early in preparation. i want to bring in the manager and tell me how this sizzler got involved in this fundraising event for the search for michelle le. >> well, i was contacted by natasha, one of her sorority sisters who was in search of one of the community restaurants to help her out and we were more than thrilled to help her out. we put everything together, we're going to have the fund-raiser today, running all day long, anybody who comes in with the flyers that were handed out or verbally says they are here for the fund-raiser we're going to make sure that's part of the fund-raiser. they are going to do a car wash on friday t 29th also here at sizzler. >> and again, michelle le went missing the end of may and has not been seen since. family members are holding out hope. tell me how the proceeds will go to the search for her. >> they are going to raise the funds, going to use those in the efforts to go out and try to

skidding into the building and then burst into flames. two people on board that plane died. no one on the ground was injured. >> a marin county judge wants to know if suspected serial killer has enough to pay for his co-defense attorney. prosecutors say he is worth $1 million but he says he is too poor to pay for a lawyer. he has decided to represent himself but asked a judge yesterday to provide him with an advisory attorney. the judge agreed and assigned auditors to the case to determine if he has the money to pay for the attorney. if not, marin county will provide him with one. nasois charged with killing four prostitutes. >> the man accused of shooting a community activist will not stand trial. a judge says gregory is incompetent to stand trial. he is accused of shooting david lewis 13 months ago. two court appointed doctors say

elarms is mentally unfit. >> california is gearing up for what could be the largest peace officer layoff in history. the state department of justice currently has 484 sworn officers. but the new state budget eliminates at least 200 officers from d.o.j. community members are upset while agents say the move sends a dangerous message to drug cartels. >> perplexed on why the state would want to do that when they know there's a big issue with drug trafficking from mexico. >> they will have to be on the lookout no. one's coming. we won't be there and local law enforcement is stretched thin. >> for now each agency is trying to scrape together funding from other sources just to keep operating. >> in a few hours space shuttle "atlantis" is expected to lift off from kennedy space center ending an era for nasa.

if the weather holds today's launch will be the final space shuttle mission. marla tellez is monitoring the situation but is joining us from mountain view with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. certainly while all eyes are on florida this morning, here in the bay area we're so lucky to have the nasa ames research center. behind me this is the space exploration center, the big old white dome. later this morning this is where 600 people are expected to show up to watch the final launch of the space shuttle. right now it is still a go as laura mentioned, even though the forecast calls for only 30% favorable conditions, nasa officials say they launched under worse circumstances, believe it or not. yesterday lightning struck 500 feet from the launch pad. nothing was damaged. "atlantis" is scheduled to make

its final ascent to the space station a 12-day mission with a four-person crew at 8:26 pacific time. one of the crew members is a uc-berkeley grad and san carlos native. he is a mission specialist. he is calling today's big event very bittersweet. the center here at moffett field will open, they are going to watch the launch courtesy of nasa's live feed. the launch is expected at 8:26, so about three hours from now. if you are at home and you would like to see it for yourself, nasa will stream it live online. log on to nasa.gov/ntv. for the latest conditions in florida, we have nbc's jay gray, he is standing by live for us right now at cape canaveral.

how's it looking? >> good morning, marla. it's looking cloudy right now, unfortunately, as the sun came up we saw the clouds building. the launch still going through their final preparations here and the crew of "atlantis" actually making its way through the white room and beginning to board "atlantis" at this point so. they are trying to get ready, hoping for a break in the clouds. you talked about people gathering to watch it there. we have close to a million along the space coast. they have gathered all along this peninsula and hoping that they get to see "atlantis" go. if it doesn't go, because of those clouds, if they scrub it late, it will likely mean a 48-hour hold. the reason being the teams can't get through all of the congestion, the crowds and get the rest they need to get back for a saturday window. what they would likely do, what the plan seems to be is come back on sunday morning. at that point the weather looks to be about 50/50.

and then they are also pushing to try and perhaps get a window open on monday that they could go ahead and try and launch then. the forecast gets better as we go into the week next week. that's the latest here at kennedy space center and marla, i can tell you i hope the 600 gathering there may be have secondary viewing choices in case we don't get a launch. >> i'm sure they will find something to do. thank you very much, jay. exciting morning. >> governor jerry brown is expected to meet the royal couple at the airport when they land in los angeles today. the duke and duchess are due to be whisked away to the hilton hotel where they will attend a business event. later the couple expected to meet up with the governor and california's first lady at a welcome reception at the british consulate's residence. tomorrow polo and a party.

