captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to "today" on this thursday morning, i'm ann curry, look who's back? >> matt lauer back from a shoot that didn't happen. meanwhile, we're following breaking news, the arrest of whitey bulger, on the ten most wanted list for the alleged role in 19 murders. the mob boss managed to elude the authorities for 16 years. the manhunt came to a sudden end when the 81-year-old was taken into custody in southern california. the government had just launched a new campaign to find him earlier this week. we'll get the latest on this straight ahead. also ahead, prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty if casey anthony is found guilty of murdering her daughter caylee but that may have gotten more

difficult after a federal judge ruled that the method used in florida to impose a death sentence is unconstitutional. we'll explain that. also, a rant, did you hear about this? caught on open microphone led to a suspension for a pilot of a major airline. he was using offensive slurs, talking about his own crew and we'll get more about that coming up. let's begin with the breaking news the overnight arrest of mob boss james whitey bulger and nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the details on that. good morning to you. >> good morning, whitey bulger will be finally where the fbi wants him later today in court. he was arrested while living in an apartment overlooking the pacific ocean. he's accused of committing murders and a host of other crimes, many of them while actings barrow one of the fbi's 10 most

wanted, james white where bulger spent two decades on the land. but when they caught up with the crime boss late wednesday he did not put up a fight. the ailing 81-year-old and his girlfriend were arrested at this apartment complex in santa monica. >> we looked to publicize worldwide. >> he has been a fugitive since 1995 when fbi agents in boston were preparing to arrest him in connection with at least 19 murders and on charges of racket te racketeering in the '70s and '80s. he was the inspiration for jack nicholson's scatter in "the departed." from all over the world tips came in from people who claimed to have seen bulger and greig. she is said to have had plastic surgery several times but nothing panned out. two days ago they began a new television blitz aimed at greig. this

morning authorities say a tip from someone who saw those ads led to the arrests. >> bulger now a graying senior citizen got the nickname whitey for the color of a strand of his hair. now the fbi has the task of deciding whether someone will get the $2 million reward offered for information lead to go his arrest. matt? >> pete williams in washington. thanks as always. here's ann. >> matt, thanks. now to the emergency evacuations orders in north dakota where record flooding is expected to deal a damaging blow to that city in the coming days. we have kevin tibbles in this morning. kevin, good morning. >> reporter: hey, ann. well, they're describing it simply as a wall of water that is set to swamp this city. while they're doing everything that they can, there is very little the city can do to actually stop it. for residents of minot, the sound of sirens signaled the time to head for higher ground.

>> this is a very sad time for the city. >> we're well-known. >> it forced 11,000 residents, a quarter of the city's population, from their homes. as the national guard worked to shore up weakened dikes. >> think about your own home, how you would feel if you knew this was coming down and would wipe you out. >> this city is bracing for the worst flooding in more than 120 years. water levels this time around are predicted to rise four or five feet above the record set way back in 1881. brother and sister harland and carmen moved their possessions out of the family home, trying to put it all in perspective. #. >> we're going to joplin, missouri or alabama. we don't have to take care of the injured or the dead. we didn't lose anybody hopefully. >> yeah. >> also forced to move all the

from afghanistan. in a primetime address last night, the president vowed to bring 33,000 troops home by the end of next summer. chuck todd is at the white house with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. in the end the president went with the most aggressive compromise withdrawal plan he could get commanders at the pent gone to sign off on. what it means, the first significant troop withdraw from afghanistan since the war began. >> we take comfort in knowing the tide of war is receding. >> reporter: it was a sober sounding president, not a triumphant one. >> we're starting this drawdown from position of strength. al qaeda is under more pressure than at any time since 9/11. we have inflicted serious losses on the taliban and taken a number of its strongholds. >> here's how the plan breaks down. of the nearly 100,000

troops fighting approximately 10,000 of the surge forces will come home by the end of this calendar year. another 20,000 troops will be withdrawn by september of next year. as for the remaining 70,000, the timeline for their withdraw in 2013 and 2014 could be decided next may when leaders of nato gathered in president obama's hometown of chicago. >> this is the beginning, not the end of our effort to wind down this war. we'll have to do the hard work of keeping the gains we have made. >> while acknowledging the killing he was careful not to underestimate al qaeda. >> al qaeda remains dangerous. but we have put al qaeda on a path to defeat. >> he also used part of his speech to defend the decision to get involved in libya.

