the meltdown is beginning in yosemite. the waterfalls are gorgeous. but where will all this water go? we'll have a live report from yosemite coming up. good morning. i'm christie smith, live in hayward where a couple cooperate, hand over their wallet and purse but the husband is shot anyway. tell you what police are saying about it coming up in a live report. a live look outside over the bay this morning. another warm one on tap. it's wednesday june 15th "today in the bay." good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us.
6:01 am
it's 6:00 this morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check in with christina loren, another warm one. >> yes, it's not officially summertime yet. june 21st, the first official day. because it's so warm and we warmed up rapidly after a record snowfall this year, we've got quite a few flood watches and warnings in place. the mountains, the whole state of california, tehachapis, which brings us to marla tellez, live in yosemite. how is it looking out there this morning? you look good. >> reporter: thank you, christina. i don't know about that. i can tell you the scenery is gorgeous out here. we are at the base, lucky for us today we're at the base of yosemite falls. i'm going to have allen show you the gorgeous waterfall. in case you didn't know this, yosemite falls is the tallest waterfall in north america. the fifth tallest in the world.
6:02 am
that cascading water is a sight to see for yourself. if you haven't already taken a trip to yosemite, check it out. we're here because of the massive snow melt. this water here used to be snow. not too long ago, the snow pack is 200% of normal. we've had a cool spring, as you know. with the rise in temps, that snow is quickly melting. if we can just pan down here and show you the result of all this cascading water, we're at the base of cook's meadow. this meadow itself is completely under water. not sure the size of the meadow but certainly several acres. it is all under water in the valley there are some campsites closed. campers are running into flooded trails. to talk more about this now, live with us this morning we have a park ranger in yosemite valley. you've been here serve years so you know the valley quite well. this is normal but this year a
6:03 am
little different in terms of flooding. >> every year we have high water from the spring meltoff. this year we had almost 200% of normal snow pack and a cool spring. this is the first week it's starting to warm up. so all that water, all that snow that's being melted at the high country is really just funneling down here to yosemite valley and creating these massive waterfalls, bringing the river up out of its banks. we've taken precautions and closed 40 campsites in lower pains and north pains, 20 cabins over at housekeeping camp of it's absolutely beautiful. it makes for great photos and the waterfalls are booming. >> i believe at home they are looking at video we shot yesterday of the merced river. it is raging right now. any cause for concern? >> there is no cause for concern. we don't think the water is going up over the road or damage structures. today is the peak. after today and this afternoon, the water should start going down a little bit. visitors who are coming in this weekend should still see
6:04 am
waterfalls just like this but maybe a few less flooded trails. we might open back up some campsites we've closed as well. >> i was going to ask that. i know the signs here tell you the campgrounds are full. people do want to take a trip up to yosemite. what warning do you have for them? >> because the road is closed because of snow pack, we actually prefer people go out to the park. if you come into the park, all of our campsites are full, reservations. you can try to get last-minute reservations but visitors have more luck trying to get a campsite out of the park. some are a short distance drive into yosemite valley so it's not too bad. >> we were lucky enough to stay at yosemite lodge. just gorgeous, right on the merced river. very tough assignment. somebody has to do it. thank you. i know, right? i won't get too personal about our room, it was just wonderful. but i can tell you here in yosemite, laura, it is expected
6:05 am
to be in the mid-80s. as carrie just mentioned, it's peaking. you're going to see the merced river pretty good. >> what happened to roughing it. i thought you were going to spark a fire. >> we stayed at the yosemite valley lodge. >> we didn't have s'mores. we should have brought the s'mores. >> thanks a lot. it is beautiful up there. we'll check back with you, marla. 6:05. i don't know if mike is a camper. >> i love camping, if it's like marla does, beautiful yosemite lodge and s'mores. definitely not the roughing it type. roughing it without the hair drier. the slowdown continues out of the altamont pass. typical pattern building 580 to the dublin interchange. bay bridge toll plaza the last few minutes we've seen the sun change positions, of course means sun in your eyes off the lower deck. some debris in lanes three and

"today in the bay's" kristi smith is live with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. what happened they just left the b.a.r.t. station coming from san francisco. they were walking down tennyson road right there underneath the b.a.r.t. tracks when two men held them up. one pulled a gun. the couple did what you might think is the right thing to do. they cooperated. they handed over a purse and a wallet. right after the man handed over his wallet, one of the men shot him, not once but several times. this happened 11:15 last night. the good news, the wife was not hurt in all this. the husband taken to the medical

