we've got your full forecast. there is a warm-up on the way. i'll tell you when coming up. let's get you to work on time. more on that sinkhole. >> i do. this is a huge hole in the road. it is astonishingly large from what i understand. 30 feet by 30 feet, i don't know, maybe -- i don't think it's the depth. we'll see as bob redell is going to arrive. this is on highway 87. the slow lane closed heading out of downtown. a concern because as the sun comes up and news travels, commuters in the northbound direction will know about it likely to slow down. we don't need additional slowing for the commute. we're tracking this. we'll bring you updates as bob gets on scene. >> we'll check back. 5:01. an interesting development in the case of bryan stow. so far police have only identified one suspect. now marla tellez joins us with the latest twist.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. it seems every week sometimes every day bryan stow remains in the ic unit at sf general the case around his beating takes a new twist and turn. that is what's happening today, this brand new development we're learning the main suspect in stow's beating, giovanni ramirez, well, his girlfriend has been arrested by the las vegas metropolitan police department. 26-year-old denise pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges of possession and trafficking of meth and possessing a dangerous weapon. how this relates to the stow case, los angeles police say denise is a person of interest but up until her latest arrest they could not find her. according to online records i found that she was arrested saturday, july 9, and is being held in lieu of $1,000 bail. the lapd considers ramirez, her

boyfriend, the primary suspect in the march 31 beating that left stow with severe brain injuries. ramirez has not been formally charged. currently he is serving a 10-month prison sentence for a parole violation. as for stow, his family likes to keep the public updated by entering the latest on the website support for bryan stow.com. the latest entry was entered yesterday and they tell us that nurses sit him up in a chair every day. they did this on monday. they had the tv on when they did this. he's sitting upright. when they turned it off his left arm went up and out as if to tell his parents wait, i don't want the tv off and his parents took that as a pretty remarkable sign. also i want to mention that coming up at 5:30 i'm going to tell you about a fundraiser happening tomorrow to support bryan stow. >> and it's so good to hear those continue. and that responsiveness of his.

thank you. it's 5:03. an unsolved berkeley homicide is getting a boost from a south american country. the chilean government has added several thousand dollars to the $20,000 reward to find the killer of adolfo. he was shot and killed in an early morning robbery in september 2010. it was his 35th birthday. they had recently moved to the city with his fiancee. there are few details so far on the suspects. >> the teenager accused of shooting and killing an infant says he is not guilty. he entered the plea yesterday in front of a judge and the parents of 3-month-old isaac. he is suspected of shooting at the family on june 5, killing the baby and injuring his parents. police think he mistook the family for members of a rival gang that attacked him in may.

he is expected back in court in august to seat preliminary hearing date. the man accused of killing two will not face the death penalty. the announcement was made at a hearing yesterday. a judge suspended the proceedings against wu until a psychologist can determine if he is competent to stand trial. investigators think he killed two in january because their shop, he thought, was stealing his business. >> this morning we may learn more about the fatal officer-involved shooting. christie smith is live where the b.a.r.t. board will meet and give a report on the july 3 shooting at the civic center station. >> reporter: good morning. i checked the b.a.r.t. website and i can tell you this general manager's report on the shooting is at the very top of the agenda coming out 11 days after that fating officer-involved shooting. there are now four separate

entities looking into whether those b.a.r.t. police officers acted appropriately on that day when they shot 45-year-old charles hill on july 3rd according to b.a.r.t.'s police chief hill a transient attacked two b.a.r.t. officers with a pair of knives and a glass bottle. one officer shot him to death. that sparks protest on monday t same station where nearly 100 ro testers delayed service during the evening commute. at that point b.a.r.t. police made no arrests but this group was formed in response to the shooting death of oscar grant in 2009 by then officer mehserle. they say they want b.a.r.t. police disbanded. they say they have zero tolerance for disruption of service. they aren't saying what extra steps they might take. the board meeting does have

