>> reporter: good morning. i'm christie smith live in san rafael where there were three suspicious fires overnight. several in recent weeks. we'll have that story coming up in a live report. >> plus, the search for missing people in the wake of that amtrak train crash begins this morning. >> scanning the streets of santa clara county in search of the homeless. this morning an ambitious effort to get 1,000 people into homes by 2013. i'm bob redell. i'll have that coming up. >> a live look over san jose. what a beautiful shot on this monday morning, june 27th, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. it's 6:00. i'm marla tellez. laura is off today. let's get started, though, with

meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. we have a lot to go over in the weather department this week. starting with a really nice monday. then the rain moves in tomorrow. yes. heavy rain showers move into the bay area tomorrow into wednesday. followed by significant warm-up. i'm going to break it down for you, help you plan your week. first, 6:01, good morning mike. >> good morning. we have the freeways with no major incidents blocking lanes. a lighter report for chp. a heavier volume than we've seen coming here, 18 minutes out of the altamont pass and speeds below 50 for much of the stretch. speeds at or below 50 miles per hour. then cass so valley, close to the speed limit. i want to point out the live shot of the san mateo bridge t haze and the low clouds around the area. there may be an issue with

visibility. it's okay at least for the drivers. >> 6:01. investigators are trying to piece together a string of suspicious fires happening in the north bay. they happened last night. christie smith is live in san rafael with the look at some of the damage. these are vegetation fires, right? >> reporter: yes. that's exactly right. we're not talking about one but three suspicious fires in just one night. i wanted to show you how close this came to a car dealership over there. if steve can swing around you can see the ashes. this is all that's left this morning. it burned almost all the way up to a fence where there is also an old border's book store. there are two other burn spots along the railroad tracks this morning that run behind buildings in a mostly industrial area. the san rafael firefighters were called out after 9:00 a.m. and found tall grass burning in spots.

this is near a possible homeless encampment. there are clothes and shoes left here along the tracks. the fires were put out quickly and the cause is under investigation but 3 are all considered suspicious. this follows a string of fires in the past month on june 14th. a transient woman was arrested on suspicion of setting fires near a homeless area. before that on may 22, several fires were started near the anderson drive area. also considered suspicious which isn't far from these latest fires near the 600 block of francisco boulevard west. of course if you have any information you are asked to call the san rafael fire department. reporting live in san rafael, christie smith, today in the bay. >> this morning a 4-year-old boy is fighting for his life after his mother accidentally ran over him with the car. family and friends set up a facebook page for brendan who they say has been in surgery.

overnight an update to the page says doctors think the boy will eventually wake up. police say the boy had been playing in the front yard but walked to the driveway as the mother was backing into the street to help a service truck that had been working at the home. >> five are unaccounted for after the fiery amtrak train crash. it happened when a tractor-trailer smashed into the train at a crossing. the train was bound for emeryville. the missing people are listed on the train's manifest but have not been found. the ntsb is investigating and says the damage to the truck is affecting this investigation. >> ordinarily, many of these trucks have an engine data recorder which provides a fair amount of information to the investigators. in this case because of the extent of the fire we don't expect to find much if anything

of any recorders available. >> federal records reviewed by the associated press show a spotty record for the tricking company including being cited for operating a truck with tires so bald the truck had to be taken off the road. crews are searching for a man they think may have fallen out of a small boat. someone reported the man fell overboard yesterday afternoon. he was not reported to be wearing a life jacket. crewed searched last night. his boat was later found washed ashore near tom's point south of dillon beach. >> a woman could face charges for saying her husband and child were in a submerged car. there was a call to a ha goon just before 3:00 saturday morning. police launched a rescue operation after hearing the woman's claim but during that search they found out it wasn't true. police are still looking into

whether she drove into the water on purpose. >> today marks a month since nursing student michelle le disappeared. her family has hired a private investigator. police and the fbi are carrying on their own investigation. le disappeared on may 27 after she left during a class break at a kaiser in hayward. but she never returned to class. investigators have classified her case as a homicide but have not made any arrests and no suspects identified. >> there are about 7,000 homeless people in santa clara county. of those 2,000 are chronically homeless. this morning, though, hundreds of volunteers are hoping too change that. today in the bay's bob redell is live at west gate church to show us how. >> reporter: good morning. we're about an hour ago the volunteers, around 4:30, they

did take off and are going to their assigned places in the county. and what they are going to be doing, divide themselves into teens and looking for these people. they want to interview them, conduct a survey to find out who is most in need of housing. then the idea is by 2013 they want to get 1,000 of these people into permanent homes off the streets here in the south bay. that sounds so ambitious. >> it does. it's audacious. >> is it doable? >> i think so. i think that would be cut our chronic population in half and i think we have all of the resources we need to do this. i think we spend more money now keeping people outside, it costs two to three times more to keep folks, using the emergency room, get arrested, other things that cost money when putting someone in a place that they can afford with services that they need cost two to three times left.

