell is live. going to take a plunge?

>> absolutely not it is a little business are this can morning. i don't know if i have the guts to swim in those cold waters behind me. good morning to you, laura, sunday morning about 2,000 triathletes leaping off a boat not far from that island out there that, of course is alcatraz, doing a 1.5-mile swim to shore 18-mile bike ride through san francisco plus an eight-mile run that's why they do call it the escape from alcatraz triathalon. we have kelly dunleavy, eric killson, eric has been doing this triathalon over 20 years this is your second year, you guys are obviously well experienced. curious what the reputation is of this particular triathalon when you compare it to others. >> it has been around longer than a lot, triathalon is a pretty young sport, i think this maybe one of the oldest races and always the best, it is the best and it is the hardest. lots of fun. >> what makes it the best and the hardest, what is the challenge? >> well, the layout that we have

here in san francisco is just a great canvas for a great triathalon and the management of img don't mess around, put on a great race, why the athleteses, pros come back, it is first class. it is iconic, get to play around in alcatraz, run by the golden gate bridge, the sand ladder, just a great way to stay felt. curious the weather this weekend, water temperatures, more than you're expecting, do you deal with a change like that? >> i think one of the crazier races, alcatraz races in a while. my understanding, the current will be pretty strong, going to be range, get out of the water and get on your bike and head uphill and down hill in the rain. so that is going to be hard. >> why do you do this? >> it's fun. it's fun. >> yeah? >> same thing. it's challenging. there's lots going on in the world right now no gold watch after 30 years.
