it looks like they are now pushing on to the peninsula. that full forecast is on the way. let's get you on your way to work at 6:00 a.m. looking busy out there this morning, mike. >> we have a lot of cars on the road. for a tuesday, at this time it's not unusual but you know, the summer months typically see a later pattern. here you go. 17-minute drive out of the altamont pass. in the 40s down to 40 at the sensor around north flynn. speeds at 63 as you approach el charo. approaching the maze, close to the limit for most routes but the east shore freeway through oakland and a live shot shows you the volume. the headlights through oakland starting to pick up approaching the coliseum where the a's play tonight. back to you. >> thank you, mike. this morning we are following developing news from the east bay where a 2-alarm grass fire ripped through property in concord. the fire burned through property

behind 1090 discovery way, this is near csu east bay's contra costa center. christie smith is live with more. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. fire crews stayed out overnight and kept watch out here because it is quite windy. they don't want this to flare up again. there is quite a bit of dry grass here. the fire happened over the ridge there but a dispatcher tells me that firefighters had to protect some of the homes here as flames crept up from behind. the distinguigood news, none wa. the fire started just after 11:00 last night, and burned quickly. jumped to two alarms in the hills here behind discovery way in the crystal ranch subdivision. it took less than an hour for firefighters to knock it down.

some neighbors said they thought they heard fireworks. they have not determined that and the cause is under investigation. reporting live in concord, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:02. we have new details on a fight in walnut creek. police arrested two suspects overnight. it was a stabbing fight. witnesses say a large group was fighting in the parking lot of a walnut creek car wash. when police arrived two people were found on the ground with stab wounds. both underwent surgery and are in stable condition. a third person was stabbed but not seriously. both of the suspects are from walnut creek. they are in the detention facility on $50,000 bail. >> the investigation into the deadly amtrak crash continues this morning. investigators are looking at the truck driver's cell phone records trying to determine if lawrence valley's cell phone was

a distraction that caused him to crash his truck into the amtrak train. they want to find out the he was text messaging or talking on the phone before friday's accident. valley and five others were killed, one person is unaccounted for. amtrak is trying to determine if if that person was even on the train at the time. >> the state budget deal is in place almost two weeks after the deadline. democrats claim the deal will balance the 2012 budget with a reserve of $500 million. democrats are counting $4 billion from income taxes counting on the concept that you, me and everyone will make more and thus pay more to the state. if that money does not come through there will be a series of trigger cuts including cuts to education, health and human services. and the department of corrections. democrats also claim the budget will reduce the structural

deficit by 75% over the next 18 months. >> it's a good budget but not the budget that i started with in january. and the democratic leadership wanted. and that was a budget that had revenue. we still have our wall of debt out there, we still have work to do. >> the full legislature is expected to vote on the budget this afternoon. so far republicans are not supporting that proposal. >> the battle continues for prop 8 as backers file an appeal with the federal courts. the appeal was filed by the ninth u.s. circuit court yesterday, the same court which is hearing an appeal on a decision striking down the ballot measure. prop 8 sponsors want to overturn a ruling earlier which upheld a judge's decision to over to turn the measure. it argued that the judge was biased because he did not disclose he was in a long term relationship with a man. opponents say the argument was frivolous and owe finance sif. >> a new study shows a disease

normally attributed to older people could see an increase in numbers with younger adults. this comes as the top researchers in the field are gathering at stanford to share their work. marianne favro joins us live from palo alto with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. you may not know this but the bay area is a hub for alzheimer's research. today scientists from uc-berkeley, stanford university and the buck institute are going to come here and talk about a cure. one of those findings is out of ucss, scientists found soldiers with post traumatic stress disorder are at a higher risk of developing dementia and alzheimer's dtz. right now in california there are about 600,000 people living with alzheimer's. among californians, baby boomers age 55 and older, one in 8 will develop alzheimer's disease. today the world's leading