center in castro valley. we're told he's in stable condition. the two men ran off. the suspect description is rather vague. here is what we know. the race is unknown. they are in their late teens or early 20s. 5'7" to 5'9" inches tall wearing white t-shirts and dark pants. they apparently put a cloth over their faces. it was kind of hard to get a good look at them. the police are working to flesh out their description. they are coast guard anyone who might have information on this, saw anything unusual to please give them a call. reporting live, kristi smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. frightening for them. oakland police have their own shooting investigation this morning. a man in critical condition after someone shot him at the intersection of 65th and herzog. police say they found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital and immediately underwent surgery. so far there have been no

arrests. new reaction from redwood city's elementary school superintendent over a disturbing attempted rape case. five boys charged with trying to rape two girls on a field trip to the peninsula. superintendent jan chrkristechc released this statement. nothing matters more to us than the safety of our students and we're thankful the police acted quickly after the students reported this incident to their counselor. she says the news is distressing and they will examine safety procedures to figure out if they need to make changes. the alleged attack happened in march when 20 students from kennedy middle school went on a social study field trip in redwood city. prosecutors say at some point during the trip the boys, ages 12 to 14, took two girls to a secluded area and assaulted them for five to eight minutes. the girls didn't say anything until last week and those boys are now in custody.
6:09 am
san jose police announcing they have arrested a south bay teacher on charges she molested a young student. police say they arrested 28-year-old colette phelps last month and she is on bail. she worked at the stratford school, a private group with 13 campuses in silicon valley. police won't say how old her victim was. they say they arrested phelps after receiving a tip. later today san francisco mayor ed lee will sign the measure will which transform treasure island into a housing and commercial destination. board of supervisors approved that redevelopment plan last year. after years of legal battles, 8,000 home, 150,000 square feet of commercial space, high-rises as tall as 150 feet will be built on the island. construction is set to take about 20 years to remake the former naval base. certainly changed the skyline there. it's 6:09 right now. another warm day on tap across the bay area. but if you don't like the heat,
6:10 am
stick around. cooler temperatures will prevail. let's check in with christina. >> or get out of the kitchen. looking good. mostly clear conditions, a little fog hugging the coast. inland clear as a belle. a gorgeous shot of the moon this morning. now the sun is up and we are well on our way to rm whatting into the 90s once again. you might need to crank that ac today if you're somebody sensitive to the heat. by tomorrow we're going to drop off by a few degrees and continue to cool down all the way throughout your father's day weekend. i've got the full forecast in just moments. right now take a look at visible satellite imagery for today. you can see here even when i set it in motion almost entirely clear, big strong ridge of high pressure, see clouds up and around that ridge. that extends all the way from the eastern pacific to the four corners region keeping clear, warm conditions in place for today. but as of tomorrow, that ridge starts to break down, drifting further to the east and away from the bay area. that means cool off.
6:11 am
so there's good news on the way, comfortable conditions for this weekend. 58 in hayward, 54 in oakland, 55 in napa. you can see here the contours already turning yellow. we still have green along the peninsula and north bay. that's because we did have a pretty good formation of the marine layer. it built to 1,000 feet this morning. it's not going to push all the way inland. high pressure doing its job dragging offshore winds pushing it back out to sea. 60 in san francisco, at noon 63 in hayward, 85 in livermore. we're going to round out the day in the 90s. if you want to see how hot it was in your city, check the facebook page. i'll be updating it throughout the day. i'll get excited with warmups, 78 on friday. cool off for the weekend staying comfortable, lots of sunshine. you know how it goes. cool, cloudy mornings, beautiful, sunny mild afternoons. check your drive now with mike inouye. >> never want to see

new this morning, beautiful live look at yosemite this morning. now, we're taking a look at all the waterfalls out there. we've had record snow pack. that snow is now melting with the warmer temperatures, although the water has got to go somewhere. we'll take a look at it coming up in just a bit. 6:15. just as facebook gets ready for the initial public offering, there's word the number of users may actually be leveling off, even dropping. bob redell has more on what some
6:16 am
are calling facebook fatigue. good morning, bob. >> good morning, laura. there is a website called inside facebook. it's a blogging and marketing research website. it's reporting that the actual website facebook saw a stu pendous decline. at the start of may the website records 155 million active users. by the end of the month, 149 million. that's a drop of 6 million people. that's quite significant. 1.5 million canadians dropped out as well as hundreds of thousands of more users in the uk, norway and russia. there's four possible reasons. these are speculative reasons. one is market saturation. a lot of these markets are tapped out. there aren't any more people that could be joining facebook.
