good evening. here for this special 8:00 edition. we're on late tonight because of the stanley cup finals. we will begin with the rare downpour that is breaking records this weekend and causing problems all over the bay area. from outdoor events to the freeways. kimberly is in walnut creek where the rain put a damper on the art and wine festival.

first we'll check with the meteorologist. rob, you called it. this is setting new records. >> really just surprising how much we've broken these records. you talk about june rainfall. it doesn't take a lot of rain to break records but look at the numbers we've seen today. still adding these totals up, the rain is still falling in some parts of the area. san francisco, more than an inch of rain has fallen so far. look at oakland. almost an inch and a half of rain blasting right through that only tenth of an inch of rain which was the old record. you can see in the santa cruz mountains, now approaching three inches of rain. you can see the very impressive sight on the satellite radar view. it is spinning off to the west and these bands of showers, rotating through the bay area. the north bay, east bay, back to san francisco. we're seeing a few wudly scattered showers. still hanging on to some showers. stfew forming just off to the ea of san jose that are crossing off to the northwest. from all the morning rain now, we're seeing scattered showers.

as we head into your sunday forecast, could it change to scattered showers and thundershowers as we wrap up the weekend. although this is not good news for any outdoor plans today, to say the least. joining us now with that part of the story, let's to go nbc bay area kimberly tere who joins us live from the east bay. >> reporter: normally the walnut creek art and wine festival is bustling with people. the last shuttle pick-up is about this time. as you can see, no one is waiting for the shuttle bus because no one is still here. we showed up at 5:30. save for a few vendors, the place looked pretty empty because of the rain. officials at the walnut creek chamber of come here's have put on this event for 30 years say it has never rained like this before. we heard one vendor joke, this is normally where she gets her first sun burn of the season. instead she and every one else got a mix of cloud cover, sprinkles, heavy rain and even some short bursts of sunshine today. vendors say they're disappointed that mother nature kept the crowds at bay.

and some stayed open despite the rain in hopes of drawing in some last-minute customers. >> it's not normal. this is crazy! >> my birthday weekend. my tradition is to come to the art and wine festival. i'm doing it regardless of what mother nature gives. >> it's soggy. a lot of vendors have closed up because of the weather. so kind of sad. not like it normally is. >> reporter: what is it like normally? >> busy, sunny. >> reporter: and as rob mentioned, this crazy weather is seen across the bay area where everything remains a bit soggy this evening. city workers in the north bay were busy with downed trees and there were multiple accidents on city streets and highways. most people we talked to here say they are ready for the sunshine. they are ready to trade in those umbrellas for some shorts and tank tos and flip flops. nbc bay area news. >> okay, thank you. in san francisco, grim news. a second firefighter has died as

a result of that devastating fire. tony valerio died this morning. his death comes two days after the department lost vincent perez. both men worked on engine company 26. monty has the story tonight. >> reporter: this news is being felt especially here at fire station 26. people have been coming by to drop off cards and flowers and to express their condolences. as you can see behind me, some black draping has gone up on the outside of this building to indicate that these firefighters are in mourning. tony valerio lost his fight for life shortly before 8:00 this morning. >> today we grieve the loss of another firefighter. another member of the san francisco fire department. >> reporter: members of fire engine company 26 were among dozens of firefighters standing at attention as the casket of 53-year-old tony valerio was taken out of san francisco general hospital, draped with an

american flag. later, you can see the grief written on the faces of his colleagues and friends. valerio's brother expressed the family's shock. >> i've had a lot of trouble in the last couple days sleeping. i can't even think about life without him right now. i don't know. it seems like he is still here. i can't quite process that he is actually passed. >> reporter: valerio and lieutenant vincent perez were both killed after being caught in a flashover while fighting a fire in diamond heights. perez died that same day. valerio was severely burned and had been on a ventilator. doctors say he fought to stay alive but it was not a fight he could win. >> we try to do everything we can. over time, all these injuries were just too much for him. >> reporter: as firefighters tried to comfort one another, san francisco mayor ed lee paid tribute to valerio who worked for the city as a firefighter and paramedic for 27 years. >> to know that anthony and

