time. look at the lunch time temperatures if you are watching from pleasanton and fairfield, it's going to get toasty by noon. it's the inland tri-valley and morgan hill and south of san jose that will see the hot weather. a cooldown which is taking place around san francisco and the coast is really going to drop our temperatures toward the weekend. of course your full seven-day forecast is coming up in a couple of minutes. one thing the weather may do to the commute if you travel across the golden gate bridge you could see fog related slowing. you can see right across the mid span. i got to say travel times as we show you from the golden gate to the east bay fine. even 880 behaving this friday light morning so far. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:01 now. in about about 2 1/2 hours space shuttle "atlantis" is expected to lift off from kennedy space center ending an era for nasa. we've got a live look at the launch pad this morning. if the weather holds, today's launch will be nasa's final space shuttle mission. marla tellez is monitoring the situation in florida from here

in the bay area. lots of people want to watch what's going on. she joins us live from nasa ames research center with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're inside the nasa ames exploration center at moffett field giving you a look inside, i sound hollow now because we're inside a training module. this is a scientific laboratory that folks can check out if they visit the center here. and then across the way allen is going to give you a look at the theater where about 600 people are expected to be this morning to watch the final launch of space shuttle "atlantis." right now it is still a go. the latest word is the weather is improving, so good news there. the forecast still calls for only 30% favorable conditions. just yesterday lightning struck about 500 feet from the launch pad. fortunately, nothing was damaged. "atlantis" is scheduled to make

its final ascent to the space station with a four-person crew at 8:26 a.m. pacific time. one of the crew members is a uc-berkeley grad and san carlos area native. rex walheim is a mission specialist. he says today is bittersweet. >> the vast majority of people who have been to space have been on board the space shuttle. >> the exploration center here will open at 7:00 this morning, that's when folks are expected to arrive, about 600 are expected, again. the launch courtesy of nasa's live feed. we'll bring that to you live. the people here tell me they remind me this morning that you know what, it may come down to the very last second. they had launches scrubbed at the last second. we'll have to wait and see. >> exactly. we're waiting, watching as you

mentioned. 8:26 is the launch time. live right here on nbc bay area. 6:03 now. the faa and ntsb are on the scene of a small plane crash in watsonville. the plane crashed into a building adjacent to a hospital. we've got new video of investigators continuing to examine the crash site. the the plane is almost unrecognizable. it had just taken off from watsonville airport when it nose dived. it crashed in the parking lot and skidded into the building, then burst into flames. the watsonville community hospital is just across the street from the runway. one experienced pilot says the pilot may have been trying to avoid low cloud cover, climbing too quickly it can reduce the amount of lift over the wing. >> it appears in this case he

took off, climbed to the ceiling, then he couldn't see so got scared, dropped back down, and tried to do a left bank and come back around to land. then at some point buried it. >> luckily no one on the ground was hurt. it's been six weeks since nursing student michelle le disappeared. she was last seen may 26 at kaiser hospital in hayward where she was taking a nursing class. today a fund-raiser will help the ongoing effort but on by her family and friends and volunteers. elyce kirchner joins us to tell us more about the fund-raiser which starts this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's unfortunately more than a month since michelle went missing but her family is holding out hope she will be found alive. they are holding a fund-raiser here at the sizzler. later this morning you can see they have put up flyers talking about when she went missing,

details about her with any information people may see to find her and we've also had some of her family arrive here action her brother michael now joins us live. tell bus this. >> we're here to spread awareness, she still needs our help to be found. we're here to raise funds. 20% of the proceeds here will go to 100% of it will go to the search effort to find her. things like just making more flyers, making tee shirts, buying gear for the search party and possibly raising the award money. >> reporter: she has been missing since the end of may. since her disappearance, hayward police has ruled her disappearance a homicide. have you had contact with authorities? >> we have constant contact with the authorities but they can't release much because they are building you know, they have a homicide case on their hands. so we understand that.

we're focused on just getting the word out and making sure people remember, know who michelle is and back the search parties. >> you have organized several search parties in the past. still no trace of her. has anything been recovered from any of those searches that may help police? >> no. as of now we don't think anything found throughout would be tied to michelle. >> how difficult is this for your family? >> you know, every are i day it gets harder. you don't feel her presence, you feel like there is a hole or emptiness in your life that needs to be filled until she's back. so, we just work around the clock just thinking of ways to bring her back with the fund-raisers and search parties and flyers and thing like that. >> reporter: what does it mean to you to have people come to this event?