15 minutes after getting knocked down in may the job market likely picked itself up as companies increased hiring. forecasts looking for 125,000 new jobs last month, unemployment is seen holding steady at 9.1%. wall street closed higher yesterday following a stronger than expected report on private sector hiring. to recap some of that market action the dow 12,719 is where we closed. the nasdaq added 38 to 2872. your kids may have just gotten out of school but a lot of retailers are thinking about the bell ringing in september because some are jumping the gun to get attention, extra early. last year customers spent on back to school items. a promotion on back packs and lunch boxes last week they started this one. staples kicked off its sales on wednesday, and office depot and target going to follow on

sometimes thousands of low income kids. registration to get supplies starts at 9:00 this morning. it runs until 3:00 this afternoon. look at all of the smiles. it's great getting new crayons. and they had to turn away a lot last year but the organization increasing their goal, they hope to give 2,000 children back packs and other supplies. all that of course depends on donations. they are asking for your help that donations be sent before august 5. it will go hand in hand. if you see the supplies at the stores early, maybe you can throw in a couple for kids. 5:18 now. i want to check the forecast with rob. he brought with him cooler temperatures. >> yeah, free ocean air conditioning i think it's going to kick in. even for morgan hill. maybe not today but by the time we get into the weekend we'll see the cooler changes inland. pretty thick fog along the coast. you'll run into that around the golden gate bridge. the sea breeze not too strong but the evening commute, i think that's when you see the sea

breeze pick up. it's finally meaning that we're seeing better air quality as well. still the tri-valley, inland, east bay valleys we still have moderate air quality. but as the sea breeze picks up we'll see air quality looking pretty good into the weekend. if you are lucky enough to catch the giants game we've got the mets in town. it will be jacket weather as the sea breeze turns stronger through the game. we'll see cool conditions around san francisco, straight on through the weekend ahead. the satellite view, we'll show you we've got this trough that has set up. it's leadsing to cooling. but if you make travel plans into western mexico or cabo san lucas, calvin is strengthening but moving away so good news other than big surf heading to mexico, not much expected of tropical storm calvin. for the bay area, these are typical summer micro climates. 90s for livermore and pleasanton, san jose probably 90s around morgan hill. notice the cooling around san francisco and the coast, looking

at low to mid-60s. 80s and 90s inland for the north bay valleys t the weekend will continue the cooldown. today likely the warmest day for some time. the temperatures drop off early next week. >> we notice the cooling. thank you very much. 5:20 now. a bridge that spanned pennsylvania river for more than 100 years was demolished today. crews used less than 200 pounds of explosives, look at that, to drop it into the river. amazing there. hundreds of people came out to watch the action. they got quite a show. look at that even from a distance as the bridge fell. crews are going to salvage steel from the old bridge. the new bridge opened in march and cost $23 million to construct. >> it's 5:20 right now. great news for bay area. the wine economy is rebounding. we'll have details coming up next. >> plus,illionsf o of apple ap downloaded. we'll look at some of them

>> all strapped in getting ready to go as the countdown we think will be on for "atlantis." it depends on the weather. they have an 8:00 launch time. keeping tabs on what is going on. 5:23. also keeping tabs on the weather. the rain may have put a damper on the wine industry this spring, but a new economic report shows sunny skies ahead. according to wine quarterly report, global wine prices including bay area markets, are continuing to gain footing as the economy slowly recovers. part of the reason why things are looking up is consumers are drinking about as much wine as they are making. that stabilizes the prices after falling two years in a row. they are starting to increase.