vincent have been part of a very, very tight family at station 26. >> reporter: valerio was one of seven children. his sister said she'll always remember her brother's great sense of humor and the joy he brought to those around him. >> he was full of life. he traveled, he was a great uncle to my kids. as i always say, my best brother ever. >> reporter: and flags all across the city are flying at half-staff tonight in memory of these two firefighters. we're told the funeral arrangements for both men are pending. live in san francisco, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. police have arrested a suspect in milpitas's first homicide case of the year. investigators are not releasing the suspect's identity, but they believe they have the person responsible for gunning down 43-year-old alfredo rodriguez. the shooting happened just before 4:00 monday morning on south maybe street. grainy surveillance video from a

nearby car repair shop showed a silver honda leaving the scene. this is the first murder case in milpitas since 2009. that deadly e. coli outbreak continues across europe with no siphon slowing. in the last two days, another 200 people have fallen ill. raising the total to over 1,800 people sickened in a dozen countries. 18 people have died. today german authorities took a closer look at a restaurant that may be linked to the outbreak. so far all of the cases have been linked to northern germany. expert say this mutant strain of e. coli is highly toxic. its incubation period unusually long and it has been causing more severe illness. >> it's unusual in this situation is that the percentage of people who have severe complications is higher than we expect. >> reporter: tonight we are hearing that at least four americans who were in germany this month have been infected. health officials in the u.s. emphasize the american food supply is safe.

shipments of cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce from germany and spain are being tested before they go to stores. less than 1% of all u.s. produce imports come from those countries. coming up next, it appears the u.s. has dealt a major blow to al qaeda in pakistan. u.s. officials releasing new details about a drone attack on key terrorist leaders. >> to me it was just, i need to get this guy and he needs to go to jail. that's all it was for me. you don't point weapons at children. plus, an iraq war veteran being held a hero for what he did right here at home. see how the military man and father took out a gunman. and the new park unveiled in a soggy san francisco this morning.

the death but as nbc bay area's brian moore reports, the strike puts more strain on american/pakistani relations. >> reporter: a top al qaeda leader and potential successor to osama bin laden is reportedly among nine people killed in a u.s. drone strike in northwest pakistan. though the pentagon is not yet confirming the death, ilyas kashmiri is high on the list of most wanted terrorists in pakistan. he is said to be responsible for several attacks on u.s. forces in afghanistan and the accused mastermind of the mumbai massacre in india that kill more than 160 people in 2008. >> money flowed through his hands. training was done at his behest and his direct. he was the field supervise over effort of al qaeda and getting rid of this guy is really, really important and make both europe and the united states much safer. >> reporter: kashmiri's death is being reported by local pakistani officials and his followers who vow to take revenge on the united states.

hundreds of dedicated cycleivities didn't let the rain stop them from showing their support for putting an end to aids. part of life-cycle ride formed this number 30 with a giant red aids ribbon. the ride begins tomorrow. it marks 30 years since the first case of aids was reported in the united states. >> really to commemorate and honor all the people that we've lost to hiv and aids and remind ourselves why we're doing this ride. >> reporter: the ride is 545 miles long. this year, so many people signed up that organizer had to close registration at 3,000 riders. the event is expected to raise $12 million to fight aids. this is a story we first showed you last night. an army veteran running errands with his children when he finds himself staring down the barrel

of a gun. as mark potter reports, the father and military man is being hailed a hero for what did he and it was all caught on camera. >> reporter: on leave with his family in sarasota, florida, staff sergeant eddie peebles had no reason to respect that while out with his kids, his battlefield skills would be tested and recorded on a security camera. visiting a bank two of his boys, he came face to face with a man with a gun who police say was there to commit robbery. peebles can be seen in the background, shielding his children from harm. >> he's pointing a weapon right at me. i don't care. i'm trying to get my children out of his line of fire. >> reporter: but the gunman looming, peebles tells his kids to get under the seats and moves chairs in front of them for more protection. soon, peebles said, the gunman turned and threatened one of his boys. >> he can see my son. my son is looking at him. he points the gun and he said, if anyone does anything, the