6:17 am
another is fatigue, people tired of the website. could be seasonal, a temporary dip, just like we see . facebook does not release its monthly traffic numbers. this website "inside facebook" came up with these numbers by analyzing advertising data. facebook is criticizing results. they say broad estimates. they say they are pleased with their growth pointing out more than half their active users logon to facebook on any given day. keep in mind, facebook still does have 678 million users worldwide. it did see a lot of growth in brazil, india, mexico. excuse me, sir, are you a facebook user? >> yeah. >> are you? were you surprised to hear last month here in the united states they saw a drop of 6 million users. >> i saw that on the internet, yes, i did. >> why do you think that is? >> because everybody is on it? >> you think the market is
6:18 am
saturated? >> it is. it's already saturated. >> this is a drop where people were on it and decided to get off the website. some people think, they are sick and tired of it, got fatigue. >> yes, i'm on the facebook every day. i'm addicted to it. i think everybody is. >> what makes it so addictive to you? >> you've got to see what everybody is doing. you want to know everybody's business, what everybody is doing. >> what are you doing right now? >> get a cup of coffee and go to work. >> all right. take it easy, man. 678 million users. the timing of this news is sick, laura, because as you've probably been hearing, facebook is talking about, there's rumors about ipoing next year, valuation $500 million, if growth is down in terms of the number of users, that would be a negative. >> interesting to see if they find new avenues to expand as well. thank you very much, bob. making new friends all the time.
6:19 am
6:18 right now. later this morning we'll know hole be participating in the 34th annual america's cup set to take place in san francisco in a cup years. mayor ed lee and officials will host a ceremony to introduce the competitors. the oracle team will defend their title during the 2015 race. early this week the team practiced for the first time since winning the cup. did you see this? gusty winds, crashing waves flipped over one of their boats sending several crew members over board. everybody was okay. by this time next summer, you should feel a little more confident in the sunscreen you're slathering on to make sure it's keeping you safe from the sun rays. you are putting it on, right? starting next summer fda will roll out new labels for sunscreen bottles. if the bottle says broad spectrum, you're going to know you're protected from ultraviolet rays.
6:20 am
also new rules, spf less than 15 will carry a warning label. sunscreen will no longer be labeled as waterproof or sweat proof. you've got to apply and reapply. especially these days as well. sun is out over the bay area. by this afternoon, it's going to be pretty hot. >> we've already got a high humidity index, not even summertime yet. we are days away. the 21st is the official start of summer. take a look at where we ended up yesterday and put it in perspective. we were just in the 70s over the weekend. it was pretty cool around here. so we jumped up to 95 degrees in gilroy yesterday, 94 in livermore, 93 in walnut creek, southbay, 2 in south san jose. more of the same today. if not as warm, maybe a couple degrees warmer, that's what i'm forecasting. high pressure in control, no clouds in the sky right now. we have clouds trying to inch into the area but high pressure is making sure they just dry out. nothing getting into the bay area of it's going to be crystal
6:21 am
clear this afternoon. maybe a layer of haze inland, we do have moderate air quality out there. we're going to start to drop off. a trough of low pressure starts to break down that ridge, drifts to the east making warm conditions for the central portion of the nation. for us it means a cooldown, on-shore flow kicks back in. start out with a marine push each and every morning throughout the weekend. mostly clear, coolish starts, mostly sunny, mild afternoons. get to that seven-day in a moment. 58 in hayward, sunnyvale, headed to the 90s once again today. 91 degrees, down to 86 tomorrow. then the 70s come back. friday through the weekend. father's day looking pretty good. breezy conditions 79 degrees. we're going to see a little cloud cover to start us out. that's typical here in the bay area. back to you laura. >> thank you very much. 6:21. coming up we're going to take you back live to yosemite valley to get a look at some of the amazing waterfalls there and get a look at how the heat is really affecting the water there.
