good morning to you, 7:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. today in oakland, the city park commission will weigh in on a controversial dog park. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in oakland with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. some neighbors say the geese create enough of a mess out here without adding a dog park to it in a prominent location. that's when the idea of a second spot came up just behind those trees near children's fairyland. the first astro park has open space and preliminary approval near the grand lake theater.

good morning to you. it's 7:56 right now. i'm lawyer garcia-cannon. chalk another huge win up for hall of fame quarterback joe montana. montana's proposal to build a luxury hotel, upscale restaurant and sports bar across the street from the proposed niners stadium took a big step forward. santa clara city council said it would work exclusively from montana and his group for the next 18 months. that means no other companies can build on two empty lots in santa clara. montana's group is convinced their hotel and sports bar will turn santa clara into a destination. >> what do you think of the vote? >> it's always good to win. it's a long way from the process. >> city council went against the city manager's recommendation to open up the process to everyone

and make the bidding competitive. the hope is to have the hotel and restaurant up and running when the stadium opens up for business, assuming, of course, there is a new stadium. all right. time to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's got a look at our forecast. >> we're not scoring any touchdowns if you're looking for warm weather this time of year. we have a significant cooldown that continues. i'm thinking until about tuesday we'll see much cooler than average weather. this morning we're noticing reduced visibility especially around the water sources this morning. take it easy in places like hayward where you fall into four miles, six miles in san mateo. this afternoon, low cloud cover makes for a cooler than average day along the coast. mostly cloudy from san francisco through fairfield, 73 later in fairfield. just 60 in the city today. that means if you're going to be headed here for work or play, make sure you bring a jacket with you with the windchill factor later on today, it's going to feel more like 52

killed jackie's three daughters. for the first time, jackie is writing about that accident, her paralyzing loss and the hope she now carries. jackie asks, how does a person go from being like a sister to me, adored by my girls and cherished by my husband, to being the one who ruined our lives? in a raw, unflinching account, jack jackie describes how her life starts town ravle. who says something is wrong withan aunt diane. she was stunned to learn the most responsible person i knew, her sister in law was driving high and drunk. >> diane schuyler had a blood alcohol content of .19%. the legal limit for intoxication is.-08%. >> reporter: shuler drove the red minnie fan the wrong way on the taconic state parkway for almost two miles until she hit an suv, killing three people in that vehicle and five in her van. herself, her daughter, and

jackie's three girls. emma, the big sister. 7-year-old allison, with the infectious smile. and 5-year-old katie, the baby. i was so dazed with grief, jackie writes, i would wander out miff room or out of house at all hours. i didn't know what i was doing, searching for the girls? my friends and family would gently steer me back where i belonged. people wept outside this long island church as jackie's husband warren, eulogized his daughter. >> cherish your children. cherish your children. and don't ever forget. >> jackie cannot. her girls' bedrooms are untouched. their birthdays still celebrated. her extended family are still split, by diane's husband vehement defense of his wife. >> she is not an alcohol. and something medically had to have happened. >> jackie is upset that her brother-in-law gave hbo permission about the crash

called "there's something wrong with aunt diane." the fact that they used my daughter emma's last words as a title only makes it that much more painful. the lone survivor of the accident is diane's son, brian. jackie's god son, but she stays away from him. i have to be able to trust myself around him and right now i don't. i want to reach out and hug him and at the same time try to shake answers out of him. jackie is trying to adjust to her new reality. but even going out can be a challenge. i think people are whispering, wondering how i can be having fun, as if i've forgotten the girls. they can't imagine how i feel a couple of hours later when we get back home and there's no babysitter to pay. though jackie wishes every day to be in heaven with her daughters, in her mind, they have other plans for her. this fall, jackie and her husband warren are expecting a baby. now, jackie says she is amazed

by the outpouring from total strangers. they have received thousands of cards and letters and offers of help, most notably from manhattan fertility doctor, who may have given them perhaps the best medicine of all. matt. >> all right, anne thompson for us on this story. thank you. janice caplan, a writer for "ladies home journal." good morning for you. >> good morning. >> i was haunted by the accident two years ago. i was haunted again reading this piece. >> yes. >> and yet, i think everyone should read it, especially parents. it makes you stop and think about some very important issues. >> the raw pain that jackie feels comes across in this article, and what struck me about jackie when a tragedy like this happens, we all think why it couldn't be us, why it couldn't be anybody we know. and jackie walked in, you're every woman, you're everybody. >> do you have a sense for why she wanted to write this with you now? is this in part in some ways of

her healing process? >> i think so. when something horrible happens, you look for that one strand of good. and for jackie, that one strand of good may be helping other people in a tough situation go on. >> this part of the article where she talks and writes about walking around in this daze of grief, where she would leave the house at all times of day, perhaps even looking for her children, searching for her children. is she leading a more normal life now? >> i think so. she was reliving that same day over and over. every day she woke up, thought it was that sunday morning again. >> in that article, she says people always ask her how she feels about her sister-in-law, diane schuyler. you can't imagine how complex that question is we're talking about a woman she thought was the most responsible person in her life, who ends up taking the lives of her three daughters. >> exactly. unbelievably complicated and painful. somebody who you love, your family has loved.