alzheimer's researchers will gather for a symposium, that starts at 9:30 this morning. one of the key things they are going to be doing is to work together to collectively establish priorities on what research they want to pursue. hopefully they can come up with a cure. right now there is no cure for alzheimer's. coming up in about a half hour, i'll tell you about a spice you may have put in your coffee or on your cereal may help ward off alzheimer's. that in a half hour. >> good information. thank you. 6:07. at&t is hoping a proposed scaled back version to upgrade its network in san francisco will get approval. later today the board of supervisors will consider a proposal by the company to install more than 700 boxes all over the city. each unit would00,000 high speed technology which at&t says will

improve internet, cable and land line service. opponents say the boxes would get in the way of pedestrian traffic and property owners. they say the boxes are an eye sore. the board delayed a vote twice so far. 6:08. all of that counterfeit clothing confiscated in the giants world series run will be put to use. the department of homeland security will be in san francisco to showcase hundreds of tee shirts and ball caps seized last year. the items will be donated to the nonprofit group world vision which will distribute them. the merchandise is worth more than $150,000. that's a lot of giants gear. we like it. time to check in with a very big giants fan, christina loren with rain in the area. >> an even bigger weather fan. we've got weather to tell you about. i've just noticed some really intense action, pea size hail

off the coast. let me show you what's developed. you see the counterclockwise protation, look at this guy. this cell. that has red, yellow, even purple. the purple is an indication of hail. this is a very unstable front and the showers, they are starting to intensify. look at this, the yellow the originals starting into your area. we have wet conditions along 101. santa rosa to novato. you want to take it easy. and more and more of this pushing on shore as we head throughout the early morning hours into this afternoon and this evening as we set your future cast in motion. you can see by 9 a.m. the bulk of the moisture pushes in. this is a slow, slow mover. the noon hour, draped across and will push inland until about 4:00 p.m. we're talking steady moderate rain and even pockets of thunderstorms. you really want to take it easy out there.

already come forward to say they intend to run for her open seat. >> an east bay city is inviting people to weigh in on its budget plan. concord city council says the budget picture is brighter since a half cent sales tax increase passed. the city says the money will not restore programs cut over the past two years but will keep funding at the current levels. if you would like to attend tonight's meeting is at 6:30 at the city council chambers. belmont council will talk about raising the city water rates by 4.5% tonight. the city says a rate hike is needed to make up for projected revenue loss and decreased water consumption. if approved the average home would pay about $25 more per year. dodgers owner frank mccourt will have to make his case in bankruptcy court today. the team as you probably know filed for protection yesterday.

john cadiz klemack is live at dodger stadium with the details for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. a big deal here in los angeles obviously but all of this happening in delaware where frank mccourt officially filed for bankruptcy for the dodgers. the judge there has to decide what to do flex. it was in the court documents released yesterday we learned about the financing of the dodgers and how frank mccourt plans to move forward. he has until thursday to make payroll and has a plan for about $150 million to do so and keep the team running on his end. the judge has to approve that. if he doesn't and frank cannot make pay roll by thursday major league baseball would take over. the commissioner said that he would be doing that. last week he denied a plan that mccourt had with fox sports to be able to come wake-up a $3 billion idea that frank said would make the team viable for years to come. selig thought too much might go

active in terms of the weather. you see the purple. that's hail. pea-sized hail coming down within this very, very strong cell. we don't have lightning yet. we're watching for that. severe storms possible all day long. we'll break it down for you coming up right now though, if the you've got to get to work mike is watching the slick roadways for you. >> you got to get to work might want to get there before that stuff comes through. christina talking about livermore. you have to deal with the cars on the road. it's causing a 20-minute drive to the dublin interchange. clearing, then she showed you fremont, and 9:18 is going to get the rain -- not snow, the rain coming through, a's play tonight. past the coliseum after work, the metering lights are on. a look at the toll plaza, the backup forming there, past the 880 overcrossing. folks want to get in before the rain. >> how quickly that happens. thank you. 6:30 now. this morning contra costa county firefighters are checking for