>> it means so much. the community still knows about michelle, really wants michelle back as much as we do because it's not just a hole in our lifrns, it's an emptiness in the community. until she's home. >> reporter: thank you so much, michael. the event starts at 11:00 this morning and goes to 10:00 this evening at the sizzler here in hayward. show up and say that you heard about this event through nbc bay area. for now we're live in hayward. elyce kirchner, today in the bay. >> can't imagine the heartache. thank you very much. it's 6:08. a man is dead after a tragic accident at the a's rangers game in texas. after a foul ball went back into the field, the rangers outfielder josh hamilton threw the ball into the crowd. a man caught the ball eventually but as he reached over he flipped over the railing and fell about with 20 feet behind the outfield wall. the man died on the way to the hospital. his young son was with him.

we're actually not showing you the fall. after the man fell, he could actually still talk and told police about his son. and asked them to check on him. the newspaper reports in texas that the victim was a firefighter in brown wood a city near arlington. the rangers president says that hamilton, the player that threw the ball, is understandably very distraught. >> california is gearing up for what could be the largest peace officer layoff in state history. the state department of justice currently has 484 sworn officers. but the new state budget eliminates at least 200 officers from the department of justice. these are the undercover officer who is take down meth labs and raid pot farms. community members are upset while agents say the move sends a dangerous message to drug cartels. >> perplexed on why the state would want to do that when they know there is a big issue with drug trafficking from mexico.

>> they don't have to be on the look out. no one's coming. we won't be there and local law enforcement is stretched real thin. >> for now, each agency is trying to scrape together funding from other sources to keep operating. >> it's 6:09. i want to get a look at the forecast for today. rob is filling in for christina. >> good morning. pretty nice start. we only have to worry about patchy thick fog around san francisco, golden gate, 50s across the board. we'll see one more day of summer heat inland but things cool down through the weekend. the sea breeze is backed off. we're not seeing a strong punch into fairfield so just patchy low clouds across the bay. as the sea breeze picks up, for outdoor plans, the air quality is going to improve. today moderate out toward the east bay inland valleys. florida weather looking unexpectedly good. you can see most of the thunderstorm clusters are to the west of cape canaveral but a lot

of moisture out of the south so we're looking probably at a flight time decision to see if this shuttle "atlantis" will launch after 8:20 here on the west coast. mainly clear skies above the low clouds we have around the bay area. you can see hour by hour, if your forecast as we head to noon, inland temperatures going to soar, then drop off as we head into the afternoon and the evening. through the rest of the weekend you can see these temperatures not hitting the 80s and 90s. look at the inland 90s. as we get into sunday, inland probably only seeing highs we're talking mainly 70s inland early next week. we're looking at 84 san jose, 64 san francisco, low 90s inland for livermore up to fairfield. across the north bay, ukiah or lake port, still 90s. as the marine layer deepens up you'll see the temperatures cooling down. even inland, it's going to be kind of chilly on the coast with morning drizzle. highs staying cooler than average as we head through the

>> good morning to you. taking a look at -- this is in florida this morning. no doubt an official -- there we go. we're waiting for the "atlantis" shut tool take off this morning so we kind of get a vast array of different shots from them. we never know what we're going to get. looks like they are on standby. they should be showing off their hollywood patches. they should be taking off after 8:20 this morning if the weather cooperates. 6:15 now. police finally nab the man accused of stealing a picasso drawing from the san francisco gallery. 31-year-old mark lugo from hoboken, new jersey is the suspect. police arrested him in an apartment complex in napa. they say he had the drawing ready to be shipped. he flew into san francisco on the fourth of july.

he took the drawing from the gallery the next day. apparently lugo's friends say he was staying in napa. they had no clue what he was up to. 6:15. governor jerry brown is expected to meet the royal couple at the airport when they land in los angeles today. the duke and duchess are due to be whisked away to the beverly hilton hotel where they will attend a business event to support british trade. later tonight the couple expected to meet up with the governor and first lady at a welcome reception at the british consul general's resident. tomorrow polo and a party. on sunday the royal couple expected to tour inner city arts and stop by a job fair before looking. put down the nintendo, leave the exam box and don't be distracted by that wii. bob has taken a time machine back to the 80s for a look at the forefathers of modern video games.

