off. our roads show that light traffic. i will think that i do think this is the best time to get those errands done. i know there's a lot of 24-hour stores open, the weather is perfect right now. it's going to get hot later on especially in the east bay. along the peninsula looking pretty good. i've got your full forecast when it comes to the fireworks and we've got a cooldown on the way. we're not going to have to deal with the hot stuff. that's coming up in moments. right now back to laura. >> thank you. we have two big stories we're following this morning. marla tellez is coming up to tell us about a deadly b.a.r.t. police-involved shooting. but first, today in the bay's christie smith joins us with details of a violent night in richmond. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, a very violent night. all of these shootings in a matter of a couple of hours. four different shootings, some in richmond, some in north richmond but in all we're now hearing that four people were

shot and killed. and here with me this morning is besa french. can you walk us through what happened. it seemed to keep going. >> we did have a shooting about 8:30 in south 39th and ohio where one person was shot. that person is expected to survive. we then had a shooting which resulted in a homicide at a little after 11:00 last night. a 19-year-old was shot and killed after visiting some friends in the area of the 3200 block of center avenue. we then had a shooting a few minutes later at about 11:15 at first and mcdonald where one person, 27-year-old, was shot and killed. at that location, a second victim was struck by gunfire but is expected to survive. >> reporter: we're now hearing two people shot and killed in north richmond which is county? >> right. unincorporated richmond area there were two shot in a double homicide in that jurisdiction. >> reporter: so what's going on here? was there any violence, street

level violence leading up to this in the days before? >> it's been relatively quiet this week. we have not had any indications that any of this violence was going to occur. so we are going to be working with the county sheriff's department to try to figure out what exactly is going on and try to stop any future shootings. >> reporter: any arrests in these cases? >> no arrests at this time. >> reporter: obviously asking witnesses to come forward if any one saw or heard anything. >> we want anybody who has information, any witnesses to come forward with that information. >> reporter: thank you very much, with the richmond police department of course. this is still a developing story. as soon as we get new information we'll bring it to you. reporting live in richmond, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 6:03. another story we're following a man is dead after a b.a.r.t. police officer shot and killed him in san francisco. marla tellez joins us live from the civic center station with the latest.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. a dual investigation is under way, san francisco police handling the criminal investigation of it all. b.a.r.t. handling its own investigation to see if the officers followed all of the right procedures. this all happened about 9:30 last night. two officers responded to reports of what they call a wobbly drunk on the platform. they say the man was holding a knife. multiple shots were fired. the man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. b.a.r.t. officials say broken glass and more than one knife were found at the scene. the officer who fired the shots suffered cuts and bruises. the chief communications director for b.a.r.t. says this is the sixth officer-involved shooting that resulted in injury or death since b.a.r.t. began in 1972. the second since oscar grant was shot and killed new year's day 2009. glenn johnson says that case

b.a.r.t. has tripled the amount of training for b.a.r.t. officers. >> it's not that they weren't adequately trained. the judge ruled we were following state standards and they were properly trained then but we wanted to assure they were even better trained since oscar grant. >> reporter: the officers are on standard administrative leave. following the shooting the station here was closed to b.a.r.t. and muni passengers, but that's going to change. b.a.r.t. says service will resume at 8:00 this morning. because of the july 4th holiday trains are going to run on a sunday schedule. laura, in a few more hours b.a.r.t. is going to hold a 10:30 news conference at its headquarters in oakland to give the media the latest on this investigation. >> a lot of people following that. thank you very much, marla. 6:05. this story from mexico, the u.s. coast guard is helping the

mexican navy look for six people missing from a capsized tourist fishing boat. nbc news learned that 44 people were on board the boat. they are tourists from the bay area and washington state. one person has been confirmed dead. 37 people have been rescued so far. we'll of course give you more information as soon as it becomes available to us. >> san francisco police are investigating two other shootings that hospitalized three people. the first happened around 6:00 yesterday night. a man was standing in front of the mcdonald's on fillmore street when someone opened fire. he was hit in the hip but was not seriously injured. he ended up actually taking a cab to the hospital. the second shooting happened around an hour and a half later around ellis and jones. a man was shot in the upper body and a 78-year-old man nearby was hit in the foot. both were rushed to the hospital, a suspect was arrested in that shooting. >> one person is in the hospital recovering from a weekend

