on standby to assist in the fire zones, this as 22 homes have been burned. the biggest concern is the mountain retreat of greer. firefighters are setting back fires and trying to construct barriers to save the community. six structures were burned. >> the winds are out of the west. >> reporter: firefighters expect more favorable wind conditions today as heavy gusts that were driving the fire have died down. 16 helicopters have been filling up with water to douse the flames. they are joined by a dc-10 tanker known as the supersoaker. 11,000 people in arizona have been displaced from their homes. 200 miles of highway are shut down. elsewhere, power lines from the palo verde nuclear plant near phoenix are of concern. those lines run through the fire shown in this nasa photo. if they are damaged, hundreds of thousands of people in texas and new mexico could be subjected to rolling blackouts. the head of the u.s. forest

service says because of years of drought in the west, fires like this one are becoming more common. >> almost every year we have a fire of this significance. definitely different than what we used to see 10, 15 years ago. >> reporter: and he warns the battle to contain the fire may take several more weeks. there was a bit of good news at an evacuation center thursday night. some evacuees were told they might be able to return home as early as tomorrow. that brought a big round of applause. natalie? >> we hope that's the case. george lewis in show low, arizona, thank you. from the fire to the heat in the eastern half of the nation where unseasonably high temperatures are blamed for at least eight deaths so far. parts of detroit lost power thursday as widespread air conditioning usage put a high drain on the power grid. thunderstorms have broken the worst of the heat and may bring relief today. the russian soyuz capsule

another story we have been following this week. anthony weiner's vow to hang onto his job. good morning. >> good morning, matt. we know when politicians get themselves in high profile trouble, friends and colleagues often run for the hills. that's true for newt gingrich and the sex scandal plagued democratic congressman anthony weiner. his team bolted leaving him with a tough issue to explain. >> we have to work together. >> reporter: newt gingrich wants a do-over, to relaunch the campaign he just kicked off last month. >> i'm newt gingrich. i'm announcing my candidacy for president of the united states. >> reporter: the big split came thursday when his campaign manager, longtime spokesman and other top aides decided their views on running a campaign were incompatible. the senior team quit after a string of awkward missteps, like the odd glitter attack. >> stop anti-gay politics.

turned to facebook. i am committed to running the substantive solutions oriented campaign i set out to run this spring. the campaign begins anew sunday in los angeles. in new york, anthony weiner vows to hang onto his job. >> i'm trying to get back to work now and try to make a mem t amends to my family. >> reporter: he says he can rebound after sending racy messages to women online. >> you're not planning to resign? >> i'm not. >> reporter: that is his word today. he comes back to work in washington next week where the pressure will intensify. a number of democrats have come forward urging him to resign. the number three democrat in the house is saying the caucus will act, meaning fellow democrats will make their views known but without any specifics. it is pressure for both newt gingrich and anthony weiner.

matt? >> kelly o'donnell, thank you very much. chuck todd, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> let's start where kelly left off with congressman weiner. he says he's not resigning. if you look at a new poll, a majority of his constituents say he should not resign, that this should not impair his ability to be an effective congressman, but the reality is different, isn't it? when he gets back into congress nobody will want to be in a photo with him and nobody will want to sponsor legislation with him. isn't that true? >> that's right. what's going on now is he's only listening to advisers that tell him he can hold this out. there are other people giving him advice and there are a lot of people exasperated now that he's not looking at this through the lens of anything other than seeing those poll results in his district showing he could actually win re-election or at least survive this for now.

president clinton has been giving him advice. he's now frustrateded, i'm told. by the fact that congressman weiner won't listen to him. all the senior members of the house are exasperated. monday will be ugly. one aide said, he has no idea how bad it is. he'll find out monday. >> now to newt gingrich. this was a significant exodus from his campaign staff on thursday. what's behind the departures? >> it's a reverse intervention. the team was frustrated. we talked about this earlier in the week. the idea, right after you announce your bid for president, the message you send to staff who are going to be working 16, 20-hour days to go on a two-week vacation, to not make fundraising calls, to not do the little things. this was after two false starts of his presidential campaign. we talked about the bad start when he actually launched.

don't forget a month earlier when one aide thought he was announcing and one said, oh, not yet, not yet. this was frustration with calista. he's bruce willis in "the sixth sense." everyone else knows it's over. >> he did get off to a bad start. he had new hampshire but he started over and got the nomination. >> the difference was john mccain fired his staff. john mccain took over, realized, oh, my god, my campaign is bleeding money. these guys are giving me bad advice. this is a case where the staff said, what are you doing? there is no money. you're not doing the basics. they left him. it's a big difference. actually, this is very newt. this is how he does things.