he shows us where you can play the classics this weekend. >> good morning, laura. i'll tell you, boy, does this bring back memories. the last time i played this game in an arcade it was the early 80s. i'm talking about spy hunter. this is one of a couple hundred video games you can play this weekend at the california extreme arcade show at the santa clara convention center. it's the 15th annual such show. they have spy hunter, a classic. i'm going to end there. robotron, i remember that. asteroids deluxe, jungle king, we have mark. i'm curious, when you think of all of the gaming systems out there, is it hard to draw the young kids in or do you find young kids who maybe they grow up on this still coming out. >> i think the parents bring them more than anything. when they come they enjoy it a lot. the console games and everything, it's easy to sit at the computer and do your thing. >> the parents and people of our

rink. is that dating me or what. 6:18 now. i want to check with rob in for christina this morning. remember all of the oldies but goodies. >> yeah, still quite fun. tron was one of my favorites there that bob played. if you are going to be out around the bay area, if you're not playing video games, you want to enjoy the sunshine, we've got some of that in san francisco. quite a bit of fog. if you are lucky enough to have tickets to the giants game it's going to be a night you want a sweatshirt as the sea breeze will pick up. probably looking at low 60s dropping into the 50s. mets in town today all the way through sunday before the all-star break. across the west coast we have low clouds, in terms of isolated thunderstorms in the mountains, it does look like more of that moisture is heading to the east as a trough moves into the west coast. that should keep that moisture away from the bay area out to the east. we'll see a stronger case of ocean air conditioning probably by the end of the weekend. maybe not today for inland

valleys but for the coast you've got the fog. as the sea breeze turns stronger you'll see cooler temperatures. away from the bay area, western mexico, we've got a tropical system, this named calvin moving to the west at 50 miles per hour. winds will weaken and stay away from cabo san lucas. bay area temperatures looking like july. you've got 80s, you don't like that. the drive over to san francisco, you've got the fog. 75 in oakland. 90s around pleasanton, so toasty. same if you head up to lake port with 92. the seven-day forecast starts to cool things off. cooling off quite a bit. that's too much for some as the highs even inland we're talking mid 70s. back to you. >> i think it's just right. thank you. 6:20 now. still to come on today in the "bay area living" the future looks good for the california

a bit with rob mayeda. but we are checking in with rob right now because he's helping us out filling in for mike in the traffic department. >> good friday morning. pretty nice start to the morning commute so far. everything is still in the green though the weather is going to impact you, though, as you head across the golden gate bridge. the fog across the bay. right about 500 feet thick or so in spots. you can see the fog there with folks using their headlights across the golden gate bridge. travel times not impacted too much. typical slowing off the westbound part of the bay bridge heading into san francisco, some slowing there but nothing too unusual. san rafael and richmond bridge areas and also the benicia bridge on time. highway 4, a little slowing passing antioch and pittsburg. altamont pass seeing slowing. your commute down the sunol grade. east shore freeway friday light this morning. >> the rain in spring may have put a damper on the wine

industry. a new report shows sunny skies ahead. according to wine quarterly report, global wine prices are continuing to gain footing as the economy slowly recovers. part of the reason things are looking up, consumers are drinking about as much as they are making. that is stabilizing wine prices which after falling a couple of years are starting to increase. the strongest part of the industry is bulk wine which has steadily seen increases since last year. >> for the first time hackers are specifically targeting ipad and iphone. that's history in the making, scott. >> it really is. the ipad is all growed up because bad guys are considering the ipad and the iphone worthy of targeting. it's unlikely you run into problems, and apple is working on a fix. they should roll it out any time. ipad users were the victim of a hack attack. in its first days it was on the

market there was an attack. but that was against at&t's system, not apple. we'll score today as the first ever. apple says fans have downloaded 15 billion apps. 15 billion. if that does not give other tablet makers pause. apple says there are 200 million running ios. "the wall street journal" published a shocking series of reports showing how advertisers follow you from website to website. if you google dandruff, two weeks later you get ads for shampoo, that's not an accident. microsoft and mazyla are fighting back. we'll look at it after "meet the press" on sunday. unemployment rate just jumped to 9.2%. we got the june jobless rate.

it was a little late because of the july 4th holiday. adding 18,000 jobs. 18,000 isn't near enough to cover even the number of 18-year-olds coming into the work force so it's a net loss. it is bad news. and more evidence that the economy continues to go in fits and starts. this is not good news. >> it will be interesting to break it down to see how we're doing in our area. >> california has a spret release. that will come in about a week. the search continues for six men missing off the coast of mexico as survivors make their way home. we'll have a live report up next. we're also live with the family mi missing nursing student chelle le, not giving up hope. that's next. do something for it. show it some love. chevron with techron. care for your car.