>> never thought of it like that. there are members of the council out there. what's going to happen today, tomorrow and wednesday? >> we're conducting registry week. the campaign is to house 100,000 people in country wide in two years so our goal is 1,000. for the first three days we are canvassing all of the census racks. and we're going to survey them based on the health and housing needs. and be able to take that information back to our policy makers and others in order to decide what we have to do the find these people places to live. >> i imagine just to have somebody to show up in the morning with a cup of coffee and hey, i care, has to go a long way. >> folks are concerned about about waking people up. when you're outside you're not actually comfortable and people step around you. this is an opportunity for folks that don't usually engage with our homeless friends to get out,

the front arrives in the north bay. we'll see showers before the bulk of moisture comes through. between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. when it will ride through the north bay, slide south, the south bay may not get that much rain. the places that do and see some of the pop-up thunderstorms we could pick up to a half inch of rain south of the golden gate bridge. north bay up to an inch of rain. really significant. if we see snow it will be above 7,000 feet. the highest peaks of the sierra nevada fair game for snow showers as we head to the last week in june. we're going to ride our temperatures to about 80 degrees in livermore, 83 in fairfield. we have a significant warm-up at the end of the seven-day. we'll get to that in a minute. right now let's get you to work. with mike. >> here we're looking at crazy

difference in speeds, 16 miles per hour registering in antioch. dipping down to 60 from 62 over the last 15 minutes. we may see that build through that area. we have a smooth drive but speeds below 50, closer to 40 on average through almost heading to the dublin interchange. you get west of both areas, the build starting to form. we'll get a live look and see how it's like past the coliseum. the volume is starting to pick up. across the bay bridge a live lack at the flow of traffic. steady into the city as well. smooth drive and shouldn't be a major issue. we might see the metering lights judging from the oaks heading into the maze. >> thanks, mike. 6:11. still to come san francisco's

>> 6:14 we have breaking sports news right now. a spokesman for the los angeles dodgers says the team filed for bankruptcy protection this morning. the giants rival has been dealing with financial difficulties related to the divorce of team owner frank mccourt and his wife. the the dodgers filed for the protection three days before the pay roll is due and the court says he can't meet that pay roll. this morning video of a fire still burning at a hotel a mile

away from disney's animal kingdom in orlando, florida. the "orlando sentinel" reports several people are in the hospital because of this fire but so far their conditions are not known. the hotel's roof has collapsed. there are 430 rooms in the hotel but it's unclear how many of those rooms are burning. the fire has shut down a nearby freeway. this morning three men are hurt and another is behind bars after brawling in the streets ever oakland. police say one of the men had been shot, one stabbed and another was hit with a baseball bat during a fight late last night on 13th avenue near foothill boulevard. police are looking for another suspect armed with a gun during the fight. >> state budget negotiations are getting heated and there is name calling. the budget needs to be in place by friday and so far no deal. yesterday governor brown's chief spokesman called state republicans quote basically

moronic for failing to come to agreement. the governor wants an election to extend the vehicle tax and sales tax hikes that expires friday. republicans say there will be no election without pension, regulatory and spending policy concessions. and in response the governor's spokesman told a radio station quote, the republicans in sacramento are basically moronic but we're hopeful that they can realize we're on an unstable tra skrektry here. one that is not fiscally responsible and one for which there are at least -- they are at least partially responsible. so far no response from the republicans. >> this morning the streets of san francisco look different from how they did over the weekend. the 41st annual gay pride parade was held yesterday from families to politicians, a record million plus lined the streets, though the group that runs the parade is facing some financial

problems revelers enjoyed as many events as last year. >> just the freedom to be out, nobody cares, we can hug, hold hands, be like everyone else and nobody looks at us differently. >> with the passage in new york of same sex moyrnlg some hope what happened in new york will happen in california. looks like they have nice weather in the city. changes are in store. rain is headed this way. christina loren has a look at that. >> we're taking a live look at san francisco. we have thick fog. by about about noon we'll start to see the cloud deck break apart. this is what we're looking at. pretty nice mild start. 52 in san mateo, 52 in san francisco. by about noon we'll look toward a partly cloudy sky. 62 mild degrees. we're only going to round out the day in the city at about 67

mild degrees. as you make your way home from work. a pretty significant round of rain on the way as early as tomorrow as this slides to the south. it's going to drag a front through. some pretty heavy rain periods, rain tomorrow. especially in the north bay where we could pick up to an inch. we see a good dip in the jet stream. above 7,000 feet more snow on the way for the last week of june, very impressive. something i'm concerned about tomorrow are the pop-up thunderstorms. it will be warm enough with temperatures at noon in the 70s this time of year. i think that probably some good thunderstorms inland. that means if you live in the east bay and the south bay keep your eye on the sky. we'll keep you updated. 78 in fremont. 78 in san jose. then after we get through the showers our temps climb into mid-90s so a little bit of everything. i'll talk about why it's going to be so farm so fast coming up. back to you.