hot spots after a late night grass fire in concord. the fire ripped through property behind 1090 discovery way near csu east bay's contra costa center. christie has more on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. that is right, firefighters stayed out overnight just to make sure that this didn't flare up. it's quite windy here this morning. and you've got extremely dry grass on these hillsides and homes tucked away here. the fire was actually on the next hill over but it crept up behind some of the homes which is enough to make some residents grab important things and prepare to leave just in case. the good news, though, is no homes were damaged. firefighters had to do some structure protection a dispatcher tells me. this started after 11:00 last night off of valley road. it jumped to two alarms, burned

about two acres of grass and took less than an hour to knock it down. some neighbors have said that they heard what they thought was fireworks being set off before this fire started. but i spoke with the dispatcher this morning and firefighters tell me that at this point the cause ever the fire is still under investigation. reporting live in concord, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:32. two men are in jail accused of stabbing three people, this happened at walnut creek. witnesses say they saw a large group get in a fight in the parking lot of the walnut creek car wash on north main. when police arrived they found two down on the ground with stab wounds. they are now in stable condition after undergoing surgery overnight. a third person suffered a minor stab wound. >> cell phone video of bryan stow inside dodger stadium before he was attacked is raising questions about who is responsible for his beating.

tmz released this video. you can see a man in a dodgers jersey confront ing stow. the man is not ramirez. police consider ramirez their prime suspect but they have not filed charges. a criminal law professor says if ramirez is charged this video may be key for the defense. >> as a defense attorney i want to plant something in the jury's mind. >> ramirez's attorneys say their client was not at the game on the day stow was attacked. the l.a.p.d. is reviewing and will follow the evidence waiver it takes them. >> a special vigil will be held tonight actually this afternoon to highlight an unsolved murder that happened four years ago today. gary jones was shot and killed

at hayward gas station in 2007. the sheriff's department says jones hatd just left a medical marijuana facility when a minivan began following him. when jones stopped for gas someone stole his marijuana. jones confronted the person and was shot and killed. no arrests have been made in this case. today's vigil starts at 4:00 at abe's gas station. >> 6:34. scientists will be at stanford university to talk about key findings in the race to find a cure for alzheimer's. marianne favro is live at stanford with a look at a new study that points to the benefits of a very popular spice. good morning, marianne. >> reporter: good morning, marla. it might serve you well to add cinnamon to your morning koor sprinkle on the cereal. a new study released researchers

found cinnamon has the potential to prevent alzheimer's dtz. a team of scientists from tel aviv university looked at a cinnamon extract. they added to the drinking water and gave to mice with an aggressive form of alzheimer's. after just four months the researchers found the cinnamon had slowed the development of the disease significantly. today scientists will present more key findings at a special symposium at stanford university. by 2030 the number of people in california with alzheimer's is expected to double to more than 1.1 million people. this morning's symposium starts at 9:30 at the becktell center. it will run until 4:30 this afternoon. one of the key things is hopefully get scientists to collaborate. they only have so many research dollars and they want them to work collectively to hopefully

find a cure. reporting live, marianne favro, nbc bay area news >> we're going to sprinkle our food and drink with cinnamon. we're going to check the forecast with christina. rain is falling. >> it's falling. we've got hail coming down, take a look at what just developed over the last five minutes. talking about five minutes ago. look at this. we have a severe line of storms. this is going to kick up very gusty winds ahead of that front. if you're in san jose if you walk outside you can see the leading edge of this very, very strong front that's producing hail, gusty winds and take a look at this red, the deep maroon. that's heavy rain getting ready to hit san francisco at 7:59. we're well on our way to seeing very active weather. that's going to make for a really rough commute. mike inouye is tracking everything. 9:00 a.m. tuesday, continues to rain. moderate, heavy rain coming down

until 4:00 p.m. through the fairfield area, novato. the front slides south and starts to break apart. the system will ride to the north on a jet stream and will pull the cold front up with. we're going to deal with at least eight or nine hours of steady rain over the bay area. you saw that very, very active radar and it's intensifying every time i check. we're going to keep updateing you. i'm going to stay here until 1:30. we have the potential for strong storms associated with this stronger thunderstorm we could see tornadic rotation, a very slight chance. we're not going to get our guard down. so someone who never lets his guard down, our mikey. >> what's that? hey. just kidding. you should be here when they hand off between rob and christina. there is a ceremony. we're looking to highway 4. the build, speeds below 20 all the way over to where we get the clearing and then still slower now through pittsburg again.

