for a lot of you no doubt. it's 6:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get a look at that forecast. what to wear, christina loren? >> oh, boy. you know how hard that question is around here this time of year. waking up in the city, you might actually need a sweater this morning if you are sensitive to the cold. but if you can tolerate the low 50s, you're doing okay so far. it's going to be hot inland again but this is the last day. with any triple digits on the temperature map. i think that morgan hill will hit 100 down from 105 yesterday. it was a really warm fourth of july. some cities are going to be warmer today. i'll tell you what's making for pretty significant changes as we head further into the week. that's coming up. right now let's check your drive. it's light and that's what we're still noticing this morning. you can see from the bay bridge toll plaza no problems yet. we'll let you know when that changes. 6:01. about the time people hit the highway. back to you.

>> doesn't look like the metering lights are on yet. news from the east bay, three separate wild fires have officials skeptic on how they started. christie smith is live with the details. >> reporter: good morning, laura. three grass fires in essentially the same area. this grass is really, really dry. it's tall. so enwhether it burns it's windy and it gets going. when i got here at about 4:00 this morning there were fireworks being shot up in the sky behind those homes over there. this morning i wanted to show you what's left here of the fire that burned here, blackened that area right over by the railroad tracks. big flames that created quite a sight. the first started about 9:29, then 10:05 on the port chicago highway where we are here, and then 11:00 over on wheldon lane.

all in the bay point area. some people were celebrating the fourth of july and setting off their own fireworks, and we asked the fire chief about a possible connection. >> there are a lot of fireworks out, our fire marshals are out trying to determine what the cause of the fires are. obviously that's one of the reasons that we try and -- we don't have sane and safe and sane fireworks here in the county, they are illegal. that's one of the reasons to make sure we don't have these types of fires. >> the fire did burn very close to some railroad tracks that are nearby. we're told some trains had to slow down. it also burned the the fire chief says close to a garage in the area. at this point we're still waiting on word for how many acres were burned. for now, everything is out. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay". >> good news there. san jose firefighters will be keeping an eye out for hot spots

on communication hill after a grass fire there. it happened last night about 9:30. crews managed to contain it about a half hour later. 20 firefighters and six engines had to respond to that one. they don't know the cause but so far looks like no homes or buildings were damaged and no one hurt. firefighters have not named a cause for the fires as i mentioned. they have been warning how dangerous illegal fireworks can be. we have some video to prove it. >> isn't that frightening. someone sent us this video of illegal fireworks in san jose last night. you can see it didn't go as planned. quite frightening. luckily no one was hurt. and illegal fireworks is anything that explodes or leaves the ground. many counties don't allow them. >> 6:04. a santa rosa father of three is presumed dead after drowning in

the russian river. 30-year-old juan leone could not stay above the water when he tried to help his girlfriend. a strong current pulled them out further. a kayaker is credited with rescuing patricia but after a lengthy search for leone investigators had to call in divers to start a recovery operation. the couple was not the only one to get caught in the current. rescuers had their hands full helping other swimmers. >> we've had four different kids, there is a little bit of a ripple, get caught in it and almost drown. we've had to pull all of them out of the water. the advice is if you can't swim don't get in the water. and if you've got kids put some flotation device on them. >> leone is considered missing until his body is recovered. >> 6:05. investigators are now asking for the public's help as they piece together the trail of events that led to a man being shot and killed on a b.a.r.t. platform.

police received reports on sunday night that a man was drunk carrying an open bottle of alcohol. officers confronted the man and fired shots. police say one of the officers had a taser but did not use it. police are looking at surveillance video and questioning witnesses. they are asking any one who may know more about the shooting to give them a call. we've got encouraging news on bryan stow's condition. the giants fan is still in critical condition but his fever has been down since the 29th and he doesn't have infections. it's really great news as his family says doctors may be able to perform a procedure. his family plays music, reads cards and talking to him. stow was brutally beaten outside dodger stadium on march 31st. >> 6:06. the city of santa clara hoping to make progress on the proposed