>> we must chart a more centered course. we don't have to choose between standing idly by or acting on our own. instead, we must rally international action which we're doing in libya where we do not have a single soldier on the ground. >> acknowledging economic anxiety gripping the nation the president said what many politicians in congress and running for president have suggested for weeks. >> america, it is time to focus on nation building here at home. >> yeah. reaction on capitol hill was quite muted. somehow odd frankly. if you put it together you come up with reluctant agreement, wishing there was more troops coming home or wishing the timeline had been slower. the most critical of minnesota governor tim pawlenty. >> thanks very much. what does the president's message say about the current mood of the nation?

tom pwrbrokaw is with us this morning. >> he had to strike a lot of balances. the military equation, obviously it is important to talk about the effect of all of this on the economy. and then with 2012 coming up there's a big a little bit appearance as well. >> he's basically going to bring home 33,000 of the so-called surge troops by the end of next summer. he was quick to point out the rest won't be put out until 2014. the job is not completely done. >> there will be 70,000 troops in 2013. but after 11 years it is time for the afghanistan security forces to take responsibility for their own country. the afghan defense minister said we think this is a good plan. i was told by white house people that admiral mullen and secretary gates signed off on this. the civilian piece of it does run the army after all. obviously there were some pushback on the part of the military. but they lost that. >> there was clearly a political

side to this speech. he talked about that. it's time to do some nation building here at home. he has seen the figures that you and i have seen. 40% of the american people feel they're worse off today than when president obama took office two years ago. they know this war is costing $10 billion every month. did he say the right thing to those people? >> well, i think there's a great, great eagerness on the part of everyone to try to get this economy kick started. bernanke said yesterday the head winds are stronger than we would like to see them. we're in what a lot of people would call a soft patch. this is the second wave of a recession. it is always about the economy. stupid when you're going into an election year. and the president is next year with the numbers not getting better faster for him. but at the same time people saying we would like more cuts and cutting back. >> let's talk about these other numbers. some of the republicans who took

office a year ago like scott walker, rick scott in florida, john kasich of ohio, they went into messages. now a year later you look at their approval ratings and they're falling. is this buyers remorse? >> it's not buyers remorse. it's a conondrum. people say we want to get government under control but do it to someone else. >> don't cut things important to me. >> don't be in my backyard. we'll have that debate big time next year. you start to play out with a medicare debate. democrats jumped all over that. some of the republicans began to peel back from that. they're going to try to find more of a middle ground. but that's where we are. >> the big question heats up over raising the debt ceiling. grover norquist, why is he important? >> americans for tax reforms.

no new taxes. most of the republican senators as well. when they talk about revenue enhancement, whether it's applying, for example, the killing of the ethanol tax to the deficit, he fights that. he has an enormous amount of power. jim bakker has come up with a plan because he doesn't think they're going to get a big deal before the end of the summer. he said why not extend the debt limit for six months until next year and build in spending benchmarks that you can get to and everyone can agree on that. the idea that we're going to get something really big unlikely. >> we spoke to a high-ranking member of the republican party who said this is done by the fourth of july because this benefits neither party to be dragged out. >> i think they'll get to something on debt limit. the idea of default is just -- it would be catastrophic quite honestly. how big it's going to be, that's the real question.

they're on high alert for more serious fires. long island police arrested a man in a shooting at a pharmacy. david laugher was led from his home in handcuffs and charged with first degree murder and resisting arrest. his wife was also detained. we'll have much more coming up in a live report. a self-help guru and author has been found guilty of negligently gentlemen homicide in the deaths of three of his followers in a sweat lodge ceremony. he was cleared, though, of the more serious charges. court proceedings next week will determine if james arthur ray will face up to 11 years in prison or no more than probation for the deadly two-hour ceremony. >> pakistan says it has agreed to issue more than 35 visas to cia officers, part of an effort to ease estranged relations between the two countries.