your families have always spent time together, you trust your three most precious children with them. you can't explain it. >> it's a tragedy upon a tragedy. there was this fracturing of this family, even among the survivors, the people left behind. they no longer communicate with one another. >> jackie and her husband have managed to stay together, which is difficult in a situation like this. they've been strong together. but, of course this was his sister and jackie talks about looking at the pain in his eyes, and knowing the many sources of that. >> expecting a child in the fall. i mean, one of the messages from the article is the importance of moving forward. no matter how severe the tragedy. >> exactly. and the great courage of doing that and the great sense of hope and inspiration that that -- whatever has happened and knowing how perhaps we can't always protect our children, you still have to go forward. >> keeping their daughters' memories alive. tell me about the foundation.

back now at 8:19 with more of our special series, how to live to 100. this morning we're focusing on the science of longevity. reaching the century mark, is it possible for everyone? here's nbc's chief medical editor. >> reporter: there are approximately 70,000 centenarians living in the united states today. and some scientists say that the first person who will live to their 150th birthday had already been born. but who are these centenarians going to be and can we increase our chances of becoming one of them? >> the signs of aging is becoming really popular because there's so much more out there as a consumer to take control of

their health and manage their aging. >> reporter: in 2009 three scientists won the nobel prize for the research on one of the most exciting developments on the aging forefront. telomeres are structures on the chromosomes that shorten as people age. think of them as a plastic tips on a shoestring. people with shorter telomeres are more likely to develop illnesses and die earlier. the science is far from complete but some laboratories have seized this opportunity and are offering tests that measures a person's telomere length. this laboratory is the only lab in the united states to offer telomere testing. the cost, $200. >> it can serve as a wake-all call for some people. it's a measure on how well you're ageing on the inside. so for some people it can tell them that maybe they're aging faster than they expect and maybe they can make some major lifetime changes. >> reporter: i decided toby own

every one of those things takes a hit. that to me says you can override your genes and environmental factors. perhaps even though i've cleaned up my act since then, i live a pretty good life now, there's still room for improvement. >> there is. your genes are set but how your genes are translated and transcripted you have an affect with your lifestyle choices. >> on that point then you talk about what you can do as for nutritional profile tests, take your medication, exercise, decrease body fat, meditate, reduce stress. that last point -- >> stress is huge. i must tell you, this doesn't shock me. >> no. >> it's sobering to me. >> it shocked me, though. >> it's sobering to me. i wish it weren't what it is. but i can't tell you that i'm absolutely shocked. i expected it to not get a great result and to tell myself to get my act together. >> does that mean -- for $200, anyone can have this done? the question is, is it worth it? are you -- do you think it was worth it for you to now know

against the 20-year-old. back on june 15th, marvin was pulled off a u.s. airways plane at sfo for allegedly refusing to pull up his sagging pants. he was arrested on suspicion of battery of a police officer, resisting arrest, and trespassing. now, earlier this morning we talked to the d.a. he said his decision on how to move forward was easy to make. he tells us he got the case just on monday. >> our conclusion, after reviewing all of the facts of this incident, this was a case that we don't think belongs in a courtroom and we think a jury would tell us that if taken into the courtroom. >> laura, just yesterday, more than 100 people rallied at san francisco's city hall, including his mother showing support for him. he was headed back to albuquerque when this happened where he plays football for the university of new mexico. >> good news for that thank you very ly. thank you very much. it's 8:27. traffic after this.

inning. were you allowing yourself to dream that it might come to you? >> it's everybody's dream. i he pulled it deep. last june i was with the other thousands of people. we were just trying to get a picture of history. and so he hit the ball. everybody is like, threw their head up looking at it and the ball got bigger and bigger and bigger. then i see my dad kind of jump across the crowd. and unfortunately he didn't get it. it kind of rolled in front of me. >> congratulations on that. you were a part of history. >> yeah. >> how long did it take you to decide to give that ball back? right away i knew that i wanted to give the ball back to jeter. i didn't know what i wanted at the time. to be honest with you, it happened so quickly when i finally got to sit down, i finally got a second to process it and i really just wanted to give the ball back to jeter. he deserves it.

it's 9:26 right now. a rocky seaside climb in hawaii turned deadly for a 22-year-old man from sunnyvale. police say paul died as he climbed up a cliff and a wave knocked him into the ocean, carrying him about 100 yards out to sea. rescuers found him face down in the water, tried to give him cpr. he later died at a hospital in oahu. he was the second victim swept out to sea over the weekend. the family of david pots will return home on thursday. rescuers called off the search
