>> i'm celebrating your return. we have really, really summer-like weather to look forward to. if you need to get anything done, if you wanted to throw the football around if that's one of your fourth of july rituals, try to do it early because it's going to be hot inland today. very, very close to the 100, the century mark, triple digits back on the map. the city looks good, i think we're going to see fog this morning. we'll take you through everything including a cooldown slated for this week. so that's coming up. i'm going to send it back to laura. >> thank you very much. a b.a.r.t. officer involved in a shooting that ends with a suspect dead. two b.a.r.t. officers are now on administrative leave. today in the bay's marla tellez joins us live from the civic center station with what happened and what b.a.r.t. riders can expect today. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this all happened here at the civic center station last night, b.a.r.t. officers responded after getting reports of a man perhaps under the influence of

alcohol and/or drugs on the platform. two officers responded. they say this man was holding a knife, multiple shots were fired. the man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. joining me live to explain this further and the latest on the investigation is the chief communications officer with b.a.r.t., mr. johnson, i know it's a very busy night for you. and b.a.r.t. what's the latest on the investigation? any word into what caused the officers or officer to fire? >> well, we're still trying to put that together right now. that is something that we're going to be spending some good time on as well as the police department. both of us are doing parallel investigations, we want to insure ourses that this is an accurate investigation and unbiased. we have two investigations into this right now. >> it's standard procedure to put the officers on administrative leave. >> that's correct. they get questioned first by investigators, and then those questions are recorded, the

answers recorded, and then they are put on administrative leern during the course of the investigation. >> i understand that the officer involved in the shooting, there was also evidence of broken glass and multiple knives on the scene? >> that's what we understand at this point. there was what appears to be glass from a bottle as well as knives on the scene. so all of this we're trying to piece together. you mentioned earlier that was a report we got about 9:30 yesterday evening, and then our officers, the two officers responded. and we're still trying to make sure that the person that they -- that was described as a wobbly drunk was the president-of-suspect who is now deceased. however all this happened, we just want to express our condolences to the family of this suspect. i mean, regardless of what led up to it, who is right or wrong in this, it is a tragedy for all involved. and you know, any time anybody dies it's not something we want

to see at b.a.r.t. or anywhere ever. this is our sixth officer-involved shooting in our 40-year history. so it's very rare, but one is too many. >> certainly. thank you for your time this morning. now b.a.r.t. service will resume here at the civic center at 8:00 this morning but because of the fourth of july holiday it's operating on sunday service, and a little later at 10:30 b.a.r.t. is holding a news conference to update the media as to the latest on this investigation. >> all right. thank you. we'll continue to check with you throughout the morning as well. thank you. >> san jose police are looking into a weekend shooting that sent one person to the hospital. that happened on loma verdi drive. the victim was shot several times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. officers are investigating to see if the shooting was gang related. >> san francisco police have their hands full this morning investigatings two separate shootings that sent three people to the hospital. first shooting happened saturday night around 6:00, the man was

standing in front of the mcdonald's on fillmore street when someone opened fire. he was hit in the hip but not seriously injured. he took a cab to the hospital. the second shooting happened about a half hour later near the corner of ellis and jones. a man was shot in the upper body and a 78-year-old man nearby hit in the fooxt both were rushed to the hospital. a suspect was arrested in that shooting. >> police and deputies are looking into a string of shootings in the east bay overnight. they all happened in richmond within a span of several hours. some deadly. christie smith is live in richmond. she joins us with the latest on the investigation there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. i got off the phone with a spokesperson for the richmond police department. she's on her way down here. she's fielding calls about this right now. very violent night here in richmond, four separate shootings. police can't say for sure what's going on here. but they are certainly looking

into the possibility that at least some of this may be gang related. the gun fire started about 8:30 last night on ohio avenue near 39th. one man hit in a shoot-out but is expected to survive. after 11:00 it turned deadly on ruby avenue. a 19-year-old man was shot and killed. he was sitting in his car, after visiting a friend when he was shot. then ten minutes later a double shooting on center, 27-year-old man was shot and killed, another man hit but is expected to survive. right before this, at about 10:30 on mcdonald there was another shooting. possibly drug related. and this one is believed to be fatal as well. but it is county jurisdiction, so we're trying to get confirmation on that. we have calls in to the sheriff's department this morning. but i asked the spokesperson for richmond police if there had been any arrests in these shootings since last night and she said no. reporting live in richmond,

