>> it was an airplane. i ran down here to make sure they were okay and check on my dautders too. >> a small plane crashes into a community hospital in watsonville. at least two people are dead. investigators on the scene trying to figure out what went wrong. >> more than a month after a local missing nursing student goes missing, her family is still holding out hope. i'm live in hayward this morning. how you can help in the search efforts. >> back home safe and sound, the first fisherman rescued after the boat capsized returned to

the bay area. we're there for the emotional reunion. a look at the bay bridge. it's friday, july 8, and this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. i'm scott mcgrew. it's 4:30. rob mayeda is in, according to christina, her first day off ever. she needs one. >> always good to see you. 4:30 not so much. the weather this morning, some thick fog that might slow your commute across the golden gate bridge. warming up quickly by noon, we'll see mid 80s by lunch time and here you go, high temperatures places like fairfield and concord and livermore in the low 90s. 84 san jose. 68 in san francisco, cool or cooler around santa cruz, 75. we'll see continued cooling going into the weekend and we'll show you that in the full forecast in a few minutes. now for your friday morning commute, hopefully this is

friday look, 880 both directions looking quiet. we should expect this early in the morning. a check of the maps shows a little bit of fog-related slowing heading southbound across the golden gate bridge. that fog is thick on the coast so it could slow you down along your highway 17 commute up over the summit this morning. >> rob, the faa and ntsb are on the scene of a small plane crash in watsonville. the plane crashed into a building adjacent to a hospital, and this is new video of investigators as they examine the crash site. you can see the plane is almost unrecognizable. witnesses say it had just taken off from watsonville airport yesterday when suddenly it nosedived. it crashed into the parking lot, skidded into the building and burst into flame, killing the two people on board. the community hospital is across the street from the airport runway at nielsen and airport boulevard. one experienced pilot who has flown out of the airport said the pilot may have been trying to avoid low cloud cover.

climbing too quickly can reduce the lift over the wing. >> what it appears in this case is that he took off, climbed to the ceiling, and then couldn't see so got scared, dropped down and tried to do a left bank and come around to land. and then at some point buried it. >> luckily, nobody on the ground was hurt. the search continues meanwhile for missing nursing student michelle le last seen in late may in hayward where she was taking an evening nursing class. today in the east bay, elise is live where her family will hold a fund-raiser. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. more than a month after that nursing student went missing her family is holding out hope she will be found alive. they are going to host a fundraising event later this morning. you can see they are open here and putting up signs letting

everyone know about the event. the restaurant here will donate 20% of sales to the ongoing effort to find the 26-year-old nursing student and 100% of that will go to searching efforts for le. she was last seen may 27 at kaiser hospital in hayward. le is 5'6", wearing her white nursing scrub when's she went missing. her family is also hoping a reward will help find her. they offer a $65,000 reward for any information leading to her safe return. hayward police are investigating her disappearance as a homicide but again, her family believes she is still alive. the event starts at 11:00 a.m. this morning and goes until 10:00 this evening. all you have to do is show up here at the sizzler here in hayward, tell your server that you are here for michelle's case and part of the money that you spend will go to finding her. family members and friends should be arriving here any minute. we'll hopefully hear from them in the next hour.

>> thank you. 4:34 now. a u.s. coast guard plane will resume its search for the people missing from a sunken fishing boat. the plane will search a 300 square mile area off the coast of mexico. seven people still missing after the tourist boat sank early sunday. the coast guard hopes that some people may have survived in the warm water and calm sea. relatives of the missing hope -- or mexican officials and tcoast guard will put together a dive team. >> we want to believe that no one wasn't able to get out. but that someone wasn't able to get out for which ever families that would affect, it would bring closure. >> the coast guard says it searched 1400 square miles of ocean and land since the mexican navy asked for help. >> we have wind and waves and when all of us wept in the water the waves were breaking over the top of our head.

>> one of the survivors there, the first men rescued are back home. now they are sharing emotional stories. jean elle looks at some of the stories and who they say is to blame. >> a homecoming for four fishermen. >> i had the cook latched on my arm trying to climb up my head. i grabbed an ice chest. i pulled his hand off of my arm and i put it on the ice chest and said you're okay, you have a life jacket. >> david says it was chaos in the water as fishermen scrambled in the pitch black darkness for anything that would float. >> another man didn't have a life jacket, i don't remember his last name. his first name is bob. he grabbed onto the ice chest. we had two. i happened to notice that it was my ice chest, and inside my ice chest was another personal flotation device. >> he swam for 8 1/2 hours before reaching land and being rescued.

warren spent 20 hours in the water. >> i was in the water 20 hours. and we had numerous fishing boats pass us. >> despite growing fear his small group wasn't giving up. >> we were losing hope. we were prepared for another night, you know, we were prepared to stay another night out there. but i'm talking about the will, the will to live, we were just paddling and paddling. >> pete says he was lucky to find a small boat and a cooler that got him through the next 14 hours. >> two life vests in there and a bottle of water. >> each man has a different story of survival to tell. they all are pointing an angry finger at the boat captain. >> he should be prosecuted to the fullest. that's criminal what he was doing. >> we got on the boat all the crew had life jackets on, all survived and we lost 25% of our fishermen. >> seven men are missing and one is confurmed dead. jean elle, today in the bay.