michael, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann. today, alaska officials finally agreed to turn them over. more than 24,000 of sarah palin's e-mails are due to be released here this morning. it's a massive document dump that could offer new clues into what kind of governor sarah palin was and if she runs, what kind of president she could yet become. fresh off her bus tour that attracted a crush of media attention, sarah palin may be facing a storm of a different kind. the release of thousands of e-mails from palin to 50 top aides and officials in alaska. the e-mails cover the first two years as her tenure of governor and continue through 2008, including the first frantic weeks after john mccain plucked her from obscurity as his running meaate. she was a blackberry user, venting about critics, but she

disappeared provide clues? kevin tibbles has the latest from bloomington, indiana. good morning to you. >> matt, police say there is an altercation on that video. while it did not involve the missing girl it involved someone she was with who now says he can't remember it. time is becoming critical but after a week of searching police and volunteers refuse to give up, looking for any sign of fashion student lauren spierer. >> just hoping she'll come home. >> reporter: an anonymous tip led police to nearby lake monroe. >> we'll have the dive team take a look at the area that was described with negative results. >> reporter: police pored over evidence taken from her apartment and are speaking to ten people described as persons of interest. the video shows an altercation about two hours before lauren

went missing. >> all of our information including video and interviews indicates that lauren was not involved in any altercation. >> reporter: but cory rossman, the fellow university student lauren was with, was. >> he basically got his clock cleaned. >> reporter: his attorney says his client was hit hard in the face and now has no memory of what happened that night. >> the injury to his head affected his memory, not only from the time forward but 15, 20 minutes prior to getting hit. >> reporter: following the fight, saltzman says lauren spent time partying with friends before heading home alone at 4:30 in the morning and disappearing. >> he's three, four, maybe five people away from being the last person to see her. >> reporter: lauren's mother and

began arriving in the mail one was intercepted before reaching its intended target. the fbi rushed it to the u.s. army's high security biolab in maryland. now it is revealed in a new book about the anthrax attacks that the letter was turned oven for examination to dr. bruce ivans, the very man the fbi later concluded sent it in the fist place. he intended the attacks to refocus attention on his pet project, the lagging military program to develop a new anthrax vaccine. >> he was angry, frustrated that he couldn't get resources from the federal government he thought were merited to push the research and development of the product. >> reporter: willman calls ivins the mirage man. inside seething with rage for decades of perceiveded slights, noticeably the refusal of a

campus sorority to date him in college. he developed a of lifelong obsession, twice breaking into the houses to steal documents about its ritual, even while working as an army scientist. >> here is an adult in his 30s, 40s, 50s, into his 60s with an obsession with a college sorority. that's bizarre. >> reporter: he writes that ivins struggled with mental illness and told doctors he'd plotted to kill two people shortly before he committed suicide. knowing he was about to be charged. he was asked by a laboratory colleague if he sent the letters. >> he says, in my right mind i wouln't have done it. it scares me what i might have done when i'm not in my right man. that raises the hair on my neck. >> reporter: a lawyer for ivins says the only way to know for certain who sent the letters would have been through trial.

thursday. the mom accused of murdering i caylee had to leave when images of her daughter became too much to bear. kerry, good morning to you. >> reporter: it was a brutally emotional day in the courtroom as the prosecutors showed photos taken in the woods where caylee's remains were found. i even gasped at one of the photos. as for casey, she didn't look at the pictures, but she got so ill she had to leave court early. for those in the court it was hard to look at and even harder to look away as prosecutors showed picture after picture after picture of caylee's remains dumped in the woods a five-minute walk from home. >> duct tape. >> reporter: for two hours, two minutes a crime scene technician and a deputy medical examiner methodically detailed what they found that day in 2008. >> there was another bag which

contained the skull along with scalp hair and tape. >> reporter: casey anthony's lawyers turned the monitor away just as prosecutors showed the most graphic photos. she never once looked at the pictures, including the detailed close-up that showed caylee's skull with duct tape that covered her chin to nose and stretched across her jawbone which they called the mandible. >> the mandible is not attached anymore to the rest of the skull. >> reporter: after prosecutors showed 65 photos, casey told lawyers she could take no more. >> okay, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we are going to recess for the day. there are some events that have occurred that causes us to stop at this time. >> reporter: after the jurors left the courtroom, casey stood up and braced herself on the table. her defense attorney reached out to comfort her as she stood with her head down, catching her

