>> reporter: good morning, i'm christie smith, live in hayward where the search for a missing nursing student has taken a grim turn for the worse. it's now a homicide negs. the outpouring of support for two firefighters killed in the city. what the city is doing today to honor the men. >> reporter: it's not the gorgeous views from treasure island they are against. good morning, i'm marla tellez. why some environmental groups oppose the idea to redevelop the island and what they are doing about it today. a live look at the golden gate bridge. we'll check the morning commute for you. it's tuesday, june 7th. this is today in the bay.

that's great, but it's going to change. we'll track it. back to you. >> thank you. we have an update. the search for a missing haywards student takes a turn for the worse. police think michelle is dead, killed from taking a break from hospital rounds. christie smith is live. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. this is certainly not the news anyone wanted to hear. hayward police coming out and saying they believe the missing nursing student was likely killed in the kaiser permanente parking garage where she was last seen. they believe this was very likely someone who intentionally went after the nursing student, that was not a stranger jumping out of a bush. police conducted a number of

searches in the east bay hills. while they aren't releasing details, based on evidence collected from the garage, they believe she was killed. >> during the course of the discussions, during the course of questioning a number of people, we have had persons of interest come up in this case. whether or not we focused on one individual person of interest or not, i can't say at this time. >> reporter: she vanished may 27th. she told colleagues she was going on break to get some items from her car. when she failed to return, they got worried and called police. her family has been critical of the hayward police department and the pace of the investigation. they thought it was too slow and wanted the fbi to take the lead. police are not taking that personally. we are expecting to hear from her family today. meantime, they say they are not giving up hope and the reward for information about what

really happened to her stands at $65,000. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you. it is 5:03 now. it may be days before we find out the identity of a woman found in a garbage bag. a homeowner came home from the store and noticed the bag next to pushes. investigators are trying to find out why her body was dumped here. without identity, it's difficult to put pieces together. the gruesome discovery has neighbors rattled. >> i don't know what to think of it. i think someone from out of the area put it there. must have. >> the coroner will use her dental records, dna and fingerprints to help make an identification. the man accused of beating bryan stow may have proof he is

innocent. attorneys say the lapd has surveillance video of him shot the day after the attack. he has a full head of hair proving he could not have beaten stow. the two san francisco firefighters who died tragically in the line of duty will be honored today. ciot tower will be lit red to memorialize them. the tribute will remind people how much the men and women of the san francisco fire department sacrificed and put their lives on the line for the city every single day. mayor ed lee will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the giants game as they take on the washington nationals at at&t

park. it starts at 7:15. you can catch it on comcast sports net bay area. firefighters are not alone dealing with this difficult time. there's a memorial for them at station 26 where they work. the family spent yesterday at the firehouse with his friends and co-workers. his sister says he took her on a dream trip to europe for her 50th birthday. in the meantime, friends of lieutenant perez spent the last few years taking care of his mother. there's another memorial on berkeley way. crime tape is still up there. patty is sharing pictures she took of the incident. she says neighbors are heart broken. >> air of heaviness throughout the neighborhood.

we feel so bad for our neighbors and feel so sorry for the firefighters that died. thousands of people are expects to attend the funeral. today, the san francisco board of supervisors will consider an appeal to halt plans for treasure island. marla tellez is live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the views from treasure island are tough to beat. take a look for yourself here. we have the bay bridge over my shoulder and of course, a spectacular skyline of san francisco. it's one of the benefits of living here. right now, it's more of a commuter island. the city of san francisco wants it to become literally more of a treasure island where people can live more comfortably and not drive to san francisco or oakland for a shopping day. right now, approximately 3,000 people live here.

