on our broadcast tonight, a deep weakness. new york senator anthony weiner admits sending and saying inappropriate things on his computer. he has apologized. he says he's going back to work. the wildfire burning up territory in arizona tonight while firefighters attack it with everything they've got. tonight, people are getting out of the way. surging water, this time, the missouri river threatening seven states with flooding as desperate towns shore up weakening levees. big reports in the fight against two forms of cancer. plus, what an executive of a nationwide restaurant chain saw on this broadcast and how it's "making a difference." captions paid for by nbc-universal television good evening. the age of oversharing has claimed another victim, a man who wanted badly to some day go from congressman anthony weiner to perhaps mayor anthony weiner of the city of new york. he's a young, ambitious, and volatile democrat in the house of representatives. and that's all people knew about him until a lewd picture of him surfaces from his own twitter account. that all started this days ago. he denied it was him at first, then left it vague. then today in a rather humiliating and dark press conference. just the latest self immolation. he copped to years of improper computer contacts with women other than his wife. though he said he never met with any of them, he asks for

forgiveness from all and plans to someday tay in the white hou. rrtd not just embarrassing. democratic leader nancy pelosi is urging the ethics committee to look into whether he broke rules or wlaus. he said he did not. wiping back tears, an emotional anthony weiner admits he lied. >> i made a terrible mistake and i hurt the people i care about the most. >> reporter: the new york democrat tried to unwind days of controversy. >> i exchanged messages and clip photo features with about six women over the years. >> reporter: sources say he used pictures over facebook and twitter. in one, he appeared shiftle eed. he said he never met the women, but focused on their guilt.

spoke, the podium was taken over by the man who outed the story. he said he welcomes and will co cooperate with a investigation from the house committee. and he offered another apology to his wife, children, and chief of staff. thanks. now to return to a situation in the southwest tonight. a big chunk of the state of arizona is burning out of control. more than 300 square miles already burned. that's the sooiz of new york city. it's a fire so large nasa photos clearly show the smoke plumes visible on the ground, and haze is reported as far away as the state of iowa. george lewis reports on the fire staging area in eager, arizona. >> reporter: the largest fire in

arizona known as the wallow fire, has been burning for a week today with zero containment. >> that's because it's in rugged terrain with lots of brush and fuel to enhance it. >> we're creating a perfect storm of dry fuels, intense weather, and that's what is making this difficult to detain. >> reporter: a dozen water dropping helicopters s were grounded today because of strong winds. >> as law enforcement agencies ordered residents to evacuate from many of those communities. >> i'm going to cry. >> reporter: in greer, where people were getting ready to leave, mark peterson has 5,000 head of sheep to shear. if the wind changes, he and his sheep will have to get out of here in a hurry.

>> if we have to vacate, we have to walk them back out to the northeast. that's kind of what our plan is right now. >> reporter: in case anybody needed reminding, dick bruno, owner of the snowy mountain inn, put up a red flag to warn people of a high-fire incident even though they hope the folks in the community will be spared. >> we're hoping it might miss up, but it's doing some backburning. >> as the wind keeps whipping up the flame, there's not much it can do to keep the wallow sapphire from spreading written. >> and tonight, those close to greer were ordered to evacuate along with the residents of another small community. the firefighters in this camp are going to have their work cut out for them this week. >> george lewis, and you heard the fire alarms in arizona. thanks. in the upper blain states

tonight, it's the opposite problem, water and too much of it. six channels along the missouri river are full and there are more to come with records snowpack melting. now they're releasing some of the water in seven different states. miguel almaguer is at a crucial dam in minnesota. that's an incredible sight behind you. >> reporter: it certainly is. the massive flow behind me is the reason the mississippi could flood. some 700,000 gallons are pouring out behind me every second. there's too much to hold back, and although the rainbow bp hiepd me is beautiful, it's an eyesore of danger down the river. >> surging and fast, the missouri river is threatening to top levees and break banks. it's forced the power plant to

declare a low-level maersh. meanwhile, in the dakotas, 20,000 people have been asked to evacuate. steve has lived long the river for 33 years. >> it's hard to take at my age. i'm 78, and i can't fly to arizona. >> in missouri and iowa, it was threatening to flood thousands of homes and had driven up thousands on higher ground. >> trying to not get grouchy and it's not been fun. >> reporter: with 4,000 members of the national guard like across from the missouri river, manpower and air support striking levees where they're week. they're holding back the river, a monumental task. the missouri is nearly 2400 miles long. seven states are in the path of the flood emergency. the river flow, controlled by six dams. today's record will be followed

by yet another tomorrow. former minnesota governor mike graham could lose his home. he blamed the army corps of engineers for waiting. >> i we know this right now that it shouldn't happen. i don't want to see it happen again. >> reporter: the corps said there was no one to forget, they relieved much water, of little comfort to the evacuees who will be gone for at least a month. tonight, missouri river is on the move and on the rye. >> after the nuclear plant in nebraska, authorities say there have been no nuclear leaks and they insist they stay back here about the water damming tomorrow, and 12 of the waters dams. the question tonight, brian, will the levees hold. >> >> such violent water, such a beautiful rainbow behind you. thanks. we turn overseas in iraq today. we haven't had news like this in

a while. five americans were killed in a rocket attack in baghdad. the deadliest attack since '09, and families got the worst possible news. and listen to what president obama had to say today on the war in afghanistan in an interview with first television. as dpar as we can tell, he hasn't gone this far before. it's about getting americans out of afghanistan and bringing them home. >> by us killing osama bin laden, getting al qaeda back on its heels, stabilizing much of the country and taliban can't take it over, now it's time -- we have accomplished a big chunk of our mission, and it's time for the afghans to take more of the responsibility. president obama on the day, oof which brings us to our chief foreign correspondent, richard engle. we have him in the studio with us for a brief time. we last saw you in the region saturday now.

drove americans out. that's going to be a power battle. as they learn the missiles that like them so much, they're going to try to get them to leave the f fussal. >> while you're on home leave, we'll borrow you from time to time for this. turning to politics, rick santorum entered the crowded race to the preflsh nomination today. he leveled some harsh attacks on president obama on economic and social issues. sarah palin is defending her own version of the story of the famous ride of paul revere after least week giving a version to reporters that differs with history. this weekend, she insisted she got it right. >> part of the ride was to warn the british we were already there. you're not going to take american arms. you're not going to beat us. our home is well armed.

costello. >> what about your skin? >> reporter: after 30 years of little progress in the fight against one of the deadliest forms of cancer, there was more good news about two drug therapies, and rick may represent a huge breakthrough. he has reclaimed his life as a surfer, husband, father, and commercial pilot. three years ago, as melanoma aggressively spread through his body, he was put on a trial drug called yervoy that simulated the immune system to attack the cancer. >> i felt physically it shrinking, and i saw one disapeefr so fast. >> reporter: he's now cancer free and may be an except. a study reports 47% of patients using yervoy ulived for at leas a year compared to 23% in the control group. now the researchers will test a combination of yervoy on a
