shooting in which a teenager was killed overnight. it happened around 11:40 last night on seminary and bancroft avenues. police do not have any suspect information they are revealing to us right now. that investigation is ongoing. a pr disaster for united airlines. a computer outage shut down operations for five hours last night leaving people stranded in the bay area and at airports across the country. this is l.a. where tens of thousands of passengers spilled out of the united terminal and onto the sidewalk. the line stretching on forever it seemed like. in chicago united's other major hub equally chaotic. tens of thousands of passengers lined up only to find out that they would be waiting and for a while. cheryl hurd takes us to sfo where frustrations were extremeextrem

extremely high. >> reporter: many united continental passengers waiting to take off from san francisco international, didn't know why they were still on the ground. >> there's no information. none whatsoever. there's maybe now some sort of information about the system being down. >> she just graduated from her graduate program and this is supposed to be her gift. >> it's not happening. >> reporter: united sent out a statement saying the airlines experienced a computer outage interrupting the airlines flight departures, airport processing and reservation systems. our technology team is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. >> anyone else with a boarding pass? >> reporter: those with a boarding pass were able to get through security. those who didn't, had to wait. >> been here for an hour and a half. my flight is not until midnight. >> we have several soldiers inconvenienced by this computer outage. >> i'm going to reno.

i guess i could have driven there by now. at the end of the day it's frustrating. make new friends and see what's happening. feel bad for united. this is probably not going to go over too well. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> the good news is united airlines let affected travelers cancel or rebook their flights without penalty. the airline's computer systems are up and running again but if you are traveling today, call ahead. a competitive swimmer who disappeared suddenly before a very important meet was found unharmed. they found 17-year-old carissa metcalf on friday. they passed out flyers with her face and information when they couldn't find her. investigators say she was disorientated when they found her at a nearby neighborhood park. metcalf disappeared shortly before she was scheduled to compete in a meet before the world championship next month. it's the same high pressure meet

swim legend michael phelps competed in as he made his way to the olympics. a different story for a missing nursing student. family, friends and dozens of volume here is who don't even know michelle le will continue looking for her in the east bay hills today. le disappeared from the parking lot at the kaiser hospital in hayward three weeks ago. hayward police say this is a homicide investigation but her family says they are not willing to accept that she's dead. >> it's frustrating. you know, we just want to find her home. we don't care so much that they get the guy or the girl or whoever is involved. we just want her home. >> the search will continue throughout the weekend. released again this time with no restrictions. convicted sexual predator could be freed from a state mental hospital any time now. seven years ago you might remember he was a regular fixture on the evening news and in the headlines when his parole prompted outrage in marin and alameda counties.

he settled in san jose until a change in the law required him to move to the east bay where he committed his last sexual offense. sexually assaulting a homeless man in a shelter. he agreed to chemical castration lived in his bay point home without incident until february of this year when he was sent back to a state hospital for concealing a platonic relationship with a man in his therapy group. in court records this week, prosecutors did not file a petition to keep him in custody saying at least two state psychologists found he was no longer sexually violent. he could be released as early as this weekend. this afternoon you can have a say about the plans for redrawing district lines which could change who represents you in sacramento. organizers are asking communities to speak up and offer suggestions if those new district lines don't reflect the neighborhood. after every census the state is required to reshape districts based on the data collected. today's meeting starts this

a cool start to the day. tomorrow is father's day and it is going to be warmer. a special happy father's day wish to our photographer. he's a dad too. heading to a nearby starbucks right after robbing a bank probably not the best idea. that's exactly what mountainview police say 53 year old did on friday. he walked into a california bank and trust in mountainview around 9:00 in the morning and walked out with $1,100 in cash. he threatened a teller with a gun. then about a half hour later an officer saw a man matching the description of the robber sitting at a starbucks around the corner reading a newspaper. no gun was found but police say he had that missing cash. a freak accident at the san