christie smith, "today in the bay." >> busy night there. thank you very much. san francisco police are asking for the public's help in solving a 10-year-old murder case. in 2001, investigators say paula bryant was stabbed to death. her body was found south of the market district. 25-year-old was last seen leaving a bar in the area. police have released a sketch of a possible suspect described as a white male in his 40s, standing 6 feet tall, 200 pounds. he has black hair and a tattoo of a skull and cross bones on his right arm. >> a warning from bay area police about a fake donation request going around. martinez police officers association says someone is calling people and asking for donations on behalf of the family of brian carter. carter was an 11-year veteran of the force who died after a battle with nonhodgkin's lymphoma. it doesn't know after fund for the family. the city, however, is holding a blood drive in carter's name

this friday at city hall. all right. let's switch gear, get a look at the forecast for today. a hot one in the works. >> a hot one. you know what that means, high pressure is going to clear our skies so we can see those fireworks vividly tonight. that's what you want, a clear night, very little cloud cover even at the coast as we head through 9:30 when we see a lot of the firework displays start. we have quite a roller coaster to get through this week when it comes to your weather. high pressure is in control right now. and as we head throughout day today temperatures will be very, very close to where they ended up yesterday. as we head through tomorrow, a little bit of a change. we'll talk about that in a minute right now concord you're at 70 degrees, sun comes up at about 5:30, we're about 20 minutes away from that now. and those numbers are going to shoot up once that sun comes out. 58 in santa rosa, 57 san francisco, and 61 degrees in sunnyvale. so this is what we're looking at this week. today will be hot, tomorrow a little muggy especially to the south. we've got subtropical moisture

coming up, that monsoonal flow already producing a good amount of showers and thunderstorm activity. in southern california for us, it's going to make it muggy and we might see a little rain in the south bay. the further to the south you live the muggier tomorrow. this system drops in for the middle of the week. that's going to cool us down, bringing the 80s back even inland where we're expecting 99 degrees today. 99 in livermore, 99 in fairfield and 97 degrees in concord. gorgeous in the city, 77 degrees, i've got your giants forecast coming up and your seven-day. laura, back to you. >> we'll look forward to that. thank you. lots of things to do and places to go for fourth of july. there's going to be a rose and blue parade at 10:00 this morning. the old-fashioned family style parade, winds through the rose garden neighborhood and ends on the alameda near shasta avenue. among those taking part mayor

chuck reed and his wife. >> speaking of parade, alameda's fourth of july parade will kick off 18 few hours, it will start at park street, make its way to webster street. starts this morning at 10:00. more than 170 entries and 2500 participants will march along the three-mile route. >> in san francisco the city's fireworks display takes place on the northeast water front down to pier 39, starting at about 9:30. mu nistal pier at the foot of enis avenue will be closed to the public. boats can't enter the lagoon from 1:00 in the afternoon until 11:00 at night. there are other fireworks events around the bay area. some of them are on the screen. you can see san francisco fireworks from the deck of the uss hornet in alameda. that would be cool. $10 for kids, $25 for adults. fireworks are at 9:30. or head to leo j. ryan park that starts at 9:30 as well.

good morning to you. looks like a live look outside across the span of the golden gate bridge. look at that, no one up and about. perhaps going to wake up later this morning so you can stay up late, watch the fireworks displays. 5:14. nearly 40 cars went up in flame giving firefighters quite a battle. that fire started just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon in an over flow hertz rental car lot north of the san francisco airport. look at the damage. took firefighters more than an hour to gain control of that, then they had to put out hot spots. nearly 40 cars were damage ordinary destroyed. the wind made it difficult to fight the fire. it spread quickly because of dry grass under a lot of the cars. firefighters think that people using fireworks in the area may have started that fire. luckily no one was hurt. fireworks, by the way, are illegal in south san francisco.

>> more trouble for a small san jose school district. for the second time in three years santa clara county grand jury issue add critical report on the luther burbank district. the jury alleges that it wasted $900,000 on consultants and on the buy-outs of fired superintendents. in the report the jury called for the district to merge with a larger neighbor such as san jose unified and says trustees governed poorly and did business in skrext >> battle brewing over giant red wood trees. the department of transportation wants to remove dozens of the trees in humboldt county. it wants to realign 101 which winds through the red woods. local groups are asking federal judge to stop the project. says the plan would damage root systems and increase traffic and pollution. a ruling is expected this week.

