central livermore and clearing, then getting heavier toward hop yard. we'll send it back to you. live shots in the next report. >> thank you. we have the developing story this morning in pittsburg where police investigate another shooting on the popular de anza trail. christie smith joins us live with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. exactly yet another shooting. i spoke briefly with a neighbor who didn't want to go on camera. she said she's kind of scared after this whole series of shootings but said lately it has sounded like fireworks going off near this trail, so she has basically stayed off of it until her -- and told her grand kids to do the sap. this latest shooting happened before midnight on the delta de anza trail near railroad. the trail is closed after 10:00 p.m. so no one should have been on. neighbors heard gun fire and found a man down on the ground.

that's what police found when they came out. i spoke with the east bay parks. they are not releasing information on the man's condition or whether this is connected to another shooting a block away, also on the trail. that one wednesday night a. 20-year-old man was shot in the head. now reporting that man has died. police saying he had been shot at in antioch the week before and they do not believe that it was random. also, in early may another man was shot in the shoulder in an apparent gang-related attack, same trail, one dispatcher told me that police are increasing their patrols in the area and in light of what's going on. east bay regional parks working on a press update. as soon as i get that information i'll bring it to you. so far, though, no arrests in this latest shooting and no suspect information. reporting live in pittsburg, christie smith. >> thank you very much. two men are in custody after a

long car chase stretching from san pablo to fremont early this morning. p suspects in the car, carjacked a driver in san pablo, then fled. chp and other law enforcement agencies gave chase on southbound 880. the suspects drove to south fremont boulevard where they eventually crashed at an on ramp. police arrested two men in the car. a female in the car taken to the hospital. police are looking into a shooting and attempted robbery. one person went to the hospital. that shooting happened around 10:15 last night on chestnut street. two armed suspects tried to rob two people. the suspects ran away after the shooting and still on the loose. the victim is expected to survive. >> arson investigators are at a daly city elementary school. they think someone may have set a one-alarm fire at skyline elementary school. firefighters say the fire

started outside of the back area of the school, then spread into a nearby reading lab. investigators have not yet ruled it an arson, they are trying to find the source of that blaze. >> it's going to be a little crowded for commuters trying to get home at one san francisco b.a.r.t. station today as protesters will rally at the civic center station over an officer-involved shooting. bob redell is live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the organizers of these protests made it clear it is their intention to disrupt your ride home if you are using the civic center b.a.r.t. station 4:30 to 7:00. they are trying to bring attention to their cause, they are protesting is the b.a.r.t. police shooting and killing of charles hill, he was a 45-year-old transient who died a week ago last night this was on sunday the 3rd. i was at this station after a confrontation with two b.a.r.t.

police officers. the officers were responding to a call that hill was drinking alcohol on the platform and at risk of falling on the tracks. the officers say he was aggressive, had a knife, and slightly injured one of them when he threw a vodka bottle at them. they ended up shooting hill three times. at a news conference b.a.r.t.'s chief of police said he was comfortable with how his officers handled the situation. protesters think the shooting was unnecessary and b.a.r.t. police are participating in a cover-up. today they will demand the firing of the two officers who are on paid leave, the release of surveillance footage of the shooting and an independent investigation. it should be noted that both b.a.r.t. and san francisco police are investigating this shooting in parallel so. two separate investigations going on. this is the second b.a.r.t.

police shooting that caused controversy on new year's day oscar grant was shot and killed by then b.a.r.t. officer johannes beas mehserle. he said he meant to shoot grant with his taser, not his handgun. this is what b.a.r.t. had to say to us this morning. in response to the planned protests, i'm quoting, while this news outlet must think it's acceptable to promote unsafe and illegal behavior -- we find it reprehensible this outlet would ask us to participate in any story that could encourage illegal behavior and risk safety and security of b.a.r.t. passenger, employees and other guests. this is for your information, there is a chance that this planned protest could affect your commute this evening between 4:30 and 7:00 if you travel through the civic center

b.a.r.t. station. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> good for people to know to be prepared. thank you very much. it is 6:06 now. san francisco police officers have agreed to a contract with the city that will prevent layoffs and save money. police officers will immediately get a 3% pay increase with another small increase next april. officers will also pay an extra 3% into their pensions. firefighters in the city are expected to vote on a similar contract soon. if it is approved san francisco could save up to $31 million over the next two years. as you get in your car this morning caltrans officials want you to watch out for construction workers. the agency is starting a campaign along with the california highway patrol to remind drivers to move over. it's the law. caltrans officials say drivers should move over a lane if

