and welcome to "today" on this tuesday morning. i'm ann curry. >> and i'm matt lauer. if you're watching the weather, you could see some strong storms from texas all of the way up to michigan. that follows monday's system that produces dozens of tornadoes. >> fortunately there are no reports of serious injuries. we're going the get the latest and al's forecast. also ahead, casey anthony trial was brought to an unexpected halt on monday as judge admonished lawyers on both sides from bickering. is that case now headed for a mistrial? we'll talk about that, and we'll talk about the new report that highlights the alarming rise in dangerous food allergies in children. we'll tell you the details on that. also this morning, shocking new claim from latoya jackson. she says her brother michael was

scared for his life and believed someone would attempt to assassinate him. let's begin with the stop stories of the morning. savannah guthrie is there. good morning to you. >> good morning, ann and matt. in the news this morning, there's hope today in arizona where crews battling massive wildfires have had some relief from the weekend's blistering winds. but hundreds of residents are still in evacuation centers and dozens of homes have been consumed. nbc's miguel almagare is in sierra vista, arizona, this morning. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. fires are burning across the region but the monument fire is considered the top fire priority anywhere in the country. today, it's still threatening homes and it's also on the move. our first look behind the fire lines outside sierra vista, arizona. the monument fire, a wall of flames, has charred 42 square miles, at least 60 homes destroyed. while some were allowed to return home monday night, 13,000

had been evacuated. many living in shelters. >> see right now it's nice and green. >> reporter: arizona like several drought-stricken states is a tinderbox ready to explode. this year 4 million acres have been devoured by wildfires nationwide. the forest service says this historic wildfire season is caused in part by climate change. but arizona senator john mccain created his own firestorm saturday saying undocumented immigrants may be behind some of the blazes. >> they have set fires because they want to signal others. they've set fires to keep warm. and they have set fires in order to divert law enforcement agents. >> reporter: a spokesman for the u.s. forest service says there's no evidence to support mccain's claim. the national guard will join firefighters near the front lines later today. the good news, calmer winds are expected. savannah?

>> all right. miguel in sierra vista, arizona this morning, thank you. today marks disgraced anthony weiner's last day in congress as his resignation goes into effect at midnight tonight. his official letter of resignation will be read on the house floor today. he admitted last week to engaging in online sexual relationships with several women. 44 people are dead this morning after a russian passenger jet crashed in heavy fog bursting into flames near finland. eight people survived the crash including a 9-year-old boy. president obama will announce tomorrow his plans for the first phase of a drawdown a of u.s. troops from afghanistan. he's expected to start bringing troops home next month and to hand over power to the afghans by 2014. now, to wall street. cnbc's melissa lee is at the new york stock exchange for us this morning. melissa, good morning. >> good morning to you. european markets are calm ahead of a key confidence vote in

longest forecast of the year. >> we have severe weather to talk about. in fact, yesterday we saw a lot of severe weather. this is in sell bran nebraska. hamilton and york county. look at these storm chasers getting awfully close. cars going by just as the system moves on passed. then we have the arizona wildfire to talk about. the wallow fire is still continuing. the good news is they are finally seeing a lightening of the winds. those winds are finally dying down. that's good news. at night, bard, california, we're starting to see wildfires cropping up there. smaller fire but, again, very dry over the last 24 hours. they're having some problems. here's the risk area we're talking about. stretching all the way from texas on up into chicago, as far east as charleston, west virginia, as far north as minneapolis. showers and thunderstorms already firing up due to a big aea of low prrosu areunne braska. we look for more tornadoes there as well. rainfall amounts from one to three inches of rain from duluth, minnesota, all of the way down to houston, texas.

press conference. and the fact is i just had been briefed on this situation by a forest service official. and we all know that people who come across our border illegally, according to the fire service, according to the border patrol, according to the local sheriffs and law enforcement agents that these fires are sometimes some of them have been caused by this. and so, again, i'm puzzled over that there should be any controversy since the fire service is on record as saying exactly what i just repeated because i had been briefed on that just an hour or so before the press conference that we held. >> i'm going move on to another major story that's making news now. and that's the president's expected, planned drawdown of troops from afghanistan next month. especially in light of bin laden's -- the killing of osama bin laden. this morning the "l.a. times" quoting unnamed -- multiple unnamed administration officials

saying the president expects to bring 10,000 troops home by the end of this year. and this is while general petraeus has talked about 3,000 to 4,000. how much is too many? is 10,000 too many to you, senator? >> first of all, i would like to examine the number that the president comes forward with. secretary gates has been very clear and very emphatic that, quote, modest withdrawal is in our best interest. i, obviously, would like to know exactly what general petraeus' recommendation has been, as well as other military leaders. but -- so i would like to make -- wait to make a judgment but if they're support troops, i think that that is somewhat acceptable. if they come out of the 30,000 surge, then i think that's a matter of concern. >> meantime, i would also like to ask you about something that the gop front-runner mitt romney said. he raised some eyebrows saying, quote, we learned that our troops shouldn't go off and try

and fight a war of independence for another nation. only the afghanis can win afghanistan's independence from the taliban. do you think the gop front-runner made a mistake with those comments, sir? >> i'm not so sure it was, quote, a mistake. but i think we should remember why we went to afghanistan. it was a direct result of 9/11. because the attacks were planned and orchestrated by al qaeda in afghanistan as we know. so we took our eye off the ball. i will freely admit, when we diverted attention to iraq. we are succeeding on the ground militarily. and we have made significant success. this reminds me a little bit, ann, about of the summer of 2007 when everybody wanted to bail out of iraq. and there was a handful of us, including general petraeus, who said, no, we can win this thing. >> house speaker john boehner, i know i'm going on a lot of different topics. >> sure, no problem. >> lot of stories are making news.