mateo county fair thursday sent a 10-year-old boy to the hospital. he was hit in the head when someone's cell phone flew off a ride. the iphone flew with enough force to send the boy to the emergency room where doctors used two large staples to hold his wound closed. >> i didn't really react at first. then i started touching my head at first. did someone throw anything at me? >> i turned around and there's just blood going everywhere. >> that poor baby. signs are clearly posted warning riders to empty their pockets before getting on any ride. the boy's mother says he's resting well and recovering nicely. commander of the british empire is a high honor given to elton john and now a silicon biotech executive. we see what it gets to get that honor. >> reporter: to his colleagues,

than today. gray skies in oakland. 55 degrees. you just saw a bit of san francisco there. patchy low clouds. a little bit of mist with low clouds this morning at 54 degrees. in san jose we see more sunshine around the santa clara valley. 54 degrees. notice the wind direction. southeast at 14. cooler air coming up from south this morning. 40s and 50s outside right now. healthy sea breeze punching into fairfield this morning. with this ocean air conditioning today, our temperatures for the most part will probably be hanging out in the 60s and 70s before things start to warm up come tomorrow. no worries today in terms of rain. clearly the jet stream is way off to the north. any chance of rain and showers will be from oregon up toward washington and the cascades. for the sierra as temperatures climb through the end of the weekend into monday, we'll see warming temperatures there. watch out for the ongoing snow melt as the rivers and creeks and streams running out of the high country still running quite high with some flood watches still posted in the high country from lake tahoe down toward

yosemite in a few spots. hour by hour with temperatures today notice what happens towards the afternoon with a cool day lots of green on the coast indicating 50s to low 60s. est is inland for most places and then as we jump toward tomorrow morning, out toward fairfield, 60s for the morning. that's indicating we're starting to see some north winds or maybe a bit of an offshore pattern develop into monday. as early as sunday afternoon, those temperatures for father's day plans out to the tri-valley warming easily into the 80s. school in san francisco. today's highs, looking at 60s and 70s for most of the bay area today. maybe as warm as near 80 degrees. seven-day forecast with summer officially starting on tuesday. it will feel like it with 80s andgr 90s inland. gorgeous 70s on the coast. nice for outdoor plans or bird

watching around the bay. back to you. >> one activity that's very easy to do around the bay area particularly this time of year. very fruitful time of year for bird watching. joining us this morning for great bird watching tips. how did you get into it? >> long, long time ago. it's just a nature thing. birds are fascinating. they are like us. very curious. colorful. easy to identify once you learn how. it's just a lot of fun. >> i would assume talking about the weather and microclimates, i would assume there's a big variety that you can see here in the bay area. >> we have a huge population here. we have some species that are dwindling because of so much development and everything and this is one of the areas that really tries hard to protect them and make people aware of which ones are endangered. >> driving in on the freeway to work, i see some red tail hawks

on my way in. of course we see the gulls at the beach. i would assume there is a big variety. where is some of the favorite spots for you? >> you get all of the water birds and shore birds and water birds are just always an abundance of them. so many different kinds. and then you also have the predators, hawks that fly around and variety of others that are going through the brush. a great place to go. we just have an embarrassment of riches of places to go here. you have redwood forest close by 20 minutes. of course we have lots of resources for people that want to learn about birding as well. >> you know, sit on a park bench and have lunch outside. you'll see gulls and pigeons. >> they all deserve to be here. >> what time of day would you say is the best time if you wanted to go out and really kind of experience it? >> generally they are more

active in the morning in early morning and late afternoon. that's their most birds feeding habits and they are around most of the time. if it's raining or really windy, they are going to be hunkered down mostly. if it's a nice day, this morning when i came in here you had hummingbirds out in front of the office. busy working flowers in front of the building. you don't have to go very far to see them. >> very good. a great activity to do with family and with kids and once you get them hooked, they'll be bird watching. maybe not formally but looking to the skies and perches. >> that's why i do beginning bird classes. kids come to them with their family and when kids get into ce, at the just get hooked. 's all about the curiosity in identifying something they haven't seen before. >> there's a family workshop today. the problem is this one is full. good news is that you will have other ones and it's relatively inexpensive. $10 a person. price of going to a movie and