fairfield and concord and livermore climbing into the 80s by noon. high temperatures inland. we're going to hit 90s around pleasanton and fairfield. look at san francisco and the coast. a stronger sea breeze is going to take the edge off of the heat. we'll have that seven-day forecast in a few moments. checking your friday morning commute, still at this point it is friday light. 880 there looking good, no delays. wide angle bu on the map, we'll show you that even around the golden gate bridge and downtown. off the bay bridge, travel times looking good, looks like highway 24 and highway 4 off to the east around concord behaving nicely. >> let's hope that continues. thank you. 6:31. nursing student michelle le disappeared six weeks ago, last seen may 27 at kaiser hospital in hayward where she was taking an evening nursing class. today a fund-raiser will help the effort by family, friends and volunteers who continue to search for her.

elyse joins us live to tell us more about the fund-raiser which starts in a couple of hours. good morning, elyse. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. it starts around 11:00 a.m. you can see the flyers and tee shirts on the wall here. the family tells me they chose this location to hold the fund-raiser because this was the last place that michelle and her tamly dined together before she went missing on may 27. i want to bring in now her younger brother michael to tell us more about this. you approached many of the restaurants, they said no, they didn't want to host this. >> yeah. i didn't make the calls but sizzler and joseph torres, the manager here, has been great. he's the most eager that we called to help us with fundraising, they even want to give us the staging area for a car wash on the 29th and they want to provide for all of the

materials for the car wash. they have been awesome. >> tell me about the event today. folks come in and mention michelle and what happens? >> right. they just come in with a flyer or mention that they saw it on nbc news, and then 20% of their meal will go to the search fund. >> reporter: you held several searches. tell me about those and if anything came of those. i know there were several items recovered during those searches. >> yeah. we had two search parties and several things were flag forward the police to check out. we believe nothing would lead to michelle. >> reporter: chai did you choose the niles canyon area? >> because we talked to the police and they gave us that area and a few other areas to look in. >> reporter: thank you so much. i cannot imagine what your family has gone through.

thank you. again, this event starts at 11:00 this morning, goes to 10:00 this evening. all you do is show up, mention nbc bay area and part of your meal will go toward the search effort for michelle. >> michelle le. >> mention michelle. yes. say you saw this on nbc bay area, and again, 20% goes to the search efforts. >> thank you very much. hope that family finds peace soon. survivors of a boat that sank off the coast of mexico coming home today. bob redell is live in san jose to tell us more. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. as expected that sometime this morning leeic a gamy and michael ving two survivors of that capsizing of the fishing boat on sunday in the gulf of california and maine maine should be arriving. i got off the phone with the

wife of lee ig a ammy. they are traveling with the clothes on their back because of the accident. but saying that he is very exhausted, can't wait to come home after what she described as a horrible experience. lee was thrown from the boat among with other fellow fishermen friends. they ended up spending at least 12 hours in the gulf of california before they were rescued. he was supposed to have been back home here in the bay area. but to just make matters worse they were driving leslie ye's truck back up from mexico. you might recall leslie ye, he was the one fisherman confirmed dead, a friend of theirs, they are driving it back. they got across the border, and somewhere between there and san diego that truck broke down. so they were able to get transportation, not able to take a plane. they ended up taking a greyhound

bus, expected back in the bay area sometime this morning. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. >> a nightmare of a trip continues for them. thank you, bob. 6:35 now. it is also t-minus two hours at cape canaveral where shuttle "atlantis" is gearing up for its last shuttle mission. we have a live look at kennedy space center in florida. they are geared up. today in the bay's marla tellez keeping tabs on the launch from nasa ames research center. she joins us now. >> reporter: you can't see me just yet, we're starting with a look at the theater that is set up inside the nasa ames exploration center. people are going to watch the live feed of the final launch. the 135th final flight of the space shuttle. joining me live we have the chief historian, jack boyd. he has been part of this

community for some 64 years. so you know nasa quite well. you are in touch with everybody in florida. the weather condition, that's what everybody is looking at this morning, what is the latest? >> the latest we heard is as everyone else has is about 30% chance still the astronauts are in their seats. we're hoping for the best. >> what does this mean for the future of space exploration? >> it's the end of this era. we had the end of several eras, mercury, gemini, apollo. the space station will go at least 2020. we are focused on doing the research for the next missions. we have responsibility for several activities going out to explore mars as well as asteroids. we've got an exciting future ahead. >> it's a four member crew going up today. a 12-day mission. explain to folks what's going to happen. >> mainly the purpose of this