members of your party are saying that the president needs congressional approval now to continue war operations in libya. it's been three months. do they have a point there? >> i think they have a very valid point. i wish the president, also, by the way, would speak more to the american people about the libyan situation. gadhafi is crumbling. he will go, in my view. unfortunately, because u.s. air assets were not used to any effect, that situation has been prolonged with needless deaths and casualties. but the president clearly has engaged the united states in hostilities and john kerry and i have a resolution that we're going to be bringing to the floor as soon as possible. >> all right. last question this morning, senator. and it's about the presidential campaign. you know the latest numbers the nbc news/"wall street journal" poll found just 45% of republicans are happy about the current crop of candidates on the republican side. would you consider -- would you be tempted to jump in this race

if the numbers hold true as we move further down the road? >> ann, there's a long history of masochism in my family but not so severe to make me want to jump in again. >> that's the final word then, sir? >> final word. thanks for having me on, ann. >> it's great to talk to you senator john mccain. thanks so much. and now here's matt. >> all right, ann. thank you. there are new developments on the largest job discrimination in american history. on monday, the supreme court rejected a class action suit by more than a million women against walmart. a decision that will make it a lot harder to mount large-scale bias claims against companies. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams is at the supreme court this morning. pete, good morning. >> reporter: matt, some of the women who brought this lawsuit say they will push ahead with their discrimination claims against walmart. but in a major defeat for them, and as many as a million others, the supreme court threw out their massive class action lawsuit.

it's a huge legal blow for christine turned down for a raise at a sam's club store and betty dukes, a walmart greeter who helped launch this case. she vows to fight on somehow despite the loss. >> it does not take away any of the belief that we have that our claims are justified and right. they won one battle but the war is far from over. >> reporter: they joined other women in filing a class-action lawsuit, claiming that walmart had a culture of gender bias that permeated its more than 3,000 stores, affecting decisions on hiring and promoting. but by a ruling of 5-4, with all three women justices dissenting, the supreme court said that wasn't enough. they say the employees failed to prove that walmart had a general policy of discrimination or to identify a specific common reason that caused all of the women to lose out on a raise or a promotion. lawyers for the company say this huge case is now dead. >> walmart has always said if there are individuals who have valid claims, the company wants to address those claims.

but that's a different issue than trying to lump everyone into one big, massive class action which would be completely unfair. >> reporter: lawyers for the women vow to try smaller class-action lawsuits against viewer stores. the cases have already produced some benefits. >> a lot has happened in the ten years since we filed this lawsuit. walmart has been forced to make some changes in the pay policies and the promotion policies. >> reporter: both sides agree the decision will make it much harder to bring big class actions against corporations by generalizing a small number of claims into a big lawsuit. >> i think this is the supreme court's most important class action decision ever. it erects very big hurdles to bringing a single lawsuit by lots of employees against a big company. >> reporter: though the women say they'll keep up the fight it may be hard for many of them to find a lawyer with only small amounts of backpay at stake for each of them. that's why they filed the class action lawsuit in the first place, matt. >> pete williams at the supreme court this morning. pete, thank you very much. it's now 14 after the hour.

once again, here's ann. >> matt, thank you. police are investigating the cause of a fiery car crash that killed two people including ryan dunn, one of the stars of the once popular mtv show "jackass." jeff, good morning. >> reporter: ann, good morning to you. if you've ever seen "jackass" the tv show on mtv or the three movies that followed you have seen ryan dunn's work. she's done everything. he's done stunts and pranks. but this was not that. no stunt. no jokes here. there were no tv cameras rolling. police say instead, ryan dunn was driving back from a bar at about 3:00 in the morning in this small area in pennsylvania, driving down this road at a high rate of speed, police say, when he lost control of the car, swerved off the road, plowed through trees and landed in the woods. ryan dunn was not a role model

and he never claimed to be, turning childish pranks into a money machine. he was part of the core cast on "jackass." first on mtv and then in three feature films which grossed hundreds of million of dollars. any number of these pranks could have killed him. but it was a simple drive during ryan's personal time that would end his life. early monday morning he posted this photo online at a bar with friends. that's him on the left. these photos also taken that night. the bar owner says he had a couple of beers. just hours later police say ryan was behind the wheel of his porsche and, according to published reports, may have been driving over 100 miles per hour. his car lost control, smashed the guardrail, and burst into flames. >> their show was called "jackass." and then all the dumb things this is -- it's just horrifying.

>> reporter: at only 34 years old, ryan dunn was dead, along with a friend in the passenger seat. there was nothing left of the porsche. investigators identified ryan from his tattoos. >> he's going to be really missed by everybody. oh my god! it's moving! >> reporter: featured in a "jackass" movie she says ryan has sped before. have you yelled at ryan for speeding? >> yes, i've yelled at him for lots of things. >> he tweeted a picture of himself drinking just hours before the accident. >> i know. >> what do you make of that? >> he is not a big drinker. he was always responsible. >> with drinking and driving. >> as far as i know, he was, yeah, so i can't imagine that he would do that. >> reporter: just this month one of ryan's final public appearances. on nbc's "minute to win it" playing for a children's charity. monday his cast mates, too upset to speak, instead took to twitter. johnny knoxville wrote, today i lost my brother ryan dunn.