home every since last month since pleading no contest for stealing a necklace. a lot of people thought putting her under house arrest would p t keep her out of trouble, she's able to go out in public, so there's enough evidence of some wrongdoing to haul her back to the judge yet again. >> reporter: lindsay lohan's house party while under house arrest made tabloid headlines, not the punishment the district attorney had in mind. the party, though, is within the terms of her probation, as long as she doesn't drink anything harder than a shirley temple. if there was booze, there's trouble. >> lindsay lohan not getting the message. >> reporter: both tmz and radaron-line shortly after the party, she tested positive for alcohol. it could be another jail-worthy violation. >> her track record on probation has been an abysmal failure. >> she spent far more time in jail for her probation lapses than for her original crime, a

dui conviction in 2007. when she pled no contest to stealing a necklace, she was put in lockup because it was a probation violation. >> she seemed adamant about wanting to get back on track. >> lohan dismissed the idea that there was any booze at her bash. there wasn't a party, it was a barbecue. alcohol is not in my house, it's just not a part of my life, she said. >> she told me she wanted to prove everybody wrong, her partying ways were over. >> she's finding ways to fill her days with like shooting a commercial. >> i found an amazing site with great deals. >> her rare public appearance may not be a victory lap. it's just another trip back to court. >> matt, lohan's publicist had no comment on what's going to happen. it could end one of two ways. the judge could send her back to rehab which hasn't work in the

the murder of four people inside of a new york pharmacy. the alleged gunman's wife was also taken into custody. hear from her straight ahead. a pilot hit a career turbulence as his mic was stuck open as he talked about members of his crew. let's say he used some unflattering and offensive words to describe them. details on that coming up. and more of the special series, anchors abroad. kathie lee and hoda travel to jamaica to join forces with the most popular morning show. we're not sure if we want to see what happened. we'll have that coming for you in a little while. >> that's right. a court case could have an impact on casey anthony's murder trial. kerry sanders is in orlando this morning with the details. kerry, good morning. well, good morning, ann. if casey anthony is convicted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, caylee, prosecutors say they'll ask for the death penalty. but this morning, their plan got a little more complicated.

>> reporter: the state says casey anthony planned her daughter's murder with duct tape and chloroform and killed her so she could live the lifve of a party girl. that heinous crime is why, as they picked the jury, they wanted to know if the jurors could recommend death. >> you understand that ms. anthony receives the death penalty that she will, in fact, die by lethal injection. >> yes, ma'am. >> okay. but federal judge jose martinez ruled florida's death penalty unconstitutional. in his 94-page opinion, he reviewed convicted murderer paul evans' death sentence. the judge concluded because florida's jury only recommends the death penalty that the judges agreed to sentence them. the system is flawed. former u.s. attorney kendall coffey. >> a south florida federal ruling is not binding in the

state court in orlando. her lawyers are going to argue every single point on a ruling that the death penalty law is unconstitutional. >> with florida's death penalty system is in limbo, it's unclear this jury specifically chosen as a death jury would ever be empowered to exercise that option. meanwhile, with 25 days of testimony and ten more to go, the murder case in orlando for now continues on schedule. >> i'm going to ask the defense to give me their best guess of when do you think you'll conclude. >> the defense now six days to the presentation is trying to poke more holes in the state's scientific evidence pointing out what investigators did not find. >> can you tell the ladies and gentlemen of the jury what the results are when you searched. >> my results were all negative. >> and more specifically, was there really evidence of

chloroform? prosecutors alleged casey used duct tape and chloroform to kill her daughter. >> that a reasonable jury can conclude that caylee marie anthony died as a result of poisoning by chloroform. >> but the defense asked did they find any chloroform? >> chloroform was not identified. chloroform was not identified. >> the doll? >> chloroform was not identified in it. >> it's expected as early as today the defense will end its questioning about the state scientific evidence and begin to present its case that caylee was not murdered but rather accidentally drowned in the back yard swimming pool. ann. >> kerry sanders, thank you so much. savannah guthrie, the nbc legal correspondent. good morning to you. what is the possibility this will no longer be a capital offense case against casey anthony with the new ruling.

>> the new ruling affects things but not right away. it's a federal district court ruling, not binding on this state court. but i can foresee a day that there's a higher court ruling that could affect lower court cases like the casey anthony case. so, the judge has a little bit of a decision to make here. he could, on his own, try to comply with the federal ruling, adjust the procedures in the death penalty case, so that if it ever is overturned as unconstitutional at a higher level that this case would hold up on appeal. but the prosecutors may not like that. he may just let it alone, let this death penalty case go forward, and let the chips fall where they may if some day down the road a higher court overturns florida's death penalty in a way that is binding on the state courts. the bottom line is, it's a little bit of a mess. and we can't be sure what will happen. but for today, this case will go forward as a death penalty case. >> mean tctime, the defense presented six forensic experts.

