>> new this morning a violent night on the streets of richmond, four separate shootings, two fatal. i'll tell you what police are saying about it coming up in a live report. >> and a b.a.r.t. officer-involved shooting on a san francisco station platform, the suspect dead, the investigation under way. plus, getting ready for the fourth. the celebration closest to you. a live look outside, it is monday, the fourth of july and this is "today in the bay." >> good morning everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it's 4:30 on the fourth of july.

a forecast with christina. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott mcgrew. we've got a hot day on tap. i'm going just about as warm today as it was yesterday. so, really no heat relief today or tomorrow. i will let you know what the weather holds as we start to see those fireworks light up the sky tonight. i've got your forecast coming up in moments, right now i'm going to send it back to scott. >> thank you much. police and deputies have hands full in richmond investigating four overnight shootings, they happened in a span of several hours on ohio avenue, west ruby avenue, center avenue, and the corner of first street and mcdonald avenue. christie smith is live. investigators, do they have motives on these shootings? >> you know, not yet. i can tell you that we are in touch with the richmond police department spokesperson who is busy fielding calls about this. she's on her way here to the police department, very busy

night. four separate shootings as you said, we know at least two of them are fatal, started last night, very early with a shoot-out on ohio avenue, that was around 8:15. one man shot in a gun battle but will survive. then at 11:05, the first fatal shooting here in richmond, a 19-year-old man was shot and killed on center street after he finished visiting friends, we're told he was sitting in a car when he was shot and killed. then just 10 minutes later on mcdonald avenue another shooting, two men shot, one of them killed. he is a 27-year-old man. also in north richmond another person shot. we're trying to get an update on his condition. there are reports that it could be drug related but that is county jurisdiction, so we do have calls in to the sheriff's department about that. we did ask a police spokesperson if she thought these might be related. she said it's too soon to say. she's on the way here.

as soon as we have that we'll bring that information to you. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. police also working the scene at the civic center b.a.r.t. station in san francisco after a b.a.r.t. police officer shot a man to death. the b.a.r.t. officers responding to reports of a drunk man near the train platform, just before 10:00 last night. witnesses say the man was carrying a knife but at this point it's not clear what happened in the minutes leading up to the shooting. the man was killed at the scene. san francisco police are performing the criminal investigation trying to determine if b.a.r.t. policies and procedures were followed. the civic center station is expected to be reopened sometime this morning. b.a.r.t. and muni passengers must use the powell street station until then. >> now, the shooting of course hitting a raw nerve in the bay area because of the 2009 shooting of oscar grant on an oakland b.a.r.t. platform. former b.a.r.t. officer mehserle

served 11 months in jail for killing grant who was unarmed and face down on the floor on new year's day. it was captured on several cell phones. it sparked several riots in oakland and demonstrations in other parts of the bay area and los angeles. >> a search is on for the driver of a pickup truck who ran from the scene of a deadly crash, also in richmond. happened around 5:00 yesterday morning on eastbound interstate 80 near carlson boulevard. the three-car wreck shut down all of the lanes. the driver in one car died, another hurt, a passenger in the pickup truck also hurt but the driver got out and ran away on foot from the scene. >> richmond police are searching for two men who ganged up on a 67-year-old man and robbed him, on chancellor avenue near third street about 12:30 in the afternoon. two men followed a man from a store, pushed him and he fell forward, knocking him out.

the suspects took the man's beer and $2 in cash and ran away. they are looking at surveillance video to try to find the men. >> they were told to be prepared and they were, some east bay boy scouts back home safe this morning after a memorable trip to the sierra. a rising river cut them off from their camp. stranding them on the other side until the water subsided. today in the bay's kimberly tere talked to the men how they got out and what the experience was like. >> reporter: these boy scouts from troop 202 are home after an adventurous summer camp. the boys were among 280 camping on one side of a river that runs through big tree state park. unseasonable rain caused the river to swell covering a foot bridge, separating the scouts from the main camping area. >> i was at the time we had food and water, all of the other campers did not have food so we shared some of our food with them. while the staff tried to hook up an emergency line to get food

across. >> its more of an inconvenience. >> for parents at home it was a little nerve-racking despite knowing as scouts they are prepared. >> you wonder. you think are they going to make sure they make the right decisions and they did. and i'm proud of all of them. >> the water was low enough for all of the scouts to get across the river where they continued summer camp. >> it was a blast. probably my best river ever. one i won't forget. i'm glad i was able to be in charge and help the younger boys out with everything so definitely an experience to remember. >> and a valuable lesson. the wet winter and spring caused many rivers, streams and creeks to crest and experienced hikers warn no one should take chances with an erratic waterway. at yosemite two men were swept into a creek. one of the bodies was found, the other man is presumed dead. park officials say the snow melt will continue to be a concern over the summer since it has