>> another hot one on tap. let's check the forecast. >> good morning to you. yes, it's going to be another hot one. that means if you wanted to get anything done and take a look at this, if you get out there right now, you get gorgeous sun rise. you did see the golden gate bridge. a little bit of fog developing along the span of the golden gate but otherwise looking good. i think some of the fog will develop through the next hour or so. but take a look at this beautiful sun rise. lucky to wake up in america and of course to wake up here in the bay area. happy fourth of july to you. we look good, high pressure is in control. as we head through the next couple of days we're going to see changes. first it will get downright muggy in the south bay, some of this moisture sweeps in from the four corners region. then a little trough of low pressure that will cool us down to the middle of the week we'll get to the seven-day. 60 in hayward, 55 degrees down in santa cruz.

by noon getting on the warm side in the east bay. 83 degrees and 11:00 a.m. today. and then we round out the day, 99 in fairfield, 99 in livermore, and 90 in santa rosa. firework time, subtract about 15 degrees from the highs and that's what you can expect. 99 for tuesday, i'll break down that fireworks forecast for you momentarily. 92 degrees by wednesday. then the 80s return. that's the big story. better weather around here as we get into the end of the week and this weekend, so if it was too hot for you to go out, throw the ball around this last weekend, you're going to get a chance to this weekend. back to you. >> which is good. the cooldown is coming. and in many neighborhoods you could hear the hum of the air conditioning units. you certainly probably want to get those conditioned if you haven't already. chris has some tips for us. >> reporter: let's begin with what happens when you don't follow the advice about maintaining your air conditioner. >> that just turns into

something that's going to cost you several hundred dollars to have someone come out potentially on a saturday night when you know, it's 100 degrees. >> reporter: angie hicks founder of angie's list preaches efficiency because it represents about 40% of the power bill in summer. so, a few things you can do without a technician include keep a landscaping at a distance. >> if you get landscaping too close it makes it inefficient because you end up with a bunch of it can't get enough air flow around the unit to operate efficiently. >> inside the house make sure the thermostat is far from anything that can heat it up. like the light bulb in a lamp. >> or it's going to cause your unit to work a lot more than it needs to to keep the thermostat itself cool. which is not our end goal. >> reporter: using fans of all types including the sleek modern ones helps so much that thermostats can be raised by as

>> good mornd monday morning to you. sun coming up. going to be humid in some areas. we'll check the forecast with christina. 5:22 now. a crew of the last space shuttle flight will be arriving at kennedy space center today. it will deliver parts and supplies to the international space station during their 12-day mission. space shuttle "atlantis" is scheduled to lift off july 8.

the flight will mark the end of the three-decade old shuttle program. until commercial rockets are ready the u.s. will rely on russia's program. >> close call for a bomb squad officer in thailand. a bomb exploded in front of him and caught on tape. the officer was trying to open the passenger door of that parked car when you saw it there the bomb exploded. closed-circuit television shows the bomb knocking the officer to the ground. he was able to get up and walk away. unhurt. police later found an improvised explosive device in the car. the bombing was one of three attacks by suspected muslim militants on government offices in southern thailand over the weekend. >> in china, a little girl's lucky to be alive after a passerby saved her from certain death. a woman saw the 2-year-old dangling from the 10th floor of an apartment building. she realized the girl was going to fall and reached out and caught her before hitting the

ground. that little girl survived but is listed in critical condition. her rescuer suffered a fractured arm. the girl woke up from a nap, she crawled to the window before eventually falling out. >> number of hack attacks to tell you about this morning including horrifying vandalism on a twitter account belonging to fox news. it's kind of amazing what they said about our own president and they want to clear the word that president obama is alive. scott mcgrew joins us with the details. >> you're seeing this fox news account called fox news politics. someone we presume a hacker has sent out messages claiming that president obama was attacked. that's not true. these messages are too disturbing to discuss. absolutely not true. not only are these going out as official fox news updates but they have been going out for hours. the company appears to be unable to regain control of its own account. apple has also been hacked.

well, according to hackers. a new splinter group calling itself anti-security or anti-sec claims responsibility for a very small hack of apple servers. the group almost sounds apologetic saying it has better things to do than hacking apple. an interesting article in "the new york times" over the weekend makes a valid point. companies like twitter got tax breaks to stay in the city with hopes that their offices will help reinvigorate the neighborhoods. but twitter and other companies give out so many services to employees that local businesses may not benefit. for instance, twitter plans this giant gourmet cafeteria, where everything is going to be free. >> why would you go out and pay at a local business. >> why would you open a local business, a restaurant across the street from twitter if what you are competing with is free. >> don't some of these companies offer haircuts that come in, massages. >> oil changes, car washington washes. if all of this is free what is