the strongest part of the industry is bulk wine which has been seeing increases in sales recently. >> i want to check the morning commute. rob mayeda pulling double duty. >> good morning, in for mike who promises typically on a friday morning you expect friday light. we're still seeing that right now for your bay area commute. there is a look at the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. everything on time right now. many of the bay area commutes okay. that's an interesting one there, the golden gate bridge, we have got thick fog, so on the maps is a little slowing, moving southbound from marin county across the bridge, a little slowing there. east bay travel times, 24 and 880 through oakland pretty good. 680 as well. the san rafael/richmond bridge, travel times good at speed this morning. highway 4 through pittsburg and antioch, westbound slowing but still mainly in the green there along highway 4 and across the

altamont pass, westbound as you pass livermore, you'll find a little bit of slowing as you approach the 580/680 interchange across the tri-valley commute. >> thank you, rob. new things this morning, your ipad and iphone may be vulnerable to hackers. scott mcgrew joins us. hackers usually target -- don't usually target ipads. >> the ipad, laura, it's all growed up. bad guys considering the ipad and the iphone worthy of targeting. it's unlikely you'll run into problems yourself. apple is working on a fix. they should roll it out any time. ipad user were the victim of a hack attack early on. in the first days of the ipad being on the market, but that was really an attack against at&t and its system, not apple. we're going to score this as being the first hack. apple says fans have downloaded 15 billion apps. let me say that. 15 billion, like birds. if this alone does not give

their feeder here. joining me this morning is nasa ames chief historian, mr. jack boyd. thank you for your time this morning. everybody is talking about the weather. you're in touch with nasa and folks in florida. what's the latest? >> good morning. welcome to ames. it looks like the weather is improving slightly, so we won't know for a while yet but we've got our fingers crossed. >> still about 30%? >> 30%, 35%. >> hey, our fingers are crossed. again, the weather is a big topic. i think people are overlooking what's the purpose of the 12-day mission. what's going to happen? >> this 12-day mission with four astronauts is primarily to bring equipment and food up to supply the space station for the next several months, and also they are going to test a robotic refueling situation to see if we can refuel any spacecraft robotically. >> it's really the end ever an era. >> we've ended several other eras and gone on to great are

walhe walheim, he has had fruit and he asked for a turkey sandwich with provalone cheese on sour dough, please. >> well, i guess they get what they want. interesting. >> i would hope so. yes. >> sounds good. thank you very much, marla. >> new this morning, police are searching for a man who molested a 13-year-old boy near the santa cruz beach boardwalk last night. it happened outside a public restroom after 8:00 p.m. the boy was not injured. the suspect is pretty generic described as a white man between 25 and 45 years old. 5'9" to 6 fot tall with short brown hair. wearing a white tank top. it sounds like -- let's see, a black tee swhirt a swirl pattern on. >> u.s. coast guard plane will resume its search for people

missing from a sunken fishing boat. the plane will search an area off the coast of mexico. seven people are still missing after the tourist boat sank early sunday. the coast guard hopes that some people may have survived in the warm water and calm sea. relatives of the missing hope they will put together a dive team to look for the boat. they are disappointed it hasn't happened yet. >> we want to believe that no one wasn't able to get out but in the event that someone wasn't able to get out for some of them, which ever families, that would affect, it would bring closure to a lot of us. >> the coast guard says it searched 1400 square miles of ocean and land since the mexican navy asked for help. some of the fishermen who survived the sinking are telling horrifying stories. four fishermen arrived last night to open arms of their family. they are relieved to be safe but heartbroken that not everyone is accounted for.