my heart goes out to his family. rest in peace, ryan. i love you, buddy. and friends say everyone loved him. >> i'm sick because it's a waste. sick because i loved him. sick because he was talented. sick because i can't believe he's gone. >> reporter: police are still investigating this accident, ann. unclear at this point if alcohol was involved. they're still looking into that, as well. ryan's family has flown into town from places like ohio and florida to plan his funeral. too upset to speak, of course, but they released this statement to nbc news. we are devastated by the loss. ryan will be greatly missed, but he will forever remain in our hearts. ann? >> jeff rossen this morning, thanks. it is now 7:18. once again, here's matt. >> ann, thank you. we go to south africa now where michelle obama is kicking off her first major solo overseas trip as first lady. she's brought along her daughters and her mother. nbc's kristen welker is in johannesburg with the latest on this. good morning to you.

rmp good morning. we have learned that the first daily michelle obama met with the former president of the south africa nelson mandela. the first time they have met and while details are still trickling in, this is no doubt a monumental start to this trip. a historic moment captured for the world as michelle obama and nelson mandela meet for the first time. her daughters also share the moment. monday night, they arrived accompanied by mrs. obama's mother, her niece and nephew. they got a very warm welcome, malia and sasha given african blankets to guard them from south africa's winter chill. the first daughters have been abroad before, earlier this year they accompanied the president to brazil, met the queen at buckingham palace but this might be their greatest to r esest fo world stage. >> they're celebrities. it will be nice to see the first

smoke coming from the roof attic area. the fire quickly grew and other agencies were called in to help. the red cross not helping out because all of the displaced members, they have a place to go sue that is good news. the damage is in the front part of the house, upstairs ex10 sifr. one firefighter suffered burns. he has been treated and released so better news there. the cause of this is still undetermined. there are some reports that the fire may have started in the laundry room. we're waiting to find out more about that. streets in the area still blocked off. for a look at the commute we'll throw it over to mike. >> no official statement but as you pointed out, 11th, 12th, san antonio and san fernando around the house so we're going to mark that in the area. we have an accident northbound

to suddenly cancel proceedings on monday afternoon. >> also this morning, a mother accused of crossing the line because her son did not make a legal league team. police she she stalked and made harassing letters to an official. la toya jackson is here. she has a new book out. in that claim, she says her brother michael believed that someone would kill him. we're going to talk to la toya about that and other subjects coming up. but let's begin this half hour with the new developments at the casey anthony murder trial. kerry sanders has been covering it from the beginning. kerry, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. the judge is mindful, he has 12 jurors and 5 alternates cut off from their families now for 30 days. sequestered here in orlando, 100 miles from their homes in st. petersburg. these delays, the judge believes, were avoidable but for

the petty personal conflicts between the lawyers on both sides of the case. casey anthony stands accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter caylee. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: but an undercurrent of ill feelings between defense attorney jose baez and prosecutor jeff ashton brought the entire case to a halt monday. >> all of this, folks, is going to stop. >> reporter: the judge says the petty bickering in court has come as lawyers on both sides beating the system. >> yes, there have been gamesmanship in this particular case. and it is quite evident there is a friction between attorneys. >> reporter: the judge says it's clear the defense withheld what expert witnesses would say to discredit the state's case. a violation of his long-standing court order. >> i just received a transcript of the deposition. >> reporter: and the state has

failed to sit down with some defense experts and take their depositions as required by court order. one showed up unannounced at the prosecutor's office just this past week. on saturday. >> he was turned away. specifically by mr. ashton, not by an associate, not by a secretary, mr. ashton told him to go away. >> reporter: how much do these lawyers dislike each other? >> and these are really minor issues. >> reporter: minor mocks prosecutor jeff ashton? casey anthony sat trans fixed on the back and forth as her lawyer was sidelining her experts. >> he should not be allowed to comfore forth not even at the lefbth hour, at the strike of 12:00 and decide, okay, now i want to utilize something, and do it in a manner that is -- i

don't want to use the word disingenuo disingenuous, but to do it in a manner that is unreasonable. >> reporter: judge perry said he is keenly aware that case law discourages punishes the lawyers now because there is but one immediate goal, a fair trial for casey anthony. >> it frowns upon that because you punish the defendant. >> reporter: the judge warned the issues here could lead to a mistrial, forcing him to start this all over again, going back to ground zero. but for the moment, he says, he will move forward with testimony. matt? >> kerry sanders in orlando. thank you. savannah guthrie is "today's" legal correspondent. good morning to you. this judge has had enough. he's told both lawyers that. the prosecution and defense, under what circumstances would he take the extraordinary step of declaring a mistrial. >> you just said it. it would have to be extraordinary. especially as hard as it was to find this jury all of the way

from st. petersburg. the typical situation, something happens in front of the jury. some kind of prejudice to the defendant that cannot be undone. as nasty and contentious as these fights over discovery and witnesses have been, it's all taking place outside of the presence of the jury. >> by the way, the jury was not in the room for what we just heard. >> no. and for most of the bickering between the lawyers the jurors weren't there. >> let me ask a bizarre question, i think it's bizarre. can you think of any circumstances under which the we defense, for example, might be angling for a mistrial, something that maybe has been in testimony that they would love a redo on? >> well, i don't think there's any question that there's been some things in this trial that jose baez the lawyer would want a do over on. however, if he were trying to get a mistrial, number un, that would be unethical. number two, i might note in most retrials the prosecution tends to end. >> bad strategy all around.

