today, thursday, july 14th, 2011. from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and ann curry. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and welcome today on this thursday morning. i'm ann curry. >> and i'm matt lauer. and this case in brooklyn has shaken the murder of this 8-year-old boy. >> it's shaken anyone thinking about this as a parent. the victim just eight years out, begged his parents to be allowed to walk home from summer camp by himself. they finally agreed. police say it was happensubstance he asked a man for help who would wind up killing him. a new arrest tied to the tabloid phone hacking scandal in britain. lawmakers here at home in the u.s. are calling for their own investigation.

we're going to have details on that. do you know how to secure your cell phone to prevent people from hacking it? we're going to run through four things you need to know to keep hackers at bay. >> also this morning, daniel radcliffe will be here, the star, of course of the wildly successful "harry potter" franchise and the final film is opening tomorrow. it has already set the record for advanced ticket sales and he'll be opening up about the series as it comes to an end and a personal issue that he struggled with. we want to begin with the chilling confession from the alleged killer of an 8-year-old in new york city. jeff rossen has details on that. some of the details are disturbing, jeff. >> reporter: this sure are. good morning to you. this young boy, 8-year-old boy asked his parents over and over again, can i please walk home from summer camp all by himself. parents finally said yes. they rehearsed the route, only

about seven blocks, chose a halfway point. eastbound ran through it and practiced it together. when the boy did it all by himself he walked down this street and something went wrong. he got lost right over here at this intersection. he asked a stranger for directions and police say that man took him and then killed him. wednesday night thousands mourn the loss of a little boy. these are the last images ever taken of 8-year-old leibby krets xi showing him walking down the sidewalk on the way to meet his mom. he took a wrong turn and police say asked a man for directions. you can see leibby walking behind him. they walk back and police say leibby gets into the man's car, never to be seen again. >> my pain is because i know the kid. i saw him. very friendly and nice boy who is a really nice boy. >> reporter: after days of

searching, police got a tip from a dentist's office on the block where leibby disappeared. police rushed to the home of 35-year-o 35-year-old. >> when detectives asked where the boy was he nodded towards the kitchen where they detected blood on the freezer handle. >> reporter: law enforcement sau sources say he confessed, leibby watched tv and then fell asleep. the next day he told police he saw the flyers about leibby's disappearance and told them, i panicked and was afraid, went for a towel to smother him. police say the boy's body was dismembered with body parts found in the suspect's freezer and in the nearby dumpster. police sources say the confession ends, i understand this may be wrong and i'm sorry for the hurt that i have caused. i need time to process what's

happening in this neighborhood. >> reporter: this is a tight knit community where orthodox jews live together and protect each other. his accused killer an orthodox jew. >> this was not a stranger that came from somewhere else. someone from within the community. >> reporter: he lived with his father and worked at the hardware store. no record of violent crime. he's divorced, once married to this woman. >> i never once saw anything out of the ordinary or anything like that ever. >> reporter: his lawyer had only this to say. >> our condolences to the family of the victim. we'll let the judicial process take its course. no further comment. >> reporter: he is now charged with second degree murder in new york city and matt, we're told that investigators may actually dig up his backyard later today searching for evidence of other crimes. >> jeff rossen in brooklyn. thank you very much. it's five minutes after the hour. here's ann. >> now to washington and the

heated showdown over raising the debt ceiling. both sides will be back to the negotiating table later this afternoon, this after lawmakers received a dire warning about what could happen to the nation's credit rating if a deal is not reached. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house. >> reporter: when you thought the debt talks couldn't get uglier, they did with both sides admitting the discussion became a bit combative at times. wall street is worried about washington. late wednesday moody's one of the big three credit rating agencies warning it might have to lower the rating if lawmakers don't come to an agreement on raising the debt ceiling. in the statement it said the action was prompted by the possibility that the debt limit woil not be raised in time to prevent a missed payment on u.s. bonds with a small but rising risk of ashort-lived default.

