>> new this morning an suv slams into a peninsula fire station. good morning. i'm marla tellez. coming up my live report. we're going to show you the damage behind me here coming up. >> commute chaos. the protest that brought b.a.r.t. to a grinding halt even though police knew it was coming. the latest on the system's big troubles. an autistic teen from the south bay found hundreds of miles from home. he boarded a bus bound for hollywood. a live look outside. it's tuesday, july 12th. this is "today in the bay."

>> good morning. i'm scott mcgrew. it's 4:30. let's get a tuesday forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott mcgrew. boy, does it feel like fall to you? because we've got temperatures today even cooler than where we ended up yesterday. i don't know if you made it to the city. it was cold in san francisco yesterday. we have a little improvement deeper into the week. we'll talk about that and what's to come for the weekend, but already this morning mike inouye is busy watching a serious situation in san francisco. what's going on? >> getting into san francisco, daly city there is a sigalert by chp. we don't usually have that because they usually don't have that much impact. this an overturned vehicle, an injury accident, this may be a deadly situation northbound 280 at the 19th avenue exit closing the entire exit potentially more because of the investigation that continues.

so for the time being use the junip junipero serra exit. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, two people in the hospital after their suv crashed into of all things a peninsula fire station. marla tellez live at the crash site in san mateo with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. yeah, the emergency services contractor van is still on scene. the guy, he is here, he just finished up boarding up the lower portion of the main apparatus store, this as far as we're told the main damage here at fire station 27. we're off of deanza boulevard in san mateo. i spoke to a firefighter and he tells me he was here when this happened last night. he says it's not something that happens every day and it was certainly a scary surprise toing inside and hear a slam. what happened was this was shortly before 11:00 last night

that a gmc yukon slammed into this fire station door. we also understand there is more damage but we're not being able to see that right now. we understand a fire reserve truck was also hurt or rather than hurt it was damaged. no firefighters were hurt in this accident. but the two people inside the suv, they were taken to the hospital with injuries. it's suspected the driver was drunk but that has not been confirmed yet. i hung up the phone with the battalion chief. he tells me because it's a fire station, the injuries were involved, as soon as the accident happened the firefighters as surprised as they were, they did their job and got the injured folks to a hospital. so, scott, it all worked out for them. again, the extent of the injuries not known. also, in terms of financial estimate, no word yet on the cost of the damage here.

>> a strange house call. marla tellez, thank you. 4:33. today, b.a.r.t. police review board will discuss the deadly officer-involved shooting during a meeting this morning that shooting prompted a large protest that shut down trains and snarled the evening commute. this is video yesterday evening crowding trains, blocking platforms at civic center b.a.r.t. station in san francisco. it was there on july 3 the two officers shot and killed charles hill after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife and threw a broken bottle. protesters say b.a.r.t. police were too quick to shoot. >> i don't feel safe with b.a.r.t. police around because they have proven time and time again as they respond to situations, that they are inadequate in bringing peace to a situation. >> san francisco police arrested just one person during the protests for public

intoxication. protesters are drawing similarities to the shooting of oscar grant in 2009 but police say the cases are markedly different. oscar grant was unarmed when he was shot. the situation escalated over the course of several minutes on a crowded platform at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. this incident was recorded on cell phone cameras. last sunday's shooting unfolded quickly. officers shot hill about a minute after arriving on the scene. there is surveillance video but it has not yet been made public. >> unwilling to give up the family of missing nursing student michelle l serks offering $100,000 reward in hopes that she will be found. they raised the money through fund-raisers and donations. michelle is missing 45 days. she disappeared during her break at kaiser. there are new searches for this weekend. the family is hopeful she will

be found alive. the police department classified the case as a homicide. >> a santa rosa couple is preparing for a funeral. takeimi rao died during a slumber party. police say her parents went to bed. in the morning two of the girls got up sick vomiting. the mother helped them believing it was food sickness. police believe the girls had been drinking vodka. the next morning the girls woke up and found their friend dead on the floor. >> she's like really happy, up beat people. always telling me to make the right choices. >> amazing little girl. you know. completely surprised and just really, really sad. >> if anything, it's the fact they are so naive and if she drank too much it's because she hadn't had experience with drinking. and overdid it.