49ers stadium. marla tellez is close to the site of the proposed stadium. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. behind me here this is the proposed site for the 49ers stadium. not a lot to show you other than really a big vacant parking lot. we're off great america parkway, here is where the 49ers practice, this is their practice facility so it makes sense to put it so close in terms of relation there. but at tonight's council meeting the stadium authority will address several items including the next phase of design work and marketing and loan agreements to raise money for construction. officials are going to talk about selling suites which is interesting considering all of the back and forth bargaining and negotiating linked to the proposal since the beginning. but the san jose "mercury news" is reporting they have already sold $138 million of luxury

boxes. there are 165 suites compared to 77 at candlestick. another interesting note on tonight's agenda t stadium authority has identified a concessionaire. they are thinking food and beverage. one woman who is confident is the assistant city manager, carol mccarthy. i have sent here an e-mail hoping to get the latest in terms of cost and a time line. that seems to be changing. i can tell you the cost is estimated at $950 million to $1 billion to build the stadium, to be completed by 2015. >> certainly moving ahead in other areas, aren't they. thank you very much. it's 6:08. a tgi friday's restaurant paying tribute to a former manager killed while working more than

flow. foggy starts especially toward the coast. then comfortable afternoons. in the south bay, a little monsoonal moisture coming up from the south. this is what we typically see and mostly impacts southern california. rarely does it get as far to fresno and bakersfield in the san joaquin valley. for us enough moisture from the south for significant changes. humid days ahead. going to see cloud cover, maybe even a couple of isolated thunderstorms as the unstable air pushes in. we're looking good. it won't reach the north bay. 54 novato and 54 in san francisco. by noon. beautiful, a thin veil of clouds. 70 degrees, mild. we'll found out at 79 degrees.

up in a live report at 630 chock. >> seven boaters still missing off the coast of baja california. they were among the 44 people, many from the bay area, thrown into the waters off the sea of cortez early sunday morning. their 100-foot fishing boat was tossed upside down in an electrical storm. m monica dean is live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. a tragic story here. at daylight, san diego-based coast guard air crews were expected to resume their efforts to look for those missing men. daylight now so we expect them to launch their helicopters at any time now. overnight the mexican navy extended its search of the waters, looking for those seven people, hoping 4 survivors. yesterday two coast guard helicopters flew many miles over the sea of cortez searching for

the seven americans after their boat capsized. 27 american fishermen mostly from northern california were aboard the vessel. one american is confirmed dead. 35 of the people were scooped up by other fishing boats and war ships, some clinging to life preservers and coolers for as long as 16 hours. the erik was less than a day in its fishing voyage when it began taking on water. 16 crew members were on board. and this morning a coast guard fix wing c-130 will replace the helicopter in the aerial search efforts. the boat capsized less than two miles from the shore but the navy has extended its search to 60 miles so that's an expansion overnight. today, divers are gearing up to go under water, searching the sunken wreckage, hoping to find a sign of possible bodies that may be trapped inside that sunken ship.

we're live in downtown san diego at coast guard headquarters. laura, back to you. >> can you imagine some of the survivors will have. thank you very much. we have an update to breaking news we brought you yesterday. 26 people without a home after a three-alarm fire tore through their apartment building. it sent one person to the hospital. it happened yesterday morning in the glenn park neighborhood. the fire quickly tore through the first and second floors of the home and spread to others as you see nearby. six buildings were affected. four apartments are considered uninhabitable and the cause of that fire is under investigation. >> warmer temperatures will prevail again. want to check the forecast with christina. >> that story is a reminder we are well into our fire seen season so you want to practice good fire safety, especially this time of year always but especially right now. let's talk about what you can expect. downright hot everywhere.

but the coast. if you can get to half moon bay today, right around 73 degrees. just beautiful weather. usually it's cool there. but we're going to get really nice weather out there today. you can't see alcatraz this morning. it's right there but you can hardly see it because we have thick clouds moving in. that will be the case probably for the next couple of hours. mostly clear over the city of san francisco. let's get to it. you can see high pressure is in control, taking the storm trackthe north. no rain chances from the gulf of alaska, what we could see something that we don't usually see, rain showers courtesy of thunderstorms from the monsoonal flow that's just to our south. typically, this impactings southern california, palm springs gets really muggy even los angeles this time of year because of this wraparound moisture wrapping around high pressure. for us, i mean, the south bay, yeah, it's going to get muggy.

as of today intensifying tomorrow and especially thursday when high pressure will be at its peek strength. the further it reaches up here it's impacting places like bakersfield and fresno. to the north it amplifies, that's going to dictate how unstable our air mass becomes and dictate the 0 tension for thunderstorms. i think we'll see a couple of isolated thunderstorms as we head through this afternoon in the south bay, tomorrow up to the east bay. and then possibly up to fairfield. i think the north bay areas, though, you'll stay free and clear. dry up in novato. 54 degrees. 79 later in san francisco. a beautiful day in san francisco. 95, though, in gilroy, 99 livermore. and 99 degrees in fairfield. where are we headed? cooler weather on the way. 86 degrees by friday. a gorgeous weekend. and laura, we got a giants came in town tonight. the forecast coming up but sorry to see them lose last night.