>> tragic and deadly accident at an a's game in texas. a fan died after falling head first out of the stands in front of his own son. the fall took place in the second inning at the texas rangers ballpark. the rangers outfielder josh hamilton picked up a foul ball, tossed it in the stands. we're not going to show it. that's when the fan reached over and fell to the ground. he hit a metal cross beam on the way down. he died later at a hospital. >> the shuttle "atlantis" fueled up ready for launch. a look at kennedy space center where despite possible bad weather, you see cloud cover there, nasa is getting read the try to launch "atlantis." there is a 70% chance of thunderstorms and rain will delay the launch. it's supposed to lift off after 8:00 our time. "atlantis" will be the final shuttle to lift off from kennedy. when it returns it will be retired. >> well, i don't know, does rob have a florida forecast? >> we do. >> i kind of figured you did, you nasa fan.

>> yeah, we're kind of science nerds. being in florida you have to worry about the weather. this morning so far not bad. we've got a lot of moisture out of the south so the latest update as they send some flights in and around cape canaveral to see both, not just the weather at the launch but possibly in case the shuttle needs to make an return return they have to look arounds the region to see if there is not too much wind shear. things still going, they are going to keep the countdown rolling. hopefully you'll see live coverage of that liftoff with the shuttle "atlantis." to the west coast, a trough moving in, so what this means we'll see a stronger sea breeze. we're seeing it out on the coast. fully as we go through the weekend we're going to see more ocean air conditioning. that's going to lead our temperatures for our inland spots drop down more so come tomorrow. today still 90s inland out by livermore and fairfield. close to 90 in concord, mid 80s san jose. your summer micro climates back

again. 67 san francisco. 83 in santa rosa for places further away from the bay you'll see numbers in the 90s around sacramento. reno toasty but things are going to cool down. you see it in the forecast. stronger sea breeze, morning fog and probably drizzle at times as we make our way into looks like sunday and monday you'll see the numbers really starting to come down. your morning commute, this time looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. the approach wide open this early in the morning. another look at your east bay commute as you drop out of the north bay around the delta, also the benicia bridge looking good, travel times on schedule including highway 4, not too bad, one of the spots that does tend to get busy but right now still friday light. scott. >> rob, thank you for doing double duty. former a's manager dead this morning. we'll remember dick williams coming up. >> it's a theft of opportunity where somebody who is willing to take the risk can make a large

in. rob's in today. we'll check with him in a second. members of oakland's police officers union voted overwhelmingly yesterday to approve concessions to avoid layoffs. under the agreement officers will take home 9 to $15,000 less each year, over the next four years. and they are also giving up two holidays per year. reducing the pay of new officers, and raising the retirement age from 50 to 55. in exchange, the city, which has laid off 80 officers last year, agreed it new lay off more, or have any furloughs over the next four years. stocks rallied yesterday after strong retail sales and weekly jobs report. to find out if the rally will continue we'll turn to nicole lapin. welcome back. good morning. >> thank you. good morning. futures a little higher but flat as investors await the big report of the day which is the june jobs numbers that comes out in about 45 minutes. after getting knocked down in

may the job market likely picked itself up as companies increased hiring. forecasts looking for 125,000 new jobs last month. unemployment is seen holding steady at 9.1%. europe markets are higher. wall street closed up following a stronger than expected hiring. the dow gaining 93 to recap, 12,719 is where we closed. the nasdaq to 2872. and mortgage rates rise for the first time in a month. many banks tie their lending rates to bench mark 10-year notes. the the average rate on a 30 year fixed is 4.6% which is up from 4.51% last week. and a record low of 4.17% that we hit last november. chocolate makers are getting a little bit worried about the rising cost of cocoa.

the largest manufacturer says that could lead to a slowdown in consumption. the company makes chocolate bars for big companies the likes of nestle's and hershey's. prices hit a 32-year high in march. so, may be good to stock up this weekend. just saying. >> will do. thank you. have a great weekend. 4:46. platinum rhodium and palladium, precious metals in a car that are attracting thieves. vicki says the crooks come from as far as stockton to prey on drivers. >> this is what they want. >> reporter: david wallace sees the frustration weekly. car owners who wake up to find their catalytic converters gone. >> they are reusing the platinum and rhodium. >> you can't drive without these. >> absolutely not. it's part of the smog log you have to have on your vehicle.