economists say if the aaa rating is lowered it will throw the financial markets into chaos and the cost of borrowing would go up to everything from morlts to car loans. ben bernanke warned. >> i think the worst outcome if we don't raise the limit, at some point we default on debt and that would create as i said before, a huge financial calamity. >> reporter: sources say the president knew about the moody's warning as he headed into wednesday meeting which all sides describe as tense. republican majority leader eric cantor cited the president as saying i have reached my limit. he left saying i'll see you tomorrow. the two sides couldn't even agree about what happened in the meeting. according to cantor, the president gotta agtag agitated stormed out. the aide said it was cantor who

rudely interrupted the president three times. there was even rancor outside the meeting. dealing with the democrats is a lot like dealing with jell-o. the topic will be taxes and president obama has said on friday he wants lawmakers to figure out whether they want to continue to pursue this deficit reduction package or whether they want to take another course. ann? >> kristen, thanks. jim cramer, the host of "mad money." good morning. worst case scenario the deal is not reached and the us credit rating is lowered. what happens next? >> interest rates will go up because foreign countries and foreign banks, what they do is they sell any sort of sovereign bond, what our u.s. debt is called, when they see debt ratings, housing slows down and job creation definitely slows down and stock market probably gets hit too. >> you're saying on august 3rd, what happens to the market?

>> we'll have a sell-off for everything other than gold. dollar will go down. our bonds will go down. i don't want to panic people, you have to expect to repeal some of the loss from the stock market. >> you say the warning from moody will cause a little sell-off today? >> let's accent wait little. i don't think panic is the right thing to do here. this is a shot across the bell. you have to understand the ratings agency's predid meant. they can't be oblivious, they are doing their job. let's hope congress and the president are doing their job. >> you are talking about main street and wall street, yesterday we heard michele bachmann say it's not true if the debt ceiling isn't raised we'll lose the full faith and credit of the united states. who's right on this? >> i'm from wall street. i deal with people and used to be a big buyer and seller of bonds. when you're the chinese, they

are the largest debt holder, they are not talking or listening to michelle bachmann. they are listening to very prudent treasury officials in china that said we don't need this junk. let's sell. that's how rates go up. >> then what is the bottom line for the so-called recovery? >> this is the time of thing where you're trying to create jobs which we desperately need to do, you do the exact opposite of what's happening in washington, a quick deal, any resolution will create a level of certainty we don't have in this country. no wonder business isn't doing well. >> your gut on whether they'll get a deal? >> i think they have to get a deal. the financial calamity that ben bernanke talks with is a reality. without a deal, nothing looks that good in this country. >> jim cramer, thanks so much. you can catch jim on "mad money" at 6:00 and 11:00 p.m. eastern time on cnbc. here's matt. there's been a new arrest in

the phone hacking scandal in britain, this as members of congress are now calling for an investigation to determine if any misconduct happened here in the united states. nbc's stephanie gosk is in london with the details on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt, a 60-year-old arrested at his home, neil wallace, former deputy editor of "news of the world." we are learning rebecca brooks, now an executive for news corp has agreed to testify in front of parliament next week. so far rupert and younger son james have declined that invitation. even after the phone hacking scandal forgsed news corp to pull out of the biggest merger deal in history. >> order! the honorable lady will be quiet. >> reporter: unleashed another tirade in the walls of parliament. >> on an industrial scale at its worst dependent on links with

the british criminal underworld. >> reporter: david woodings says journalism will never be the same again. he and hundreds of others lost their jobs when news corp suddenly shutdown "news of the world". >> it is open season now. they are drawing blood and going for the kill. >> reporter: the scandal that blew up ten days ago with seven arrests so far has rocked the second largest media company in the world and is now spreading krogs the atlantic. there are calls on capitol hill for separate u.s.-led investigations. if "news of the world" bribed british police officers as scotland yard alleges, murdoch's company may have broken u.s. law. >> news corp is an american corporation and they are bound by american laws regardless of where the offense takes place. >> reporter: u.s. politicians are also latching on to an unconfirmed report from an unnamed source that "news of the

with a b sky b broadcasting and now he's had to withdraw because he knows the politicians were not going to -- >> not only the politicians wouldn't support it but do you think that deal is now dead because the people in murdoch's organization understand that there's probably more damaging evidence about to come out? >> when they did the inquiry in 2007, they said there was one road reporter and eight people had been hacked. yesterday i spoke to a senior officer at the metropolitan police who said 4,800 people's phones had been hacked and they haven't even started to get to bottom of the things that have been done. >> this has pulled back a curtain, if you will, and exposed a very dark side of tab lloyd journalist. you can almost hear this story being pulled across the atlantic yesterday with the senators writing letters to eric holder and congressmen waiting to mr. muler at the fbi. how much further does this go?