>> welcome back. a live look over san jose this morning. looks to be a beautiful day in the south bay. really all over the bay area. 6:20. this is the time when the morning commute starts to pick up. mike, problems on the road? >> it's unusually heavy in many spots. i talked to jason our multimedia friend out here telling me the roads for him looked extra crowded this morning. 580, slow all morning, now an accident which has cleared from north livermore, that caused this blip. 21 minutes from the altamont pass to the dublin interchange. speeds dip for antioch and now it's 59 so a gradual slowing. we'll watch for anything dramatic which might happen but so far holding with a steady build a. bay bridge toll plaza,

have changed. the dmv is issuing white stickers for cars all electric, on compressed gas or high grow again fuel cells. >> today should be the day the u.s. supreme court finally rules on a controversial california law banning the sale of violent video games to children. scott mcgrew says even if the ban has the best intentions legally it's a loser. >> it really has. if the supreme court were the heavyweight championship of the world boxing match, the california law at the center is a fighter that has never won. in fact, it's been knocked out in the first round every time. every court that has dealt with this law has struck it down. specifically, the law which never took effect bans the sale of video games with egregious violence to children. parents can buy the games, of course. so would call of duty qualify?

that's one of the problems. what does and doesn't qualify as too much violence and who gets to decide that. the other problem is the law specifics video games. not book, tv, movies. that's very tough to defend. the video games somehow have a special class. there is some history in this. in 1952 the supreme court considered a similar law after new york state tried to make this film illegal. certain movies that were considered religiously blasphemous. this was an italian film. it wanted to ban immoral or indecent material. this tries to attack violent material. >> a tough case. >> we'll see. we should get a decision some time today. >> 6:25. investigators think someone could set a series of fires as is happening in the north bay. plus, volunteers hope to change

with housing 1000, the organization running this, what they want to do is prioritize these women with the main goal that by 2013 getting people off the street into permanent homes. >> i'm out here because it's the right thing to do. and i would encourage any one that is interested in helping out with the homeless, what i found, i've been volunteering for the past few months and what i found is there's a lot of resources just not enough man power. >> i'm homeless and i know what it feels like to be out there. something like this is a blessing. >> there are also many members of the san jose council joining. the volunteers will be out to conduct this santa clara county wide survey. one reason why the council members are out there, what the organizers hope is that maybe they could get them a better sense of how important it is to

get these people off of the street. it costs two to three times more to keep someone on the streets than provide them with a home if you consider that homeless shelters cost money, many homeless, not many but some end up in jail and we have emergency medical care. those three alone make it very expensive and the organizers of housing 1000 says it's cheap tear give them a permanent place. if you think about volunteering it's too late. a lot of these were trained on how to conduct the survey, that is done. but you can go too housing 1000 sv.org or more information how you can help. cash is always welcome. reporting live, bob redell. >> the viewers if they are joining us, it was something to see. when so many were out so early this morning. >> reporter: yes. we heard from nicholas who happens to be a homeless person. i know there were other homeless

people going out to help their brothers and sisters, and there were people taking their monday morning off or maybe going to work early on as you heard from one, they felt like it's the right thing to do. >> thank you very much. two people are dead after a car accident at a san jose nursing home. this happened saturday morning at the amber woods gardens. a 90-year-old woman mixed up the gas pedal and brake and crashed into the activity room. with one dozen inside. two were killed in this accident. four others were injured. >> two teens are in police custody in connection with a weekend shooting near san francisco's gay pride festivities. a 15-year-old boynd 18-year-old man shot five people saturday. close to san francisco's city

hall. t shorts say it had nothing to do with the celebrations. police think use of the victims were target it. the others were innocent bystanders. the gang task force is investigating. >> we're following the investigation into a string of suspicious fires in the north bay. christie smith is live in san rafael. you have damage to show us this morning. >> reporter: yes. good morning to you, marla. these are all grass fire, not one, not two but three in the same area in one night. there are two others that go all the way down the railroad tracks here. i wanted to show you how close this dime a wooden fence. there is a car dealership and old border es book store. this near the 600 block. all of the fires considered suspicious and this follows similar suspicious fires in

