ago. maybe the slowdown already started. we'll watch it. we haven't seen anything major in the area. 70 is a decent speed. oakland shows construction. we have a couple lanes at the coliseum dropped. there are the flashing lights. looks like they are moving the cones. >> thank you, mike. we have an update of a rescue where an emergency crew is trying to find if a car went into the water. christie smith is live in oakland with more on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we are where the oakland fire department and coast guard each have boats in the water looking for a car that may have gone under. they put a dark buoy out there. they marked a spot where they located something hard in the water. they have long poles and they are poking them down to the

bottom and believe they may have hit something. a couple driving by here spotted what they saw was the rear end of a car, possibly a honda floating in the water with the dome light on. they called 911, whipped their car around and what they thought was a submerged car was gone. there are no signs of an accident like skid marks or broken railings. just a boat ramp as a possible way in. >> yeah, there is a launching ramp here for boats. given, you know, there's no outward signs of an accident. if there is a vehicle, that's how the car wound up in the canal, through the boat launch area. >> reporter: police say there is a homeless camp nearby on interstate 880.

they talked to folks there about whether they saw anything unusual. they don't know if the car is in the water. what's happening is the two boats and their crews are poking their sticks down there on what they hit. they are waiting for a dive team to get here and physically go in the water. that should happen by 6:00 this morning. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> it will be interesting to see if they found anything. san francisco's police chief are defending the actions of two officers. greg sir says the officers were in danger of losing their lives and being seriously injured on tuesday. the man killed was the genx bandit. the officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, pending investigation. dozens of stabbings and

fights have neighbors living in fear. they say it's getting worse near blossom hill road. she's seen bottles thrown and brawls near her home. she would like to see police officers walk the neighborhood instead of patrolling in their cars. she says she is terrified her kids could become victims. >> i don't feel comfortable. they can't ride a bike because they are afraid they will take the bike. >> the police reassured the mainly hispanic audience they are not immigration agents. they want neighbors to overcome their fears of deportation and retaliation and call police if they see a crime being committed. san francisco police officer will be in court today to face bribery charges. marla tellez has more on that. >> certainly never a good thing to end up on the wrong side of the law. good morning, laura.

he's a former san francisco police officer. prosecutors say paul allegedly received bribes from taxi driver applicants. he took $100 over a two-year period. the 36-year veteran was in charge of grading written exams. he would give passing tests. they were arrested last november. in oakland, three suspects will stand trial for home invasion robberies. a superior court judge ruled yesterday there was sufficient evidence to try the group for robbing 25 homes. two suspects, 24 and 21-year-old man and woman are from the bay area. the other is a 25-year-old man from stockton. they have been charged on 79 felony counts including 49 home

invasion robbery accounts. it took place over an eight month period in oakland. they believe the suspects charged asian immigrants. the 17-year-old boy accused of shooting a family and killing a 3-month-old baby will be tried as an adult. he made his first court appearance yesterday. he did not enter a plea. the parents were in the courtroom. he and another person shot at the family after mistaking them for gang members who beat them up in may. he'll be back in court on the 15th to enter a plea. at 5:06, that's the latest from here. >> thank you, marla. muni drivers voted down a contract agreement. don't worry, there won't be a strike.

an arbitrator will step in. whatever contract they decide, both sides have to live with it. it will go into effect july 1st. the next time you dial 911 in the south bay, you will see a different ambulance drive up to your home. a company called rural metro takes over beginning july 1st. not everyone is happy about that change. damian trujillo is live at the headquarters this morning where ambulances are being prepared for the first day on the road. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. here they are. there are 55 of these blue and gold ambulances here in the south bay in the fleet of rural metro. this is what they look like. they are bigger than the old ones. managers say they are as state of the art as they come. they will operate in the south bay under the seal of santa clara county. they take over the contract for amr.

they are equipped with technology to receive the patient's chart, vital signs and crucial medication before the patient arrived at the hospital. the gurneys are new and state of the art. the wheels lower remotely making it easier on the emt and the patient. response time will remain the same as mandated by the county. >> this is a very tightly regulated contract. it's performance based meaning we have to meet specific response time requirements. >> reporter: the faces inside the ambulances will remain the same as well. rural metro hired most of the emt's that were working for amr. there's displeasure over pay. we received e-mails in the news room from the emts about the pay. they agreed to pay the same, if not better wages than amr.

metro says they are doing just that. we are live in san jose, i'm damian trujillo, today in the bay. >> interesting. thank you very much. what about the forecast? 5:08 right now. warmest day of the year so far. it will be interesting to see. temperatures are creeping up gradually. but, rumor is we should be hitting the 80s soon. >> they are not the warmest of the year. oh, no. oh, no. in february -- it's so bizarre. february, super bowl time, typically when we have rain and cold we got close to 90 degrees. today, the warmest cities will break into the low 80s. high pressure is at the strongest. it's at the peak energy for the bay area, closest to where we are going to see it for the rest of the week and the weekend. it's going to drift off to the east. today, the best, warmest weather. we are going to start out cloudy, though. it looks more and more promising every time i check.