the tension between these two lawyer is always present or often present in a court of law. there's a legal cat and mouse game that goes on between prosecution and the defense. do you think, though, based on the high profile nature of this case that the television cameras are there and that both of these gentlemen and teams might feel as if a case like this could make or break a career, that the tension has been amped up? >> i'm torn answering a question like this because i want to say the cameras make no difference and the lawyers forget that they're there. but, look, in my trial the tensions are very high. these lawyers are not just working a long day in the courtroom, they're going back to their offices working all night, working through the weekend, the tensions are high, death penalty case, inexperienced defense lawyer. now add millions of people watching and three television cameras? yeah, i say it has an affect. >> by the way, the same dynamic when you talk about the judge, judge perry as well. how do you think he's fairing? >> it's clear that this judge wanted to set a tone early on that he is going to run a very

tight ship. he's like a swiss train who starts on time. and that's another reason this irritates him so much. he's now lost, what, a whole day that the jurors are sitting in their hotel rooms. >> sequestered 100 miles from home, five weeks now. >> with all of their calls monitored, even what movies they want to watch has to be approved by the judge. most judges particularly in high profile cases don't want to waste their time. this irritates him and, in my experience, any judge who gets two lawyers before them bickering over things they should be able to settle for themselves is not a happy judge. >> savannah, thanks so much. 37 after the hour. let's get a check of the weather from al. >> narrator: today's weather is brought to you by chevy. every model is backed by 100,000 mile, five-year power train limited warranty. >> good morning. we have a lot of nice folks.

back now at 7:42. this morning on "today's" money, prepaid credit cards. according to federal reserve, they used to make $65 billion worth of transactions in 2010. that's up 35% from 2009. one of the pros and the cons and are they a good idea for you? jean is here today. good morning. >> good morning. >> why the growing trend with these prepaid cards? >> two things. we have a very large unbanked population in the united states. people who don't have a banking relationship. for them, prepaid cards are cheaper than using check cashing services. also a lot of consumers got into trouble with credit so they're steering clear. we also have the bank's nudging us in the direction of these cards because at the end of the

july a new law goes into effect that limits the amount of nonby they can make on debit transactions. >> the idea of prepaid credit cards are pretty much as they sound. you basically pay in advance and you avoid the risk of getting into debt later. there are pros and cons. starting with the pros, you say there is no approval process. >> right. you don't have to have a credit history. these are a good option for a younger student, a college student as well as the unbanked people. >> obviously you can't get into debt unless you buy one that's too big, i guess. >> you can't get into debt at all because you are putting your own money on these cards. then it's gone, it's gone. >> it helps with budgeting. >> it does. if you want to go on vacation and you want to limit the amount of money you can spend, again, unless you reload it, this is going to limit you. >> the biggest benefit of all, no interest in no interest. you're not paying that. on the flip side, there are other charges and we should talk about that. >> the cons. you don't build credit.

>> if you want to qualify for a mortgagor car loan or rent an apartment, you need a credit history. this is not going to accomplish that for you. >> most people don't raize they are not accepted everywhere you want to shop. >> right. and here we talk to the network branded prepaid card association. they say if you've got a card with a logo on it like mastercard, american express, they will be accepted where those cards are accepted but you've got to be sure you know what you're carrying. >> you say there are less consumer protections. for what? >> for fraud. and if you've got that logo you are going to be covered for the same things that network is covered for typically, but if you have an unbranded card you've got to watch it. >> if somebody steals your card and use it, then you're not protected? >> right. we're used to talking about zero liability protection on our visas and our mastercards. and in the case of these cards, if you don't have the little logo you've got to watch out. >> the flip side of not having interest is that there are higher fees associated? >> right. this is the big con. again, the fees vary all over the map.

not the case here. one mom was so upset that her son didn't make the team police say she fired off a bunch of nasty lettering threatening a little league official and his family, even accusing the man of child abuse. went h when her son didn't make this team, police say janet struck out. the 44-year-old long island mother allegedly threatened the legal league official she held responsible for her son's fate. i know where your wife works, she allegedly works. i know where your daughter goes to school and your son's normal everyday routine. and, according to police, it didn't end there. >> just tell your wife and kids to watch themselves, especially at night. i don't care what it takes. i'm going to make your life and your family's life a living hell. these are not just words or empty threats. >> reporter: arrested wednesday night she was charged with stalking, aggravated harassment, falsely reporting an incident

and endangering the welfare of the child. in the letters she addressed the little league official's school age son writing, if something terrible happens to your dad or mom or your sister, you can blame your dad for not taking these threats seriously. in another sent to the school afof the official's kids, she accused him of physical and verbal abuse. it was dismissed. >> she's regretful that she's been placed under arrest, but obviously she feels strongly that her family's been wronged. >> reporter: on the field last night the east meadows mustangs played ball but it really hit home. >> there's nothing justifiable to behave that way. >> reporter: parental bad behavior in youth sports is nothing new, where tempers can boil over in the heat of the moment. but if true these allegations are particularly troubling says

psychiatrist. >> these are very thought through, premeditated, elongated process that went on. and in a way i find that to be more disturbing. >> reporter: outside of the home last night, attorney spoke on behalf of his client. >> she's a pta mom, dad's been involved in coaching and volunteering for many years. and a variety of different capacities. and so the allegations are shocking, to say the least. >> reporter: yeah, they are shocking allegations. we did speak to chiauzzi's attorney late yesterday. he says she is not guilty. but, matt, she is due back in court again tomorrow. >> bizarre. peter alexander in new york for us on this story. parents do get way, way too involved and carried away. i have a son in legal league and i try not to get that carried away even when his ace hardware team won their little league championship on saturday morning, which they just happened to do.