possible when they see flashing lights. the campaign comes in response to a string of caltrans worker deaths this summer due to drivers not taking precautions. uc and csu students brace for more possible hikes. the board of regents will vote to increase tuition 10% for the semester next month. that is on top of the 8% increase approved last november. both systems were each whit a $650 million cut in the budget and both are asking students to make up the difference. >> it's really painful. we're paying a lot of money and this extra tuition increase is really going to affect my family. i already don't get a lot of financial aid from the college, so this is just even more is going to have to come out of my pocket. >> a few administrators vote on a 12% hike for undergraduates tomorrow. that's on top of a 10% increase

approved last fall. here is one great thing that is free this morning, the temperatures, the weather. all thanks to christine lorn. >> as we head through the next couple of days they will continue to fall. temperature thes that we see in the fall up to 70 degrees. that's it. 70 flat in the warmest cities on wednesday. the the reason why is this area of low pressure that sits to our north. it's driving in the on shore flow, pushing this ridge of high pressure that kept us warm and mug muggy, pushing it to the east. this will be the guy that's in control of our weather pattern. as a result we're going to see great starts, fog that is so thing it general are rates drizzle. watch for that. not too bad. it's a matter of time before we get that marine push. i think it will make its way to livermore this morning, just peeked my head out in san jose and yeah, it's a gray start even

in the sea of cortez on july 3rd. yesterday the coast guard searched by air, while the mexican navy searched by boat with the hopes of finding those men. the family members of those still missing want them home or to know their whereabouts. they launched a website. find our fathers.com shows the images of the missing men and lists the men who have already been rescued. >> richmond police still trying to figure out how it happened but say a triple homicide over the weekend is a result of a drug deal. police say three men were shot in an apartment on triangle court saturday afternoon around 4:30, in the next room a 6-year-old. police say the three men were involved in a close range gun fight. the child was not hurt but was a nephew of one of the victims. police say the investigation continues this morning but they are confident everyone involved is either dead or in custody.

>> controversial last minute decision by former governor schwarzenegger will have its first day in court this morning. the parents of a murder victim are suing arnold schwarzenegger because he did not warn them before he reduced the sentence of one of the men involved in their son's killing. esteban nunez pleaded guilty to being involved in the killing of a 22-year-old man in san diego. he was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but schwarzenegger reduced it to seven years. the victim's parents say schwarzenegger reduced nunez' sentence because he is the son of his political ally, you saw him there, former speaker nunez. schwarzenegger has generally admitted that is the case. 6:16 now. this morning animals at the san diego zoo are safe after a fire ripped through a gift shop near the panda exhibit. monica dean is live at the san diego zoo with the latest.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. that fire happened early this morning at the panda shop which is a gift shop in the heart of the zoo. and we just spoke with officials here at the san diego zoo, and they say that a security guard was doing a routine check before 2:00 this morning, he smelled smoke and called the fire department. take a look at some of the video from the scene. there was quite a bit of smoke as you can see. 25 firefighters were called to the scene, that's about four engines and two strucks. that shop was fully engulfed. the stricture is mostly wood, it burned very fast. the metal roof caved in. firefighters were able to knock down the flames in about 15 minutes. that panda shop is a 1200 square foot structure, about about 50 yards from the panda enclosure. that houses hundreds of birds. no people or animals were

injured. the cause of the fire is under investigation and crews are now still here at the san diego zoo combing through the burned debris, trying to figure out what may have caused this blaze. for zoo operations, if you have friends or relatives visiting, sounds like just the canyon cafe next to that panda shop may be impacted because of gas and water shut off to the area when the fire happened. looks like the build withing is a total loss. minimal impact to the san diego zoo, its operations and the animals are safe. we're live in san diego. monica dean. back to you. >> so everything open as normal? >> reporter: everything is running smoothly. it may be that one area, that canyon cafe you might want to go somewhere else to pick up lunch. all of the exhibits are open and the zoo is expected to run as narmle. >> i would imagine. thank you. certainly doesn't feel like summer in the bay area, at least

not today. did it last week. i want to check with christina loren. >> summer came in and then left. came in like a lion, left like a lamb. this is a live look at the transamerica pyramid. you can't see it because we're so socked in with fog. this fog isn't going to hang around long. showing you what's causing it, onshore flow has really kicked into high gear. as a result we've got fog all the way from the san francisco bay up through livermore. so, expect a mostly cloudy start. that will all make way to a lot of sunshine for the second half of the day. we're going to have to wait for it in the city, possibly until noon. high pressure has drifted to the east. that's good for us. that means all of the monsoonal moisture that brought the muggy weather into our neck of the woods will continue to drift off to the east. even southern california getting a break from the muggy conditions. on shore flow fully in control right now. you can see this system of low

pressure, a dip in the jet stream has brought about a cooling trend. that cool marine air will pull in. our lows overnight are actually quite a bit cooler than we've seen. 50 in gilroy. 52 in novato. we're starting out cool and cloudy, only at noon temperatures in the low 60s in some cities. 62 as you break for lunch in concord. you know what that means, drive around with the windows down, you don't have to worry about really hot air making the house really hot. might not need the ac if you are tough enough to take it. 79 degrees in san jose. downright perfect weather. these are numbers we see in the fall. this is going to continue to stay cool the next couple of days. 70 degrees by wednesday, the cools day of the week. then our temperatures jump back up to about 80 as high pressure regains control. we're only going to get to about 88 degrees over the weekend.