the gradual slowing through the area indicates heavier flow. you're going to find slower patches. slow through livermore as well out of the altamont pass. 23 minutes. 63 is marked. sunol moves smoothly. i'll give you a live shot. there are clouds over there as well. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. they have been on since 6:11. we have a good amount of build and we see movement. there is slight movement but that means it's not completely packed. it's smooth off of the berkeley curve. and then the golden gate bridge, low clouds around so we see folks with the headlights on, using the wipers, the roads are slick in spots. use that as a period of caution. we have the big rain and that's over the next couple of hours. so big changes ahead. >> you know what this does to a commute. >> i do. >> drivers on the road do not want to do what this kitten

>> it's 6:41. for the first time in 30 years new federal regulations are in effect for cribs. now the u.s. has the toughest standards in the world. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. with the look at the standards for us. good morning. >> good morning. here's what you need the know. the drop side cribs we're all so familiar with makes it easier to get the baby out of the crib, they are also dangerous. the cpsc, the consumer product safety commission has banned them for store, you can't buy them on line, at second hand stores, not even supposed to sell them to your neighbor because when that side drop, it can also detach, creating a gap that can and has suffocated children, more than 30 that the government is aware of. hospitals will be exempt from this, hotels, child care centers and rental agencies will have an extra year and a half to comply. also new, new standards for crib mattresses to make them safer

and new standards for the testing of cribs. the manufacturers will not be allowed to re-tight at any bolts and screws as the cribs come loose during the testing. the cpsc says that's not what parents tend to do. one last thing, if you've got one of these drop side cribs at home that you are using, you can get a free immobilizer from the manufacturer, it will at least keep that railing in place although the old crib won't necessarily meet the new standards. >> parents have enough to worry about. they don't need to worry about their child in a crib. thank you so much. 6:43. giants pitcher brian wilson is pulling out a new catch phrase this season. we'll let you -- he's going to tell you about it i should say. >> got him at the end. got him. basically it's when you're talking a little fun trash. and you say, sorry, popa is

perfect strike right down the middle. all the ladies there are like what's he doing? we're not really paying attention to where the ball ends up. nice to look at there. >> that will wake you up. i've seen mike inouye do the same exact trick before he grabs his clicker and gives it a toss. good morning to you. he doesn't need that clicker. he knows what's going on. let me show you what's going on in our world of weather. tale of two sides of the bay this morning. this is san jose. you can see the leading edge of that front coming in, what we can see of it. let's show you the golden gate bridge. where they are also not seeing the heavy rain yet. but yeah, you can see what a difference that makes as we take to you the golden gate bridge. maybe we don't have that. there we go. you can see that fog really starting to set in. we haven't even seen the heavy rain arrive in the city of san francisco yet. take a look at this.

gusty winds right now. especially in marin county. if you are headed out this morning you want to really travel with caution. if you can i'd postpone your travels up in marin for at least the next half hour, maybe 45 minutes. wait for all of this severe weather to pass through. it's headed to san francisco at about 8:14. we'll see it make its way to san mateo, palo alto and hayward, 8:45. it's going to be busy for a while. i'm expecting pretty strong thunderstorms to develop throughout the day today. we've noticed pea-sized hail in couple different spots, heavy rain, and gusty winds. as we continue to heat up throughout day our atmosphere will become more unstable. and more favorable for the thunderstorms. we're going to keep watching this. check ahead on my facebook page. i'll post updates. i'll be here covering this severe weather until about 1:30 when i turn it over to rob mayeda. we have the potential for strong storms to develop. with those strong storms, very