shooting in san jose. the shootings happened on the 3200 block of loma verdi drive on saturday night. close to paine avenue. police say the victim was shot several times, rushed to the hospital. they are investigating to see if that one was gang related. >> it is independence day, and celebrations are getting started around the country. and in the bay area, a lot of places banned fireworks because of all of the extreme heat and dry weather. but the fireworks industry still expects to make about $1 billion. some celebrations are over. thousands gathered in philadelphia this weekend. >> i think about our country and what we're going through at the present time, and how we all have to chip in. >> tonight, president obama and his family will celebrate with military veterans at the white house. >> lots of things to do and places to go for this fourth of july across the bay area. there will abrose, white and

blue parade at san jose at 10:00 this morning. it's an old fashioned family style parade, steps off at west carlos and shasta avenue. it's going to end up on the alameda near shasta avenue. among those taking part the mayor chuck reed and his wife. >> speaking of sprayeds, alameda's parade will kick off in a few hours. that parade will start at park street and make its way to webster street. it starts this morning at 10:00. more than 170 entries and 2500 participants will march along the three-mile course. >> in san francisco, for spectacular fireworks display check out the city's waterfront show. it will take place around 9:30 on the northeast water front from aquatic park down to pier 39. municipal pier will be closed to the public, boats will not be allowed to enter aquatic park

just nothing happening out there as you can imagine. a really light flow across the board. high pressure is keeping things nice and hot for today especially inland. very close to the century mark, morgan hill above that century mark like yesterday. we've got cooling on the way to the middle of the week so a couple of hot days to get through. low pressure brings about a strong on shore flow that means fog to the coast, cool marine air and bring our temperatures down to the 80s. better weather on the way. 70 degrees right now in concord. 65 in fairfield and 58 at the coast. as we head through noon about 85 in livermore, 82 in concord and you're up to 88 degrees at noon in fairfield. it's going to be a hot one. make sure you drink lots of water today. 97 degrees in concord. 83 for oakland. oakland and san francisco, even santa cruz, those are my pick cities to watch the fourth of july fireworks go off. this is what we're talking about in terms of your fourth of july forecast. as we head through -- sorry

>> welcome back everyone. happy fourth of july. independence day to you. 6:14 now as we take a live look outside. this is the sunol grade. remember those green hills in january? certainly big brown with all of the heat we've been having. we'll check the forecast coming up in a bit. >> nearly 40 cars went up in flames giving firefighters a battle. that fire started just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon in an overflow hertz rental car lot north of the san francisco airport. look at the damage there. took firefighters more than an hour to gain control of it. nearly 40 cars were damaged or completely destroyed. the fire chief says the wind

made it difficult to fight that fire. it spread quickly because of dry grass. firefighters think that people using fireworks in the area may have started that fire. luckily no one was hurt. >> fireworks by the way, are illegal in south san francisco. >> more trouble for a small san jose school district, for the second time in three years the santa clara county civil grand jury has issued a critical report on the luthder burbank school district. the jury alleges that the district wasted $900,000 on consultants and on the buy-outs of fired superintendents. in the report the jury called for the district to merge with a larger neighbor such as san jose unified. it says trustees governed poorly and conducted business in secret. >> sun burns are the norm during the long hot summer days. dermatologists have tips for finding relief from the pain. kim fisher reports. >> reporter: heather knows the dangers of spending too much

to see the fireworks go off, low 80s. the south bay and the north bay, upper 70s and the peninsula, you might need jacket. a little breeze blowing about 5 to 10 miles per hour. low 60s in the city tonight. this is what we're looking at as we head to the midsection of your week. a little trough of low pressure is going to dip in. that will bring about significant cooling, back to the 80s. we're going to have to get through two muggy days especially the south bay. monsoonal moisture to the north. and that means we could see a little bit of thunderstorm activity right here in the bay area. the best chance will be in the south bay tomorrow afternoon and wednesday afternoon. 65 degrees in livermore, 62 now in san jose. and 60 in hayward. this afternoon 70 degrees, beautiful conditions. be careful driving around the city. we have a lot of people here from out of town, as per usual even more so this weekend. to celebrate our beautiful weather and independence day. 77 at 4:00 p.m. gorgeous conditions. 89 later on in fremont, 92 for

to be a big problem for some 240 boy scouts camping in the sierra in big tree state park. >> the main thing our concern was food and medications that some of the boys may need. >> reporter: the rain caused a river to crest, covering a foot bridge separating the scouts from the main camping area. an emt and registered nurse made it through rugged terrain around the river to the campsite. >> the sheriff's department set up a cable system, a pulley cable system, was able to transfer food across. >> the scouts have three square meals until they can make it back over the river. >> the bridge is visible, it's not visible enough for us to look at the structure, make sure it's sound and safe for our boys to come back across. >> reporter: there is no phone service there but he is communicating with the scouts through his cell phone that is able to connect to an old fashioned hand radio. >> this is dave from the council office for allen young. over. >> reporter: we were able to

