[ giggles ] [ sea gull squawking ] the stromg -- strongest feeling i had after hearing it happened, i wanted to be in that house with my brother. and i say that with all apologies to my four daughters. some people probably can't understand that. and others may, but that's how i felt. >> brothers and friends remember two san francisco firefighters that died in the line of duty and came from as far away as canada to pay final respects and say good-bye at saint mary's cathedral today.

good evening, i am diane dwyer. thanks for joining us for the 4:00 edition of nbc bay area news. >> two fallen heroes were remembered today. >> it was an emotional ceremony where thousands of people filled the church. >> we have a live look from the helicopter above the procession which should be leaving -- we don't have that now. there is a procession leaving the cathedral headed to holy cross cemetery in colma. >> officers are here while scores attended the services. we want to begin with tracy grant. >> reporter: diane, this fire station is one of several staffed all day long with firefighters from out of town.

now, these firefighters showed up at 6:00 this morning, and they say that they are prepared to stay here as long as the san francisco fire department needs them. they may not be that familiar with san francisco neighborhoods and winding streets, but these firefighters say no matter where they are, the job remains the same. >> you're most familiar with your home area, but logistically, we provide enough maps and communication, we can get around pretty well. >> reporter: crews from many other jurisdictions across the state worked out of fire stations in san francisco today. this is the reason why they were needed. san francisco's fire department is mourning the loss of two of its long time firefighters killed in a blaze last week. the presence of these out of town fire crews allowed grieving members to attend funeral services today and say their final goodbyes.

>> it is tragic, you know. we all know it is a chance and a situation that could happen to any one of us, so it really hits home, and you know, the best thing we can do is just support the brothers and sisters that need our help and be there for the family. >> many think of california's mutual aid system as something emergency responders use to help battle wildfires or natural disasters. these firefighters say today the mutual aid system allowed them to do something just as important. >> anyone that has some nexus or connection wants to do something, so this is actually a way for us to do something, and it probably helped satisfy a lot of my colleagues and co-workers' needs to do the same thing. >> reporter: now, unfortunately many of the 150 firefighters who filled in today here in san francisco have had to deal with the feelings of loss that come with losing a fellow firefighter in the line of duty.

that's why some of them told us today they are willing to travel hundreds if not thousands of miles to help another fire department in need. live in san francisco, tracy grant, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, tracy. let's check in with kimberly perry with a closer look at the ceremony. >> reporter: diane, the service just ended. we are on the west side of saint mary's cathedral. you can see for yourself, there are thousands of people that walked out of the church, thousands that paid respect to two men that made the ultimate sacrifice for the job they loved. the two are laid to rest after an emotional service at saint mary's cathedral. an emotional outpouring of love and respect for two fallen san francisco firefighters. thousands of people, mostly firefighters from across the country and even some from canada and mexico packed saint mary's cathedral for the double funeral. the flag-draped caskets were on fire trucks assigned to station

26, their engine company. vincent perez and anthony val air i don't see were caught in a flashover last week. >> without a doubt, the greatest tribute we can make to the fallen heros is rededicating ourselves as san francisco's public servants, committed to being and doing better because of the examples we have been shown. >> reporter: he was remembered as a man of strength. >> first one in the door. he was always the guy to grab the nozzle. if there was a fire, vince was the one to put it out. >> reporter: and tony valerio was a free spirit. >> he was a ponytail hippy that called himself the people's paramedic. he had a big heart, and he loved to help the sick and disabled, the down tread en, yes, even the unwashed. he was like mother teresa with a

siren. >> reporter: while they were quite different in personality, they were both deeply committed to their work and to their families, both by blood and their fire fighting family. >> they gave their all, and they gave it for all of us. >> reporter: the service lasted well over two and a half hours. as you can see now, the caskets are being brought out of the church. they will be taken to the accept try, holy cross cemetery in colma where they will be laid to rest. neither firefighter had children, but are survived by family, including numerous nephews, nieces, and a lot of friends, many who spoke at the funeral. and this just into bay area newsroom. contra costa fire company is

responding to an incident in a parking lot. temperatures in pittsburgh today were in the mid 70s, and can easily soar to 100 degrees in a car parked in the son. we will have more on that situation as soon as we get it. an emotional day for the family of a murdered three month old baby as they laid him to rest today. tears flowed today in men low park. he was killed when a gunman opened fire as they left a friend's house in palo alto. the baby's mother and father were also injured. >> i have no words, as you can see. my baby's gone. but like the father said inside, the baby is with me and we will go on. >> she's recovering from her gunshot wound. a 17-year-old is charged with

murder in the case and expected to enter a plea in court next week. further south in san jose, four people are recovering from injuries after a melee involving at least 50 teenagers. the brawl started in mcdonald's parking lot on third and san carlos around 10:00 last night. many had just attended music in the park, and patrol officers saw the fight break out and called for backup. when more police arrived, the crowd broke up and ran. four people were hospitalized with stab wounds and other nonlife-threatening injuries. the cause of the fight is under investigation, but police say it may have been racially motivated. diane, almost quitting time on friday night for many people. >> not us. >> many people are about to hit the road for what should be a good weather weekend. many will take highway 17 to the coast. >> now a new cal tran project may add a little time to your drive. mary ann has more. >> reporter: hello, diane.