kiddie is going to get it. >> reporter: police identified the robber as 34-year-old matthew rogers and say he walked out of the bank with ten of thousands of dollars. after telling his kids to stay put, he followed rogers outside and headed forly rental van. >> to me it was just, i need to get this guy and he needs to go to jail. that's all it was for me. you don't point weapons at children. >> reporter: across the parking lot, he used his van to block rogers' car. then used martial arts moves he learned in the military to pin him to the ground until deputies arrived. >> which was bad for me. i'm holding the weapon in one hand and a bag of money in the other and there's money everywhere. >> reporter: as it turned out interesting gun was a realistic fake. the money was recovered. and peebles' son had an important question. >> when i came back in the bank, he stood up and he said, daddy, did you get that bad man? and i said yeah, i got that bad man. and everyone started clapping in the bank. that was good. an award by the sheriff and for his kids, his status as a super hero dad was reaffirm. mark potter, nbc news, miami. >> i'm thinking he deserves a very nice father's day gift this year. let's turn to our weather news in the bay area. take a look at the photo pose nbc bay area viewers showed today. here come the bride. this outdoor wedding, still a happy celebration even without the usual june sunshine. they tied the knot not quite the wedding they were pictures for june 4th but lovely nonetheless. and rob, back again. you did warn everyone to pack their umbrellas this weekend. ? congratulations to the happy couple andy, did have to dodge a few rain drops on your wedding day. and unfortunately, we saw rain all around the bay area to start the day. and look at the number. even if this were january or february, these would be impressive rainfall totals. almost an inch of rain. close to an inch and a half around oakland and san francisco. all three locations seeing records today and about a half

inch of rain for most of the north bay. some of the hills, close to three inches of rain. we've seen some pretty pictures. look at that rainbow. san jose, we had some showers moving off to the east. sunlight giving us that rare glimpse, looking off to the east a bit earlier this evening. a few rain bows after the outright rain we saw earlier this morning. notice this compact area of low pressure offshore, holding its position. it is allowing itself to gather up the clouds and some of this moisture will spill toward the coast. heading toward tomorrow which will reintroduce more showers in the forecast. still, we're seeing a little bit of rain around morgan hills, south of san jose, the foothill seeing some showers. thing have kind of dried out. toward the east bay, same story toward the north bay for now. that area of low pressure is going to slowly wobble toward the coast. so tomorrow, we should see more sunshine. that cold air aloft on top of that june sunshine, warming things up below.

may see a few more isolated showers and maybe some thundershowers. and lingering showers taking us into about monday. then the shower should shut down as we head toward the evening. the timing of the next batches of showers, i think the best bet will come in during the heating of the day. this will be afternoon through 5:00. maybe a few more lingering showers for your monday morning commute. by tuesday, finally, thing will start to dry out and warm toward the middle part of the week. rainfall, not too much. a tents of an inch or a quarter inch as we get through the end of the weekend. tonight the lows will stay pretty mild. low 50s outside. scattered showers. obviously less rainy than the weather we had to start the day. tomorrow's temperatures, still running quite cooler than average. that's the other part of the story. we should be in the 70s and 80s. not going to get there by tend of the weekend. upper 60s around san jose. 63 for san francisco. with scattered showers and very possibly an isolated thundershower. i think the best bet will be in

eastern solano and contra costa counties. showers linger into monday. then finally, wednesday and thursday we'll warm up. 70s in the forecast for the middle part of the week. >> any break in the weather? we're heading to the greek festival. what's a good time? >> off and on showers. the morning doesn't look that bad but probably mid afternoon, we'll see a few of those showers firing up.

a slightly soggy with you still exciting grand opening today. today is natural trails day. to celebrate, the san francisco recreation and parks department introduced interior green belt park. the rpd also reopened a historic trail that links the park to mount sutro. it had been closed for 50 years. now there are 72 more acres of open space for the public to use. >> this is a unique opportunity here to reconnect the neighborhoods to this wonderful urban open space.