tradition. bob redell explains. >> reporter: your average light bulb lasts maybe three to five years depends on how much you use it. but here at firestation number six in livermore, california is the light bulb that seems will never go out. how long has the bulb been burning for? >> it will be 110 years this summer. >> needed a time line on what transpired. >> reporter: you must go backwards quite a distance on this time line to get back to 1901 when this light bulb was given to the livermore fire department for use as a night light. >> always the first question, is it still burning? >> reporter: the real burning question is why. >> it has last the so long. >> to find out protectors of the livermore light bulb sent a

meteorologist rob mayeda. i know my dad and husband would like fishing weather today. >> that would be nice and relaxing. chilly out. maybe more clam chowder like ather this morning. gray skies everywhere. sea breeze pumping in low clouds. it's cool out there. we do have mist at the low clouds this morning. there you see the sea breeze reaching into fairfield this morning. southwest wind at 16. we don't have really any worries about rain. jet stream way off to the north. what we'll deal with today is that steady sea breeze with low clouds probably through midday for inland spots. patchy low clouds inland topping out with temperatures inland in the 70s to low 80s today. a cool 63 in san francisco. today the coolest day we'll see the entire seven-day forecast because just in time for father's day we're talking about a warming trend to wrap up the weekend. a full look at your father's day forecast and seven-day forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much, rob. oakland police are investigating a shooting in which a deteenager died overnig around 11:40 last night on

seminary and bancroft avenues. the boy was shot while sitting in a car. police are not releasing suspect information right now but say their investigation is ongoing. this morning a tech executive in silicon valley facing criminal charges for allegedly luring a canadian teenager to fly to the bay area for sex now faces a civil lawsuit as well. san mateo county prosecutors have charged maxim integrated services executive scott mckibbin with two felonies involving a 16-year-old boy last october. police arrested mckibbin at sfo when he took the boy there to change his flight reservations. the attorneys say they are seeking damages to pay for the teen's medical and psychological care. >> it's our thought that this individual is a perpetrator. he's extremely dangerous. the internet is the pedophile's playground so to speak. we have complete faith that the district attorney's office san mateo county is going to handle this criminally but there are

civil penalties that need to be enforced. >> scott mckibbin and maxim integrated services could not be reached for comment. federal officers busted a multistate marijuana ring with connections to the east bay. federal prosecutors say yesterday they broke up a nationwide pot trafficking ring that took marijuana grown in northern california and distributed it nationwide. officers say they arrested the alleged ring leader, anthony guidry, and 18 others. they say they seized more than 70 pounds of marijuana. a retired law enforcement officer is accused of killing his neighbor's dogs with poison laced meatballs and this may not be his first doggy death. the owner rescued a puppy last year and also had a long haired chihuahua. she lost both of them in one

weekend allegedly at the hands of a neighbor infuriating by the dogs' barking. investigators say that he sent a year's worth of unsigned threatening letters and then threw poison meatballs into the yard killing both dogs. >> he planned this out and actually did this. it's not the first time. it makes me sick. i don't know how he can do it. and a retired police officer. >> police arrested the man on suspicion of willful cruelty to animals. they believe he may have poisoned a different neighbor's dog back in 2003. a string of home burglaries on the peninsula have authorities telling residents to be on the lookout for burglars. police say seven homes in hillsboro have been burglarized since the beginning of april. most burglaries happened during the day when nobody was home.

residents are encouraged to install likes on sliding doors. no description of the suspect has been made available. it is going to be painful all the way around. santa clara county approved a budget that cuts social services to the working poor, the homebound, seniors and troubled kids. the new budget totals $4 billion. a supervisors got to that number by bridging a $219 million gap that included labor concessions, 25% cut to community based social programs and more than 300 county jobs are also cut as well. california is without a budget and that means state lawmakers are not getting paid. proposition 25 passed in november by voters calls for lawmakers to lose their paycheck and per diem stipends when the budget is late every day. they will have to determine if the budget is late since lawmakers passed one but it's not a working budget.