do you think this is a standard practice for tabloid newspaper and scandal magazines in the u.s.? >> it's hard to know. but imagine they said one reporter but now it was clearly widespread in the news of the world newsroom. are you telling me the people that work in that organization in this country never ever used the same tactics? they may not have but at the end of the day the pressure to deliver the kind of stories, the kind of access -- we're talking about the prime minister of the united kingdom's disabled son's medical records. stands in the house of commons yesterday and said the sunday times newspaper paid a criminal to procure those records. now, we can't confirm whether that's true but that's the level of interest that people have. when stories kept appearing in tabloid papers you had to ask yourself, how did they get that story? after i interviewed princess diana in 1995 we had our third child in '96 and she was incube

home. who did this and why? there are similarities to past attacks by a home grown terror group but no one has claimed responsibility. at this point nothing is being ruled out. the blast seemed to have been coordinated to kill and maim as many innocent people as possible. during your hour in places full of workers leaving carnage in the streets and survivors trying to save the wounded. the first just before 7:00 p.m. in a popular jewelry bazaar, then another in a wealthy business district. >> everyone was in blood, there was a lot of confusion and people were scared. >> reporter: about ten minutes after the first, a third bomb in a busy nearby neighborhood. ie.d.s were placed on motor bikes and road side. >> this was a coordinated attack by terrorists. >> reporter: it is the fourth large scale attack on this business part of india in eight years. the worst since the 2008 siege

by pakistani militants on hotels and other locations in the city leaving nearly 170 people dead after days of terror. many here haven't felt secure since and mumbai is once again on high alert. there's no indication that pakistani militants played a role in this. pakistan condemned the bombings as they started talking again about the differences since the 2008 attacks. natalie? >> michelle kosinski, thank you. secretary of state hillary clinton heads to turkey as she kicks off a 12-day tour, topping her to do list, increasing pressure on moammar gadhafi. she said his days in power are quote numbered. a water war is being waged on capitol hill where the house passed a bill that would cut the epa power to overrule decisions on water quality. the white house threatened to veto the bill saying it would

years? yes, we are that old. coming up, a look pack. >> it's been an extraordinary run. let's begin with the disappearance of susan powell. she left behind her husband, josh, and their two young boys. keith morrison has new details. keith, good morning. >> good morning. you know, it's just one of those baffling stories. you know there's a tragedy lying at the heart of this, but what? is there any chance she's aleve or is she dead? this has divided two families bitterly, eats put deep suspicions on susan's husband, but up until now, nobody has heard his side of the story, the powell family theories about what happened to susan. it has been 584 days since susan powell, wife of alt yeeight yea devoted mother, vanished. the last time anyone saw her,

december 7th, 2009. the circumstances of her disappearance, very strange. husband josh reports leaving the family house after midnight to take charlie and braden, then 2 and 4, on a mid winter camping trip into the desert in below zero temperatures leaving susan asleep at home. and by morning, she was gone. all that was left, a wet spot on the floor in the living room and this long running mystery. early on, josh was named a person of interest, but the police haven't made a public statement in months. nor has josh who took the boys and moved in with his dad near seattle. the family refusing all interview requests. until now. >> people didn't know that there are two distinct sides of susan. >> reporter: this is josh's father, steve. his theory? susan left her little boys and husband without saying good-bye and either killed herself or

more like ran off with another man. more to susan than left the eye, said steve. >> you know, she was very, you know -- as i say, kind of an open person in a sexual way. and i think with the opposite sex. >> reporter: steve powell says he feels comfortable making such statements because he's read susan powell's private journals, over 2,000 pages of susan's mostlied a less ept musings until the age of 20. so >> when susan was growing up, there was a lot of emotional abuse in the home. she talked to us about that, she talked to josh about that. >> reporter: steve paints a picture of an uneven woman, sexually aggressive from a very early age, prone to bouts of rage. he speaks of susan decompensating, slowly spirling out of control until he claims she left on her own for who really knows who or what. >> and it's difficult for us to

understand why she would walk away from them. it's difficult for us to understand why she would walk away from her parents, why she would walk away from josh. when you start reading her journal, josh says she was suicidal. >> reporter: all of they says it will be evident when they post the journal entries on a new website, a development susan's parents call hurtful and disgusting. >> i just want to make it clear that shed not leave her family, she was pot sexual not sexually being a sif or -- those allegations are completely baseless. >> you're pretty angry that the father-in-law decided it was his right to read those journals. >> absolutely. he had no right to do it. it's unconscionable that he would do it. i just cannot believe he would do that type of thing. and then to try and publish it and try to use that to attack my daughter? >> reporter: but the powells steadfast in josh's innocence are undeterred. >> we know where where we stand. we sleep well at night. we don't feel any guilt for