back. we're so happy. >> thank you very much. 5:29. we're following a violent night in the east bay. police and sheriff deputies investigating four shootings in richmond. at least one man died. christie smith joins us live from richmond with an update this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we have new information for you now, confirming three people dead and four separate shootings overnight on the streets of richmond. all of the victims men under 30 years old. the youngest victim just 19 years old. i spoke with richmond police this morning. they say they are not sure what's behind this but they are looking into the possibility that at least some of these shootings may be gang related. all of this gun fire happened really fast. the first at 8:30 as the sun was going down, a man was shot on ohio avenue near 39th. he's expected to survive. then two hours later, the sheriff's department telling us

in north richmond near west ruby avenue two men shot, one of them killed. the victim there, 28 years old, both of them north richmond residents. less than 30 minutes later on the 3200 block of center, a 19-year-old man was shot and killed while sitting in his car. police telling us he had just finished visiting friends when he was killed. then ten minutes later two more people shot. this time near mcdonald avenue including a 27-year-old man who was killed. a police spokesperson says the three shootings are still under investigation. of course they are asking witnesses to please come forward. i asked if any wan was arrested and they say no. live in richmond, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:31. also in richmond a search is on for a pickup truck drive here ran from the scene of a deadly crash. happened around 5:00 yesterday morning on east bound interstate 80 near carlson boulevard. a three-car wreck shut down all

lanes of the interstate. the driver in one of the cars died. another driver was hurt and taken to the hospital. a passenger in the pickup truck was also hurt but the driver got out and ran away from the scene. >> richmond police searching for two men who ganged up on a 67-year-old man and robbed him. it happened near third street around 12:30 in the afternoon. the two men followed the man from a store, they pushed him and he fell forward, hurting his hands and face and blacking out from that fall. the suspects took the man's beer and $2 in cash and ran away. police are looking at surveillance video to help find those men. >> shooting at a b.a.r.t. station leave as man dead and two police officers on administrative leave. today in the bay's marla tellez joins us live in san francisco with the latest on this latest shooting. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. still many unanswered questions about what happened here at the civic center station.

about 9:30 last night b.a.r.t. officers respond after getting reports of what they call a wobbly drunk on the platform. two officers responded, they say they found this man holding a knife, murltiple shots were fired. not much is known about the man other than he is white. b.a.r.t. officials say broken glass and more than one knife were found at the scene. and the officer who fired the shots suffered cuts and bruises. we spoke to the chief communications director for b.a.r.t. he says this is the sixth officer-involved shooting in b.a.r.t.'s history that resulted in injury or death, since oscar grant in 2009. >> probably the most notorious officer-involved shooting. we've done a lot to make changes including updating policies and procedures, sending officers to

a lot more training, we've been -- we about tripled the amount of training our officers receive now. three times as much training. >> reporter: san francisco police, they have stepped in which is standard procedure, to carry out the criminal investigation. exactly what happened and what caused the officer to shoot is still being investigated. b.a.r.t. is handling its own investigation to see if the officers followed appropriate protocol. the officers as laura mentioned, they are on standard administrative leave this morning. immediately the civic center station was closed. it's been closed since about 9:30 last night. b.a.r.t. service is going to resume as of 8:00 this morning. when it does it's going to do so on sunday service because of the fourth of july holiday. laura, b.a.r.t. is holding a 10:30 news conference for the latest information on this investigation. >> thank you very much. we'll continue to follow that this morning.

meantime t ntsb is looking to what caused a small plane to make an emergency landing on interstate 280 in woodside. it crashed into a car. the cessna 210 plane lost its engine power last night, forcing it to land on the freeway. the pilot couldn't slow the plane down in time so it hit the rear of a moving car. luckily the driver of the car was not hurt. certainly startled. the car was damaged but the plane was not. >> ntsb also investigating the crash of a crop-dusting helicopter in an east bay corn field. the copter was flying 20 to 30 feet off the ground outside of brentwood yesterday when it went down. the pilot is expected to be all right but was taken to the hospital as a precaution to get checked out. luckily no one else was hurt. >> 5:35. a bill on cell phone privacy could reach the governor's desk. senator mark leno introduced the

legislation. the court said during the ruling in january people arrested lose their rights to privacy on whatever they are carrying. the measure cleared the senate in june, it is now waiting on a vote from the assembly. >> 5:36 now. a lot of folks want to know what the temperature will be for the barbecues and if we'll see clearing for the fireworks. >> both are looking good. if you've got to get your barbecue on, do it early because it's going to be hot. san francisco, you are fair game all day. 77 degrees, that's it in the city. high pressure still in control of our weather pattern and it will be as we head throughout the first part of the week. we're sandwiched between two substantial systems. we have this area here, this is high pressure, you can see this moisture wrapping around 18 clockwise fashion. that's the monsoonal flow they are accustomed to in the south. some of that is going to come far enough to the north where we see some of the humid air move