the plan boosts the population to 19,000. it calls for up to 8,000 residential units. commercial space, 100,000 squar feet of office space, new roads, library and school. a ferry terminal. the $1.5 billion project would turn this island into an urban village. they narrowly approved the environmental impact. the board will consider an appeal put together by a pon t opponents. they did not consider the projects impact on the bay bridge and the added congestion it would bring. the vulnerability of flooding from a tsunami or earthquake and the housing market on the island. the board will hear the appeal

tonight at city hall at a 5:00 meeting. even if the appeal is denied and it moves forward, it's not going to be transformed overnight. it calls for a 20 year redevelopment plan. >> wow, we'll be old. not you, my dear. >> reporter: speak for yourself. >> your time is up. no, just kidding. it's 5:09 now. they have a difficult decision in half-moon bay. they will cut city staffing in half. they would lose 19 employees by outsourcing the police and recreation services. the move is expected to save $500,000. all right. let's see if it's a good day for recreation outside.

friday's horrible job numbers that saw only 54,000 jobs created in may. we are going to get data on consumer credit. a speech by ben bernanke, he's expected to talk about the economic slowdown. they want to hear what the fed's take is on that and what to do about it. the dow is going to start just above 12,000. we closed at 12,089 yesterday. nasdaq at 2700 after losing 30 points. prices at the pump are one bit of good news. they are inching lower. the national average fell to $3.78 a gallon. i checked aaa this morning and it's down to $3.76. it's the lowest we have seen since early april. gas prices are down 20 cents in the last four weeks but still $1

higher than a year ago. disney is planning to cut 250 employees from the movie studios. it's just under 5% of the work force. most of them from the home video unit. dvd sales have been falling with the popularity of downloads. disney is trying to cut costs. one word, sony play station debut at e-3, sony apologized, once again, for the hacking on their system. 90% of folks have come back on. 10% are still nervous. >> they need to gain people's trust. thank you. security caught this tornado. take a look at this. a car wash camera captured it all when the ef-3 twister tore through massachusetts last week.

low pressure. this is the area that brought all the rain over the weekend. it's going to push to the north like yesterday as high pressure moves in. it's pulling in the marine layer. we are expecting mostly cloudy conditions to start you out. as you can see, clear as a bell from the east bay across the peninsula. we'll watch out for that and maybe fog formation for the next couple hours. 57 degrees in san jose. 56 in gilroy. we are headed to the 70s. 74 in livermore. 75 in santa rosa and 65 in san francisco. if you have tickets to at&t park, giants take on the nationals tonight at 7:15. weather is looking phenomenal. if you don't have tickets to a giants game and you want to know when the weather is going to be the best, thursday is your day. it's going to be gorgeous around here. 61 degrees at 7:15. a little breezy at the park. take a look at thursday. 80 degrees. that's the warmest day of the

>> thank you. i'm a realist. it's 5:24. welcome to the bay area. this morning, a massive wildfire continues to burn through arizona forcing people to leave their homes. they are having a tough go at it. a wildfire forced the evacuation of a third resort town. the fire is burning out of control for weeks. over 300 square miles has been burned. officials say windy conditions and dry lightning are likely to make things worse. more than 2,000 firefighters as far away as new york are trying to contain the fire to do what they can to help. 5:25 now. silicon valley is one of the bright spots. scott budman has a look. >> good morning. i could talk about how the global economic slowdown sent the s&p 500 to the lowest level

since march but there's a silver lining. it comes from a cloud in silicon valley. let's go to san francisco where apple ceo steve jobs made a second appearance since taking a medical leave to kick off the developer conference 2011. taking center stage, i-cloud. this is apples solution to having you sync your mobile devices to your pc and each one individually when you want to update your music collection. two things stick out. for one thing, you don't have to be on the pc anymore. it's happening wi-fi. this is jobs take on the post pc world where everything is mobile. your phone is a computer. your tablet is a computer. the second thing, if you sync something from the cloud, each song you bring down, each photo

you bring down will be brought down to all your mobile devices simultaneously. if you bookmark an ebook on one device, you can pick up the book in the exact same place you bookmarked it on any mobile device. the idea being, you don't need to be chained to the pc. it operates in the cloud. apple is sinking billions of dollars on this. they are taking on established companies like google and salesforce.com. it will be interesting to see if apple can make the cloud computing world easier to use. anyway, worldwide developer conference takes place all week. you can check it out in san francisco. back to you. >> thank you very much, scott. amazing how far we have come in a short about of time.