6:22 am
>> hopefully some heat is on pandora, the oakland-based company will sell its shares to the public for the first time today. we'll have full coverage coming up in tech today. watching roads looking at the bridge, a pretty smooth drive en, th w sllyoe'w hou re, thener we'll show yo e to head into the backups,

an easy drive so far holding up nicely as the volume starts to build up just a bit. no major slowing through this portion of your map. look at 101 and drive through san jose up through the area past shoreline. there's moffett, new incident reported. no major injuries but an accident has been called. i'll give you an update for 101 through santa clara. san mateo things like nice interchange 280 as well as 101 no major problems. that zero changed, used to say 67. p that's an issue with the sensors, not the roadway, i hope. i'll let you know if there's problems through san mateo. meanwhile another look outside, bay bridge toll plaza, changes in the last few minutes, onlights turned on, quickly building past the 80 overpass. building up towards that parking lot. often called a parking lot itself. you know what, scott, i want to talk about this other parking lot video we have. it was taken outside in l.a.

a whole foods parking lot. remember the swagger for toyota, minivan had a cool video. this is prius, pria. let's take a look. >> everybody trying to park. >> you can feel the tension in the electric mode timing perfect keeping up other dude trying to steal going the wrong way i've had a rough day. >> a lot of folks recommending on facebook. it's all over, i guess. >> we put it on our morning facebook page called whole foods parking lot, i'm in electric mode. i think that's my favorite part of the video. >> my favorite par is how he was able to rhyme the rap. >> and get a parking space at whole foods, home of the world's weirdest beards, my favorite part of whole foods. the video launched saturday and spiked on monday. last check it was like 400,000.
6:27 am
>> interesting to see what goes viral. >> very "saturday night live" h live"ish. >> pandora, today the company will start sealing shares to the public. the price will bring in $2.5 billion for the company. whether you invest is up to you. let's remember pandora was darn near bankruptcy just a few years ago because of all the high fees it has to pay the music industry. here is a chat with pandora founder from last year. >> you came this close to getting knocked off the internet based on the amount of money you had to pay the music companies? >> more than once, actually. we've been for two years under a dark cloud because of royalties. we pay performance fees for our songs and it adds up to a lot of money. pandora still doesn't make any money but has a tremendous user base. lots of people listen for hours and hours. more than they do the radio. they have advertising. >> you plug it into your car. >> i adore it. we have wireless cameras, a gym

yosemite valley. you are looking at a live shot of wonderful half dome. i'm marla tellez. i'm going to explain how the rise in temps is threatening some of this natural beauty coming up in our live report. hayward police are looking for two men that put a man in the hospital, shooting him during an apparent mugging. a live look outside from san francisco, alcatraz island. how hot will it get? we'll check in wednesday june 15th. this is "today in the bay." good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 6:31 right now. i want to get right to mike this morning. he's got a look at the morning commute for us. >> good morning, laura. things are starting to pick up through the tri-valley area,
6:32 am
livermore, altamont pass, 40s, into 30s, average drive out of the altamont pass to dublin interchange. things moving nicely through the rest as you approach the bay. folks funneling to the roadways are meeting up. the toll plaza, lights on, things are backing up in all lanes past that parking lot past the 880 overcrossing. things starting to build as we might expect at 6:32. christina, also a haze in the air. almost looks steamy. what do you have in store for the forecast. things warming up a bit but now changes ahead? >> there is a little bit of a change. you see that live picture. it is one of those mornings where we have crystal clear conditions even along peninsula. i'm noticing haze along the golden gate bridge. it's not all that bad. we could have socked-in fog. we don't because of offshore flow. one of the repercussions of this
6:33 am
warm-up, early warm-up, flood watches and warnings in place throughout the mountain ranges across the state of california, tehachapis, sierra nevada. if you are going to be traveling today or the weekend, you want to check ahead before you leave, which brings us to our own marla tellez. she's live in yosemite. marla, i have to say one thing. it looks absolutely gorgeous out there, even with all the runoff. >> it's spectacular, christina. good morning to you and good morning to everybody at home. i'm going to set the scene here and give you an idea of where we are this morning. i'm standing on the sentinel bridge near the base of yosemite falls, that gorgeous waterfall is over my right-hand shoulder. allen is giving you just a beautiful live look at it this morning. it is the tallest waterfall in north america. the fifth tallest in the world. that's over my right shoulder. over here, if allen can pan to his right, we're going to give you a live look at half dome. take a look at that magnificent
6:34 am
cliff, just gorgeous. i have to say i've actually hiked half dome twice. that's some props to me, right? below all of this is the merced river. that is where these waterfalls flow into. right now merced river below us, if we could take a look right down here, this is really calm. but i can assure you, some other portions of merced river just flowing fast and furious. if we could roll some video we shot yesterday when we got into town, you can take a look for yourself. merced river is flowing. i can hear that in my ear flowing fast and furious as i said. here is the issue. it is that massive meltdown, snow pack 200% of normal. a cool spring, of course. sunrise in temps causing a cooldown. campers are running into flooded trails already 20 tent cabins, 40 campsites closed.