talk to the ranger mike hannah. >> we gained access to the other side of the river due to the water levels. >> reporter: it won't be safe enough to cross until thursday. >> you're up in the mountains. it's beautiful. people come in from nevada. they get out of the heat. they come to the mountains. it's parts of the adventure. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> we did hear from some of the boys who said that they -- the best advice was to remain calm, which is what they did. they waited until that water subsided and they were able to cross the bridge. but they are boy scouts. they should get a patch or a medal for that. the battle is brewing in northern california over the giant red wood trees. the department of transportation wants to remove dozens of trees at richardson grove state park in humboldt county. it wants to clear the area so it can realign part of highway 101 which winds through the redwoods. local groups are asking a

federal judge to stop that project. it says the plan would damage root systems and increase traffic and pollution. a ruling is expected next week. >> very narrow escape for a bomb squad officer in thailand. he was knocked down by an explosion. the officer was trying to open the passenger door of that parked car. it exploded. closed-circuit television shows the bomb knocking the officer to the ground. but remarkably he gets up and walks away unhurt. police found an improvised explosive device in the car. the bombing was one of three attacks in southern thailand over the weekend. >> number of hack attacks this morning including horrifying vandalism on a twitter account belonging to fox news. >> fox news appears to have a twitter account called fox news politics and someone we presume a hacker sent out messages on

the account claiming thatment obama was attacked. these are too disturbing to discuss. and they are absolutely not true. mr. obama is perfectly fine. not only are the messages going out as official fox news updates, they have been going out for hours and the company appears unable to regain control of its account. apple has been hacked, this according to hackers. a new splinter group calling itself anti-security claims responsibility for a small hack of apple servers. the group almost sounds apologetic saying it's got better things to do than hack apple. and an interesting article in "the new york times" makes a valid point, companies like twitter got big city tax breaks to stay in san francisco with the hopes that their big offices will reinvigorate the surrounding neighborhoods with new businesses, but twitter and other companies give so many services to their employees,

digits in some bay area cities and very close in the east bay. 99 degrees today in concord. i have the full forecast coming up. back to you. >> thank you. we're also following a shooting in san francisco this morning on a b.a.r.t. platform. fired by police officers. a suspect is dead, two officers on administrative leave. marla tellez joins us live from the b.a.r.t. station where investigators are trying to piece together what happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. it's pretty safe to say when you hear of a b.a.r.t. shooting you can't help but think of the infamous case involving oscar grant and johannas mehserle. here's what we know what happened last night. it all happened about 9:30, two officers, two b.a.r.t. officers responded to reports of what they call a wobbly drunk on the platform at the civic center station. they say the man was holding a knife, multiple shots were fired.

are conducting the criminal investigation, and b.a.r.t. is looking into whether the officers followed proper protocol. immediately following last night's shooting, the b.a.r.t. station here was shut down. that's going to change. in about 90 minutes b.a.r.t. will resume service here in san francisco. that's at 8:00 this morning. but when it does so, if you are a b.a.r.t. rider it's going to be on a sunday schedule today because of the fourth of july holiday. lastly, laura, b.a.r.t. is going to hold a 10:30 news conference in oakland to give the latest on this investigation. lots of unanswered questions this morning. >> definitely. thank you for following it for us, marla. a spike in violence in richmond. police and sheriff deputies are investigating a string of shootings there. chris the smith joins us with an update. good morning. >> reporter: i just spoke with richmond police and we have new information for you. that is that all of the victims here were from the richmond or

north richmond area, all of them under 30 years old. we're also learning some of the names of the victims this morning. and richmond police say that they had really no information on any street level violence happening before this that would lead to such a violent night. these shootings happened close together and just in a matter of hours here. the gunfire started about 8:30 last night at 39th and ohio, one man shot. he is expected to survive. two hours later in north richmond, two people shot, one of them killed. one wounded. then 20 minutes later a 19-year-old man, police releasing his name, rashad bailey shot and kill ond center street. he was sitting in his car and finished visiting friends. ten minutes later another man was shotd shot and killed. darryl duncan.