he was the best son could you ever imagine. i was so blessed. >> reporter: so something didn't add up when a sheriff's detective called her early one evening to say that the 19-year-old had died in a car crash. speeding through a spot sign and crashing in to a 2-year-old's bedroom. the car was going so fast that the engine broke free and slammed through four more rooms. luckily no one was inside. >> it was -- the worst moment of my life. >> reporter: at the hospital, her oldest son had something to tell her. >> he said max called me right before he died and said i smoked some legal stuff. i smoked that legal stuff. and my heart is pounding and i'm having a panic attack. >> reporter: white autopsy reports haven't been released

we're back at 7:44. we've been telling you an awful lot about that massive scandal in great britain. at least one tabloid accused of hacking the cell phones of politicians, even a murder victim. so you might be wondering how easy is it for your phone to get hacked? mario armstrong is a digital expert. you want to get people nervous, you start peopling about people's privacy. so let's start with that question. how easy is to get hacked? >> unfortunately, it's too easy. you can think about it, number one, so much much us are carrying smart phones today. there's been a 60% increase over the last year. and these things have operating systems, they run software.

they're like digital wallets. so people can access your account which can then change services or they can have you download software on to your phone. >> what does a hacker need or reporter need to adequately hack into your phone? how sophisticated is the equipment? >> it's not. a lot of people think it takes a lot. >> secret agent stuff. >> yeah, fbi level stuff. no, it's not. just calling your cellular account, getting a bill out of your trash could easily give anyone enough information or just knowing the phone number is enough information to call the carrier to try to have some things changed. >> so you're sitting at home or out on the street and you're using your cell phone and someone is targeting you, what can they getting a says to? your choice mai your voice mail? >> yes. >> can they listen to the phone calls i'm making while i'm making them? >> there's been a lot of discussion about tapping. i would say there's some technology out there that could

be used illegally. so, no, i don't think that's the biggest concern. >> can they getting a says to my contacts, the names and addresses i have store order my smart phone? >> i didnany data is susceptibl. >> and what about the pinking oig where they can figure out where you are? doctor s >> absolutely. gps is easy to get to. >> four major tips to avoid getting hacked. the first is use a pin code for your cell cellulular account. >> most people fail on this. you ask them to place a pin code so when you call in, they have to -- >> calls into your voice mail? >> calls in to your cellular account. >> so they can't call and say, hey, it's matt lauer. i need information. >> right. you can change settings and i

can have voice mail messages rerouted or have them e-mailed to me. >> you think that you should set up a strong lock code on your phone. that's the code i punch in just to use the phone. >> just to use the phone itself. and they also don't do this on -- many of the phones have a standby feature, so when it goes to sleep, you can say when it wakes up, it should be in a locked state. >> have a different strong password to access your e-mail. >> this is the weakest link. because everything routes back to e-mail. if you have to reset your password for any account, where do you get the information? typically in your e-mail. so the stronger the password on your e-mail, the better. you want at least te10 or 12 characters. georgia researchers found in two hours they could crack an 8 character password. >> and finally, know what you're downloadi downloading. >> because we love apps on our devices. we're quick to download them,

road above college and near highway 24. i spoke with investigators. they will be here for sometime. that's the latest. reporting live in observe land, christie smith. laura, back to you. >> thank you, christie. also this morning, a deadly big rig crash in san francisco. mike joins us with the latest. >> we'll take you out there. this is octavia boulevard at oak street affecting 101 and into san francisco. here is a live shot. there's a glimpse of the ucsf shuttle and the car carrier both involved in this accident. sounds like about 6:20 the car carrier was northbound on octavia when it hit the shuttle carrying employees to jobs at sf general. one person was ejected because the impact was so strong. they landed under the carrier. the person is dead on the scene. three other minor injuries. and this investigation expected to take at least three hours.