"atlantis" is set to lift off friday on the 12-day mission to the international space station. the four-member crew will deliver parts and supplies, this the last shuttle miss for the space agency. >> hackers are sending out a warning to apple users and google is making changes to its search engine. scott takes a look. >> good morning. as any hollywood starlet can tell you once you reach a certain level of fame you become a target. that happened to apple, long the company whose gear you could buy and not worry about hackers and viruses, apple is now a target as well.

the the group anonymous saying it broke into an apple server, hasn't taken personal data yet but wants mac users to know they are on the anonymous radar. google changing things when it comes to real time search. it removed a couple of features that let you type something in and get real time updates from twitter and facebook. this doesn't necessarily mean that google is severing ties to the hot companies, look for real time search to reappear somewhere on the new google plus that is being tested. speaking of red hot silicon valley companies we're waiting to see a price range for the zynga ipo, the social gamer coming up with an ipo filing that plans to pull in $1 billion. this could make linked in look like chicken feed. the stock market. if you have remained in the

officials trying to figure out how they started. christie smith is live. she joins us with the details. >> good morning. three grass fires and basically the same area, just a couple of miles apart. i want to show you what is going on this morning. actually, one ever the fires smoldering a little bit when we got here, there was actually quite an orange glo here this morning. people were setting off fireworks in the area. firefighters can't say for sure whether there is a connection because of all of the fires but they are under investigation. the flames were a show filling the sky with a bright geororang glow. at port chicago highway that's where we are now, then at 11:00 on wheldon lane, even at 4:00 this morning when we got here we saw people, at least the fireworks, still shooting into

the sky here. some trees still smoldering. we talked with a fire chief about what they are looking for. >> there are a lot of fireworks out. our fire marshals are out trying to determine what the cause of the fires are. obviously, that's one of the reasons, we don't have safe and sane fireworks in the county, they are illegal and that's one of the reasons is try to make sure we're not going to have these fires. >> reporter: a lot of the burned area is up near railroad tracks but it also according to fire chief came close to some garages, firefighters spent hours on fire watch overnight. at this point we're still waiting to hear how many acres burned in these fires but the good news is that everything at this hour is out. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. it's 6:33 now. a convicted north bay sex offender is back in jail this morning accused of forcing his way into a hotel room and raping a woman.

the 33-year-old faces rape and assault charges as well as burglary and violating parole. police say he attacked a woman at the villa inn in san ra faefl. the woman said her attacker forced his way in around 4:30 and raped her. she told the desk clerk who called police. when officers arrived, they found williams in the hotel room. williams has previously pled guilty to assault and unlawful sex with a minor. >> caltrain is getting ra ed to mount cameras on the trains, the move intended to document the suicides that happen on the tracks. right now the only information about people who die on the tracks comes from the train's engineers. hast year there were 11 suicides, so far there are nine this year. 70 cameras will run nonstop. their installation will be paid for by a state security grant.

>> garbage rates are about to rise for palo alto, increasing 13% to help fill a $3.7 million hole in the city's refuse fund. the rates increase to $37. palo alto is looking at reducing street sweeping and building smaller recycling centers with limited hours to try to cut some costs. >> in a few years the debris from the devastation of the japanese earthquake and tsunami will make its way to our own coast line. bob is live this morning with a look into the latest findings. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the latest is that it's still going to be a couple of years before debris from the earthquake and tsunami starts hitting the places of santa cruz and other parts of northern california, oregon, washington. 2013, early 2014 is scientists'

best guest. oceanographers with the university of hawaii are expecting the debris to hit the islands by next spring which is one reason why they sor involved in tracking the debris. they released this computer simulation of the journey across the pacific, they base this on wind and ocean currentings. it's slow moving, traveling east at about 10 miles a day. perhaps what's most impressive is its enormity. it encompasses an area approximately 1300 miles long, 350 miles wide. lovely the size of the state of california. the tsunami in march sucked out entire towns, everything, people, homes, cars. scientists do wonder how much will end up on our shores. bodies will likely decompose by then, hots of material will deteriorate or sink. the problem in determining what turns up is that this all maced on speck hags, on the computer