the marine layer is at 2,000 feet. i think we'll have a cloudy start until 10:30, maybe until 11:00 like yesterday. we are starting out mild this morning. almost 60 in sunnyvale. 48 in navato. we are headed to the mid-70s. 80 in fairfield. i'll let you know how much longer the warm, dry weather will last. we'll take you to the maze. you will be on time. there's nothing to slow you down for the most part. the speeds approaching the bay bridge, the giants game is a 7:15 game against cincinnati. right now, the bottom of the screen, the construction is picking up at the fruit vail ramp. the last of the flashing lights north of 66 looks like they are going to be moving as well.

welcome back, everyone. shuttle buses could get a discount when traveling across the golden gate bridge. the agency in charge of the bridge is looking for a proposal to charge shuttles $7.50 if it

the construction cleared out. southbound side down toward san mateo bridge is smooth. the golden gate bridge shows a nice drive as well. we don't see anything beyond the towers. there are high clouds throughout the area. we were on fog watch. we'll let you know if there are problems. back to you. >> thank you very much. authorities in northern arizona say someone intentionally set several fires yesterday. 50 homes near flagstaff had to be evacuated. a combination of nine fires burned 100 acres. there's no word on a motive for starting the fires. no one was hurt or injured. it's tough to hear that news after they are trying to battle the eastern battle fire. it continues across arizona burning more than 600 square miles. it is threatening transmission lines to hundreds of thousands of people as far east as texas.

the 600 square mile blaze is expected to reach tomorrow. since the fire started at the end of may, ten structures burned more than 300 are threatened. the fire remains zero percent containment. the thick smoke is shrouding the area. looks like amber, i understand. we are waiting on the ban of selling violent video games to kids. california is one of a number of states that want to restrict what video games children can buy. an appeals court struck down that. they said teens and kids have freedom of speech rights. the makers of angry birds trying to give you a taste of breakfast. scott budman explains.

change. damian trujillo is live in san jose with the newer emergency vehicles headed out. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the new ambulances hit the streets of the south bay beginning on july 1. you can see they are much bigger than the old ambulances from amr out there hitting the streets. rural metro is the name of the company. they took over the contract in the south bay. these will be the ambulances that will respond to your home in the south bay, if you dial 911. there are 55 ambulances in the south bay fleet. they all have the state of the art technology. the gurneys are electronic making the call easier on the technicians and patients. they promise the same responsz time. the paramedics have several tools including a smartphone

that allows them to receive realtime patient information. >> the cardiac specialists, e.r. physicians can activate their staff in the labs prior to our arrival. as soon as the patient rolls through the door, they have the intervention provided to them. >> reporter: the paramedics will know their routes well. they hired most of the paramedics who worked for amr in the south bay. nbc bay area received a couple e-mails from paramedics saying they are not happy with the pay. they said they agreed to pay the same, if not better ages than amr. we are live in san jose. i'm damian trujillo, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. it is 5:33 right now. this morning an unexpected phone

call causing outrage in oakland. oscar grant's family got word -- he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to two years for shooting and killing oscar grant. grant's family is stunned he is getting out of jail seven months after the sentencing. >> this was staged, planned, acted out. it's brought this type of conclusion. this is where we at right now. a state of disappointment. >> he was not armed when he was shot. it's 5:34 right now. today, family and friends of michelle le are clinging to hope she will be found alive. at 7:30 tonight, loved ones will

gather or a candle light vigil. the family believes she could still be alive even though the police are assured she was killed. there is a $65,000 reward in the case. images of a sexual assault suspect caught by a cell phone camera. marla is in the news room with more on that. >> she seems so calm. we are going to let you listen for yourself in a second here. the victim took video of her attacker as he left her oakland home. take a listen. police say the man broke into the home tuesday morning, sexually assaulted the woman, then stole some electronics. the 28-year-old woman was hurt, but expected to recover.

safety of drug distribution at some pharmacies. pharmacies efforts were flawed. tracie potts is live in washington with how to protect yourself and your loved ones. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. good morning, everyone. in california, 312 million prescriptions are filled every year. how do you know they are safe? the university of arizona found there might be questions about that. they tested 64 pharmacies and found more than a quarter of the time, only a quarter of the time were pharmacies able to make sure customers knew about dangerous drug interactions. in other words, some three quarters of pharmacies were not able to detect all the dangerous interactions between the drugs you are getting and the drugs you are taking. why? some had out dated software or turned off the alerts because of the annoying minor alerts. bottom line here, tell your pharmacist all of the medications you are taking to

make sure they are not going to cause a dangerous conflict. laura. >> you have to double check everything before you walk away, too. >> absolutely. almost eight months after the deadly explosion in san bruno, pg&e admitted it sprung a leak a few miles away. they found documents revealing the prior leak. they released the leaking portion of the pipe. the company investigating is not satisfied. it shows the utilities inadequacy in recordkeeping. day care centers could lose their licenses. the kids country program provides child care at elementary schools. state agents received complaints kids left campus and walked home

without staff knowing about it. a spokesperson says none of the kids were hurt. gaming is bringing families together. what parents may not realize is they have a feature that might not be so family friendly. we'll have more on that, i guess, coming up in a bit. kids can hop on the internet through most councils without parental controls. you can switch from tennis to porn. tough watch what your kids are doing. most have controls on their computers. joe says he realized the danger as his son was setting up a new game. you know what, we are going to get to that story later. i got it. we're going to hollywood movie now. 5:46 now. hollywood movie set to shoot in