>> police don't plan to file charges against the girl's parents because it appears they had no idea the girls were drinking. >> an autistic teen missing most of the day is headed home after he was found hundreds of miles away. los angeles police officers found 13-year-old jesus on a greyhound bus in the san fernando valley. garza who doctors say has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old bought a ticket and boarded the bus in san jose, apparently because he wanted to visit hollywood and neat stars of his favorite tv stores. officials are bringing him home as we speak. >> cutting class could cost students more money in concord. the city council will vote on a proposed daytime curfew to crack down on students skipping class. students could be fined as much as $500 if caught in a public place during regular school hours.

parents could face separate fines. police will make exceptions for students accompanied by parents, traveling to work or participating in a field trip. >> a san francisco judge is clearing the way for a controversial construction plan at hunter's point naval shipyard. a judge says the current environmental impact report for a proposed mega development is good enough. that means the city can now develop 700 acres of shoreline near candlestick. several environmental groups challenged the project over concerns that the cleanup at the shipyard could cause asbestos and other toxins to be released. pg&e says it should not have to pay out to the victims of the san bruno explosion because the blast was caused by third party work. the "san francisco chronicle" reports pg&e filed papers in court last week saying the company should not be held liable in lawsuits for millions in damages because private and

yesterday. we're looking at 63 in san francisco, 76 in los gatos and 72 in santa cruz. what's to come after we cool down tomorrow, we have major changes in the forecast. i'll get to those. got your seven day if you are thinking about the weekend. some of us doing a lot of work already. it's 4:40 a.m. >> an accident happened at about 3:30, thought they were going to reopen the off ramp getting into the city but the update came in, sounds like this is potentially a deadly accident, closing the off ramp. northbound 280 is open but you see slowing on the sensors already. your alternate is junipero serra. we don't have a time when they reopen. i'll bring you updates as they come in. we have also a wind advisory for the bay bridge so both directions between san francisco and oakland hold on as you cross the bridge.

the approach through the east bay is all right, again remind ter activity through daly city down the peninsula and here this is a 580 showing the slowing through the construction zone had a chosure between livermore and airway boulevard that reopened but slow. the difference between this scheduled construction and the sigalert a sigalert is unscheduled that's why i use different terms for those two situations. >> thank you. 4:41. talk of layoffs. we'll tell you how many jobs are rumored on the chopping block. the battle of the book worms.. .

>> this video just in to our newsroom. this is from earlier tonight when that suv crashed into a san mateo fire station. we were talking with marla tellez live about this. a drunk driving is suspected though that hasn't been confirmed. we're waiting on conditions of the two people in the suv. but again, some video from earlier tonight after firefighters were very much surprised by a bit of a house call. we'll check back in with marla coming up in the 5:00 news. >> it's been a tense summer for thousands of employees at one of the south bay's largest companies. we have known for sometime that cisco is cutting jobs but now we may know how many jobs will be lost. as many as 10,000 jobs could be cut by the end of august, that's

according to bloomberg, 14% of the company's total work force. cisco stock dropped 24% in the past year. the cuts are expected to save $1 billion in the 2012 fiscal year. it will make its intentions public on august 11 when it reports its earnings. >> four square figures out a way to make money. target sets its sights on an e-reader. nicole lapin, good morning. >> hey, good morning. there's a lot of red ink across the board. futures are sharply lower, investors worry about the debt issues. whether greece's problems will spread to italy and as president obama and congress continue to spar over their budget deficit. asian markets fell, europe is in the red right now, we get some data on the trade deficit and in minutes from last month's fed

meeting. the market action yesterday, it wasn't pretty. the dow falling 12,505 is where we closed, the nasdaq lost 57 to 2802. you're right, four square is getting into the daily deals business. the site is looking to boost revenues by marketing coupons. you can start receive the deals today. it lets checking in at bars and restaurants and venues via cell phone. target taking on amazon. the retailer will start selling a device to compete with the kindle and nook. it will cloost $139.99. there are estimates that more than 16 million e-readers will be sold this year so they hope there is space in the pie for them. >> thank you. amazon.com wants california