recent week, all of them in the same area. the three are near a possible homeless encampment. they knock these down very quickly. the cause under investigation. on june 14 a homeless woman was arrested on suspicion of starting two fires on mission avenue the day beforement also in may several suspicious fires that broke out by anderson drive which isn't far from where these broke out. no one hurt in these fires. san rafael firefighters asking anybody with information to give them a call. live in san raex, christie smith, today in the bay. >> some good news now, thank you for that. good news, gas prices are going down. that's leading up to the fourth of july weekend. the national avenue fell 11 cents over two weeks. the average price in the u.s. is

now $3.32 a gallon. in the bay area prices are higher. in oakland regular runs an average of $3.82. a year ago a gallon of regular cost $3.15 in oakland. gas prices are expected to drop 10 more sents. 6:36. time to look at the forecast. the fourth of july is going to be hot. >> it is. that doesn't mean that mammoth is closed. they are going too be open from now until the fourth of july and stay tuned. we have recent video to show you just how good that skiing and snow boarding is. so impressive. as you can see we have good air quality, we're going to continue to see good air fault with a good shot of rain. we can breathe it in. nice and clear as we head

through the next few days. that's the good news. the bat news is we have areas of concerns because of the snow pack and the warm weather that's melting it. we're going to keep watching that. for us in the bay area, a really nice looking day. then the changes arrive. 46 now unnovato. is temperatures have dropped. this is around sun vise. we head throughout day wour temperatures will keep climbing. low pressure, this guy is going to bring about the significant change the next 48 hours. it will start to drive the on shore flow. mostly sunny. by tonight a full deck of clouds, tomorrow morning a few showers, we meet back here at 4:30 a.m. the temperatures in the 70s and 80s will fall into the 60s. 78 degrees in fremont, 65 in san francisco, looking at about 58 degrees in the city tomorrow. you thod the winter coast.

79 percent of santa rosa today. and i'll let you know what that means because we have another round of very warm weather after we pick up rain and snow in the middle of the week. the latter portion of the week brings about a significant warm-up. triple digits back on the map. we'll talk about that coming up and show you that video from a man that's 6:38. what are you following? >> a lot of folks following each other slow around golden gate field. look at this shot. from the metering lights, folks sort of -- and they are off after they get the green light. from the toll plaza, we see the cars approaching and slowing. that's what you see there. slowing past west grand avenue and jamming up past this shot. hov a big change if you have three or more carpooling across that bay bridge. speeds still about 13 miles per

>> 6:42. today the u.s. supreme court is expected to rule on california's law prohibiting the sale of violent video games to kids. state senator leland ge from san francisco wrote the law in 2005. today in the bay's tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. now. tracie, would this make it illegal for an adult to buy a game for a child? >> it's a good question and based on the way the law is written it doesn't appear that way. it appears it would be illegal to sell it to a child directly

but not necessarily for another adult or someone else to buy the game and let a child play it. that's the way the law is written. based on how it's written the supreme court will decide whether or not it passes constitutional musterment we expect that ruling today. this of course was a law from 2006 but never really implemented in california because ever the court challenges. the ninth circuit said that it violated not only free speech rights ever children but constitutional rights against illegal search and seizure. the state of california has argued like we have an interest in protecting young people from obscene material we also have an interest in protecting them from violent material. the industry has said a couple of problems. one, they have got ratings. parents don't have to buy them if they think they are too mature. and two t industry has argued there is no hard evidence that playing violent video games leads to real violence, to

violence in real life. so those arguments have been made. the court now expected the make their decision. several other states and two big cities have lost challenges like this when they tried to ban these video games. >> tracie potts live in washington. thank you. >> new legislation will be introduced to stop california's death penalty. senator loni hancock of berkeley wants to replace it with permanent imprisonment. hancock says the death pen salt costing millions a year. she cites a report that says it costs $184 million more that year to execute prisoners than it would to keep them in prison for life. under the plan prisoners on death row have sentences converted to in prison for life. >> a suit will be filed against a major retailer accused of religious discrimination. a muslim woman says she was

of other tax, fee increases cut to the $5.8 billion. it can be done. >> he says while no lawmaker will admit it the pay docking proposition passed by voters in the fall is working because it added urgency to budget talks. >> the giants get the day off waiver heading to chicago to play the cubs. the time off will give them time to soak in their sweep of the cleveland indians. they plied the final game last night. madison bumgarner had 11 strikeouts for the giants. they beat the indians 3-1. the a's get the day off as well. the marlins come to oakland tomorrow. the a's dropped their last game in philly yesterday, they had to face philly's ace roy halladay. >> it may be safe to go back in the water. a shark jumping over a surfer in florida. the four-foot long spinner shark took to the air.
