they want your help. christie smith has more on the details. >> it's three weeks since michelle le disappeared. police say they fear the worst. but her family and friends, they are still hoping that she's out there and in need of help. they are going to be gathering this morning, they are launching a three-day search. they need volunteers. this is where they are going to be, they are going to be starting at 8:00 this morning on cypress avenue to try to cover ground in the hopes that they will locate the young nursing student. le was last seen when she went on a break from kaiser meds cal center on may 27. she went to the car in the parking lot. police say they questioned at least two dozen people but made no arrests. they believe she was likely killed but her family says they can't give up hope without knowing what happened to her. police have searched the nils canyon area and southern alameda

county. le's extended family from san diego has come up to help in the search and we're told that they are teaming up with class kids to train volunteers, volunteers can check in at 2535 cypress avenue between 8:00 and 5:00. you must be 18 years old to help. again this is going on today friday, saturday and sunday. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the east bay." >> our thoughts are with them. thank you. >> five fires in two weeks, one antioch neighborhood is on the edge after what investigators call a string of arson fires. contra costa county firefighters investigating the blazes that threatened homes in antioch. they are set in dry grassy areas between homes and one in a park. some homeowners say they have been dealing with threatening fires for three years. police say they are stepping up patrols in order to find the guy lighting the match. >> the man who slot and killed oakland journalist chauncey bailey and a homeless man says he doesn't expect forgiveness.

broussard told the group he wants families of the victims to know he is sorry. he told the paper he didn't think of his victims as people at the time of the murders, and did not contemplate the pain and grief that their deaths would cause. he confessed to killing bailey and a homeless man but he still is waiting to be sentenced on the crimes. his plea deal calls for a total sentence of just 25 years. >> prosecutors trying to decide whether to file charges against the football player arrested for refusing to leave a plane after the captain told him to pull up his pants. deshon marman was released on bail. this case is a lot more complicated than saggy pants. cheryl hurd toss latest. >> i think it's crazy. i think it's -- i don't know why they would do that. >> reporter: he is deshon's football coach. he says day two of the drama has

him in a tailspin. >> pull up your pants but at the same time what is it to the stewardess? why is she talking to him? why is she profiling him? >> reporter: she was talking to him according to police because she felt marman was displaying his underwear in an inappropriate manner. i spoke with him in the jailhouse interview wednesday night. he said, i responded to the stewardess and intended to pull up my pants when i reached my seat. i was upset. i just buried my brother, my best friend. but that wasn't good enough. police wound up arresting marman. he was scheduled to go before a judge but his court date was moved to friday. a spokesperson from the district attorney's office says wearing sagging pants is not a crime but assaulting a police officer is. the attorneys on the case are interviewing more witnesses to see if a crime was committed. his mother believes her son was being profiled. >> he's a big, tall,

light-skinned black boy with dread locks. gets on the plane with saggy pants, right there you're stereotyped. >> reporter: his former coach wants this to blow over quickly. >> football's a vehicle for him to move on and better himself. that's what it's about. you know. like i say, the streets eat people up. i don't want to see it happen to him. >> as cheryl touched on there was also a police officer hurt and that is part of what's going on. more than saggy pants. >> also in oakland, a suspected gang member accused of killing two men in a shooting back in april is due in court today. the two fathers were gunned down outside the restaurant sweet jimmy's near jacqueline square on april 25. 22-year-old clem tomkins was arrested in a raid on wednesday. in addition to two counts of murder he will likely be charged with attempted murder for wounding four other people.

police say they believe those killed and injured weren't targeted, rather, he thought he was firing at rival gang members. let's talk to christina about the weekend. good morning. >> good morning, scott. good morning to you at home in the east bay, boy, we were in the 90s on wednesday, yesterday. the 80s today. you ready for 70s. gm to you. as i zoom in to the east bay you can see mostly clear conditions. we have a little bit of cloud cover hugging the coast. i think we're going to see a round of fog and a good marine push which means mostly cloudy start. high pressure is regaining control of our pattern so this short-lived cooling trend, enjoy it. we're back up in the 90s even mid 90s by the end of next week. 56 now in hayward, 50 in san mateo, taking a look at the fog. we have reduced visibility all across the board, so travel cautiously. we are expecting pretty significant fog to form around 6:00 a.m. as per usual.

here's where we're headed later on. 79 in napa, 70 in oak lands, 77 in fremont and 79 in livermore. as we head throughout the weekend we'll cool off a little tomorrow. the full forecast coming up in moments. it's a getaway friday, mike, i was not alone on the road this is morning. >> and you wouldn't be alone if you went through livermore. i know that's not your route but we're looking at a slow drive right now. as folks come past north livermore, even slower than before. so the accident i reported still having an effect on the roadways. the construction crews around the area, westbound, 30 minutes out of the altamont pass and through the hoeart of livermore. take city streets as you cut through on 84 to 680. if you are staying on 580 continuing through castro valley, stick it out through the slowdown it's not as bad as it looks here as far as the extent but there is a slow drive past that earlier injury accident.

>> it's 4:42. welcome back. jerry brown has done something no other governor has ever, ever done. he has vetoed the budget. created by members of his own party. brown vetoed the budget plan saying it didn't go far enough and included questionable maneuvers. the budget may have been rushed through, this is the first time in years a balanced budget has been passed on time. also the first time that lawmakers would have forfeited pay if the budget were late. some experts say the veto could end up being a good thing. >> if the budget gets done in a way that doesn't cut services, the way that most californians don't want it to cut services,

don't raise taxes too much the way most want, and if we have a state that the economy recovers, then voters will reward that. if it doesn't happen that warks voters will punish that so it's not whether today is a good day for democrats or not. >> the governor is warning if republicans do not compromise on tax extensions and authorize a special election to put the question before voters, education and public safety will have to be slashed even further. this is something he has said for months republicans are pushing for pension reform, a spending cap, and changes to help california business. >> beauty in the stink, one of the east bay's scenic locations has a strange smell. it is a long standing problem at lake merit. as traci grant report there is may be a sweet solution. >> reporter: have you noticed a strange smell here? >> yes. almost every day. >> reporter: often it's inescapable, coming from lameri.

melissa walks around the lake every day and says right now it's particularly pungent. >> when it's really hot out and there is no breeze it will knock you out of your shoes. it really will. >> right now it could be dekag algae as you see, this is our algae season. june is when it peaks. when that dies and rots it can be smelly. >> reporter: richard bailey says the lake is actually a tidal lagoon. >> and this bottom layer doesn't always mix. the salt water is heavier. >> reporter: a solution is on the way. oakland's department of public works is knocking down this viaduct along 12th street to wide at any channel. that will cause more tidal flushing, movement in the water and should stop the stink.