the howard jarvis taxpayer coalition will sue the state if politicians get paid without a working budget in place. b.a.r.t. wants your help. all of you who ride the b.a.r.t. in the east bay this morning are invited out. b.a.r.t. officials say they have the oldest fleet of train cars in the nation and they are preparing to replace them but they want your input. this morning they are holding a seat lab they call it to give the public a chance to help them choose new seats. each participant will be given a seat to try and answer a short survey about their experiences. b.a.r.t. says they are expecting to approve a contract to hire a new train car builder by the end of this year. the seat lab will be held this morning at the community park center in antioch from 11:00 this morning until 2:30 this afternoon. tips on keeping your kids safe this summer. find out where dad a

looking live this morning with folks heading out for early exercise. hope they are wearing sunscreen. that's a safety tip we get from experts. summer is just a couple days away but already kids are headed outside because school is out. the child safety outreach program at children's hospital is dedicated to preventing injuries in children so summer is a very important time. nancy sanchez is here to tell us about the program. thank you so much for joining us this morning. we love it when kids are out from school and they are having fun and doing plans but it's always a risk for injury as they are out of their comfort zone, right? >> throughout the year there are child safety issues that we address but particularly in the summer there are some special issues. falls have become a great child injury issue and with windows

open and screens children are at risk of falling. it's quite a high risk for young children. >> it doesn't take much force. most of us grown-ups touch the screen and think we'll back off but they don't know. >> they can pass right through or fall off playground equipment. all kinds of falls. we have all kinds of programs in place to keep kids safe. >> you try to reach out. you go to where the people are. >> we do both. we have child passenger fitting station at our hospital in the parking deck throughout the week and we go out in the community. we've had 40 events in the past year at different places including at kohl's. >> that's what we're looking at making sure that car seats are installed properly. i think this is probably a particular concern in the summer because sometimes kids get passed off. grandma takes them for a couple days because mom and dad have to work. make sure the car seats are installed in every car.

>> in every car and when we do spot checks, 80% are not properly installed. people are well meaning but they don't have the car seat properly installed. it is worth going and getting the education and having certificate fight technician check the seat and make sure the child is snug and safe and make sure the child stays in that seat for quite a bit of time. we say six years or 60 pounds and actually best practice is up to eight years. >> even if they say, mom -- >> exactly. as long as possible. use a child restraint seat rather than a lap belt for a child. >> you all see the worst of the injuries really. a lot of them can be prevented with proper use of helmets and making sure they are not just on their heads but buckled. >> buckle up your brain we call that program. we have billboards with safety messages on the freeway this summer. people can catch them if the summer safety issues. the other is hypothermia. people think they can leave the

and then as we get into the seven-day forecast, we're talking more 90s not just for fairfield but perhaps even san jose as we roll into the start of summer. today's highs around the bay area, coolest days of the next seven days we'll see around here. 60s for san francisco. near 70 in oakland. as you head further inland you'll find 80s but you'll have to head quite a ways inland to find temperatures. tomorrow will be easy to find 80s for inland valleys and then kind of hot as summer rolls in tuesday morning officially and right on schedule. 90s showing up there in your seven-day forecast trending cooler toward the end of the week. >> nice thing would be to not make dad stand in front of the grill on father's day. >> it will be warm but not as warm as tuesday and wednesday. should be nice. one of the toughest jobs that a dad has is putting all those things together that we buy. no leftover pieces or screws, right? maybe that's why there's a freeby offered for father's day.

>> looking live this morning, a coupe minutes before 8:00 but before we send you on your way, we want to talk about some of the best filmmakers all in san francisco for the black film festival bringing some well known names to the bay area. publici publicist jackie wright joins us this morning and filmmaker kevin eps also here this morning. this is your second film about the same topic. what can you tell us about the film and how the first one was

received. >> the first one was received very well. a few years later this new film around the same subject is sort of an extension of that bringing people full circle and updating them on the current situation and just the state of the community. >> it was a packed house last night. packed house. it was well received. a lot of wonderful dialogue from the film about some of the changes and some of the recurring conditions that are happening. >> is that the goal of the film festival? sometimes film festivals are about entertainment and taking us somewhere else or is the goal to bring us back to where we need to be to see what's happening in our communities? >> that's it on the head right there. it's about emerging artists like kevin and also established artists like mario van peoples.