be talking about what's in it. >> sure. >> you wrote, michael who confided in me years earlier that he feared assassination by those who wanted to steal his valuable publishing catalog and estate. you quote michael as saying, i'm even afraid to walk around in my own yard because i'm afraid they're going to kill me. i could never perform again because i know they're going to kill me. do you know who he's referring to? >> yes, he told me exactly who he was referring to. he was terrified. he was terrified of the fact that he had this catalog and he knew they wanted it. that catalog. >> catalog of music. >> his publishing which he owned over -- i think it was 750,000 songs just alone. so he owned everybody's publishing -- >> who did he think wanted to kill him to gain control of that catalog? >> women, everybody that surrounded that, that was involved in that. and he would speak about it. and he was very afraid. he said it was just a matter of time. he knew it was going to happen. when he first told me i was, michael, come on that can't be

true. i didn't truly understand it in the beginning. but the more he explained it, the more i understood. not only did he tell me. he told my mother as well. >> one of the things that struck me. he said he was afraid to even perform yet we know at the time of his death he was rehearsing for a major tour over seas. >> that's right. >> what was the problem? he apparently had lost that fear. >> no, what it was, he was in a catch-22 where he knew that he had to perform and he had the perform ten dates because he was given so much. okay. i'll do this and only this. only the ten dates and that's it. >> so all the attention being paid to dr. conrad murray for the death of michael, you say he is the fall guy for a much larger plot. you write, quote, i decided to investigate michael's death and go public with what i found with the hope of getting justice for michael by identifying those who really killed him. and yet in the book, la toya, i couldn't find anywhere where you actually named someone or give proof of anyone actually killing michael. >> but when you read the book and you read between the lines

and you understand, you will know what exactly michael led you to that, to what was going to happen. >> lead me to it. >> when you read the book you understand it completely. once you read it, you will understand it. and i have to say that i was not there when he was actually murdered. however -- >> but you do believe that it was not dr. conrad murray responsible for his death that someone actually murdered your brother? >> i believe that dr. murray was definitely the fall guy. i think that they need to invest gate this a bit more. go deeper into it. >> this idea of yours, and this belief of yours, has put you at odds with other family members. >> not at odds. >> you write in the book how the family always came together, for example, at the trial of michael. >> of course. >> -- earlier in 2003. but they're in the on page you in this. >> in the beginning they were, oh, no, he's passed, let him lie to rest. you can't not let that be because his children thanks need to know what happened, they want

to know what happened to their father. they were there. they understand. >> have you gone to the police now with information that you have uncovered in your own investigation? are they now looking in a different area? >> in the beginning i was with the detectives right there with them and i wanted the surveillance camera, i want to no everything and everyone who came in and out of that house. all of a sudden that's eradic e eradicat eradicated. they erase it but just the first three or four minutes there. >> on the subject of the trial of the situation the brother found himself in on two separate occasions with accusations of molestation. you held a news conference, i think it was in tel aviv in 1993, and you said pretty important things. quote, i can no longer be a silent collaborator of these crimes against small innocent children. >> absolutely. >> you now say that you were forced to say that by your former husband jack gordon. how could he force you to say something so damning about your brother? >> matt, when you're in a relationship when you're being abused and very controlling, he

controlled everything i did, everything that went on in my life. he was working with a group of people that were working with my brother at the time, which, in fact, i didn't know. i wasn't privy to that. i wasn't privy to watch television. i knew nothing that was going on. when i went on television and said my brother was wonderful, he would never do anything like that. he hated that. the next day, you get on. went to tel aviv. he said i was going on vacation. i thought there was an award show. we drove up, all those cameras and people there. i didn't know. >> you had a complete change of heart in terms of your brother's situation with molestation. >> never had a change of heart. i always knew he never did that. and that's one thing that michael and i discussed and talk about because i had to speak to him about that. he said, la toya, you don't have to mention that. i know you. i know your heart i know he was making you do this. michael knew more than i thought. he would call me and tell me to get away from him. gordon is going to murder you. what i would want to say he would tell me if i didn't do what we he wanted me to do or

say he was going to kill michael. >> you have also made comments about your father joe molesting you and other forms of child abuse. now you say no other man alive or dead did anything like joseph did for his family and i thank him for that. >> i do. >> is this a contradiction? >> no, it is not. my father did a wonderful job of raising all of us. i have to tell you that when you're young, you see things differently than when you get older. when you get older and you have children and your nieces and nephews, you understand why your father disciplined you the way he did. parents beat their children back then. they don't do that today. if you do it today, you're going to jail. >> but you stand by the comments you made about molestation and child abuse? >> my father is a very wonderful man, matt. i have to tell you something. my father is getting older. i love him with all my heart. michael loved my father at the end of the day. people are showing footage of michael speaking at my father the way he thought many years ago. at the end of michael's life he called my father several times,

doctor, noticed some strange reaks to many foods. >> it's very challenging because we have to obviously prepare special meals for her every time she eats. and we really can't eat out in restaurants unless we pack her food in a cooler. >> reporter: she's not alone. the study at children's memorial hospital in chicago surveyed families of more than 40,000 children aged 17 and younger. it found that 8% of children, that's one in 12, had food allergies. and more than a third of the kids with allergies had experienced serious reactions. >> we have to be aware that severe reactions can occur and this study shows for the first time that the prevalence of severe reactions was rather high. >> reporter: according to the study the most common allergies were to peanuts, followed by milk and shellfish. but allergies to all kinds of foods appear to be increasing and doctors are most fied as to why. the leading theory is that kids are not, posed to certain foods