and while i've maj a huge number of films on those friends, i will still know all of them and i can take them with me into the rest of my life. >> at the same time, and not by design, it's come out in a magazine, which you've been very -- and surprised a lot of people, something you said. at one point, quote, i became so reliant on alcohol to enjoy stuff. >> yes. >> exactly when was this? >> i'd say it was between -- from the ages of 18 to 21. was when -- that period of my life. i mean, i stopped drinking last year, so just after i turned 21. yeah, and i suppose i just -- you know, it was something that i thought to make myself interesting and to make myself enjoy, you know, my life, i did become very reliant on it. and i think there's a moment when you realize something that is actually very -- ultimately very destructive has crept into

being a routine. so, that was the moment when i decided that -- that the amount i was drinking had led me to become unhappy. so, i stopped, with the help of friends and family. and, yeah, and the last year has been a lot more manageable and a lot better. i'm happier. >> peer pressure, being in the spotlight having to do with it? >> i don't know, to be honest with you. i don't know it's something affected by my life or something that i would have stumbled upon anyway had i never been harry potter. but i wouldn't put it down to peer pressure at all. if anything, the only pressure that was put on myself to drink and become good at it, which i never achieved. i was always very unsuccessful at it. but brought on by myself. >> i see. well, you know, on this point of celebrity, let me simply ask you, give you an opportunity to

respond to what's been going on, because you've been under the spotlight of tabloids in addition. what's going on in britain regarding this phone hacking scandal. i wonder if you have any thoughts on it. >> yeah. it's pretty awful. it's -- the fact that -- i mean, i'm sure it's been going on for a long, long time with actors and celebrities and all that kind of stuff. but people don't really care about that. frankly, are right not to care about that when you hear that they've tapped into servicemen's families phones and young milly dowler's phone and 9/11 families. i mean, it's pretty abject morality. so, i think, yeah, i mean, it's -- it's -- yeah, it's pretty disturbing. >> you sound angry about it. >> well, i think the whole country is. i think it's a shame that a paper that was so -- particularly with regard to the

a.m. when two inmates were using the phones in an area just outside the jail's booking office. when a guard opened the door, mccluskey and archie rushed and tried o fight their way to freedom. mccluskey who is serving blor burglary and parole was quickly subdued. but archie ran out of the facility. he spent three days on the run. the walker county jail was built in 1980 and does not meet today's building standards according to the commission. 70 to 85 times a day officers use this door to enter the inmate area. in a facility built today, they would be separated by two secured doors can. though he showed some ingenuity in his escape, when captured 70 miles from the jailhouse, archie ran out of ideas.

the escaped convict's mother was also arrested. >> what is the charge? >> apprehension. >> she has actually had information that has hindered our investigation. >> reporter: with four decades of incarceration ahead of him, he probably won't be running out the door anytime soon. he's been moved to the state penitentiary. some of you may be wondering why they did not use guns while rushed by the inmates. in texas facilities the guards are not to carry firearms. the threat of losing a weapon to a prisoner is too great. >> i guess that makes sense. didn't work this time. >> no. just a very brief taste of freedom for that prisoner. >> thank you very much. still ahead, what you can do to ease the stress of your next family vacation. but up next the emmy nominations

>> a shocking number. it had a pretty troubled back story, but i believe i saw at least two or three. that's a huge coup for the kennedys. >> and in the comedy series which was the last category announced, big bang theory, glee, modern family, office, parks and recreation, 30 rock. usually suspects there. >> i'd go back to drama and say the big coup there was game of throwns getting nominated for hbo. that's a show that's not necessarily for the emmy voteth voting audience. it's fantasy which usually gets snubbed. i also think in the comedy actress category, melissa mccarthy getting nominated, that's the first season of mike and molly. there are a lot of strong contenders. i think the snub there was leah

this morning on today's travel, the ultimate survival guide if family travel. whether by plane, train or automobile, you want to reach your destination with the least amount of hassle. kate maxwell is here with great tips. kate, good to see you. the first thing you say is if you're traveling by plane, it's best -- and you're traveling with kids, the first flight of the day. why? >> because they're less susceptible to delays. with a bit of luck, your child -- you'll get there in time for nap time. >> and you like the idea that in the very early part of the day, the kids are up, they're alert, they are able to get through the

airports and then fall asleep on the plane. >> who wants to be in the airport with a weather delay and a crank country child. >> and if you're going into the security area, look for the family lines. i didn't even know there was such a thing. >> most airports do have them. they tend to share a line with airline personnel. make sure you get your liquids out so the tsa officer can see them. rules are relaxed for families. >> so you're allowed to bring more because baby formula, things like that? >> exactly. >> what about strollers. i see moms and dads hassling with this all the time. you've got a baby asleep in a stroller. in a family line, do you still have to take that baby out? >> you have to at that time baby out. if your child can walk, walk with them.time baby out. if your child can walk, walk with them. otherwise carry them and do not put your child or baby on the belt. this has happened.