mission is for the four members to take up food, supplies, hardware that will be needed for the next several years. we'll do other space activities. we hope soon now the commercial people will step forward and permit us to go to the space station while nasa focuses on missions beyond orbit. >> jack boyd, thank you for your time. the doors here open in about 25 minutes at 7:00, 600 people have actually preregistered to watch the live feed that nasa is going to provide. they have reached a maximum capacity so it's a popular place to be this morning. i want to leave you with this. it's breakfast time. people enjoying breakfast. the astronauts they enjoyed theirs. nasa sent out a press release that included the menu, some had eggs, the pilot had steak and eggs. the local astronaut with ties to

the bay area, rex walheim asked for a turkey sandwich. >> it wasn't freeze dried? >> i'm sorry? >> it wasn't freeze dried. >> right. no. i think it was the real deal. >> there you go. they deserve that. thank you. 6:39 now. i want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda filling in for christina, bringing cooler temperatures. cape canaveral we're concerned about the forecast. >> it has been changing minute by minute we're watching the heavier showers. in the last 30 minutes we're seeing a few of these pop up. the launch time just under two hours. this is to be expected with the computer models. increasing showers to the west, so still the count down clock is running but the weather starting

to get worse from the west. hopefully this should hold off. the west coast includes a cooling trend as we get that trough moving to our north. that's going to pump up the sea breeze. eventual hi that's going to punch inland for the weekend so will need to cooling. by this evening you'll see that stronger sea breeze kick in and temperatures starting to cool down. around the bay area, it looks like your typical summer micro climate. in the south bay, hos gats, further north, away from the bay it feels like summer. north of santa rosa. 90s, mid 80s in pentaluma. heading out to sacramento talking 90s. for the weekend today the hottest day for a while as the sea breeze takes hold. inland spots only in the 70s. now, speaking of comfortable it has been a quiet morning commute on this friday so far as we show

>> welcome back everyone. live look outside. we're looking at san francisco this morning. looks like it's clearing up. a little warm inland but cooling temperatures will prevail. 6:46 now. this morning the faa and ntsb are on the scene of a small plane crash in watsonville. the plane crashed into a building adjacent to the hospit hospital. we've got new video of investigators examining the crash site. the plane almost unrecognizable. it had just taken off from watsonville municipal airport when it nose dived crashing in the parking lot and skidding into the building, then bursting

into flames killing the two people on board. no one on the ground was hurt. >> a new book by jaycee dugard is expected to be released next week. memoirs of her abduction, held in captivity, years of sexual and mental abuse and her being discovered after 18 years will all be in the book. she was just 11 years old when phillip and nancy garrido kidnapped her and held her captive in their home. the book called "a stolen life" will be available tuesday in book stores. an audio book read by jaycee herself will also be available on tuesday. members of oakland's police officer's union voted to approve concessions to avoid layoffs. under the agreement officers take home 9 to $15,000 less every year over the next four years, also delaying a cost of living increase, giving up to two holidays and reducing the pay of new officers as well as

maybe an hour or so. as the sea breeze picks up along the coast, then the rest of the bay area will start to cool down. good news for air quality. that's starting to improve. temperatures drop, we should see air quality looking fine for the weekend. the mets in town, you'll want your giants sweatshirt as we see probably patchy low clouds across the bay as we go through the game. west coast view shows you some of the moisture firing up thundershowers off to our east that should stay further to the east now as the winds aloft start to push in a stronger sea breeze. it should keep most of those thunderstorms away from lake tahoe. so still some low 90s inland and the warmest places but the trend through the weekend will be cooler temperatures even for our inland values. still toasty around los gatos, highs close to 90.

fleet as a way to cut costs. so far the state has tagged only 32% of those cars. the governor says he's finding it lift to stop state workers from taking home the vehicles they have. brown wants to safe california about $11 million in annual vehicle maintenance. auctioning surplus cars could generate another $5 million. 6:54 now. survivors of the boat that sank off coast of mexico are trying to come home today. they are having a tough time. bob is live to tell us more. good morning. >> reporter: yes, it's a road trip from you know what for michael ing of belmont and lee of san martin. they are two survivors of this horrible boating accident sunday morning in the gulf in mexico when their boat capsized. the search continues for seven people.

some of the friends of the two men. they were actually headed north, they crossed the border with u.s. and mexico driving leslie ye's truck, the one confirmed death in this accident. they got across the border. as they were approaching san diego the truck broke down. they didn't have any mean but decided it would be quicker to hop on a greyhound bus. they are expected to arrive at the greyhound station, expected sometime this morning after what has been a very long trip from mexico and of course i spoke with one of the wives of the survivors who described what they have been through. it's a horrible experience. the search and res kye efforts continue there for the seven people still missing. expected back here in the bay area sometime today. reporting looifrp live in san