heavy rain, gusty winds in excess of 50 miles per hour. we could see strong gusts of wind. also my concern is the possibility of tornadic rotationment we can't rule it out. we've seen it five times in the california area. so we're going to watch that for you as well. very slight chance but if it does happen we'll break right into coverage here on nbc and let you know about it. 65 degrees in fremont today. that's it. 71 in los gatos and 60 degrees in san francisco, i think the best chance for the pop-up thunderstorms will be inland in the east bay hills where we get the uplift. as we head through the end of the week, 92 degrees by friday. what a difference a couple days make. 95 by saturday. nice warm hot weekend and inland warm at the coast, 73 degrees. so make those plans accordingly. if you want to get outside, without being too hot this weekend you'll stay toward the coast. we have strong storms out there. people need to drive carefully this morning. >> extreme weather. thanks, christina. a drug that could save the lives

socked in, some overcast weather including rain. you can see the wet roadways there. we're going to check your commute with mike. problem spots. >> there are. i think the view made worse by a dirty lens. northbound 101 through the south bay this is the area we told you about. just about 7:00 we see the slowing for 101 from capitol past 680 and 87 north of downtown over to the airport. there's the slow drive for the south bay. 17 has a disabled vehicle south of the bridge and that might be blocking the slow lane so watch that. altamont pass, 6a lot of folks cutting down over through livermore and pleasanton. we'll see the volume of traffic slowing southbound heading to the left. but at the top of the screen you notice the clouds. they have compressed. we have them all over, compressed to a cloud layer touching the top of the hills.

you might encounter lower visibility over the hill into the south bay. we'll take you back to the maps, show you the maze and the approach. we have the slow drive so now about 22-minute drive, the slowing through richmond and then berkeley and emeryville with speeds into the 40s where the yellow and red are. meetderring lights or on. on the map we marked the a's, playing tonight. right now though, there is no problem for 880, the flow on the right side, that's the northbound direction. and the southbound side with the headlights coming toward us down into hayward and toward the san mateo bridge. a like shot there. you see the steamy conditions, the moisture presenting visibility issues. >> an east bay teen buried alive under six feet of sand is in critical condition this morning. doctors say ryan buchanan is unconscious but his brain is reacting to his family's voices. that is lifted the spirits of

his friends who gathered at the creek side community church in alamo for a prayer service. buchanan and dozens of church members were having fun at sun set state beach near santa cruz, this happened saturday. he and another teen were digging a six-foot deep tunnel when it collapsed on top of them. in seconds church members and strangers ran over to dig the teens out. >> something you never want to see, you know. a young boy buried head first in a six-foot hole. >> the creekside community church says it will hold a prayer service every night until buchanan comes home. the good samaritan has more to say. watch his interview by logging on to nbcbayarea.com. click on the story on our home page. >> women battling breast cancer could see the return of a potentially life saving drug. the food and drug administration, the fda, will hold a hearing for the makers of

avastin. it will decide whether to threat manufacturer continue marketing the drug for terminal breast cancer patients. avastin was revoked by the fda last year, two years after it was given accelerated approval in trial studies. reports show the drug did not prolong survival of breast cancer patients despite cases of remission. doctors and patients say the drug should be made available. >> i feel that this drug certainly has activity, we see clinical benefits and i'm worried for my patients' welfare. >> avastin has given me hope and dig ani >> avastin has given me hope and dig anty and strength to carry on. >> many have been taking avastin before it was revoked. it's approved for brain, lung and kidney cancer treatment. 6:55. scott's going to check the markets. >> avastin made by a local company. doctors can use it, just off label.

on wall street the dow industrials are up this morning, better than 50 points. linked in doing well this morning. up better than 8% to 82.90. >> put to the test. >> it's the the one thing we must always be. >> pixar releasing the first trailer for "brave." you heard about it when bob redell was live friday. brave is their first film with a female lead character and due out next summer. the latest transformers movie day abuse at midnight tonight. transformers dark of the moon, there is a lot riding on this movie. it's in 3d and so far has tanked this summer. more people are choosing to see movies in good old fashioned 2d. theaters don't like that because they charge more for 3d. the latest was shot using some