public comment. it's at 9:00 at bart headquarters near lake merit. >> thank you very much. campers looking to get out may want to be more careful about washing their hands. a virus hit camp mather out of yosemite park. the department tells officials or the san francisco examiner rather, over two weeks 11 at the camp reported symptoms such as sudden vomiting and nausea. an extensive cleaninging is now under way. officials don't know what the illness is but they suspect it could be noro virus. the fight between dog lovers in oakland continues as they haggle over the location of the new dog park. owners snapped at each other last night. the issue is some of them want to put a dog park where the old

police horse stables stand. others think it should be in a more accessible location, namely astro park at the corner of lakeshore and macarthur. that plan has been in the works for at least 10 years. >> the park within a park would take up 24% of the existing field at the park. that would leave more than an acre for pick-up soccer games and other sports. >> last night's meeting lasted four hours. in end the boat was die tied. still no final decision yet. what happened to the dog days of summer? i want to check win christina. >> old man winter back in the bay. he doesn't want to go. we've got this interesting setup. stubborn area of low pressure that was sitting to our north just kind of sitting and spinning over the past couple of days. it hasn't moved that much. we were expecting it to move inland than it has.

as a result of that really stubborn low, a significant dip in the jet stream our temperatures about the same as yesterday. really not warmer except for maybe at the immediate coast we're not going to see as much fog. only by a couple of degrees. i ramped up the temperatures in san francisco by about two degrees. 54 degrees right now, 54 in san mateo and 55 degrees in sunnyvale. we've got a pretty good amount of cloud cover this morning. serving as a blanket, trapping in what daytime heat we did have. as we head through this afternoon, 63 degrees, 58 in santa cruz. and look at this, though. this is a good indication that it's going to start to get warmer toward the coast. 72 in santa rosa. you'll lime and even napa by 3 to 4 degrees. a comfortable day especially in the south and east bay. you can't ask for better conditions if you are trying to save on the bill you don't want to run the ac or the heater.

watching. futures have turned higher perhaps on that news after we were sitting in the red last night. that's after a major ratings agency moody's warned that it may cut the u.s. credit rating because of the rising risk of a government default. the u.s. reached its borrowing limit in may and we could run out of cash starting august 2 if congress doesn't raise the debt ceiling. that would push up rates on bonds and mortgages and loans because they are autumn linked to treasuries. asian marketing were cautious. and we get a ton of data on unemployment, retail sales, producer prices. yesterday we narrowed our losses, rose 44 points on the dow, 12,491 the nasdaq added 15 to 27.96. forclousure activity rose in june, the first in three months as banks start to work through a

bag dog. things slowed the foreclosure process. filings fell 29% in the first half of the year in the wake of last year over how they were handling the documents. banks are worried about a flood of homes hitting the market. in california more than 263,000 homes have received a foreclosure notice in the first six months of this year. borders stands on the brink of liquidation. the company's creditors rejected the bid from a private firm and no other suitors emerged in front of the sunday deadline. they may have to close the remaining stores and go out of business. hard times for the book seller. >> thank you, kick. >> a nurse is starting a fund-raiser to help needy children. sue is starting her buck for a

>> welcome back everyone. a good thursday morning to you. see if traffic is picking up. this shot's from the south bay. keeping our eye on a sinkhole that is at 87 and alma this morning. said to be pretty large. we have bob redell out there on the scene investigating for us. groundbreaking will begin on a project to provide relief for drivers through novato. caltrans will begin the work on the first phase of the widening project. it will add a high occupancy lane to northbound 101 from

notice 37 to atherton avenue. and southbound 101 from novato creek to highway 37. caltrans says the project will widen and improve 101 between novato and petaluma. that's way north. now we're talking south. we've got a problem with a sinkhole in the south bay. new updates? >> bob's giving us a few live pictures. it doesn't look as dramatic but there is more to the story. let's get a quick peek ever it. it's reported as a 30-foot sinkhole. this moves over to the other side from what i can tell. the impact for the off ramp and the slow lane of 87 and alma avenue. bob's got the update. we're watching this on the map that i circled as we come back here. it's on the southbound side. you have flashing lights, you hear the construction, bound to