>> every once in a while, gets you on the bad parents list. you go to a hotel, you think it's a great idea to stock the kitchen but you at the tiyou ge. >> high end hotels do this. you can ask them to stock it with formula, baby food, milk, cereal. >> do they charge you only for the products they buy or do they charge and you surcharge? >> it varies, so check that out. >> but again it means if they put it in the kitchen or hotel room for you, you're not dragging it in your suitcases. >> which costs money. >> trains roomier. you say get a discount. what are available? >> amtrak offers all sorts of family discounts. you have to book more than three days in advance, but search and see what you can find. there are also discounts for veterans, students. if you can, don't pay full price. kids under two go for free.

>> and don't no get this are luggage restrictions on stratra as well. gr you get two bags under 50 pounds plus a personal item and you can check in up to three bags usually for free, sometimes for a small amount. >> moving on to trips in the family car. you think timing is the key here. pick the right time of the day to get in the car with your kids. >> exactly. you know when your children sleep. feed them, bathe them, put them in their pajamas, they think it's time for bed and hopefully sleep. >> and to avoid hassles on the road, you think it's important to join a roadside assistance program. >> absolutely. it's a begin investment. aaa, all state, gm motors, about $50 a year and they include loads of discounts on hotels, theme park tickets, really good thing to do. >> kate maxwell, good to have you here.

a hamburger does not mean that you are not on a weight management program. she gets up at 5:30 in the morning. she exercises every day. this is not going to hell kind of behavior. >> dr. nancy, if you are going to be on a diet isn't it good to indulge every once in a while? >> i don't think you should be on a diet and that means eat well. if you want aburger and fries and shake one day have it and then go back to normal. everyone get over this. >> what is it that we want to criticize because once she indulges in a burger and shake. >> as somebody who is very fit, and it works out very, very hard and watches what he eats, you need to every once in a while splurge. that's what goes with it. i need that veal parm every once in a while. she's wonderful. she's fantastic. >> very seriously, when you do a weight management, if you have unreasonable expectations that you're going eat carrots and celery every single day you're

not going maintain it. >> that's not normal. >> she has never pretended to not like fast food. she loves fries and every now and then she indulges. >> they a medical journal that suggests in certain obese cases obese children should be taken out of the home and put into foster care. dr. nancy, i'll start with you. what's your opinion? >> this was a commentary written by david ludwig who is one of my go-to guys on children and obesity and he basically raised a question, if parents can be separated from their children for underfeeding them or for abusing them, is there a line in the sand to be drawn when parents are overfeeding their kids and leading to childhood obesity? and in some states, california, iowa, indiana, pennsylvania, new york there is precedent for removing children under the guise of abuse. now, is it a slippery slope? yep. the medical emphasis is all over the cause of that. >> especially putting children

into a foster care system which, star, you put out isn't necessarily a better situation for many kids. >> it's probably one of the worst situations. i actually got to do some interesting research on foster care in america, and one of the worst places you want to be able to put kids right now is the foster care system. we really need to ask the government for intervention on the front end of the problem rather than the back end and get rid of the food deserts in open communities, emphasize a physical education back in the school system. actually teach parents a little bit more about nutritional value. make it easier to get a dollar healthy meal than a dollar fattening meal. >> let's move on to another topic. no kids allowed. a restaurant has decided, it's just outside pittsburgh, to not allow kids under 6 anymore. what do you think about this? >> you what? it's capitalism. there are enough places to take kids. if someone wants to make a business decision and say, look, i want a restaurant -- >> can you legally -- >> you are so politically

