us. i'm garvin thomas. >> i'm diane dwyer. thousands gathered to honor two firefighters who died doing what they loved to do. >> the funeral was held at st. mary's cathedral this afternoon. afterwards the caskets were loaded onto fire trucks that led a procession to holy cross cemetery where the two firefighters were buried. kimberly terry has a look at today's ceremony. >> reporter: the funeral lasted more than two hours as thousands came to pay their respects to the two men who made the ultimate staacrifice for the jo they loved. ♪ >> the strongest feeling i had after hearing what happened, and i couldn't shake it, was that i wanted to be in that house with my brother. and i say that with all

apologies to my four daughters. >> an emotional outpouring of love and respect today for two fallen san francisco firefighters. thousands of people, mostly firefighters from across the country and even some from canada and mexico, packed st. mary's cathedral for the double funeral. the flag-draped caskets arrived on fire trucks assigned to their engine company, 26. lieutenant vincent perez and anthony valerio were caught in a flash over last week. >> he they gave their all and gave it for all of us. >> reporter: speakers remembered valerio of a lover of life and jack-of-all-trades. he was often the best part of many people's worst day. >> he could walk into a chaotic situation, diffuse the emotional fireworks, pick up the pieces, and bring back sanity and levity

to an intense and dangerous ambulance call. >> reporter: loved ones say his gentleness was equal to perez's strength of character. they say he was a fireman's fireman. his brother and oakland police sergeant said split second decisions had to be made the day of the fire. those those decisions might be called into question, he knows engine company 26 was properly trained and under the command of grate lead a great leader. >> they were ready for that mission, and although he had a strong will, nothing is greater than the will of god. make no mistake, these men are gladiators, they fight fire. one of the most powerful forces created by god to save lives. to my brother, now you are fee. i will see you again, but not yet. not yet. >> reporter: neither firefighter had children of their own, but each is survived by family including numerous nieces and

nephews. in san francisco, kimberly terry, "nbc bay area news." >> as we mentioned firefighters from as close as oakland and as far away as canada and mexico were in attendance today along with citizens from san francisco all saying they just wanted to pay their respects. >> every one of us feel that loss along with them, because we're all of one culture, of one brother and sisterhood. it's important fob here to help support. >> it's just overwhelming to me, and i felt like i wanted to just come out and pay my respects because they risk their lives, these public servants, to save ours every single day. it's a story that hits home. it impacts. >> so many people arrived at st. mary's cathedral today that even all the seats in the overflow room filled up with hundreds more waiting outside. >> many members of san francisco's fire department would not have been able to attend today's funeral service had it not been for the more than 150 firefighters who came from across the bay area and

beyond to help out. those temporary workers from fremont, alameda county and other jurisdictions across the state staffed fire stations in san francisco today. the presence of these out of town fire crews allowing grieving members of the san francisco fire department to attend the funeral services. >> if this allows the san francisco fire department members to get some closure and be able to take care of themgtsz, then it's worth our time. >> the crews arrived at 6:00 in the mortgagning and were preparo stay as long as each firehouse needed them tonight. you can see much more of the service right now on nbcbayarea.com. we also have information on our website as to how you can help the families. after a heart-breaking week, the family of a 3-month-old baby who was shot to death gathered for his funeral today. they watched as the tiny casket

was taken from the church. he sdied while shot in his family car. his mother and father were wounded in the shooting as well. police arrested a 17-year-old on murder charges, and he's expected to enter a plea in court next week. we have new information tonight on the beating case of giants fan brian stow. nbc has learned that police may have a significant piece of evidence thanks to a sharp employee at a dry-cleaners in los angeles. the employee turned in a shirt that had stow's blood on it. patrick healey from los angeles has the latest. >> reporter: the evening brian stow was beaten nearly to death outside dodgers stadium, suspect number one had a white dodgers jersey and they identified jiminez at suspect number one three weeks ago. now we learn police have in evidence a bloody dodgers engineer sdee who brought it to

a cleaners. the dna analysis xwaj a match to victim stow. the source that first disclosed the shirt to us says they believe it was ramirez that brought it to the cleaners. ramirez's attorneys spoke with us after meeting with him in central jail. >> he doesn't wear clothes that require dry-cleaning, sxing this sounds preposterous. >> are ramirez jailed for a alleged parole violation they have held off charging him for the stow beating. they say ramirez has an ironclad alibi. the daughter has sold reports so. all along police declined to reveal what evidence they have other than ramirez's look-alike experience b experience. >> we have some significant, significant pieces to it that lead me to believe we do indeed have the right individual.