as early in life as they used to be. for audrey, it reveals food news. she's not allergic to shrimp. the conclusion? food allergies are wide spread and increasing. but they require an accurate diagnosis, so parents can be aware of those foods that present the greatest risk. for "today," nbc news, new york. >> dr. nancy snyderman is nbc's chief medical contributor. one in 12, why the rise? >> we're not sure. it may be a combination of things. one, we become germaphobes. and instead of going the old way of introducing foods one at a time, breast milk or formula, and then vegetables and then rice cereal and then fruits we throw a complex foods at children too early. it may be that their immune systems are hyper reactive so

that when they get foods later in life, their immune system goes, wait, this looks like it's foreign to me. it overreacts and then children come down with these symptoms of food reaction. >> we shouldn't be probably introducing foods, we don't know that that's the cause, but we shouldn't be introducing complex foods until at least 1? >> follow your pediatrician's advice and introduce foods according to a routine schedule in infancy. >> what symptoms should parents be looking for? >> classic. >> how early? >> usually have to do with itching or tingling on the roof of the mouth. sometimes difficulty swallowing. any time a child says, mom, i feel like my throat is swelling up or having difficulty breathing. wheezing, anything you see on this list, you call your pediatrician. the one thing i don't want parents to do is say, well, i think johnny or susie reacted to shellfish last week. let's try it again today to see. you don't want to do that. there are ways to challenge with

♪ back now at 8:35. kick start your life today with marlo thomas. the author and actress is back to help another woman in need in the next phase of her life. marlo, good morning. >> good morning. we're really get there the this week. on monday we met a mom who didn't discover her passion until she was an empty nestor. this morning we're going to introduce you to a woman who left the workforce to stay at home and raise her children. but when her marriage broke up, everything changed.

>> i had my whole life sort of planned out in front of me. i could see the road ahead. all of a sudden my life turned sharp, you know, with the divorce. >> reporter: tracey shapiro was married for 15 years. she was educated and philips acade academy in new hampshire and she excelled during the early years of her career. >> they actually had three people there working in the payroll department and they saw how much i could handle and i ended up doing the whole job myself. >> wow. but like many women, tracey left the workforce to concentrate on raising her family. >> how did it feel to stop working? >> i got pregnant with twins. and i thought financially that's not really going to be worth it to put them in day care the whole time. one thing after another, you end up with five children. but my life was great. >> now tracey's divorce has changed her outlook. >> one of my goals is to be as financially independent as i can be. >> reporter: in the essay tracey sent to us here at "today" we

could tell that getting a job would mean much more to her than just a paycheck. you said, i feel very blessed that my children are happy and have adjusted to divorce very well. i have created a new home that is filled with love for them but i feel like something is missing. what do you think is missing? >> something for me. you know, i've spent all this time for everybody else. i just would like something of my own. >> reporter: tracey has spent the last nine months looking for work. >> how is that going? >> it's been tough. it's hard to try to figure out how you're going to make yours stand out. there's a lot of people out there that need jobs. >> reporter: so we paired tracye up with carol of ivorylaunch.com to kick start her employment search. >> it's very powerful to show that you had these increasingly senior positions at the same company. >> i loved working before. >> uh-huh. >> i know that i will love it again. it's that scary step of, you know, changing your life again. >> change is scary.

>> yeah. >> tracey shapiro is here along with carol. she is the co-author of "back on the career track, a guide for stay-at-home moms who want to return to work" and cofounder of irelaunch.com. tracey, first of all, what has helped you most of all get over that scary fear? you know, the things you just said on tape are things that i think many women listening this morning can completely identify with. >> yeah. it's been a tough go for me, but meeting with carol has been really exciting and eye opening. it's allowed me to change my perspective a little bit. you know, she's offered a lot of guidance and sound advice. so it's made me feel more positive about the possibilities. >> carol, let's talk about that advice. you have some basic tips. don't downplay. >> right. >> that's something that tracey was guilty of before.

>> that's one of the things i saw right away with tracey. she tended to not recognize or downplay her accomplishments. so tracey does sot tax preparation washing on the side and the way she got into this was that she prepared her own complicated tax returns, brought them to h&r block to get checked and they said they were perfect. and then they offered her a job on the spot. and she declined that. but that is resume material. so that's a perfect example of tracey just telling that in a throw-away conversation without realizing that's an accomplishment. >> fundamental thing we women don't always recognize our worth, what we can actually do. you also say make sure you're represented well on the internet. that's key. >> that's right. one of the first things i did when i hear her name is i went online to see if she had a profile on linked in which she did not and we are working on that. it's important for people who are starting out after being at home to set up an online profile. >> okay. also you say target very specifically people who can help

you and meet them. what are you talking about? just going out and calling them, picking up the phone, what? what do you do? >> you hear a lot of advice out there about going to networking events, professional conferences. but we say take it a step further. identify people in your local business community who are working in your field, who might even have a job that you aspire to, and reach out to them, ask them if you can go in their office and meet for 20 minutes and hear about their career advancement, hear about changes in the industry. over the last ten years, however long you've been out. >> people love to talk about how they got to where they are. i can see how she's so helpful. she's helpful to me. you also say, marlo, no matter how old you, are don't give up on the idea of interning. >> that's great because the first step always to any job is to get your foot in the door. you can learn the trade. and show how hard you can work and that you're indispensable. i don't care how much money you can make in a job there is nothing that buys experience. now, you have to have a little

money, cushion, to allow yourself to do that. but it's a great way to get? >> it is tough whenoff got the kids though. i mean, is that the biggest fear is sort of figuring out how do i keep my kids taken care of. >> how to balance it all. that is tough. that whole transition from going from a stay-at-home mom to a working mom can be a tough go mentally for you. so that's the tough part. >> is there anything you can say to tracey to help her build her confidence? >> i'm really excited about working with tracey. she has got exactly the right attitude. she's really motivated to move forward. she's absolutely relentless about going after this goal which is a quality you must have when returning to work. i want to invite her to come to our irelaunch return to work conference in new york city. that's going to help build your confidence. i'm also going to be your personal relaunch buddy. i'm going to work with you until you get hired.