customers to strike down a law forcing the website to charge sales tax in the state. the company says it wants voters to go to the ballot in february to decide on an online sales tax law, that law forces company -- that operate in california to select sales tax. that adds up to $200 million a year for the state by estimate. there is such a law in place made by lawmakers but amazon has refused to collect the sales tax. that law took effect on july 1. let's check in with christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott mcgrew. we're looking pretty good this morning. it's a cool start, it's tuesday. three more days before we get to the weekend. but the great news is this weekend will be phenomenal for outdoor plans. we have this unusual weather today and tomorrow. high pressure has drifted to the east enabling all of this cool marine air to pull into the bay

area. it's going to be a nice day. on shore flow, temperature this is morning are chilly as a result in some spots. 53 in santa rosa, 54 novato. 53 in san francisco. it's also created uniform temperatures, our lows fluctuate between inland and coastal cities but this morning uniform numbers because that marine air has pushed inland. a mostly cloudy start from san francisco to livermore. 56 in san jose. you might need a jacket especially in the city. 63 degrees. only about a 10-degree spread in temperatures we have throughout this afternoon even in the heat of the day. 75 degrees the forecast high in redwood city. 74 degrees in fremont. the seven-day outlook is coming up so stay tuned. right now back to the man in charge, scott mcgrew. >> stanford university has gotten the final nod to begin a

huge expansion. the council approved the $5 billion project. the final vote had been stalled after some parents protested the expansion would do away with a daycare facility there but stanford agreed to relocate that. the expansion includes reconstruction of stanford hospital and clinics and expansion of the children's center. >> coming up, all packed up with nowhere to go. hundreds of summer campers are out of luck and parents may not get refunds. an official city vote to answer the question, how yellow is too yellow? this paint problem gets resolved. >> yellow means slower, none of that in the south bay. smooth drive but i'm following the sigalert and potentially deadly accident in daly city. >> mike is sending those to

transplant seven years ago. seemed healthy until his body started to reject the transplant. doctors were preparing to give him a temporary artificial heart as early as this week but his heart failed yesterday. >> a fund has been set up for his wife and young son at the bank of the west branch in  morgan hill. >> hundreds of bay area kids with diabetes looking forward to camp will be staying home. you wouldn't tell from the website still advertising but the diabetes society pulled the plug on its summer camps in the mountains and lake tahoe. it doesn't have the funds to run the program and now parents are demanding answers. they want to know why they weren't warned and why the diabetes society sent out a message about refunds that said we'll make our best effort to return your contribution.

the battle over the colors has been going on for months with some neighbors saying the colors are an eye sore and detract from local businesses. the city council got involved in the problem because the pizza joint is located in a historic building. the colors should be toned down sometime this week. >> mike's talking about this sigalert. >> good morning. we'll take you out to daly city. serious situation, detail came in because bob arrived on the scene. it looks like a pedestrian was hit at the off ramp from northbound 280 to 19th. this is a major interchange. lighter flow of traffic but if you need to take that junipero serra is the exit. the big news is we may have had a loss of life so we're following this. bob's got a report coming up. a live look shows you, the bay bridge. it looks dark from this shot. the clouds are drifting through.

i took this shot at my own risk. we have trouble seeing the bridge. there are clouds and a wind advisory. that's probably what's blowing the clouds. >> days after a baseball fan fell over the railing and died at rangers stadium another fan almost met a similar fate at the home run derby. take a look. in phoenix in the upper right-hand corner. good golly. you see a fan hanging from the rail in the outfield stands to reach for a home run ball. luckily his friends and his brother caught him by the arms and legs and pulled him from the brink of death. it happened the same day as the memorial service for a fan who died falling over a rail while trying to catch a ball at the texas rangers home game. are local students getting priced out of the csu system? a round of tuition hikes at public universities. and life stolen. jaycee dugard's memoir hits