into the south bay, so downright sticky as we head through tomorrow, even wednesday in the south bay. and then we've got this area of low pressure that's going to dig in as we head through wednesday and thursday. that's our friend. that's going to drop our temps to the 80s even inland, 70 degrees now in concord, 60 in hayward, 59 in san mateo. comfortable toward the coast f. you wake up in san jose, not too bad. i think the warmest spot across the bay area like yesterday will be in the east bay, 81 in san jose as you break for lunch. 60 in san francisco and 83 degrees in santa rosa. here are your highs. 99 in fairfield and livermore. concord 97. 92 in san jose, 95 in gilroy. if you want to see those changes, stay tuned for just a minute longer. we have the seven-day coming up. back to the person i'm happy she's back zlxt thank you, sweetie. aren't you sweet. i think i owe you lunch or breakfast, don't i. >> let's do it. >> 5:37. san francisco's giving soccer

more operating boats are drinking. tracie potts live in washington to show us a growing problem and how authorities are cracking down. good morning. >> laura, good morning. people who are drinking on california waterways today may want to stay away from the coast guard. they are joining a national campaign called operation dry water on the lookout for people who are intoxicated on the water. it is just as dangerous and just as illegal as drinking while driving. they call it bui, boating under the influence. in california, last year there were 15 alcohol-related boating accidents, 17 people got hurt. four people died. california's legal blood alcohol limit for boating, same as for driving, .08. over 200 people who were arrested in california last year

for drinking and -- or drinking and boating i should say. here's the problem. the heat, the sunlight, the wind, the movement of the boat, can exaggerate the effects of alcohol in some cases not even people don't even realize how intoxicated they are, so experts say that's one reason you want to be careful. they found, laura, that attitudes toward boating while drinking are very similar to what we saw with drunk driving 25 years ago. >> got to play it safe no matter how you celebrate. thank you. fireworks fans, lots of fourth of july shows happening around the bay area today. you can catch it in san francisco, the city's fireworks display, going to happen on the northeast water front from aquatic front to pier 39 starting at 9:30. the pier at the foot of van ness

avenue will be closed to the public. boats will not be allowed to enter the lagoon from 1:00 in the afternoon until 11:00 at night. in oakland bring your kids to a family friendly celebration at jack london square, there will be a lot of activities including a petting zoo, hula hoop dancing and music. it's all free. in los gatos families get together for a tribute to bay area soldiers who served in iraq or are currently there. one family will honor their daughter who was deployed in may. she left behind her 6-month-old son and her husband. names of soldiers will be read and their families honored at noon. that's all happening at los gatos high school. >> in mountain view the 25th annual fourth of july fireworks spectacular happens tonight. it will feature the san francisco symphony at shoreline amphitheater. it starts at 8:00 and that one is free as well.

should be fun. plenty of places to see the fireworks including the ones on the screen. san jose giants have fireworks immediately following tonight's game so if you are close to municipal stadium catch that show for free. and cupertino, fireworks start at 9:30, launched from the high school. concord's fireworks start at 9:30 at dave brubeck park. san ramon's show starts at 9:30 at san ramon central park. and in marin county, you can see the show at the fairgrounds at 9:30. a little something for everyone. >> and because today is a holiday we remind you you may have a tough time gettinger rands done. federal, state and city offices closed, so are banks and post offices. no mail service, no bills in the mail. there's your gift. now all local tran sis agencies run on holiday schedules, but probably modified so many of them offer extra service so you can get to some of the great fireworks shows that we're talking about this morning.

today we're celebrating america's independence. it's a special date for yoon unique animal. cocoa the gorilla turns 40 today. what makes cocoa unique is her ability to communicate with humans through sign language. since she was one year olds cocoa learned more than 1,000 signs and she can understand 2,000 words of spoken english. to celebrate cocoa's birthday she'll select the winning entries of a contest submitted by fans. she deserves cake or something, too, don't you think. a bay area boy scout troop is safe after being trapped by a rushing river. 34 boys part of a larger group stranded on one side of the river in big tree state park. heavy rain caused the water to rise, covering a foot bridge they were using to travel to the main campsite. although they weren't in great danger they came prepared by