street. it started early today. it is tuesday. the maze is holding up nicely. 880 past the coliseum. bob is going to bring the update of what's going on. back to you. >> it's 5:31 now. the search for a missing hayward student took a turn for the worst for her family. police think michelle lei is dead, killed while taking a break from hospital rounds. forensic evidence shows that she died in the parking garage at the medical center. the 26-year-old vanished on may 27th. she told colleagues she was going to her car to get items but never returned. evidence collected also convinced them that lei was killed. this morning people in oakland are coming together after a very violent weekend. up to 400 people are expected to march in the peace walk.

bridge traffic. san francisco's city leaders go forward with a massive plan to develop treasure island. marla tellez is live on treasure island with a great view and update for us. good morning. >> good morning. i have a true story for you. when i was moving to san francisco, i lived here on treasure island to live. one of the draws was the views. it's impossible to beat them. you have the bay bridge here, the city skyline, the golden gate on the right, alcatraz, angel island. you can see it all here. when it comes to convenience, not so much. most of the people who live here have to drive to oakland or san francisco to take care offer rands. they want to take care of that and transform the island into an urban village. now, approximately 3,000 people live here.

the redevelopment plan boosts to 19,000. it calls up to 8,000 residential units. shopping districts, more shopping space, roads, library, a school, a ferry terminal. urban village. this whole project is a $1.5 billion project. the san francisco planning commission narrowly approved the reports earlier this year. they voted in favor of the plan. tonight, they will consider an appeal put together by opponents that include the golden gate audubon society. the review did not consider the projects impact on the bay bridge and the added traffic it would bring. the vulnerability of a tsunami or earthquake and the housing market currently on the island

here. the board is going to hear the appeal at 5:00. if the plan is approved, it's not like it will be transformed overnight. it calls for a 20-year redevelopment plan. >> it's a beautiful place with a beautiful view. nice. >> it's 5:37 now. i think it's going to be nice around the bay area. we are hitting a trend where we are going to see the temperatures rise. >> the overnight lows back in the 50s. when you wake up and walk out the front door, it's easier to get moving. we are expecting the beautiful view that marla showed. watch out for that. none is forming, yet. typically, as we head through 6:30 and 7:30, we watch it roll in. this week, temps are going to keep climbing in through friday. i think thursday and friday look like beautiful days. if you need to get outside, you have the luxury to do so. thursday afternoon looks good.

5:42 right now. first the addiment denial and a tearful apology. he said his twitter account was attacked. now he admits to sending a lewd photo of himself to a college student. tracie potts is here to tell us whether congressman anthony weiner can keep his job. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. can a married congressman who lied about his twitter account being hacked, sent a lewd photo to a sledge student but posted for everyone to see. can he keep his job in there are calls by top democrats for an ethics investigation. he says he will cooperate, but won't step down because he doesn't believe he's broken

ethical rules on capitol hill. he wants voters to decide whether or not he should stay in washington. it was the denials that he said his twitter account was hacked and he hired a lawyer. turns out they were all lies. he panicked and made up the stories. he also says he's had more inappropriate conversations with women on twitter, facebook, e-mail, by phone. over the years, all of this likely to come out in an investigation. we'll find out soon, if and when it will happen. >> why he even did it in the first place. thank you very much. it's 5:44 right now. the two teens accused of killing a 3-month-old boy, 3 months old, they are now in police custody. he was killed during what police believe was a case of mistaken identity. police say the two teenagers who shot him were retaliating for a

gang beating and didn't realize they had the wrong target. the mother tried to protect the baby boy with her body, but one of the bullets made it through. >> they destroyed my family. they killed my baby. they killed part of my soul, too. >> simply tragic. this is a sketch of the 17-year-old. he is charged with murder. his 16-year-old accomplice faces weapons charges. horrible, horrible crime. a peninsula could pay more for sewer service. the san mateo board of supervisors will consider a hike to pay for leaking pipes. people say they will agree to the hike if there's a plan to bring down rates in the long term. the price of gas is on the decline. california's average price for a gallon of gasoline dropped below