waterways running heavy and very cold. kimberly tere, "today in the bay." >> emergency crews scrambling to protect one of the most popular national parks, exxon-mobil pipeline in montana ruptured over the weekend spewing thousands of barrels of oil into the yellowstone river. dozens of homes were evacuated after the spill. the order has been lifted. exxon says the area is safe but homeowners are questioning the oil company's claim. >> i don't know if it's getting in my water system. i could smell it in the house through the sump pump as it's pumping out from underneath. my home's in jeopardy. that's what's eating at me. >> exxon says it's not sure why the pipeline ruptured and it regrets the incident. disaster service workers says there is no immediate threat but the effects on the environment are unknown. let's check with christina. it's going to be a hot one. >> good morning. good thing we're used to it in

this great state of california. it is going to be a hot fourth of july. that means if you want to take care of any sort of plans before it gets too hot before the weather makes you angry this afternoon, because it's so darn oppressive, you probably want to get it done early. this morning we are comfortable. look where our temperatures are. right now mostly in the upper 50s, concord you're waking up at 70 degrees, though, 65 in fairfield and 65 in livermore. the east bay cities are going to get very close to the century mark later today but if you're waking up near the coast a refreshing start, santa rosa 58, 59 san mateo, san francisco at 57 degrees. this is where we're headed later on. 4:00 p.m., that's when our highs register this time of year. 83 in oakland, 77 in the city, a little toasty down in the south bay, 92 in san jose. and we're talking about 99 degrees in livermore. the sun sets this time of year at about 8:35. most fireworks displays start at 9:00 p.m. i'd say subtract about 15

degrees from where you see your day time high in your city and that's where you can expect as we head into fireworks time. i'll break those down coming up and we'll show you the cooldown. we got one this week. that's on the way. we'll talk about that soon. back to you, scott. >> 4:38. fewer fireworks shows this year because of city cutbacks. there are still some. in san francisco, the city's fireworks takes place on the northeast water front from aquatic park to pier 39 beginning at 9:30. municipal pier at the foot of van ness will be closed to the public and boats not allowed to enter the lagoon from 1:00 to 11:00 at night tonight. >> in oakland bring your children to a family friendly fourth of july celebration at jack london square. a lot of activities including a petting zoo and dancing and music. that's 11:00 to 4:00. that's all free.

and los gatos families get together for a tribute to bay area soldiers serving in iraq. one los gatos family will honor their daughter who was deployed in may. she left behind her 6-month-old son and her husband. the names will be read, the families honored at noon at los gatos high school. in mountain view, the fourth of july fireworks spectacular happens tonight. that features the san francisco symphony. it's a fireworks display as well. that starts at 8:00, that's free as well. things to do in places to go including the ones on the screen. san jose giants will have fireworks following tonight's game so. if you are near municipal stadium you can see those. cupertino, fireworks start at 9:30, launched from cupertino high. concord's fireworks start at 9:30 at dave brubeck park. san ramon at central park. in marin county see the show at the fair grounds, those start at 9:30. we're celebrating america's

>> 4:44 now. you're looking at the bay bridge, a few people getting up this early on the fourth of july. the ntsb looking into what caused a small plane to make an emergency landsing on interstate 280 in woodside. it crashed into a car. the cessna 210 lost its engine power last night. it landed on the freeway. the pilot could not slow down in time so he rear ended a moving car. the driver of the car nor the plane neither one hurt. >> should a cop be allowed to search your smart phone without

a warrant? courts said yes. one senator has introduced a new measure that would protect your private data even if you are arrested. the state supreme court had ruled under the current law people arrested lose their rights to privacy on whatever they are carrying, even smart phones. the measure waiting for a vote from the state assembly. >> a giant hamburger at the county fair one step closer to breaking the guiness world record. the burger weighing in at a whopping 777 pounds with all of the trimming, that's 187 pounds more than the previous record holder. now, all that is left for the officials to certify the results. >> as for how many calories, about a million 375,000, that's enough to last a person just under two years. >> if you are out and about today, remember what your mother told you. wear sun screen. kim fisher says mom was right. >> reporter: heather knows the dangers of spending too much

time in the sun. >> burning is awful. i hate sun burns. it hurts. >> reporter: even with regular sun block application heather's fair skin is susceptible to burns. >> i always get burns, three or four times in the summer. >> reporter: mark sees patients like heather all too often. >> they don't just look bad and hurt but they can double your risk of melanoma in your life so you should take them seriously. >> reporter: there are lots of myths about how you should take care of sun burns. the doctor wants you to know the facts starting with how to cool one off. >> cool compresses, taking a wash cloth, running it under ice cold water. >> you can use half milk half water. then there's the tried and true method. >> my favorite is tiking clear al0 various a gel in the refrigerator and put that on three, four, five times a day. >> the doc suggests aspirin or ibuprofen to calm the pain.