♪ ♪ this morning on "today's money," the most important papers to always have on hand, from a living will to retirement accounts and tax returns, do you know where all those documents are and more importantly, do your family members know where to find them in case of god forbid something happens to you. jean chatzky is here with important advice. >> good morning. >> so important for us to get everything in order and a lot of us don't like to think about what will eventually happen to all of us. let's talk about documents that a lot of people know about. a will. >> it's the only document that allows you to name a guardian for minor children. it is a must, plus it tells people where your belongings will go. >> don't delay. power of attorney and we're

talking about not just finances, but also healthcare. >> someone has to make both financial and health care decisions on your behalf. you have to name that person. >> okay. and a living will. >> tells a doctor or hospital if you want life support. again, very important. >> very important, make sure they know what you want done with you. >> exactly. >> okay. you also point out that one thing a lot of people miss out on, the heirs miss out on are life insurance papers that are provided by your employers. >> right. if you have a policy that you've bought through an agent, chances are you'll have one on hand, that's a must. people who have policies through work need to have copies of those as well. >> important to have copies of tax returns for the last three years and make sure your family knows know where to find them. >> because it's a road map to your entire financial life. if someone has a copy of your tax returns they'll follow the bread crumbs. >> you say a letter of instruction at top of the list.

everybody should have one of these. this letter should include everything, a list of all your account, where to find everything, right. >> and a list of the people that need to be contacted. so your lawyer, your accountant, if you have a financial adviser. my stepfather called this a letter of instruction and suggestions because it's not legal, but it's a place where you can tell your family m look, this is how i want my funeral to be handled and this is what i would hope you would do with what i'm giving to you. >> families can squabble. >> absolutely. >> it's a very difficult time and an emotional time for family members as well. also account numbers and pin numbers. you want to make sure your family members know where to find everything and what they are. >> and are able to get into those accounts, right? it's important, not only that they know who is your bank, who is your brokerage firm and where are they located? if it's a safe deposit box, they need to know how to get in on

this, that's yet bank and the account numbers and the pin numbers and passwords are so important. >> proof of ownership. another important factor here and not talking just about the ownership. stocks. >> stocks, cars, if you have cars. if you have certificates of deposit. anything that you own that you want to be leaving, if you can leave a paper trail and just put these items in a folder and create a box, for example, where you're putting all of these things in, tell somebody where they are so that they know how to find them. >> a lot of money gets left behind in retirement accounts. >> right. when we change jobs we have many retirement accounts. you have iras in different places and 401(k)s in different places. if you don't have a list of these accounts and where they're located and that money will go missing and millions and millions of dollars go missing every year. there is a website called missing money.com that if you think perhaps you missed something along the way and you want to track that down, very,

well, good morning everyone. it's 9:26. this morning, a bay area teenager is in critical condition after she was swept out to sea. she was rescued in tennessee cove north of the golden gate bridge late last night. the coast guard tells us the 17-year-old girl and two friends got stuck in heavy current on the point just as the tide was coming in. rescuers say a number of nearby hikers rushed from the cliffs above to help. >> i just saw a lot of people hesitating and not knowing what to do. as soon as she came close enough, i ran into the water, grabbed her and a wave came and hit us.

and i was still holding on to her and i was trying to make sure that me and her did not go in. >> and then rescuers had to dive in after another bystander who swam out to try to save the teens. the three teens were trying to get to a cove when knocked over by a wave. current pushed a boy and girl safely to shore and the third girl airlifted to john muir medical center in walnut creek. >> tonight at 11:00, bay area rivers are favorites for swimming and boating, but this summer, there's a serious danger. why record rainfall could mean more rescues and how you can stay safe tonight at 11:00 on nbc bay area news. a

this morning on today's relationships, love and race. diane fahr is best known for rescue me, and more recently as jill robinson on show "time's" cal foreign indication. but now she's decisioned to write a book about the complexity of hers and other's real life interracial love stories. a true story of love and race and happily ever after. lisa and dave tyler were one of the couples profiled in the book. >> we started dating and we were inseparable. i had never dated a black guy

before and i remember telling my family i have this new boyfriend, he's black. so it was definitely a little different. i had some friends hike, really, you're dating him? why are you dating him? >> reporter: after a seven year courtship, lisa and dave decided to tie the knot. >> my families had some issues with it. they were mostly worried about how it would be for us when we had kids. my mom even helped me plan the wedding. >> at that time, it didn't make me feel bad at and you would bay i knew i loved her. >> reporter: once her family got over the initial shock of a new and unique layer being added to the family tree, the relationship was eventually accepted. >> they got to know dave and in you he's part of our lives. they love dave. >> reporter: and what of the concerns of raising mixed race children? >> my children was my children. >> reporter: we taught them to be open minded and to really

celebrate that they're mixed. >> reporter: and for advice on dealing with this team of address versity, here's what the tylers suggest. >> you want your family to be happy, too. you need to be straightforward with what it is that you want. >> don't let the attitudes of other people drive how you live your life. enjoy it. >> some good advice. and diane, good morning. thanks for being here. >> thank you. >> this is personal for you. your issues a korean american. is that what made you want to write a book? >> it was. it was our sixth date when we sat down and said i want to let you knee i'm supposed to marry a korean woman. and i said you have another girl friend? wow, you're that guy? he had had a private conversation with his parents at about 13 years old, middle school, puberty time, where they said, yes, and you people are equal and deserve an education, we follow the golden rule, but when comes to love, you can't love one of them. and the conversation was shocking only because he hadn't had that argument with them yet.