>> it's a theft of opportunity where somebody who is willing to take the risk can make a large amount of money in a short time. >> reporter: this inspector spent years on the auto theft detail. he says thieves can get up to 300 buck at a metal recycling yard for each converter, primarily because of the platinum inside. despite state laws requiring recyclers to get photo i.d.s and keep records of the sellers some look the other way. >> in the past i arrested people that come from as far as sacramento, stockton, the central valley, the east bay. they come here, roam around in pairs. >> reporter: most of the thefts happen overnight. they use a saw, they make two quick cuts and they are off with the converter. how often is it happening? look at these police logs. they list 24 thefts in nine days in april and may. toyota four runners were popular. >> there has been an uptick in

this type of crime recently in the mission district, so san francisco and i think also in the richmond district. >> reporter: drivers are vulnerable when they park long term. >> this has three. >> reporter: what can you do? don't bother welding your converter to your car. thieves will cut the thing off. >> keep an alarm on the vehicle. that's probably the best or keep it in the garage. >> reporter: another tip, engrave your plate number on the converter to make it traceable. once that converter is gone it can cost 300 to $800 to get a new one. vicky nguyen, nbc bay area news. >> let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> good morning. pretty nice forecast to get you started on friday morning. we're watching the fog around san francisco. you can see it here from the mountain looking back to the bay bridge. 53 degrees, oakland 52, 880 traffic still fine on this friday light morning so far. we'll see if that continues.

san jose, 59 degrees, not much of a sea breeze reaching the areas around the santa clara valley. salinas valley, thick fog. monterey bay we have thick fog along the coast. temperatures now comfortable, the sea breeze, it's weak to moderate. it will be turning stronger, though, as the ocean air conditioning ramps up it's going to bring our temperatures down as we head into the weekend a side benefit to this will be better air quality. today, east bay, tri-valley locations in the moderate range. this should turn green as we head into the weekend as the sea breeze picks up and our temperatures drop on down. we have this trough approaching the west coast. this is going to scoop up the marine layer, bring in the cooler air. inland areas today probably still low 90s out there, but certainly by sunday we'll see the temperatures cooling down as the sea breeze turns stronger. if you have travel plans we're watching tropical storm calvin which will continue to strengthen but a path that will

take us south of baja california so good news with that system moving away from mexico. around the bay, mid 80s in san jose, 60s san francisco, mid 70s around oakland and 80s and 90s for the inland valleys of the north bay. seven-day forecast shows for the weekend we're going to see a cooling trend that will take us through the beginning of next week. scott. >> all right. thank you much. the a's back at it in texas this evening. hoping to get runs on the board. they were shut out last night, 6-0, rich harden with the loss, the a's and the rangers play again at 5:05. the a's fans mourning the loss of former manager dick williams. the hall of fame manager won two world series with the a's in the 1970s, also led the team to 101 wins and a division title in 1971 before they were swept in the al championship series by baltimore. williams died from an an you're irm at a hospital in henderson, nevada. he was 82 years old. >> people from all over the bay getting ready to lace up the

trip starts with a bus ride out to the pad. thousands of people across the bay area and the nation gearing up for this weekend's avon walk for breast cancer. over the next two days participantses walk nearly 40 miles. last year the event raised more than $5.5 million, the money of course goes to cancer organizations that help people who can't afford treatment they kn need and for research. the space and science center in the bay area, students love to take field trips to, as part of the business deal more than 8700 oakland students visited the center during the school year last year. the center owes $8 million to oakland schools for construction loan so it came up with the plan to offer field trips in exchange. >> now we're going to check rob's traffic. he is doing double duty. mikey fans, don't stress, he will be back.

yosemite campsite reservation and selling them for as much as six times their value. the park has fewer than 500 sites so getting a spot is is already tough. park rangers say if you don't have a reservation stop by the office and put your name on a waiting list in case booked campers don't show up. the park service plans to beef up its site to prevent scalpers from buying everything out. >> it's the end of an era, thousands of fans put up with the rain in london to catch and say farewell to the most famous boy wizard, we're talking harry potter in london. the world premiere of the final installment in the harry potter series. those lucky enough to pack in bid their beloved harry good-bye giving the film a huge thumbs up. >> it was amazing.
