the construction always has that reading about 50 through that zone. 16-minute drive here and the fog we're talking about with hovering around. skewing our view of the peninsula from the east bay side. a smooth flow but we'll see if that will affect your drive time. you're at the limit. marla, back to you. >> 6 chon 02. the family of a missing nursing student is still hopeful she'll be found safe nearly a month and a half after she was last seen. christie smith is live in hayward where her family raised the reward money to $100,000. christie. >> reporter: yeah, that is an incredible number. good morning. this isn't easy for her family organizing all of these volunteer searches, walking the creeks and wooded areas. this morning they tell me they are going back to the niles canyon area and look for michelle. this is their sixth search. at 7:30 volunteers are going to

start showing up at the community center behind the roll-up door that you see there. that's where volunteers will gather to look for the nursing student last seen from kaiser medical center. her family says they can't give up even though hayward police have classified this as a likely homicide. the fbi has involved along with a private investigator that the family is working with, there are many interviews but no arrests. and what happened to the 26-year-old is still a mystery. the family is going to work with the organization class kids with their search effort. le's brother says he never thought he'd be hooking for his sister. >> the details of the briefing, don't look for her, hook for her cell phone, any kind of clues, be alert. at the same time i keep praying

that god i wish i don't find her out here because this is not the place to find her. >> reporter: volunteers are needed for the search efforts. that is all day today and tomorrow. the address that people are meeting up at is 25350 cypress avenue here in hayward. to participate you have to be 18 years old, at least, with valid i.d., and you want to dress to search with long pants and walking shoes. as you said, that reward money now stands at $100,000 for information that might lead to michelle. reporting live, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you. friends and family will gather in santa rosa to rebound a teen found dead in her room after a sleep-over. a memorial service for takeimi rao will be held at st. eugene's cathedral. her family will hold a private

burial after the service. rao was with friends when they snuck vodka from a cabinet and drank the liquor mixed with soda. detectives are waiting for toxicology results to determine the role alcohol may have played. put a tighter leash on pg&e or we'll see you in court. that's the new message from san francisco to state and federal regulators. city attorney dennis herrera is demanding tight eer scrutiny of pipelines. pg&e operates three major transition lines in san francisco. the notice sent yesterday is the first step of potential lawsuit that would force california and the feds to enforce pipe line safety laws. >> bryan stow's condition improves at san francisco general hospital, support continues to pour in for the giants fan beaten after a game outside dodger stadium. another fund-raiser is being held later today. the proceeds will go to the stow family to help cover his medical

fired. tucker was shot in the head while driving along interstate 80 back in january of 2010. the bass player was on the way to band practice. 6:07. astronauts aboard the "atlantis" are spending the morning doing trouble shooting after another one of the computers went down. on sunday the same thing happened as the shuttle linked up with the international space station. "atlantis" returns to earth next week after two weeks in space. when it does it ends a storied 30 years of the shuttle program. bob redell joins us live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. we're waiting for the four astronauts on the space shuttle along with the six others on the space station, to participate in a news conference on the screen behind me. that should take place in about 20 minutes. the computer malfunction has

since been taken care of. jack boyd here has been with nasa since 1947. you were here for gemini, apollo, the space shuttle program. what do you think the legacy is going to be? >> the legacy is it taught us how to live in space. pure and simple. to live in zero gravity for a while, to be able and concern ourselves about what you do the next day up there and in addition to that we've done many, many biological experiments to help us learn how to live in space. >> now that the shuttle program is ending, 1 they 5th mission scheduled to land on thursday. the program will be shut down. then you take into consideration you have private companies going out. what do you think the role of nasa is going to be? >> nasa's going to be have the

real of beyond low earth orbit. nasa will take the difficult task of developing a technology, how to live further out in space, to go beyond and exmore the solar system. it may take us decades but -- >> sad to see the program go but you feel it's time? time's right? >> it's always sad to see something good as it was with apollo. but we also developed new things, new ideas and that's what's going to keep driving us forward. the young people of this country like the idea of exploring, i think. it gets them involved and wanting to go into math and science. that is an torrent element of what nasa has done. congratulations on 64 years. you can go now. pretty funny. he has to run. waiting for this news conference to standard.

on board one of the ten astronauts is rex, a bay area native, born in redwood city. calls san carlos his home. >> you can imagine how many live interviews jack has done in 64 years. am i done yet? >> i'm out of here. who are you? >> thank you. 6:10. oakland's city maintenance crews could see cuts over the next couple of weeks, part of the fallout of the new budget. 56 city employees will be laid off because of budget cuts. union leaders tell the oakland tribune the deepest impacts in the city. the city's police department will get fewer officers next year. the department's budget is for 636 this year, and 588 next year. elected officials receive 15% pay cut as well. and then starting in july of 2012, the fire department will close, two fire houses per day.