>> reporter: is it possible police want to pressure ramirez to give up information on someone else? >> if they're trying to do them they're doing it by remote control because they never ask him to give anything up. >> reporter: when we went to lapd for an the on the record comment, lapd said specifically that the shirt is not ramirez's, but declined to disclose who it is. suspect number two is described as wearing a black t-shirt so he was not wear gt bloody jersey at the time of the attack. prmgss are under way for monday's release of former b.a.r.t. police officer mehserle. today organizers for the coalition for justice for oscar grant announce they'll hold a demonstration sunday afternoon where grant was shot and killed by mehserle. he was sentenced to two years in jail, but is scheduledo tbe

released on monday after serving 11 months. >> this murder has created a movement that is growing in this city and across the state and across the country against police brutality and demanding accountability. this isn't the end. >> organizers say their protest will be peaceful, but they want to see justice served. a big shake-up in california today could leave a number of politicians fighting their political lives. the state released the first round of new congressional and legislative maps. if approved as is, many politicians would no longer live in their current districts. this is all happening because voters were frustrated by jair manderring by lawmakers who had the power to draw up districts. voters approved a new admission. the first draft is ofederal. the final map is expected to be ready by august, and some of the

biggest changes as of right now. san francisco would lose a seat in the state senate, and congressman jerry mcnerny wouldn't live in his district in the east bay. it is, of course, friday night and it's the start of the weekend. the beach looks good, but watch out if you take highway 17 to get there. maryaianne favro let us you kno what. >> reporter: the good news is construction work will be done at night and during the early morning hours, but motorists say this project will last until the end of the year. now that we've finally got sunny weather, you can bet more people will jump on highway 17 and heading to the beach. if you try to get an early start, construction crews may slow you down. they'll be working on an $18 million project until the end of the year. >> we're going to install a new

drainage system on the north and southbound sides of 17 between summit road and bear creek road. in addition, we're going to pave both sides and finally upgrade the metal beam guardrails. >> reporter: cal trans will working on the north and southbound lanes but one lane in each direction will remain open. work friday starts at 10:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. the next day and on saturday 10 p.m. until 10:00 a.m. the next day. brian drives highway 17 five times a way for his work delivering auto parts. he says he's experienced a few bumps in the road. >> yesterday it was 30 minutes to go about four miles. it was bumper-to-bumper traffic down the hill. it >> reporter: that's peace of mind for josh and his son who drive on highway 17 almost

to help the immigrants in the bay area. they say some immigrants were paying money to executor shunnists in el salvador who threatened to harm the family's home or get the victims deported. >> he they received phone calls or messages are from people who live in el salvador, but those people are unknown. the second way is that people who live in the u.s. are receiving executor shuns from family members from el salvador. >> the consulate told us today they instituted a program in el salvador to track down the executor shunnists and bring them to justice. anyone receiving threats should report incidents to the office in san francisco. they say 30% of the incidents reported have been solved. it was years in the making, but today the state of alaska released the limited edition of governor sarah palin's e-mail correspondence. they were requested back in 2008 when the all but unknown governor of alaska was picked to be john mccain's vice presidential running mate.

the state was supposed to respond in ten days but got extensions. the news outlets had to pony up $700 in fees to receive the 24,000 pages of photocopies. it it showed that palin was reluctant to appear on "saturday night live," that she thought some of obama's energy ideas were good and used her personal e-mail account to keep her state correspondence private. a new tablet is on its way. it's out in a week. looks graets, and our business and tech reporter scott budman gives it a first look. tablets are taking over, and why we have seen very few contenders to the early ipad thrown, this is close. it's the samsung galaxy tab 10.1, and it's a 10-inch screen, along with its thin light stature, put it right in the ipad wheelhouse. so do the features. >> you have google talk and im,

>> everybody is rushing to get their pad out there. let's check the weather around here. it's finally starting to warm up just a touch anyway. >> as we head throughout next week, it will get hotter here. some of the hottest weather in eight months down the pipeline. we had 74 in livermore and 68 in san raphael. we'll see that patchy fog forming as we head throughout tonight sdpor the weekend we see a mix of sun and fog and temperatures in the 70s. then we have to wait a few more days in our seven-day forecast before we get into those 80s. satellite radar picture shows mainly clear conditions from the north down to the south bay. down to the south and an update on hurricane adrian. this storm system not posing any problems in mexico, but it will kick up the seas with winds gusts at 155-plus miles per hour. we'll have the patchy fog this weekend with temperatures in the 70s for saturday and sunday.

so let's get a look as we head throughout the morning hours. we find the fog from the coastline and all of the inland spots by noon foam. it's a day where there's that small window of sunshine into the early afternoon hours. temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s it to start. as for tomorrow, we're looking at low to mid-70s here across the east and south bay. on your seven-day forecast, yes, it it warms up finally feeling like late spring and early summer. as we head into tuesday, wednesday and thursday low to mid-80s and father's day is officially sunday. we'll get you ready on friday. father's day is sunday, everyone. >> okay. it's going to be nice on friday, too? >> yes, it is. to go out and get your dads that perfect gift. >> great. thank you very much. >> you're welcome. all right. jim, what's going on in sports? a lot of stuff is it going on in sports, actually. >> well played diane. >> thank you very much.