behind the popular me len anymore trilogy, a man who died in 2004 before he was able to see the success of his books like "the girl with the dragon tattoo." the millennium trilogy is a global publishing phenomenon. the books have broken record since their first printing. >> his first novel "the girl with the dragon tattoo" became the first million copy selling e book. steve larson right now is one of the best-selling e book authors of all time. last year we were selling steve larson book every second. 550,000 copies a week. >> reporter: in sweden the books became hugely successful films, grossing over $100 million and hollywood took notice. the american remake of "the girl with the dragon tattoo" hits theaters in december. steve larrson died unexpectedly

in 2004 at the age of 50 were any of the books were published. she lived with larrson for 30 years. he left no will and his estate estimated at $40 million went to his father and brother, who says he was estranged. eva has not seen one penny from any of steve's book sales if resulting family feud is as epic as his thrillers. fueling the controversy larrson reportedly left behind a 40 book on his laptop. >> the most basic question about the fourth book is, does it exist, what format is it in, who owns the rights to it. the hope is that at some point these issues will all be sorted out and book four will see the light of day because i know that leaders around the world would welcome it. >> eva gabrielle is with us this

morning, her new book is called "there are things i want you to know about stieg larsson and me." stieg larsson, long-time companion died in 2004. you are just now writing this book. why did you wait? >> i didn't plan to write a look at all. i started to compile my handwritten diaries after stieg died just myself and it grew from there. it takes time because i work full time in another job, so i'm not -- i'm not a professional author in that case full time. >> we just saw an amazing success of this trilogy. stieg larsson is not a rich man in life but $40 million after his death. and yet you say you have not seen one penny of this. why is that? >> the swedish law is not really up to date. no cohas been tants will receive anything after divorce or when a partner dies so you're left

dispossessed, you should say. >> no common law marriage like in the u.s. if you live with someone for a long time you are treated as a wife. >> no, i don't have we don't have that. we also don't have the possibility to go to court and let the court decide if theris a reasonable outcome. tragic. it takes time. >> a lot of people wonder, 30 years. why not marry? >> i think i explain that in the book. we couldn't for security reasons. stieg was writing at the extreme right wing and we had to keep him stay single in the public records so they wouldn't find his home address. >> because the home address was under your name and if you had been married it would have been revealed. >> just a precaution, yeah. >> we reached out to stieg larsson's father and brother and they said they offered you a seton board of the company that controls his estate. let me read this statement. quote, we have wanted to share

income from stieg's works as well as cooperate with eva in handling the rights. we have, however, been driven unhappily to the conclusion that eva is not interested in working with us, or in having any contact with us. we find that both very sad, unnecessary, and unproductive. have you turned down their offers and why? >> they actually didn't come with any offers until hollywood wanted to sign contracts to do a new film. so they published an offer in the swedish media in november of 2009. and they didn't come up with any meeting or offers with me and my lawyer until a year ago. >> even if late, was it not sufficient? >> no, we didn't think so because i -- i -- the money wasn't a gift. the money they offered. it was to -- a settlement offer. me having no legal power or financial power on the board, i would just feel like a hostage.

i could be voted downey time. i wanted to go on with my life and finish my book instead. >> let me ask you about this fourth book. you say you've seen 200 pages of an unfinished book. >> i estimate there's 200 pages based on how far i know that stieg was in the process in late august. and then he died just two months later. >> who else has seen it? >> nobody. >> okay. >> i'm sure of that. i'm also sure that it was never printed out because it was just on a back burner, so to say. he was doing other things at that time. >> do you think it should be published? >> i think it's far from finished and it's 200 pages, there are 400 to go. and i'm not sure that any author would like to have his works and characters being taken over by ghost writers. >> eva, it's good to shear your story. thank you. once again, the book is called "there are things i want you to know about stieg larsson "" and

he admitted last week to enga engaging in online sexual relationships with several women. we'll have more on this story coming up. on the first full day of the solo trip to africa first lady michelle obama met with former south african president mandela. a private unannounced visit. mrs. obama arrived in south africa last night along with her daughters and her mother. she's also touring mandela's foundation today. the supreme court knocked down a class-action lawsuit against walmart, the justices were split 5-4 ruling that the women's potential claims were too different to be bundled into a single lawsuit. the two women who initiated the lawsuit say they'll continue to advance their case. several tornadoes ripped through nebraska and one was caught on video tearing across train tracks, knocking several cars around like toys. it then barrelled across the road and took down power lines, too. no serious injuries were reported. president obama will announce tomorrow his plans for

the first phase of a drawdown of u.s. troops from afghanistan. he's expected to start bringing troops home next month and then to hand over power to the afghans fully by 2014. new york state is the focal point today in the national debate over gay marriage. protesters from both sides gathered at the state capitol on monday expecting a final vote on legalizing same-sex marriage. however, lawmakers failed to resolve the issue, apparently hung up on exemptions for religious groups. well, a tennessee bear fought the law and the bear won. although not without a few scrapes and bruises. look as a tennessee police cruiser slammed into a black bear cub and caught the collision on the dash cam. the bear took a bump to the bottom and scampered off the road and perhaps learning a lesson to stay away from the traffic. wow. in ka coma, washington, crystal cook got a big surprise when the waiter was her boyfriend home early from