how effective were they on the stand for the defense? >> the defense is doing what i consider to be a classic defense strategy, picking away at the prosecution's evidence. yesterday we had somebody on the stand, seemed to be a credible evidence who said, i tested those air samples inside the trunk of the car, and i can't tell you for sure there was ever a decomposing body in the trunk of the car. you'll remember there was a state prosecution expert who said, i tused these samples and there was a decomposing body. this is one of the situation where is you have duelling experts. the jurors might decide it's a wash. we don't know who to believe. they both seem credible and look to other evidence in the case. if they did on this issue of whether there had been a decomposing body in the trunk, the prosecutors might have the upper hand. there's been all kinds of other evidence. multiple witnesses said there was an unmistakable stench of human decomposition coming from the trunk of the car. >> the defense doesn't seem to

say whether caylee drowned in the pool. is that a mistake? >> i would expect that jurors are hoping to hear some of that. a lot of forensics that the defense is definitely trying to play on what you call the "cs ix" effect, playing on the jurors' desire to see more of the science. for the jurors, that might be the appetizer. they want the meal. they're going to say, we're going to tell you, this was an accident. she drown in the pool. as a practical matter, they're wanting evidence of that. >> the judge wanted to get an idea of how long the defense is going to take. they just got started. why is he pressing them? >> there's been slow-going because of the discovery fights. at last check, it seemed that the defense would go at least through next weekend. the state seems to want to offer a rebuttal case. lit be several days, if not weeks before the case goes to the jury. >> savannah guthrie, thanks so much. a check of the weather with al. thanks so much, ann.

we're back at 8:09 in "today's health," the truth behind weight loss and weight gain. the old motto, everything in moderation may not be the key to a healthy diet after all. today's diet nutrition editor. a "today's" contributor and medical editor for health magazine. this is a big study. harvard university does this. 120,000 people they followed. i think 80% of them were women. they followed them for a long period of time. you like the study. >> like the study. they followed the people for a long time. they got interesting results. >> these were healthy weight

people. they weren't overweight at all when the study started. >> one of the things that jumps out to me is that there's a lot of common sense in what they found. base i can you're going to eat things like potato chips, you're going to gain weight. you going to eat things like yogurt and fruit, you're going to lose weight. is that oversimplifying it. >> we're talking about weight creep. this is invisible weight, 3 1/2 pounds every four years or so. over time, that adds up, a pound a year. but the issue was that they found one serving or so, a big handful of chips, for example, that's enough every day. >> one serving a day over the course of four years. >> could pack on a few pounds. that's invisible. >> you think that's going to surprise people? >> i think people have so much information out there. they don't know what to eat anymore. all these crazy diets going on. if you get a few simple guidelines, they mention four or five foods you should avoid, four or five foods you should stick to. you're going to prevent that 16 to 20-pound weight gain. >> avoid the potato chips and

the french fries. those are the two bad potatoes, okay. soda. >> sweetened drinks. not just soda. juices -- a lot of unnecessary sugars hidden that you don't taste. >> processed meat. >> some of these that you pointed out were no-brainers. when they looked at potatoes, they took a deeper look, regular potato, fiber rich, 100 calor calories, it's a big carrier for fat. we put on cheese, sour cream. this is where the problem comes. >> by the way, many of the foods have things we don't want. transfats, increase your cholesterol. it's a good idea to avoid a lot of these things. >> talk to me about the flip side. we know that even in moderation, this is going to add weight over the long haul. but in moderation this, will help you lose weight in the long haul. >> this makes you a more mindful eater when you're paying attention. they're lower density, that i ear protein rich. but even things like nuts. they're heart healthy, good for healthy eating but they have a lot of calories, so healthy eating doesn't always mean low

calorie meeting, you have to make sure this is a portion, but not this. these things tend to be healthier in general, more fruits and vegetables. >> what's good about the fiber is they make you feel full longer so you're less likely to want to eat again, snack, have higher calorie foods later on. >> a life style component to this, doctor, that i want to talk about. they talked about people who sit and watch a lot of television and people who don't get enough sleep. there's something a lot of people don't stop to consider. >> first the tv, three ways it will make you gain weight. number one, you're sitting on the couch, you're not out moving, you're not going to burn as many calories, people who watch tv snack more when they're watching tv. when they're not, probably the images they're seeing on tv are making them buy more high-calorie foods. >> the sleep side? >> none of us get more sleep unfortunately. if you get between six to eight hours, that's the ideal amount in terms of preventing weight gain. if you get less than six hours, your body has certain hormones