6:10. time to look at the weekend forecast. christina loren, looking close to perfect. >> we're looking really good. high pressure is going to start to warm us up. if you are waiting for the warmth, i have a lot of complaints on my facebook page, where has summer gone. it will be back as we head through next week. might come in quicker than you like. might want to enjoy these cool conditions. onshore flow, this area of low pressure hasn't moved much over 24 hours, it's going to stay put all the way throughout the weekend. that will drive in that on shore flow. high pressure is building in behind it. for us that means we're going to see less fog as we start out next week. it will be more and more clear. then np will bring our temps up to the triple-digit territory at the end of next week. it's going to get hot very quickly. still good visibility along the peninsula from san francisco up

you guys feel our pain. you know what it's going to be like for us. some people are comparing this to the 1984 olympics when they called that carmageddon as well. they had so many closures. it was not big of an event. and people are wondering is this also a non-event. have we prepared enough for this that we don't have to worry about it. remains to be seen. 7:00 tonight they start closing the on and off ramps between the 101 and the 10 freeway. a 10-mile stretch. at 10 lock the lane closures start, then by midnight it starts to be closed completely for the duration. 53 hours construction workers will be working on the bridge, the overpass. cutting it in half and taking chunks, one side, cutting it off and rebuilding it. making it wider. these giant chunks are going to fall. they are going to have a 4 to 6-foot padded area of sand so these chunks fall it wond damage

the freeway. the plan is have it reopened by 5:00 a.m. on monday. then all of the on and off ramps open so the morning rush isn't affected too badly. are they going to be able to do it? the contractors saying they might be able to get done quicker and open sooner. doesn't know for sure. but if they are not ready, if they don't have it ready 5:00 a.m. on monday for every hour we have to wait for that they are going to be fined $72,000. of course it behooves them to have this open and all of us including you just in case this gets to be so bad that the traffic is backed up up there. can you believe that. >> no, that would be -- i would hope not. >> it would be epic. >> have you gotten a sense from the people are they upset about this or prepared for it? >> reporter: the ones you ask close to the 405 arlittle concerned. the business owners are very concerned. but if you talk to people who

maybe noon it will push back. we're looking for a really nice day today. for all counties in the bay area this morning, thads good news we see the high pressure days. and the sinking air, that's when we get the air quality alerts. we haven't had that many because we had these abnormal patterns. right now running 10 to 15 degrees below our seasonal averages. typically end up this time of year. it's going to last throughout the weekend, at theent of next week temps drim back up to averages and beyond. the seven-day is moments away. a much cooler start here in santa rosa and novato. 46 in novato. you might need a jacket. 48 in santa ro ta. we'll be warm, 76 degrees, that's the forecasted high in napa, 75%. waking up in oak hand, 65 for you today. and 71 in san jose.

we're looking at livermore as well. we're seeing slowdown for 580 in the westbound direction. shaping up again coming out of the altamont pass. 19 minutes speeds in general' especially into livermore, in the 40s, 45 area. the averages have come down. no big surprise. that's a nice flow. we'll get awe live look and see how things are shaping up. across the san mateo bridge, a good drive heading westbound. the volume picking up and slowing off the transition from 880 and of course the fog showing the effects we can make out, the visibility for 101 and 280 and the speeds fine for now. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:26. the astronauts, this is cool, the astronauts on board the international space station, the space shuttle "atlantis" are in the middle of a press conference. let's listen in to them. here is a look at them.

>> reporter: good morning to you. that's an incredible number. you know, also the family has distributed countless flyers, there is a website up. today they are starting their sixth search with volunteers coming to a community center behind the roll-up door you see for training on howsearch and what to look for. it's six weeks since michelle disappeared, last seen leaving kaiser medical center in hayward during a break from an evening shift. police have classified the case as a homicide but the family is pushing forward. they don't know where she is or what happened. they hired a private investigator and suffered through the uncertainty of not knowing. >> it's hard. it could have been -- the scenario we play through that we try not to but -- everyone of

at the spot where the woman's body was found yesterday morning on ivanhoe road. police say the woman's sbod too badly burned to know who she is. all they know she appears to be hispanic in her 20s. >> any one who has information to call the police department. you may have seen something that looked out of the ordinary around that time this morning. so sometimes very small tips lead to the big arrest. police say the woman was like hi killed somewhere else and then dumped in the neighborhood during the early morning hours. the suspect probably chose that neighborhood because it's clark during those hours. new cameras will be installed in the hopes of catching crooks. about 30 cameras will be installed inside and outside of businesses in the fruitvale neighborhood including the otea's restaurant where robbers