with a look at the forecast. >> good morning. another cooler than average day across the bay area. temperatures running about 10 to 15 degrees below where they traditionally sit at this point in july. i'll let you know when warmer days will arrive. it's on the seven-day outlook. that's your hint. let's get to you work on time. mike's busy. >> the good news is that antioch not already bitty. highway 4, different than yesterday where we saw speeds down in the 30s by this time. just 5:31, now it's all right but bay point showing about a 52-minute speed here. in the south bay we're talking about no major traffic flow right now but there is a big sinkhole reported so this is causing construction and potential for major delays. it's reported as a giant sinkhole but bob is on the scene. can you provide us with more perspective? >> reporter: good morning. the sinkhole isn't as large as advertised but it's certainly

significant enough that caltrans has had to shut down the alma avenue off ramp from southbound 87 which is what we're standing in now, and also one of the lanes, the right lane of southbound 87. you can see why, because of this depression in the road. it's on the shoulder, it extends into the lane itself and on the other side of the concrete you've got the same situation where you've got a depression in the shoulder. if you can look under the roadway it does go down quite a bit. there is a gap between the roadway and the gravel that caltrans has put in there. it's about a foot. it's hard to judge how far this extends under the roadway. caltrans workers we spoke with said they first noticed this depression and what was a road patch around tuesday night. they did a quick fix of putting the gravel in, and last night they compressed the gravel, took some out to see how far this extends. when they did that they had to

shut down a road, this is not safe for any one to drive over. they are waiting for an engineer, thinking 6:00 to 7:00, that person kill come out. do their assessment and try to figure out what can be done to more permanently fix this. that's the assessment they need to make. the good news is this is in the reverse commute direction. this is southbound 87. again the alma road off ramp being shut down. northbound direction, this is not going to have an impact. however, you might have the looky-lou factor. that might slow your northbound commute back in san jose. as far as the road it's in the southbound direction. reporting live, bob redell. >> great update at what's going on. 5:33. this afternoon a decision in the devastating pit bull mauling case that left a toddler dead

and his grandfather in jail. today a judge will decide if he sends 53-year-old steven to trial. three of his bit bulls mauled his 2-year-old step-grandson. when the toddler wander out to the garage where the dogs were kept. the district attorney wants to charge with second-degree murder because he knew the dogs were dangerous. we were the first station to interview him after his first night in jail. at the time he told us he knew at least one of the dogs was aggressive. >> san jose investigators are trying to identify the body of a man found next to a golf course. a fisherman discovered the body near capital expressway. special crews trained for water rescue were called in to recover the body. because the scene is located at heavily wooded trail crews had to hike to the area.

>> a new twist in the case of giants fan bryan stow. we've learned this morning that police have arrested the girlfriend of giovanni ramirez, he's the only maimed suspect in the case at this point. marla tellez joins us live with the latest. an update on stows condition as well. >> bryan stow has been here almost two mots. he arrived may 16 from l.a., the good news is his family says he is showing more signs of life and coherency, he still, though, is in serious condition in the ic unit. while she showing more signs of-so is the case around his beating. the newest develop you mentioned it. giovanni ramirez, he is the main suspect serving a 10 month sentence for a parole violation while his girlfriend has been arrested by the laeft

metropolitan boys department. denise pleaded not guilty charges of possession and trafficking of meth and possessing a dangerous weapon. los angeles mess say she is a person of interest in the stow beating but up until her arrest on saturday they could not find her. she's locked up in the clark county detention center held in lieu of $1,000 bail. they still consider him the primary suspect that left stow with severe brain injury. here is the catch. ramirez has not been formally charged for the beating. as i mentioned the 31-year-old is behind bars right now for a parole violation. since the beating there has been an outpouring of support. there is a fund-raiser in san francisco hosted by kfox.