celebration, the birth of the modern olympic games. here's one of the greatest olympians of all time. swimmer michael phelps. you're going to wear some of my gold medals. can i borrow some of yours? >> mine are still locked away in the tight spots. >> they're hidden away? >> i took them out a month or two ago. it was the first time i got a chance to look at them all together. my coach had a bunch of my athens medals for a while. i just got them back. it's good to be able to see all of them at once. >> impressive haul. tell me about olympics. there are events all across the country. like what? >> we have an event in baltimore. being able to have a day like this where we're almost a year out of the olympics and we can celebrate the modern olympics, for me, it's such a huge part of my life. and growing up and watching it and being able to compete in it, you know, i think really it --

every single time the olympics comes around, winter or summer, you can see the picture come together. it's super cool. >> the sports side of it for you, obviously, has been incredibly successful. it allows you to gain some fame and you started a foundation. it's grown substantially since you started back in 2008 and it's getting bigger. >> yeah, sort of being able to -- we started the i am program in six initial clubs and we just added ten more clubs. so it's -- it's sort of not only learning people -- learning kids -- teaching kids how to swim, but also teaching people sort of everyday things that you can do throughout your life. you know, healthy and active life styles, but you know, say i'm strong, healthy, confident. so it's kind of interesting and fun for me to be able to see with -- with kids. i have the most fun and always -- it's always good being

able to see a real true smile and excitement on the kids' face. >> let's talk about what's happening on the pool. i know you've been training a lot. you just got back from colorado where you were training in the mountains. i at some point started to feel sorry for you lately. it's hard to feel sorry for you about anything. but the fact is, when you win a race now, it doesn't make headlines. it only makes headlines when you lose a race. how do you feel about this? >> i don't know. i'm trying to gear up and get ready for the world championships and hopefully next year at the olympics. but, you know, for me being -- having lost in the year, it's frustrating. >> you were dominant in that event? >> the was the first time i actually wanted to keep that streak, that was the first time in nine years i'd lost. it was frustrating. but i think also at the same time, i think it's going to help me for the next year, being able to have that under my belt and knowing what that felt like, it's frustrating. it really is just -- just kind of ticked me off a little bit.

>> you don't let it -- you don't brush it off. that's something that sticks with you? >> no, i don't want that feeling again. and you know i know what i have to do to be able to make sure i don't have that feeling and being able to -- to actually, you know, swim at santa clara and swim three seconds faster than i did, you know, three, four months ago shows there's some significant change. >> you already said you're going to be competing in london in the next olympic games. so right now, as you sit here, how do you compare where you are physically and mentally 14 months out of those games as compared to where you were 14 months prior to beijing? >> i think it's -- physically it's tough. being able to -- or taking off the time that i did after beijing and after worlds in '09, you know, being able to try and get back to that point is something that we're working on. and something we're heading in the right direction. and you know last summer wasn't

you crossed the line a little bit of your own standards because as i understand it, once you said i'm never going to do botox. that's not going to be something i'll ever do. >> i thought i couldn't afford it. but, yeah, botox is great. i -- here's the thing. my friend that was with me when i had that photo taken was like she did a little intervention on me and she said, it's time, it's time for botox. i don't want to look like one of the real housewives. i'm not going to do a ton of it. i did it. and i was really happy. >> you have it now. we're seeing some of it -- you look really good today. the point of it is when you do that emotionally, you feel better about -- your own image is better. it's worth it. how about that? do women cross the line, the own lines, the lines they set for themselveses? >> they do. they say i'll never do botox. not going to go and buy myself a convertible. and we go out and do those things. you see women going out and having affairs, flirting with old high school sweethearts on

places like facebook to revitalize themselves which really isn't the healthy way to do it, by the way. >> it's not? oh. >> the healthy way to do it is it to learn to feel good on the inside. you're not walking around with a mirror in front of you all the time. it's about feeling good when you're walking down the street without the mirror and the picture. >> i got -- i see outside of the women who show up with the white hair and they're just so -- you know, you know they live this amazing lives. they're just so beautiful and they have the wrinkles and the hair. but something shines through. am i just dreaming when i'm thinking that that's the way to go? do we not put ourselves in this sort of i've got to be beautiful box? >> what you're describing is what feels good to you. and what i tell women and men is you have to figure out what feels good to yourself and do that. for you, botox worked. for me, i'm a chicken. i needed to find other outlets. >> i started to notice things about yourself when you get older, like the muffin top starts happening. it's gotten bad.