saved $400 million in labor and material cost. the department of transportation chose the maker because it has a huge crane needed to lift the pieces of the span. the new eastern span is scheduled to be open in 2013. >> taking the bike to work may not have all of the health advantages you think it does. at least according to a new study. canadian scientists say the health benefits of biking are directly related to how much traffic you ride through. fewer cars means less of a chance of getting hit and less chance of being exposed to pollution. short-term exposure to heavy traffic made a person's heart less able to respond to stress up to three hours after the ride. researchers say they are not suggesting that you stop liking to work but avoid busy roads when possible. >> i want to check in with scott mcgrew. >> good morning, laura. a woman is on trial in colorado accused of mortgage fraud,

prosecutors think there's valuable evidence on her laptop so the big question this morning is, her laptop's encrypted. should the courts force the accused to give up their passwords if doing so would prove them to be guilty? this seems like a violation of the fifth amendment. you can't be forced to testify against yourself. the counterargument is if you hide evidence in a safe you have to give up the key. the courts have said that. is the fact that the password is in your head, does that change things? it's a precedent we'll be looking at as it progresses. apple is suing a company called get jar which sells apps for smart phones in its app store. that's the fight. apple says only it can call its store an app store. get jar points out it's been selling apps longer and it's going to keep using the term. >> and finally, talk about an hd ipad that would be the next ipad that comes out. could be introduced as soon as

anza trail in pittsburg, police are investigating a second shooting there. christie smith is live in pittsburg. >> reporter: good morning. 6 1/2 hours after this shooting and police are still here gathering evidence. what they are going to do now is now that it's daylight, bring in metal detectors and look for shell casings and perhaps expand the search area. looking for evidence across railroad street. the victim may have staggered over this way and been shot over there. at midnight neighbors called 911. they heard gun fire on the trail and police found a man down near railroad and alvarado. the victim is out of surgery. this follows a shooting last wednesday, a 20-year-old pittsburg man that police say may have been shot at the week before. in that case it was not random. and now reporting that man has

died. neighbors say lately they heard rounds coming from the trail after hours. >> there are times at night it's before midnight or after midnight between the hours of 12 and 3, i hear gun shot, pop, pop, pop, but i think to myself it might be firecrackers. my grandson was with me and said mom, i mean grandma, that's gun shots. >> reporter: the trail is normally closed between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. this morning dog walkers are turned away as police gather evidence. expanding that search area. we do have calls tine pittsburg police about a possible connection with these shootings. east bay park police tell us that they are working on a press update. we'll bring to the you. they do tell me at this point there have been no arrests. live in pittsburg, christie

smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. an east bay county is using the power of the internet to help its legal system. contra costa county supervisors launched a website to help people who think they are not eligible to serve on jury duty. the site saves the time of having to travel or call the court. requests must be made at least five days before the start of jury duty and the court will review each inquiry and a decision will be delivered by post card. >> heading to the shores of lake tahoe may not be possible this summer because it's the unusually snowy winter has caused the lake to rise, shrinking the beaches. the most recent measurement has lake tahoe five feet above its natural rim. the level is still rising. it may not peak until the end of the month. more than 61 feet of snow fell in the sierra this season, second most on record. quite amazing. so beautiful up there as always.

i want to check in with christina loren. she's got a look at our forecast. >> good morning to you. yes, it's hard to make out what's behind me but this is transamerica pyramid. this is a live look overall across the bay area. we've got pretty dense patches of fog. you'll likely encounter overcast conditions at some point especially closer to the coast. because of our marine layer is so thick, up to 2,500 feet, i think we're going to deal with the first part of the day. take it to the futurecast. by noon 60 degrees, mild. just a few clouds hanging overhead. i think the sun will break through. mild, only 60 degrees as you break for lunch in the stixt then we round out the day, 65 degrees. so bring a coat with you because even in the city, in the heat of the day, 65 degrees and it's a little breezy out there now so there is a windchill factor. we don't want you to get cold.

>> the white house is working with automakers to come up with new gas mileage standards. kristen dahlgren is live in washington. >> good morning. how does this sound a. car that would get 56 miles for every gallon. that's the new fuel efficiency standard that the obama administration would like to see in place by 2025. that would be better for the environment, cost us less, mean less oil imports but the auto industry is saying not so fast. it's not quite so easy. while they are confident they will be able to develop that they say they have to put billions into it. they are also not sure that americans will want to drive or buy those smaller and lighter cars that are required for that type of fuel efficiency. and that they could be more expensive because of all of the