of the alta mont pass we saw slowing in both directions through the heart of livermore where i circled here. but then over the last two minutes we've seen the averages come down to 14-minute drive. watch for slowing over to police pleasanton. the y moves nicely. the san mateo bridge. we hear about northbound 880 at 92, reports of a stall, disabled vehicle in the area. it might be in the lanes, possibly the slow lane out of union city over to the san mateo bridge. the oakland area we see a distinguish volume now, as we wend this shot i want to point out there are some glowing lights. there is a difference in the moisture in the air. not as much need for the wipers. >> hate to be that guy stuck on the highway. the disabled vehicle. >> the worst. >> a lot of people talking about the traffic mess-up in l.a., the

democrats say that version of events is a little overblown. they say the president said enough is enough, he urged lawmakers to get something done, though, soon. the president has set tomorrow as a deadline to try to come to some agreement at least about moving forward. they met every day this week, they will be back at it this afternoon. that is the stakes growing higher. moody's said it may downgrade america's credit rating from aaaf. there is no deal, looks like the u.s. is going to default on loans, that would have a huge impact. a lot on the line, another meeting today. we'll see if they make progress at all. >> thank you for the update. 5:45. the family of a bay area man swept out to sea in hawaii will return home. 44-year-old david potts died when he fell into a blow hole on the island ever maui. though his body has not been recovered his family will return

today. he is one of two bay area natives to die in hawaii. paul was climbing when a wave crashed into him and carried him out to see. his friends say he was looking forward to this trip and they cannot believe he is gone. >> for it to happen -- sorry. for it to happen to him, he was the best kid you could ever possibly. >> rescue crews found him 100 yards out face down in the water. he died at the hospital. >> 5:46. teenage girl also in the hospital after she was pulled out to sea by strong tide. had to be rescued by the coast guard. the rescue happened at tennessee cove north of the golden gate bridge. the 17-year-old was swimming when she got stuck in a heavy current on the point. it happened as the tide was

throughout the afternoon, 70s. 68 degrees today in santa cruz. not a great beach day but as we head through the weekend you'll get those beach days. we climb in temperature each day all the way through wednesday. by wednesday, we see the average highs for this time of year back in the bay area, and boy, then temperatures looks like we'll sky rocket. you might enjoy this cooldown while it lasts. >> sure will. thank you. also enjoying the u.s. women soccer players winning the world cup on sunday. if they do ittite going to be in large part because of abby who led team usa to victory scoring the go ahead goal against france. 3-1. the win means the u.s. women are headed to their first women's world cup finals since 1999. they are going to play company on sunday.

come to die. >> a little spooky for early morning don't you think. the guy need as nose. tonight the final movie debuts in theaters nationwide. it is the epic finale of the battle between good and evil forces in the wizardry world. we have a lot of major films it will open after midnight. we checked online. these are some of the theaters showing the film on multiple screens. theaters in oak ridge mall in san jose, at the great mall in milpitas, union landing, the metreon and the regal jack london in oakland. so you're covered. got your tub of popcorn, watch harry. i want to check the commute and see how things are looking. >> we're fighting the good battle. so far the good drive is winning as you approach the city from

either the east bay or the north bay. golden gate and the bay bridge moving smoothly. and non-commute directions. approaching the san mateo bridge you might have an issue. we have a disabled vehicle at the 92 off ramp and a traffic break has been called to remove that. no injuries. slow approaching the area but heading west you can get to the san mateo bridge without much issue off 880. heading west with the taillights. we see a little fog or low clouds. tougher to see the high rise. the peninsula moving but the fog may thicken so be aware of that. the south bay, a nice flow with the northbound speed sensors, the southbound side of 87 is where we continue to watch the closure of the slow lane and the alma avenue off ramp. bob showed us it's not as dramatic as it sounded. on the ride side, the flashing lights heading out of downtown they have the lane blocked.