for instance, grab a jacket this morning. heading through tomorrow, a little bit cooler. even cooler heading through next week with temperatures dropping from 85 to 80 on thursday. and that's your latest weather. savannah?da >> al, thanks. this morning on "today's health" the four screening tests many women dread. skipping critical exams such as mammograms and mris can be detrimental to your health so "prevention" magazine has come up with ways to help you overcome your fierce. dr. holly phillips, good to be with you. before we get into individual test, just in general there are these important test, but there's discomfort associated with them and a lot of women kind of avoid them. >> absolutely, saa van a you bring up an important point. for some women it's the fear of the results of the test, but for most women it's a fear of the test itself, the pain, the discomfort, but we have to manage to get through it. >> let's talk about mammograms. what is the concern that a lot of women have about them and

what advice would you give them? >> mammograms can be painful. basically the breast tissue is squeezed between two metal plates very tightly. the thing to keep in mind is that mammograms are a very short test. you need four different views to get all of the pictures that you need and each view takes about 10 seconds. so we're looking at 40 seconds of discomfort for a test that's been proven to save lives. >> anything you can do to mitigate the pain that's associated with it. >> there are topical anesthetic sprays that you can get over the counter. it comes with a cream or a spray. for most women, using a mental trick and focussing and knowing that it will not last so long is the best approach. >> colonoscopy, another not so pleasant, but important test. a lot of women who have had them and i've had one myself, it's not the test, no, it's the stuff you've got to drink beforehand. the whole process. >> you are absolutely right. for the test you're sedated and

rarely do people remember anything about it, but the preparation is not fun. i've done it, too. seven hours before the test you'll have to drink about a gallon of an absolutely disgusting liquid. i might as well keep it real. it's horrible. >> it tastes like cough syrup mixed with baking soda. >> it's terrible. >> you have to drink a gallon of it. some women find it's easier if you drink one glass of the prep and one glass of water and gait rid and another glass of the prep, but ultimately you're drinking two gallons instead of one. a lot of people ask about colonoscopy prep pills. they're pills you can take instead of actually drinking that liquid. the pills aren't for everyone and they are linked with problems, with kidney failure and kidney damage and you have to swallow 32 pills in an hour. not so easy. >> since we went on and on about how awful it is, this is a very important test. >> incredibly important. it's recommended for everyone over the age of 50 and many

people eaven younger and it doe save lives. >> the next one, mris. they're diagnosing a whole range of potential ailments. you go in a tunnel. if you have any tendency toward claustrophobia, this is a scary experience. >> i found in practice, mris are one of the things people fear the absolute most and one of the things we pointed out in "prevention" is there are mind tricks you can use to get through it. listening to music or your favorite book on a cd can make a difference. you can't take an ipod or anything inside the mri machine because it's a big magnet. they're equipped with sound systems so you can ask a tech or your doctor to play the music for you which can help. >> another thing i would suggest is a book, or an audio book because that might have a calming effect. >> visual sizsome something happy. some people visualize the drive home will make a big difference

as well. >> last on the list, end on skopy. it's like a colonoscopy, but coming the other direction. you're putting a tube down your throat. >> you are sedated. it looks for cancer. it looks for ulcer and acid reflux disease. you're sedateed for that part, but many fear gagging when the camera starts to go down their throat. for those people you can ask for a topical anesthetic spray and that cuts down on the risk of gagging and having bad memories of the test. also well worth it. >> you might have a sore throat and just an antiseptic spray on your throat. >> and it resolves very quickly. >> dr. holly phillips, good advice to help us overcome our fears. thank you. still to come, she nearly lost her life, but beat the odds. now an elementary school principal has become an inspiration to her students. up next, great destinations and better deals for a long

babies. i've been singing since i was a little girl, mainly for family and friends in church. i've always had a love and passion for music and singing. it was just by chance that i saw the "today show" would be doing their version of "the voice" competition. i actually had to use my cell phone, and then i didn't even think it uploaded because i didn't really know what i was poing until i got the call that they had chosen the video. one of the biggest surprises was that i was actually going to get to go on a plane for the first time. that in itself was super exciting. >> this is the most amazing thing i have ever seen. >> you'd be surprised what i got in in a day and a half in new york. when i got to the set of the "today show," i was so nervous, i kept my eyes clossd when itches singing. when i opened there and they wereeboth turned around, i didn't know are they turning around because it's over? did someone pick me?
