safe and bring that suspect to justice today, friday, june 3rd, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to "today" on a friday morning, 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm meredith vieira. as we go to air, news is breaking that john edwards was just indicted. we'll go right to lisa myers. lisa? >> reporter: meredith, this is shaking up as a very bad day for john edwards. we just have word that he has, in fact, been indicted on criminal charges having to do with the cover-up of his affair with rielle hunter. >> i'm not making any comment. >> reporter: a key member of john edwards' legal team arrived
7:02 am
in raleigh thursday night, a lawyer experienced in political scandal. greg craig previously represented president clinton in his fight against impeachment. >> i do. >> reporter: like the impeachment, the criminal investigation of john edwards is steeped in deception, scandal, and betrayal. >> this is ridiculous. i have been in love with the same woman for 30 plus years. >> reporter: at issue, more than a million dollars provided by donors to keep edwards' pregnant mistress, rielle hunter, in hiding while he was running for president. rachel "bunny" melon, the heiress and edwards supporter, provided $700,000 in checks sent through her decorator. one was in a box of chocolates. she said she was helping edwards with a personal problem but had no idea what it was. edwards' finance chair paid to help hide hunter away in lavish homes and fly her around in a
7:03 am
private jet. >> we already know john edwards acted badly. the only remaining question is were john edwards' activities criminal or not. >> reporter: edwards claims he knew nothing about the money used to cover up the affair. >> i have never paid a dime of money to any of the people that are involved. i never asked anybody to pay a dime of money, never been told any money has been paid, nothing has been done at my request. >> reporter: prosecutors maintain though the funds didn't go through the campaign they amounted to illegal campaign contributions meant to further his candidacy. edwards' lawyers argue they were gifts from friends designed to hide the affair from edwards' wife, elizabeth, who had breast cancer and died last year. whatever happens today since the scandal broke, edwards is rarely seen in public. we did recently find him at his son's baseball game.
7:04 am
ironically across the way at the same field was andrew young, the former aide who kept hunter in hiding and became a key witness against edwards. edwards' lairs say he has done wrong in his life because did not break the law. they accuse the justice department of wasting millions of dollars on a case that doesn't belong in criminal court. >> lisa, we know there were ghoeshgss under way for some kind of a plea deal. do you know the specifics of what the prosecution was looking for and what the edwards' team was looking for? >> reporter: our understanding is that all along the prosecution has insisted that john edwards plead to a felony. he has not been willing to do that in part because it would almost certainly cost him his license to practice law, which is something he hopes to return to once this scandal is over. i know that he was considering a plea agreement last night and rejected it this morning, and

that is what set all of this in motion, matt. >> lisa myers, who's been covering this story closely for us, reporting from raleigh, north carolina. thank you very much. it's now four minutes past the hour. here's meredith. >> thank you. we have more breaking news. this morning's disappointing unemployment figures that have stocks down just 30 minutes into the trading day. nbc's tom costello has the latest on this. tom, good morning to you. >> hi, meredith. 54,000 jobs created in may. they expected three times that money, and with that, the unemployment rate is up to 9.1%. the economy right now is all about jobs, retail sales, manufacturing, even europe and japan. there's a lot to worry ab, so the question is this -- a slowdown or a bump in the road or maybe something even more serious than that? >> we won't give up. we do not give up. >> in los angeles, 3,000 homeowners gathered for
7:06 am
one-on-one time with a refi specialist, desperate to save their homes. one was hoping to hold onto her home after her husband got laid o off. >> not knowing what the future has in store for us is the most difficult part. >> reporter: the nation's housing prices remain a huge obstacle to a full economic rebound. >> we simply have too many houses. during the boom, mms of homes were built that we don't need, and until young folks find good-paying jobs so they can become home owners we're not going to get rid of those millions of homes in foreclosure. >> reporter: whatever economic recovery was under way earlier this year is now very much in question. home prices at their lowest level since 2002, a decade of home equity wiped out. manufacturing growth is slowing, jobs growth, slowing, car sales and consumer spending down, unemployment seems perpetually stuck, and something that hits every household and business, gas prices near $4 a gallon. as if that's not enough, there's plenty to worry aboverseas from the middle east to europe and
7:07 am
asia. >> a debt crisis in greece that is yet to be solved. frankly, we've been dealing with it for a year and a half. that appears to be worsening in some ways, and you'll stiff got the ramify kags of the terrible earthquake in japan. >> reporter: the pessimism has taken hold on wall street. the dow is down nearly 5% from its high in may. bond yields are paying less. that hurts retirees on fixed incomes. to get things moving, the government has cut payroll taxes while the fed has pumped its $600 billion of stimulus money. but more government spending is, unlikely, given the political battle over the debt ceiling in washington. >> we basically had a massive coronary during the financial crisis. we're lucky we're not dead. financial stimulus and monetary stimulus got us to the stage where we're heal, but we're still in a lot of rehab and rehab can take a very long time. >> just after 7:00 on the west coast and the dow is down more than 100 points. how long this will last is anyone's guess.