breath for the next 12 seconds. weak and pale. then bailiffs approached. casey paused and then gestured she wanted to leave. weak on her feet, she was escorted from the courtroom. corrections officials say they took her to the jail infirmary for treatment. >> ms. anthony is ill. we are recessing for the day. >> reporter: while it was difficult for casey anthony, legal experts say it's also likely hard for the jurors to stomach. >> what a jury sees with their own eyes will be more powerful than what someone tells them and what the jury saw with duct tape over the nose and mouth of 2-year-old casey anthony will be hard to explain for the defense. >> reporter: earlier in the trial, casey's brother lee was back on the stand. >> she was held like on her wrists. >> reporter: detailing a variation of the story she told investigators, how she said a nanny named zanny along with zanny's sister pinned casey on a

connecticut in 2009. now more than two years later she has a new lease on life thanks to an extraordinary surgery. we'll speak to her daughter in a moment. first, nbc's jeff rossen is in boston this morning with the exclusive story. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, ann. good morning. look, it's a miracle that charla nash survived in the first place. travis the chimp ripped off her face and both of her hands, left her blind, but this morning a new miracle inside this boston hospital behind me. charla nash just got a new face. it's a transplant that's been kept secret until now. inside this boston operating room they are making history. the first ever face and double hand transplant in the u.s. it is a major milestone for charla nash, a loving mother who looked like this until she was attacked by a chimp and left so seriously disfigured she wore a

veil. charla spoke with nbc news just weeks before her life-changing operation. >> my face and hands together. that would be nice. all at once. being able to do everything on my own. >> reporter: it is a risky surgery that took 20 hours and more than a dozen of the country's top doctors. >> transplanting a face and hands together is really unparalleled. just the complexity of it logistically and surgically makes it probably the most challenging thing we can do. >> reporter: charla isn't revealing her new face yet. she's still healing. these photos were taken as the family saw her face for the first time. by the bed, her brother steve and charla's teenage daughter brianna.

it's been a long, difficult road for them all. two years ago charla was visiting her friend who had a pet chimp named travis. without warning the chimp went on the attack. it was as violent as it gets. the chimp took off charla's lips, ears, nose, mouth and hands. travis's owner called 911. >> he's killing my friend. >> who's killing your friend? >> my chimp. my chimpanzee. >> oh, your chimpanzee is killing your friend. >> yes. she's -- >> ripped apart, hurry up. >> reporter: charla's been in treatment ever since and will never see again, permanently blind. she keeps fighting. >> you're kind of slow. >> i'm kind of slow? >> reporter: meredith vieira met with charla last june at brig ham and women's hospital in boston. >> why didn't you give up? >> everybody here -- my daughter. >> reporter: just days after her surgery there were

complications. doctors had to remove her transplanted hands. another obstacle for a woman who's been through so much. >> the thing i hate about waiting is not being home somewhere. but i can wait. i just want to be home, not in a facility. >> reporter: charla is a fighter. even with the complication from the surgery she is not giving up on new hands. doctors say they can try again for a double hand transplant but have to wait at least six months for her to heal. one other note about the face transplant, for charla nash, this isn't just about cosmetics. for the first time since the attack she can smell again, eat solid food again. again, things we do every day b but she has not been able to do since the attack. doctors say it's hard the to say

part of her. >> i know, doctor, the surgery took, as i understand it, 20 hours, 14 surgeons working simultaneously at multiple sites. i understand that we have animation now from your hospital that gives us an idea of how this happened. can you explain how the transplant actually works? >> yes. we took tissues from the donor that included the skin, underlying muscle of the face and also the nerves that power it and provide sensation in the upper palate. the whole thing was put on charla and recreateded. >> this is the first time there was a transplant for the face and hands in the united states. so your mom is making history. >> that's correct. >> can you tell us, does she look anything like she used to look? do you have a sense about that? >> it was a little swollen so it's hard to tell.