killed owner jesus. 6:34. police in marin city are investigating at least six robberies and one month all near the same bus stop. the latest happened in the middle of the day tuesday on turner's drive when three men wearing hoodies robbed an ice cream truck driver at gunpoint. most of the other muggies reported since june 16 happened at night. they are hooking at improving lighting at the bus house to make it safer. >> the wine expert accused of stealing a picasso from the san francisco gallery is linked to a stolen art stash on the east coast. new york police say they found seven pricey pieces of art at mark lugo's apartment including another picasso.

they say they got the search warrant after hearing lugo on a jail house phone asking a woman to help him clear art from his home. experts are concerned that hugo is part of a wring of art heaves. >> seems it would be unusual for him unless he knows that a drawing by picasso, a water color or drawing by leget that these would be worth stealing. >> he was caught on surveillance tape talking down the street. lugo is spchted of stealing expensive wine from a store in new jersey. >> you'll now have access to free wi-fi if you catch the light rail in the south bay. service is up and running after a week of testing. vta says it's the first mass transit agency in the world to

>> new rules take effect next month that will force airlines to pay you if they lose your luggage. but passengers say there are some loopholes they don't like.

"today in the bay's" kristen dahlgren has all of the information for us. >> good morning. here's the problem for a lot of passengers. the baggage has to be lost. it can't just be delayed. so, a lot of people annoyed that they have to pay fees in the first place under the new rules, the airline only needs to reimburse passenger they never get their luggage. if it gets to you a day late, two days late, the airline not required to reimburse you. so a lot of passengers saying they don't go far enough. the air transport association says if airlines had to pay back the fee for every time a bag was delayed they would have to start charging more. there are a few other protections under the new rules that require the airlines to disclose new changes to their baggage fees for three months before they go into effect. also on the website when you're booking they have to make you aware and disclose what baggage

fees would be. a few protection there is but for a lot of passengers not going far enough. >> i can understand that. i never had my luggage completely lost. it has been diverted, went to the wrong airport. in your case have you experienced that? >> i never had it completely lost either. and the airlines say it's only about 1% of bags that are actually lost but i definitely had mine not get to me for a few days. that's pretty annoying. >> it was on christmas for me. >> bah, humbug. >> 6:44. a change in curriculum headed to california classrooms. the history of the gay community meaning gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders will be included in lesson plans. the governor signed the bill making california the first state in the country requiring it be covered in school. the bill will teach students to

be more accepting of gays and lesbians, opponents argue it's imposing homosexuality on families not comfortable with that lifestyle. >> you can catch a glimpse at moon bows at yosemite national park. the full moon should be bright enough to shine through the spray from the water falls, this is spectacular. the lack of artificial light in yosemite makes it the ideal place to watch moon bows. a filmmaker made this for the yosemite conservancy. he says usually about 200 people turn out to see the moon bows, most leave the park at sunset, not realizing what the night has to offer. 6:45. christina, i'm sure you're familiar with the moon bow term. i had never heard of that. >> have you heard after blue moon? i bet you have. good morning to you. pretty cool stuff. we've got other meteorological

phenomenon happening. fog developing as we speak. we had a picture of the golden gate bridge about an hour ago, now that marine push all the way inland. you're going to find mostly cloudy start but not as hong as yesterday. that's good news if you are looking for warmer weather. we have warmer days ahead. we'll see a warm-up through your weekend. temperatures start to sky rocket toward the end of next week under a strong ridge of high pressure setting up in the eastern pacific. you can see where it's taking the storm track as we head throughout the next couple of days this will continue to inch toward us and nudge that trough of low pressure out of the way. so a warm-up on the way. if you are missing the 90s that we see this time of year, the upper 80s, in places like livermore, they'll be back at the end of next week. you'll get your summer. 54 in san mateo, we're headed to about 60 at noon in the city with a really comfortable mix of sun and clouds. mild conditions. when the highs check in, breezy,

hello parents, it's going to be your kids are going to climb rope. they're going to have a year long tug war with the ceiling. and by the time they get out of 8th grade, they're going to do it with sweat on their brow and achievement in their hearts. so, this is what they're gonna need: running shoes, t-shirts, tube socks, fruit cups, cheese sticks, energy bars, rope climbing gloves, rope burn ointment, and a jump drive. not sure what that is, but they're gonna be jumpin'. school takes a lot. target has it all.