6:35 am
this is reality here. now, flood stage is at 10 feet. park officials tell us we're currently at 11.6 feet, so we, indeed, are flooded. >> this year we had almost 200% of normal snow pack and cool spring. this is really the first week it's starting to warm up. all that water, all that snow that's being melted at the high country is really just funneling down here to yosemite valley and creating these massive waterfalls, bringing the river up out of its banks. we've taken precautions and closed about 40 campsites as well as 20 cabins over in housekeeping camp. >> now, here is the deal. this is normal, of course, this happens every year where the snow melts and causes runoff. the deal this year, though, we're three weeks behind schedule. park ranger carrie cobb tells me now is the busiest time of the
6:36 am
year for yosemite valley. it brings out the tourists, campers. if you're an annual visitor, you may have seen the runoff. it is simply a timing issue. so use some precaution when you're out here and do not be fooled by even such a slow-moving river like you're looking at right now because it can turn fast and furious at the drop of a hat. laura, weather out here today is expected to hit the mid-80s. don't be fooled by my gloves. it's a little chilly right now. it's supposed to hit mid-80s later on, maybe even 90. hey, i'm not looking for sympathy. i just don't want people at home go, why are you wearing gloves. >> you're the tough hiker. >> right, giving myself the credit there. it's a gorgeous hike if you haven't done it. >> it's gorgeous. glad you're enjoying it. 6:36. following an overnight attack
6:37 am
where a gunman targeted an east bay couple walking home from the b.a.r.t. station. now the search is on for the people who opened fire. the husband and wife arrived at the south hayward b.a.r.t. station from san francisco around 11:15 last night. as they were walking home on tennyson road, two men approached them. one had a handgun and demanded their purse and wallet. neither refused. but after the man handed over his wallet. one of the suspects shot him several times. those suspects fled on food. police are looking out for them this morning. a man in critical condition in oakland after being shot at 56th and herzog. he went to the hospital and immediately underwent surgery. so far no arrest in that case. time is certainly running out. state lawmakers have less than 19 hours to come up with a budget deal or they start losing pay. mike is live at the capital with budget negotiations for us.