two films are in the festival. things fall apart. and black, white and blue. giving an opportunity for young filmmakers and also those established voices to work together to mingle together to give a new vision for not only the filmmakers but for the wider audience and the san francisco black film festival is a family tradition of a vision of opening the doors for everyone and for the wider community to come into the living room of the san francisco black film festival and to see from the perspective of voices like kevin eps of what's going on. >> kevin, obviously it starts with a passion and with a vision but then you get feedback and you take it to the next level. what kind of feedback have you gotten and are you encouraged to remain in film making? >> yes. that's my career. that's what i do to make a

>> celebrated father's day early. we took daddy fishing. beautiful weather here. >> today not too bad. we'll have coastal clouds. temperatures in the 70s to nearnear 80 inland today. tomorrow for father's day plans whether they include fishing, warmer in the seven-day forecast. >> congratulations again to you on your emmy win. we'll be back. hi. i'm lisa and with me again today is dave mulligan, host of great getaways a popular travel show. we're here at the beautiful gardens. a national trust for historic preservation side in woodside, california. dave, you got to go to just an equally beautiful spot in southern oregon, didn't you? >> absolutely. that's why this is so appropriate. southern oregon, green and lush and flowers everywhere. >> for this episode, you got to do something completely different. you got to go on a road trip with your family. how did it go? >> normally we fly to exotic

locations. we loaded up the wagon like when i was a little kid with my parents and did a road trip and headed north and had an adventure. >> memories with the family. hopping in the car and going. >> absolutely. >> where did you getting too first? >> we started in ashland. everyone knows about ashland. home of the oregon shakespeare festival. we start ted theater. we saw a lot of shows. >> how does that work? is the season all year long or plays just a few times a year? >> it's actually about nine months long. you can see it online. we'll give you the website to check it out and see the schedule of shows. 18 shows a year that rotate in three main theaters and it's fantastic. world class. i got to interview anthony if you saw "silence of the lambs" he was the creepy doctor. he's amazing. not creepy at all in real life. you'll recognize actors from tv and movies. that's ashland. >> what a unique experience.

after you saw these great plays, where did you getting too? >> we headed out and went to medford. there are vineyards everywhere. 150 in southern oregon. people have no idea. it's like napa valley 30 years ago. very charming. quaint. some of them are big. just uncrowded. great wines. we started in medford. then we did the applegate valley which is like this. long, winding valley back there. hills. it's all green. great wine back there too. >> you got to go to harry and david. >> yes. that's back in medford. i know you want to know about that. you've seen the fruit plates you can order. we went to the factory with different popcorns and chocolate. it's beautiful. >> you also got to go off roading a bit in the wild country. how was that? >> the road river is up there. first of all, did you ever see "the river wild" the movie? they shot that up there. big white water.

the fishing word class steelhead fishing. we saw a place called morrison's lodge. we'll have a family reunion up there. an amazing place. >> this really surprised me. there's a huge hotel and casino in the middle of nowhere like a mini las vegas in the middle of oregon. >> nothing like las vegas around it. it's out in the green. it's called seven feathers. we stayed there a couple nights. it's the beverly hills of all rv parks. i have never seen anything like that. if you have an rv, seven feathers. >> i have seen pictures of crater lake that look beautiful. how was it in real life? >> amazing. we're circling up and around again. it's one of the deepest lakes in the world. it's a volcano that blew its top a long time ago and then collapsed. it is pristine, cold, super deep. great fishing. camping. amazing place. >> now in your notes i read that oregon is sometimes referred to

as oregon unexpected. what does that phrase mean? >> that's the klamath county area. you go from incredible waterfalls that is just amazing. 300 feet high. and then an hour later we're in a cave in lava bed national monument it's called. skull cave. ice down in the bottom. 200 feet deep. this is all in the same afternoon. after going to wineries. >> so there's something for everybody. there's something for everybody. >> there really is. >> how can we find out about your trip if we want to plan our own road trip adventure, how do we find out about all of the things you got to do? >> just go to southern oregon.org/getaways and they have all of the information and deals on there and you can watchuwatch u our whole show again. >> thank you again for coming back and sharing your great adventures. i love hearing about them. i also want to thank the center here for welcoming us for the