he was in his 30s and my parents had a similar conversation. there were different people on the list, but i had fought with them through all of my 20s. so here we were and i started to talk to friends to see how pervasive that conversation was. >> so were you planning to write a book at that time or were you just trying to get advice on how to go into the new relationship? >> i didn't want to tell my closest friends this little dirty secret that might be a problem in my relationship, so i started with a wide net. and it was so common that i thought this is the last prejudice that we really aren't talking about yet because it happened at home and nobody wants to shame their parents. >> and did you encounter resistance from your family, did he encount it ter resistance from his? >> i encountered resistance from his family and it was a process. all of the advice really helped and it was a learning curve that was helpful for everything in life. all the advice started off saying it's not fair to the kids. and who will those kids be. so i also interviewed 15 kids

that grew up biracial and everybody was much better off than their grandparents had feared. >> what was some of the advice you received from the couples who had gotten through the hard times? >> the one i like the most not letting other people's headlines be your headlines. if someone else looked at your relationship and only saw it as two different races or religions, that doesn't have to define you. and no one perfectly coined sentence will ever change your family's opinions. you just need to be the example. >> and you guys now have three beautiful children. what will you tell them about acceptance? >> the thing that i also tried to cover in the book is i tell my kids these are american. these are their cultural backgrounds, and so many times we never call ourselves americans until we leave america. so it should just be part of our group culture.

>> what does your husband's family think about you writing this book? >> my husband's family asked if they could have a copy in korean. >> that's a good ending to the story. thank you so much. and once again the book is kissing outside the lines, a true story of love and race and happily ever after. coming up next, easy appetizers. but first, this is "today" on nbc. hello parents, it's going to be a big school year.

your kids are going to climb rope. they're going to have a year long tug war with the ceiling. and by the time they get out of 8th grade, they're going to do it with sweat on their brow and achievement in their hearts. so, this is what they're gonna need: running shoes, t-shirts, tube socks, fruit cups, cheese sticks, energy bars, rope climbing gloves, rope burn ointment, and a jump drive. not sure what that is, but they're gonna be jumpin'. school takes a lot. target has it all.

this morning appetizers in a flash with hot chef michael schwartz. he's author of michael's genuine food. good morning. a beautiful cookbook. >> good to be here. >> we're helping people out with their appetizers and you're making an onion dip? >> snacks.

>> i open a packet. >> that's what most people do. but we'll do it from scratch and it's super simple. with very few ingredients. a couple key tips. >> onion, of course. >> caramelized onions. let them caramelize so that they develop sweetness. always butter and oil and then just cook them. and then just be patient. it takes about 20 minutes. and then what we have is cream cheese that's tempered. that's important. you want to make sure it's tempered and that it's soft and whipped. or else you'll have lumps. and then we'll add sour cream and mayo. >> can you use light cream cheese, as well? >> you could, but here's what i say. you could substitute yogurt for the cream cheese or you could just eat a little bit less of it. keep the fat in and eat a little bit less.

at that point, you just want to -- yeah, might want to turn that off and we'll just fold these in. so super sifrmple and easy. we can mix the chives in or use it as garnish. mixed in for color looks great. salt and pepper is important. >> so we have that going. you'll use real potatoes. >> we like to cut them thick. and so a couple important things. shallow frying. make sure there's not that much oil. >> and how hot? >> about 325. and if you don't have a thermometer, if you dip a spoon in there, do you see the little bubbles around it? you know it's good to go. the other key trick is when you cut the potato, you want to flush them in water so that you watch the starch off. they get crispy.

really important step. >> join us back here because we're going to make an apricot jam which a lot of us don't think to make jam at home. >> the thing about jam, you don't have to can jam. i say make it and eat it. apricots, quartered, you don't have to peel them. they go right in the pot. vanilla bean, just split it down the middle and scrape the pod. doct >> we're