each man says it was chaos in the water and their will to survive is really what got them through it. >> i was in the water 20 hours. and we had numerous fishing boats pass usment >> another man didn't have a life jacket. i don't remember his last name. his first name is bob. and he grabbed onto the ice chest. we had two. i happened to notice that it was my ice chest and inside my ice chest was another personal flotation device. >> you may have noticed there the man horribly sun burned. they are also mentally exhausted. they are very angry at the captain of the erik who they believe is at fault. they say when the boat was sinking all crew members had life jackets while the fibber men scrambled. put down that nintendo, leave the x box and don't be distracted by that wii. bob has taken a time machine

back to the 80s for a look at the forefathers of modern video games. he joins us live from the convention center to get your flock of sea gulls hair going too? >> good morning, laura. boy, does this bring back memories. the last time i played this game in an arcade i was probably 11 or 12, it was the early 80s. i'm talking about spy hunter. this is one of a couple hundred video games that you can come and play this weekend at the california extreme arcade show here at the santa clara convention center. it's the 15th annual show. they have spy hunter, a classic, i'm going to end there. robo tron, i remember that. asteroids deluxe, jungle king, we've got mark. i'm curious, you think about all of the gaming systems out there, is it hard to draw the young kids in or you find young kids who maybe they grow up on this, still come out here. >> i think the parents bring them more than anything. when they come they enjoy it a

stampede there this morning before heading to the united states. they were in canada for nine day, turned out to be a successful trip. they seem to be well loved everywhere they went. one of the things that they are focusing on during this trip, not only meeting dignitaries and shaking hands but also charities, prince william supports a number of charities, they are visiting some of those in canada, they are visiting some here in los angeles in fact, tomorrow laura, they are going to a job fair for a military veterans and they are also going to visit an inner city arts program for children. that should make for really fun pictures to see them there. >> i hope they got unlimited miles on their hertz rent a car because they are busy. >> reporter: very much so. >> or their carriage, programs. thank you. it's exciting they are coming. 5:44. someone is stealing copper wire from power poles in antioch. it happened yesterday morning, even before the sun came up.

antioch police say copper wire thieves clipped high tension power lines on shadow lane near highway 4. someone called police. they found cut power lines and others on the ground. the lines were under extreme tension when they were cut. they fell with enough force to damage some parked cars. a book written by jaycee dugard is expected to be released next week. memoirs of her abduction held in captivity and her being discovered after 18 years will all be in the book. she was just 11 years old when phillip and nancy garrido kidnapped her and held her captive in the back yard of their home in antioch. the book, "a stolen life" will be available tuesday and audio book read by jaycee dugard will also be available on tuesday. >> faa south of san jose this morning looking into a deadly small plane crash. phil gomez is live at the site

in watsonville with more on what happened. good morning, phil. >> reporter: good morning. the plane was coming out of watsonville airport, it was taking off when, for whatever reason, it veered right toward the watsonville hospital. it didn't crash into the hospital but into an office near the hospital. there were two people who were killed in the plane crash. it's a four-person single engine plane. behind me you can see the tape surrounding the hospital, the hospital is all blocked off by the yellow tape because there is debris from the plane that's in the parking lot because before the plane crashed it clipped a tree, hit the pavement 50 feet in front of the office building, then bounced into the coastal women's health center. fortunately, there was no one inside that building or it could have been a lot worse. the ntsb and faa have been on scene. the number of the plane is registered to a david houghton.

see a stronger sea breeze and cooler temperatures to take us into the weekend. right now 40s and 50s across the north bay. near 60 in san jose. kind ever a weak sea breeze but enough to scoop in low clouds. we'll see a stronger sea breeze especially later on this evening. good news for air quality, moderate, this should turn green as that sea breeze picks up. if you are lucky enough to head to the giants game. the mets in town. it's back to jacket weather at the ballpark. bundle up. we'll turn cool and breezy through the game. the weather across california, we've been watching the moisture, we've seen thundershowers the last few days. most of that moisture i think is going to head east of lake tahoe as this trough settles into the pacific northwest. this is the reason why the see breeze is going to turn stronger and eventually the cooling is going to push inland come saturday and sunday. today still toasty inland but we'll see cooler temperatures