simulation. not observations by people. last week the coast guard met to come up with a game plan how to deal with this potential problem, this possible environmental mess. one idea is have regular sailors, those who cross the pacific on a routine basis, document what they see and report. this will be an issue that environmentalists will be following closely. we'll be seeing beach cleanups possibly and speaking of which there is the monthly beach cleanup. later around 7:00, at mo ran lake pork put on by the surf riders. it's usually on a weekend. since it's the day after, they hold it today. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, bob. speaking of hundreds of families displaced by the earthquake, now getting a three-month sabbatical

in the hawaiian islands. survivors are staying with host families in oahu and you maui. increasing radiation levels making it unsafe to rebuild. more than 200 families applied for the program funded through private donations. >> it's 6:38. i want to check the forecast with christina loren. she has been busy pulling double duty giving us a hook at the morning commute. i know we've got a lot of micro climates. >> laura, if you live in the micro climate encompasses san francisco, you're going to get a treat but elsewhere it's going to be pretty warm even in mountain view. and along the peninsula i'm forecasting the 90s. a warm day across the board. warmer than yesterday in some spots. 3 to 5 degrees warmer on average.

yeah, it was a toasty fourth of july. high pressure kept us fog free making for perfect visibility for watching the fireworks. this is the big change. subtropical moisture creeping in, surging from the south. what we're hooking toward is this ridge will amplify. that's going to drive this moisture to the north. and far enough to where it impacts us in the south bay. even the southern peninsula will likely see isolated thunderstorms. we're watching for that tomorrow into thursday. but we're not going to rule out that chance today. 53 now in santa cruz. 63 in san jose. and 52 degrees now in gilroy. nice start in gilroy. headed to the upper 90s. in places like livermore, fairfield, concord, 79 degrees, i tacked on a couple in an fran. so looking pretty good there. also good on the roadways. let's take to you the south bay, a live look at what's happening out here. absolutely no problems, a smooth

>> welcome back. a good tuesday morning to you. 6:43. some members of congress are taking the government's budget crisis personally. a number of house and senate members have introduced lnllation that would either slash or freeze their 6 figure salaries. tracie potts is live in washington with more. good morning. >> good morning. in case you were wondering your member of congress in general makes 1$174,000 a year, some of the leaders like nancy pelosi make a little bit more than that. but bottom line now they are looking at perhaps freeze or slashing their salaries as they deal with the budget crisis.

somewhat symbolically to let americans know that they are taking a hit as well. they haven't slashed salaries since the great depression, they had been frozen for the last two years going into 2012. now they are looking at what to do for 2013. here is an interesting point, though. half the people who work in this building on capitol hill make $1 million or more, are worth $1 million or more. for example, the wealth of senator dianne feinstein, she is worth $77 million. senator boxer, worth almost $3.5 million. there are other members of congress who are worth a lot less, some of them with a negative net worth. but the changes that they are talking about would be a few thousand dollars hit untheir salary. >> big money you're talking about. thank you. 6:44 now. a couple of bay area universities are teaming up to come up with what could be a breakthrough on the study of autism.

researchers at uc san francisco and stanford studied a large group of twins and found a mother's age and health may play a larger role in whether a child is autistic. before now it was thought that genetics played a major role. a study found a higher than expected rate in fraternal twins, ones that don't share the same genes. experts say stress, diets and medications could increase the risk of autism in a child. a scientific group is offering the great smoky mountain national park on the north carolina/tennessee border. the recession hit the group so hard that it's holding naming rights for $2500 donation. more than 7,000 new species have been discovered in the park since 2000. the famous people from president

it's more the fun stuff, food and beverage, talking about selling the suites. the "mercury news" reporting that the stadium authority has sold $138 million of luxury boxes, makes you wonder how much a box goes for. there are 165 suites compared to 77 currently at candle stick. an interesting note on tonight's agenda, the stadium authority has identified a concessioner and this group will help design the food, beverage and merchandise areas in the 68,500 seat stadium. it's expected to cost 9 left to $8 billion. a hefty price tag. 114 million from public contributions. to be completed by 2015. of course we're going to cover

nut won on coney island. he crushed the competition by eating 62 hot dogs. in ten minutes. just one short of his own personal record. but what you might not know is that former champ kobayashi, he ate 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes. he did with it the nathan's contest live on a screen next to him. major league eating banned him the last two years. 69 hot dogs not only beat chestnut but beat the record by one dog. the president of major league called it a farce, major league eating. there is a president of that. he said the champion of the world is crowned on coney island, always has been, always will be. kobayashi puts a tin crown on his head and calls himself king.