the good news, the construction work will be done mostly at night and during early morning hours. motorists tell me the bad news is that the project will last until end of the year. now that we finally have sunny weather, you can bet more people will be jumping on highway 17 and heading to the beach. but if you try to get an early start, construction crews may slow you down. they will be working on an $18 million project until end of the year. >> we are going to install a new drainage system on the north and southbound sides of 17 between summit road and bear creek road. in addition, we're going to pave both sites. then finally, we're going to upgrade the guardrails and median concrete barriers. >> they will work on north and southbound lanes, but one lane in each direction will always stay open. work will be done sunday through thursday night from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 in the morning, friday starts 10:00 p.m. until 9:00

ann -- nancy pelosi returned to san francisco to promote a health program called partnership for patients. health and human services secretary, kathleen sebelius joined her. they outline a program to make hospital care safer and less costly. specific goals are already set. >> if we are successful achieving the two goals, lowering readmissions by 20% in the next three years, lowering hospital acquired infections by 40% in the next three years, we actually will save a minimum of $50 billion from medicare, and that doesn't count medicaid and the private insurers. >> meeting the goals would save 60,000 lives and improve recovery time for more than a million patients. san francisco hospital is taking the lead in the partnership for patients program. coming up on the special 4:00 edition of nbc bay area news, oakland's uptown district

we want to update the funeral for the firefighters. the funeral portion ended awhile ago. the procession is about to get started. what you see on the left are some of the many fire trucks and apparatus that have come from all over the state which will take part in the procession. you should know, and this is important to know for those of you on the roads or heading on the roads when the procession starts, it will go down 280, a big section of 280 is going to be closed. southbound 280 from san francisco to daly city, from 101, the junction, to daly city is going to be closed. roughly they blocked out 3:00 to 7:00. looks like actually they will just shut it down for the portion of time they need it. but looks like that's going to happen pretty soon as the ceremony, the procession makes it to holy cross cemetery in

colma. we will keep you updated on how it is going through the evening. looking at stories making headlines around the world. >> thousands of syrian protesters appear to be demonstrating against the government again today. postings on the internet show protests in damascus and four other towns. they say at least four demonstrators were killed. house fled the violence for turkey. they set up camps outside the border for refugees. thousands of yemenese took to the streets. the president hasn't been seen since attacked. tens of thousands gathered to pray and then handed over power to the acting deputy president. they traced the e. coli outbreak to a bean sprout farm in germany. they say traces of the deadly

strain were found in the family's garbage bin. the deadly bacteria killed 31 people, sickened more than 3,000. experts aren't sure whether all of the tainted sprouts are out of circulation, and it is possible some are still being used by restaurants in the region, may have come in contact with other vegetables causing it to spread more quickly. and rain continues to fall over the already hard hit flood region of china. 12 inches of rain fell in four hours. the highest recorded amount in 200 years. the flood is forcing ma mass evacuation and cutting power to many areas. people are affected by the high water and there have been at least 54 deaths there. in health watch, newborns in hospitals in europe get the classics as they drift off to

sunny, hot weekend for us, but better than what we started with in june. 62 now in oakland. we have plenty of fog in san francisco, winds southwest at 20. strong on shore flow dropping temperatures from san francisco to santa cruz. 70 in san jose, and cooler with 69 in livermore. tonight, cloud and fogs inland. this weekend, a mixed bag. some fog, a little sun, some overcast. temperature in the 70s. it is not until next week that we look to be in the warmest stretch of weather we have had in about eight months. let's look at the satellite radar picture. no rain drops across california. that's how we like it, right? little cloud cover offshore. nothing to worry about. we are clear at the higher levels. to the south, following hurricane adrian. if you are doing any traveling to mexico and concerned, you

don't need to be concerned. this storm is going away from land. winds are gust to go 155 miles per hour. certainly a strong storm at least for the first eastern pacific hurricane of the season. tonight, we find that patchy fog for the coastline. temperatures in the 70s inland for saturday. that fog in the morning, it will be slow to burn off through saturday. for sunday, numbers tick up a little bit for us in the forecast. we head throughout tonight, what we find is patchy fog continuing to develop offshore. by 11:00 p.m., the fog starts to push inland. even for east bay communities, concord to livermore. slow burnoff of fog. saturday at noon, everyone still dealing with the clouds. it will be one of those afternoons you have to plan it in that window of clearing from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. when the sun breaks out. temperatures tonight in upper 40s, low 50s. 76 inan jose tomorrow, which