symptoms on the internet? >> i think patients should inform themselves but they should talk to their doctor before they create anxiety for themselves and work themselves up. >> let's talk about our top five don't do this. it's really to let patients know don't harass your doctor. they may actually not be best for you. don't routinely prescribe antibiotics. this has to be the big one. people want antibiotics. they think, that will make me feel better. >> true. in this list recommended to doctors it was specifically for sinus infections. they consume so much of health care costs, $5.8 billion a year. patients need to realize the majority of the time they are from viral rather than bacterial infections. >> so antibiotics won't work. >> that's correct. >> what's the harm in prescribing them? >> it can create resistance. three criteria are laid out for doctors to follow in order to

prescribe antibiotics. pus-like discharge from the nose, pain in the teeth and symptoms for more than seven days. if you don't meet the criteria you can wait to see your doctor. >> next on the list, doctors shouldn't image lower back pain early on. >> that's correct. the fifth most common cause for patients seeing doctors. you don't need imaging studies within six weeks because it doesn't change the outcome. the only criteria to be used by physicians is if you have progressive neurologic symptoms like weakness or anymoreness of the -- numbness of the legs or you suspect an underlying condition. >> it's wasteful. to get an imaging when you don't need it drives up costs. >> mris are expensive. >> and don't perform pap smears for women under 21. >> this was a hot topic with

readers. you don't need one before 21. it doesn't change the outcome. if you have an abnormal pap smear under 21, the large majority of the time it resolves on its own. it's just going to cause unnecessary anxiety for the patient and tremendous costs. >> is there any exception to the rule? >> not really, no. the american college of obstetrics and gynecology follows the guidelines as well. >> is it because cervical cancer is so slow-moving you don't need a pap smear before 21 or just that the dysplasia tends to work itself out? >> it tends to work itself out. >> the last has to do with cardiac tests. heart disease is the leading cause of death but you say doctors shouldn't order ekgs for low risk patients. why do it if they are low risk? >> a lot of times patients come for the annual physical and they ask for it. they need to realize it won't change outcome in the long term. we mean men under 50, women

an oversized lot with mature trees around it. it has an open floor plan throughout the house. kind of a surprise when you walk in. it has laminate floors throughout. that's the only part of the house i don't like. but the living room has a di distressed brick wood fireplace. the dining area has a door to the back deck. there is a formal dining room with brown chairs that look like they have already been packed to go. i don't get why those people put that on there. >> why don't you like laminate? >> it doesn't look real. it's maintenance free and feels fine, but you don't feel like you have a home that will love you back when you walk on it. but people keep putting it in. backyard with a deck that backs into a rolling lawn. you can't see from this shot but you have beautiful missouri river valley beyond the trees. there's a better shot. absolutely no fences. how many times do you get into a community and there are no fences? i like this town.

forest. no neighbors on the back side. the living room is large. it definitely needs new carpeting, new slip covers but look at the space. focus on the walls. you will see how much livable space you have in the house. the kitchen is small to a degree but just needs a new refrigerator and stove and it would be close to perfect. the master bedroom, i think, is the best part of the house. >> wow. >> so unusual. it takes up the entire top floor. i love the pyramid ceilings, skylights and its own patio outside the door. there is a big wrap around deck that looks like it was made for a forest ranger. there is a hot tub at the end. so you have a private hot tub overlooking the valley. >> finally, music city, nashville, tennessee. tr three bedrooms. >> it's on one and a half acres of land. feels secluded but it's five miles from downtown. the house on the outside looks conservative like a typical ranch house. wait until you see the inside.

in the end, you want comfort. you don't want to operate up here. it's a slippery slope from being comfortable to really having nothing new to talk about and the relationship isn't growing or expanding. >> gail, is it really boredom? do you think there is something more to the root of of the problem? >> boredom is a word that people use to mean a lot of things. sometimes they feel lonely actually or alone which you can feel in a relationship if you are not connecting. often it's depression. in this survey women complained more of boredom than men. i think first of all, women suffer depression 2 to 1 for men. so just generally speaking. but i also think women want the emotional content there in the relationship or they feel disconnected and bored, more so than men which is why. >> the other thing the research showed, the surveyvealed a lot of people were board at work and had been bored in prior relationships.

cook longer. >> do you move it around. >> it's good if you let it stick for a second to get brown. then you move it around and come back and stir it a little bit. it looks like that when you're done. >> not this. >> you dumped in a whole cup of salt. >> he did that. i did the other. >> it was there. >> i was being helpful. >> try that. you're going to die. >> we like to serve it as my restaurant in oakland. we bake this in a big wood burning oven and serve it with an egg. so we have this here. it makes a nice light lunch, dinner or brunch. what makes it great, a scoop of whole milk yogurt. >> come in the back and show us this beautiful rib item. >> this is made with short ribs. what's easy they are already cooked and tender and delicious. leave it in the pan, you can cook it ahead and let it sit