6:38 am
good morning. >> good morning, laura. as these negotiations draw on, it appears voters becoming less impressed by the lawmakers. in fact, that new field poll showing it's down right bad for legislature. first and foremost the governor in this new poll, he finally appears to be losing support as well. his disapproval rating jumped 9% since march. voter support for his need for temporary tax increase for the budget deficit, that's fallen 10%. mean while a much grimmer picture for legislator. job approval now standing about 23%. that's less than one in four people approving of the job they are doing. worse. 69% of voters say they don't have confidence the legislature is moving in the right direction to resolve our budget deficit. >> this legislature has a long history of passing smoke and mirror budgets and it's time to put an end to that. we need budgets really balanced, focus the legislature's mind on
6:39 am
doing its job and doing it on time. >> state pro tem president says they are going to do their job on time. he does say they have a possible budget solution here ready for a vote sometime today, rely very heavily on cuts, likely will not have the tax increase vote they were hoping for at this point in time. at this time more meetings and negotiations to happen. the state senate expected to meet at 10:00 a.m. this morning, then some time today we are promised there will be a vote to possibly try and get a budget sent to the governor on time for once. live here at the state capital i'm mike teselle. back to you. >> nice to see if they get moving since their pay will be affected. sunny skies again, christina. >> sunny skies and mixed reviews, laura. a lot of people have been waiting for the heat. they were begging me for it until yesterday, then the complaints started rolling in. today we're going to see similar
6:40 am
conditions, if not a little bit warmer in your city yesterday 95 in gilroy, 94 in livermore, elsewhere it was warm. what a gorgeous day in the city. if you have the luxury of being in san francisco yesterday, it was just absolutely phenomenal. we're going to see that once again today. what's happening is we've got that offshore flow in place, winds coming from land warming up as they push out to sea. we have changes on the way for the weekend. a trough of low pressure. you see it here in the northwest. this sky is going to break down the big ridge, drift to the east. that's when we start to see warm conditions in the mid sebs of the nation. on-shore flow will resume, cool air cooling us down each morning, cooler afternoons tomorrow. 68 in livermore, 58 in sunnyvale, 53 in santa cruz. what a great beach day. i'm forecasting 85 degrees. at noon in the city, clear conditions. i think we'll lose what we do have in terms of that fog
6:41 am
hugging the coast right now by about 8:00 a.m. pt not going to last long. 70 at noon, mostly clear conditions, clear as a belle. 75 degrees in san francisco, 80 in oakland today. mid-90s elsewhere. i'll show you where coming up right now at 6:40 a.m. mike is already busy first day back. hey, buddy. >> good morning, good to be back. south bay northbound 101 north of 680, typical spot for slowing. some folks head in as they pass towards great america parkway, the exit there. there's an accident still in lanes. that might be an issue. only minor injuries reported if any at all. no major impact as far as the people involved. we should see some slowing if it happens in the next 10 minutes. i'll track that we do have an issue in the city. the accident just cleared on southbound park presidio boulevard, might be an issue for the next 10 to 15 minutes. we'll watch, see if there's reports of slowing past that
6:42 am
area. meanwhile into the city, bridges moving smoothly. stall report getting cleared at treasure island, meter lights on. live look shows you how quickly that impacted all lines even the 880. debris in the toll plaza, we might have slowing. i'll let you know if they have to close anything. >> we'll check back. thank you very much. 6:42. the president says he's working on high gas prices and unemployment. there's a new poll coming out today that shows how he is doing with voters after a month of tough economic news. tracie potts live in washington with more. good morning, tracie. >> laura, good morning. he delivered that message in puerto rico, a place where american citizens cannot vote. but he's hoping many of the 50 million hispanics, some of whom can vote in this country in the 50 states are listening. now, the president has been hammered by his republican opponents, a growing field in
6:43 am
this upcoming election. mitt romney in new hampshire yesterday saying you can't blame president bush anymore. you've got to take responsibility for these economic problems. we also heard newt gingrich who called this an obama depression, something you're very likely to hear again. jon huntsman saying he'll officially jump in the race in a week with an interesting perspective. he was china's ambassador. he says we no longer have a good place at the negotiating table when it comes to the global economy. rick perry who still says he's thinking about running but made an important speech before a new york republican group last night. he says stand with me the next few minutes perhaps a hint he's in. we don't know for sure. bottom line, is all this having an effect on the president? we'll find out when nbc's latest poll comes out later today. >> we'll check those numbers. thanks, tracie. the panda is back. see how sandoval did on his return to the field.

item now. facebook forever? maybe not. new numbers show the social network is losing members. is it facebook fatigue. bob redell describes what people are saying this morning. well, what are they saying? >> this is what they would be talking about "inside facebook" a website that blogs about the social media website. reporting facebook saw a very significant decline in the number of users last month. the start of may in the united states, there were 155 million active users. by the end of the month, 35 days later, 149 million. if you're keeping score, that's a drop of 6 million people. there's four possible reasons why this is happening. market saturation, just not any more people to be tapped. fatigue, people getting sick of facebook. it could also be a seasonal or temporary dip.
6:56 am