what's behind this, well, here's what richmond investigators say they are doing. >> we do have a gang unit that is actively pursuing gang members in our city. identifying them, seeing what their patterns are. just active in trying to identify the gang members in our area. we have not had any indication that any of this violence was going top happen. we have not had shootings leading up to this that we think are connected to these homicides. >> reporter: police tell me that they are working with the sheriff's department on these cases because they sor close together in both time and location. so far no arrests in any of these shootings. of course they are asking any one who may have seen anything to give richmond police a call. live in richmond, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 6:35 now. san francisco police are asking for the public's help in solving a 10-year-old murder case.

in 2001 paula bryant was brutally stabbed to death. the 25-year-old was last seen leaving a bar in the area. police released a sketch of a possible suspect. he is described as a white male in his 40s, standing 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds. he has black hair and tattoo of a skull and cross bones on his right arm. a warning from east bay police about a fake donation request. the martinez police officers association says someone is calling people asking for donations on behalf of the family of brian carter. carter was an 11-year veteran of the force who died last month after a about itle with non-hodgkin's lymphoma. the officer does not know of a fund for carter's family. the city is holding a blood drive in carter's name this friday at city hall. the ntsb is looking into what caused a plane to make an emergency landing on 280 in

woodside. it crashed into a car. the cessna 280 lost its engine power last night. forcing it to land on the freeway. the pilot couldn't slow it down in time so it hit the rear window of a moving car. luckily the driver wasn't hurt. the driver wasn't damage hurt. >> perfect for a barbecue. >> way past our bed time. good morning to you. you want to remember your pets, too. i'm going to stay home with my pug. high pressure moving in today. that's going to keep things on the toasty side inland. but if you're waking up with us this morning from the city of san francisco, a gorgeous day on tap. i'm only forecasting highs in the upper 70s, about 77 degrees today in the city. take a look at what's headed our way. monsoonal moisture to contend with, especially in the south bay and i think the southern most portion of the peninsula will see a little bit of the

cloud cover and feel that humid air push in tomorrow as this really, really strong ridge of high pressure amplifies so. we'll see this come up to the north. impacting the southern most portion of our viewing area. you want to keep that in mind for tomorrow. low pressure firmly in control as we head through the second half of the week. that's going to drive in on shore flow. a nice trough here is going to ride to the north but it will kick up the on shore flow which will push in the marine air thursday and friday. the temperature falls back in the 80s. there is some relief from the heat. you want to be careful with your fireworks out there because yes, this is fire season in the bay area. 70 degrees in concord, you're at 65 in livermore and 60 in hayward. throughout noon about 85 degrees in livermore so if you want to get anything done early even picking up hot dog buns might want to do it now. of course your car inside with the windows rolled up.

keep everyone safe this fourth of july. >> let's hope that happens. thank you very much, tracie. the casey anthony murder case is expected to go to the jury today. the state is presenting its rebuttal to the defense's closing statements, actually right now. afterwards the case will be in the hands of the jurors. anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter caylee. yesterday the lead prosecutor described a web of lies leading up to the little girl's death. he gave a day by day narrative of how he believes it happened while the defense attorney returned to his overriding theme. >> difficult for you to find the truth. then this case is not proven. >> she knew that night she would be in the arms of her boyfriend and that caylee would be dead. >> think she's a lying no good slut then -- >> anthony's defense attorney says that anthony's lies and

questionable behavior are the results of a dysfunctional family. he challenged state witnesses, evidence and every key element of the prosecution's case. >> 6:44 now. the crew of the last space shuttle flight will be arriving at kennedy space center today. it will deliver parts and supplies to the international space station in their 12-day mission. shuttle "atlantis" is scheduled to lift off july 8th. the flight will mark the end of the three-decade-old shuttle program. until commercial rockets are ready, the u.s. will rely on russia's space program to carry american astronauts into space. >> san francisco at home today playing the division rivals, the padres. giants coming off a loss in detroit. bats not as fired up as on saturday when the team scored 15 runs. the tigers beat the giants, 6-3. what a way to end an otherwise great day.

four san francisco giants make the all-star roster. tim lincecum, matt cain, ryan vogel song and brian wilson. the first time giants had four on the team since 1993. the first time that those all-stars have all been pitchers. way to go. and the a's play a day game this fourth of july hosting the mariners at o.co. gonzalez on the mound allowing one run in seven innings. he was named to the american league all-star team. >> it was a secret goal of myself. i wasn't trying to announce it or anything like that but i'm pretty sure everyone goes out trying to make the all-star team, trying to win the playoffs and you know, try to win a cy young if you're a pitcher. there are so many awards that you want to do as an athlete. but my goal was trying to pitch, trying to stay healthy and at least give our team a chance to win. >> good for him.