dilemmas. tackling questions about breakfast and whether food can pack on the pounds. joy, good to see you. >> good morning, al. >> start off with skype. go to brooklyn, new york. we've got the beautiful erin from book lynn. erin, good morning. >> good morning. hi, al. hi, joy. great to be here. >> thank you. what's your question? >> well, my question is, as you can see i'm in my office and my co-workers and i are just about to go out on a morning coffee run. we've been having a debate, what has more caffeine, a shot of espresso or a cup of coffee? now, we want to make the healthiest choice. joy, what do you recommend? >> i think joy has already had a little caffeine. >> so you may be surprised by this. even though espresso has a reputation for giving us a huge jolt, a cup of coffee actually has more caffeine than a small serving of espresso. this is what people get tripped up. when you compare ounce to ounce, espresso has significantly more caffeine. that's because when we brew it we useless water so it's super

concentrated in caffeine. an ounce of espresso has between 40 to 70 milligrams of caffeine and there's only a measly 15 milligrams of caffeine in an ounce of standard drip coffee. but, we drink at least an eight-ounce cup of coffee. so the caffeine adds up and clocks in between 100 to 150 milligrams. so to settle your debate, a cup of coffee is a winner. >> we're going out for a coffee break. >> if you have a double shot of espresso though, it's a tie. >> all right. >> thank you. wow. that's good to know. thank you, joy. i appreciate that. >> bye pooi. >> your pocket book, too because the espresso is more expensive. >> right. >> lauren in dallas, texas. she's on the phone and she has a question about breakfast. >> hi, guys. how are you? >> great. >> good. i know that eating a protein rich breakfast is crucial for maintaining my recent weight loss of 35 pounds. >> congratulations. >> yeah. that's great. >> i am getting so bored with

eggs and egg substitute. are cereals and oatmeals okay because they had added sugar and what is a really good breakfast to eat other than just eggs? >> cereal and oatmeal are perfectly fine. don't be afraid of a little bit of sugar. if you're buying ready made brand shs just look at the label and make sure there's no more than eight grams of sugar per serving. and if you're starting with plain and adding your own sugar, one to two teaspoons. again, perfectly fine. but there are so many fabulous, tasty, healthy, non-egg protein-rich breakfast ideas. i want you to get creative with things like part skim ricotta cheese, nonfat greek yogurt is packed with protein. also you can add a scoop of protein powder into your cereal or your oatmeal or into any fruit smoothie. you can make a classic blt for breakfast using canadian or turkey bacon. that's not great idea.

>> sauce ssagsausage. >> that's delicious. i sprinkle cinnamon on to my cottage cheese and top it on apple slices. those ideas are going to keep you feeling full for hours after you eat. and congratulations on the weight loss. >> thank you. >> okay. have a great day. >> i eat a lot of fruit if the summer. is there such a thing as too much fruit? >> it pain mess to say this, yes. >> is it the kind of fruit? >> fruit in general. >> just fruit. >> fruit provides 100% good for you calories. but it's denser in calories than the nonstarchy vegetables. so i give the nonstarchy venlgables a limited billing. broccoli and cauliflower and lettuce and spinach but fruit calories will add up. for people who are watching their weight or who have diabetes my advice is to have no more than three servings of

michael jackson. was all the stuff or majority all fabricated? >> no. a lot of things in that book was with my ex-husband/ex-manager jack gordon which kathie is aware of. you have to say this. it was way wanted to write in that book. yes, i have a lovely father. my father did discipline us. we did get spanked. people did that back then. today they don't. today this book is very interesting because it goes to show you how one person can take control of your life, take your self-worth away from you, take your self-esteem and give you ultimatums. if you don't do this, you don't say that, i'm going to kill your brother. i believed him because the people he hung around, the circle of people he knew -- >> the mob. >> we spent a lot of time on mulberry street when i was in new york. after i left there were seven or

eight fbi guys to come visit me. >> you make shocking allegations in this book. the headline people will take away is a quote here, "latoya they want my music catalog, they want my publishing. they'll do whatever it takes to get it. they are going to kill me." did michael jackson believe somebody out there was going to kill him? and do you believe somebody out there actually did? >> first of all, when michael first told me this, i was dumbfounded. you're michael jackson. who in the world is going to do this? >> you don't name names in the book. >> he was adamant about what was going to happen. his catalog was important. it was his publishing. it was generating $1 billion. just that alone, he owned half of that with another company sony. he was terrified of his life. i told me this. he told my mother. he was fearful. i started listening to him. my brother was a very happy-go-lucky guy. he loved to have fun.

he loved life. he loved children. michael changed. he was so worried and nervous about his life. >> you said you were investigating his death. >> yes. >> here is the headline. you believe somebody killed your brother. >> absolutely. >> who do you think? >> you don't think it was conrad murray? >> i believe he was the fall guy. there are much more people behind them. michael told me the people behind him that wanted his catalog. they positioned in his life during the last names. >> why didn't you write names? >> the people he got rid out of his life came back. these are the people -- you have to follow the money trail. they knew what he was worth. >> it leads to individuals and why didn't you name the individuals i guess is what we are asking? >> this goes deeply into detail. you will see and you will understand and you will know this is who did it to michael jackson. >> you don't name names. >> it's right there you will knoblauch and white.