the best thing is avoid burns and heather has a plan for that. >> sun block, sun block. >> 4:46. christina would advise the same thing. >> always, always, always use that sun screen. especially this time of year when the sun is just going to come blazing through. we have a clear start, little cloud cover. i think we're going to see a little bit of that cloud cover hug the coast. the biggest difference between yesterday morning and this morning is the fact that we do have a pretty good on shore flow. so temperatures overall are going to be similar to where we ended up yesterday. maybe give or take about three degrees. i think some places toward the coast will be cooler because of the marine influence. inland not much in terms of heat relief today. we're starting out at 70 degrees in concord, 65 in livermore, and 65 degrees in fairfield. look at the contrast toward the coast. we have the 50s this morning, the best place to be this afternoon, if you made plans in santa cruz, it's going to be 83

degrees. we've got more changes coming this week. all courtesy of monsoonal moisture sitting to our south. this is that typical wrap around moisture we see this time of year, thunderstorms in southern california. what's going to happen we head through tomorrow we'll see some of this flow come up just to the north, so that we get a little relief. some clouds are going to kick up in the bay area. that will keep us a little bit cooler and continue as we head through the next couple of days. then a trough of low pressure that is really going to cool us down. i put the 80s back on the map so we have relief from the oppressive heat but it's not that bad. 77 degrees in san francisco, 90 at redwood city. looking really good for today. 93 inland, 72 at the coast. we'll continue to update you throughout the day. >> thank you. the a's playing a day game this fourth of july hosting the mariners. oakland coming off a big win yesterday against the diamondbacks. gonzalez on the mound allowing one run in seven innings. all-star performance considering

he was named to the american league all-star team. >> it was a secret vote to myself. i wasn't trying to announce it but i'm pretty sure everyone goes out trying to make the all-star team, trying to make playoffs and win a cy young if you're a pitcher. there are so many awards you want to do as an athlete. my goal was trying to pitch, trying to stay healthy and at least give our team a chance to win. >> gonzalez the only member of the athletics to make this year's all star roster. an off season for the sharks but they are making moves. last week they traded devin, last night they say good-bye to dany heatley, trading to the minnesota wild. halvelet may not score goals he is a faster player. he's cheaper which means the sharks have extra cap room to work with. >> san francisco's giving soccer fans a chance to watch the women's world cup on a big

screen. between july 9th and 17th you can watch the world cup matches at the civic center plaza. they can watch plenty of activities for kids including mini soccer games and soccer skill challenges. now these matches are the 9th, 13th and 17 it is starting at 9:00 and 11:45 in the morning. >> coming up if you don't feel like going out and braving the fireworks we'll have a show for you without leaving the comfort of your home. and san jose's joey chestnut gets ready to defend his hot dog title. what's different this year and a live picture of san jose this morning. it is 4:50.

>> 4:53 as we look at 880, a bunch of people headed somewhere. joey chestnut is getting ready for the nathan's hot dog eating contest. he is the four-time champ last year 54 franks in 10 minutes, that includes the buns. this time there is a twist in the competition. he will only compete against men. this is because after 95 years, nathan's has created a women's division for the contest. the explanation is that women don't have to play men at

we'll see you at 5:00. >> all right, royal couple prince william and his bride catherine continue their tour of canada. they seem to be winning fans everywhere they go. the duke and duchess of cambridge paid a visit to quebec city, one of the oldest cities in north america. in a nod to french speaking crowds prince william thanked them for their patience with his accent. that's what he said. the duke and duchess visited canada's smallest province. kate has kind of a special love because of the anne with green gables book. william and kate plan to spends the weekend in southern california. fireworks displays going on all over the bay area today. if you want to stay home, though, there's a great option, the macy's fourth of july fireworks show in new york city will be aired here on nbc bay

area. today in the bay's mark barger has a preview. >> for 35 years fireworks in macy's have been synonymous on the fourth of july. >> when i do this show it's not just putting fireworks in the sky. it's putting fireworks in the sky that can almost make you cry. >> again the hudson river will be command central for the massive production, which is kept licensed pie tro technicians busy for more than a week. >> six barges two miles long, 40,000 shells bursting, almost 1,000 feet in the air, 17 colors and a myriad of shapes. >> the host for the telecast says this year's event has added significance. >> we've also got two important anniversaries t 125th anniversary of the statue of liberty and the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 and paying tribute to those who lost their lives on that date. >> the statue of liberty will provide the backdrop for