7:08 am
earlier in the year, economists were hoping we'd see the economy grow more than 4%. now they're saying we may be lucky to see 2%. >> tom costello, thank you very much. cnbc's melissa francis, good morning. >> good morning. >> to pick up where tom left off, economists in the past few months were predicting the economy was finally gathering some steam, only to be disappointed month after month. you see these dismal numbers. what happened here? >> this is a really bad number. economists had been expecting the economy would add about triple this many jobs this month, and they are blaming everything from the weather to the slowdown in japan. but the bottom line is we're just not adding a lot of jobs right now, and that's hard for the housing market, it's hard on consumer, it makes an economic recovery a lot less likely. >> austan goolsbee, one of the president's economic adviser, put out a statement this morning. let me read this to you. so, is this just one of those bumps or is it timp mattic of a
7:09 am
larger problem that we have? >> you know, the evidence just seems to be mounting that this soft patch is getting softer and softer. if you're looking for a silver line, we did ad jobs this month. the number is low, 54,000, nothing like what was expected, but it's not a negative number. still, we've seen negative numbers or worst than expected numbers on gdp so far this month, a lot of different data figures. a lot of economists are worried we're heading for a major slowdown. >> even though we've added jobs, the pace of job growth has been too slow to reverse much of the damage done by the recession, which has some people concerned we could be heading into another recession. >> economists are not quite that serious yet that it's another recession. it's more like our recovery is slowing down. and of course that's bad news for the president. we haven't seen a sitting president re-elected with an unemployment rate over 7.2%, and right now, as we know, we're sitting at 9.1%. we're a long way from that level. >> any way the numbers could go down that significantly by the
7:10 am
next election? >> it's tough. we're not heading in that direction. it was 9% last month, so it's getting worse, not better. that's a big jump from here. we would have to see the economy really grow and add a lot of jobs and that's looking less and less likely. we had bright spots with this report. where were the real job, what area? >> the helle sector is one, where we see jobs added, but other places, you know, private sector, you know, we saw some jobs added but hospitality fell, we get retail unemployment, that fell as well last month. some of the places we had seen improvement we're seeing weakening temporary jobs are about the same as last month. we like to see those fall because it means that employers are adding jobs that are ferm innocent rather than temporary. it's hard to find bright spots here. we're pointing at the fact that the economy at least didn't lose jobs. that's something. >> if you're one of those 14 million unemployed workers watching right now, where is the hope? >> the hope is in health care, somewhat in education, but we did see government jobs fall

7:35 am
later today, the jury will hear this jailhouse interview where that drowning claim was discussed. >> someone just said that caylee was dead this morning, that she drowned in the pool. that's the newest story out there. >> surprise, surprise. >> reporter: it's unclear how the jury will square that comment with her defense. >> kerry sanders, thank you very much. savannah guthrie, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> you listened to the tapes. it's very clear why the defense didn't want these admitted into this case. >> no question about it. now what the jurors are seeing and hearing in real time is casey anthony tell lie after lie after lie. this is important for two reasons. not only does it raise questions about what the real truth is, what she's trying to hide, remember, in order for the jurors to buy the defense's theory that this was an accidental drowning they have to believe one person only.
7:36 am
that's casey anthony. at this point, she has no credibility with the jurors. >> reporter: as you look at the split screen with her father, george, on the left taking part in this conversation, keep in mind that the defense is putting forward a theory that george discovered caylee's body in the swimming pool and then helped cover up the fact that she drowned. this is the defense's idea. does anything that was recorded in the tapes back them up on that based on what george says? >> not so far. not only that. during the police interrogation they offered her this theory. maybe the child died in the swimming pool. casey sticks to her story. no, it's the nanny that took the little girl. the other point i would make about the tapes is george anthony is made out to be an awful villain who molested his daughter since the the age of 8 but you see moments of tenderness between george and his daughter where he says, i miss you, sweetie. she says, you have been the best dad and the best grandfather. these tapes are difficult for the defense on a variety of
7:37 am
levels. >> if i'm a member of of the jury, i'm sitting here listening to that one recording in particular where she's telling her mother and father about the sister of the nanny we now know didn't exist and the detail she goes into with the name and then the incredible detail she goes into in terms of the car that the sister was driving. you're sitting there as a juror thinking, she is making all of this up and she's weaving quite a tale. why should i believe anything else? >> exactly. she has a fundamental credibility problem. they can watch in real time. think about how powerful the videotapes are. this isn't a police officer reading a statement. they are watching it in real time. how elaborately she weaves lies. the defense acknowledged these are lies. the other issue i would mention is just her demeanor. she's talking to veteran b detectives on this police tape, taking them to universal studios claiming she worked there,
7:38 am
weaving intricate lies with all of this confidence. this is not somebody who comes across as a victim. yet again if you want to believe the defense's theory you have to believe she was so afraid of her father that she told this lie, covered up the accidental death of caylee. the tapes are devastating for the defense. >> savannah guthrie, thank you very much. let's get a check of the weather now from al. >> thank you very much, matt. new kids on the block, backstreet boys less than an hour away. here we are on top of this huge crowd we've got up here. i mean, they are all out here at this time for nkotb and bsb. not too bad. you guys are great. wow. we have folks across the street over there. check it out. wow. man. they are everywhere. let's look and show you what's going on as far as the weekend ahead. we have the record heat
