street. that victim is in critical condition this morning. the other happened just before 11:00 last night. a second man is in the hospital with undisclosed injuries. a 22-yr-old woman was shot on the usually quiet piedmont avenue. witnesses say four men were seen running into a residential neighborhood in monte vista avenue. two people were shot in jack london square. both victims remain in the hospital. outside the silver dollar hotel, one man was shot just after 10:00 last night. police are releasing few details in that shooting, but they say the investigation continues. and finally, a shooting on sun kist drive about 1:00 this morning near interstate 580, not

far from mills college. the victim is in the hospital. no suspect in custody. police say they can't yet tell whether any of this violence is connected. to san francisco now, where an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition at san francisco general hospital after she was shot in the chest last night in the western addition. it happened on the 1100 block of laguna street about 11:15 last night. bullet casings led them to the girl's apartment. the girl's snaers are life-threatening. witnesses say it was a group of african-american boys, perhaps teenagers. officers detained several boys for questioning. there have been no arrests yesterday. also in san francisco this morning, a man is in jail accused of stabbing two people last night. police say they responded to a call in the richmond neighborhood where an argument turned into a fist fight. police say one man stabbed two

people. both victims are at san francisco general hospital with nonlife threatping injuries. the suspect was arrest and is in jail. after four frustrating months, los angeles police say they now have the right people in custody. marvin norwood, louis sanchez and doreen sanchez, all neighbors from the southern california city of rialto. kimberly terry spoke exclusively with stow's family who revealed new details about this recovery. but we also begin with george in the latest in the arrest and what else we learned about the ongoing investigation. >> reporter: charlie beck and mayor are convinced this time they have made the right arrests. >> every single one of us wanted to do everything we can to bring these people to justice, and i believe that that's why we're here today, to say the process worked. >> reporter: three people have been arrested, two have been

charged in the beating of giants fan bryan stow. 30-year-old marvin norwood and 29-year-old louie sanchez have been charged with felony mayhem, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and battery. it also shows sanchez charged with attacking two other giants fans on opening night. as the focus of the investigation moves towards the new suspects, the lapd announced giovanni ramirez had nothing to do with the beating and was no longer a suspect? >> in this case it took a long amount of time to establish information that exonerated mr. ramirez. but that information led us to the rest of these three individuals and have resulted in criminal filings. >> reporter: norwood and sanchez are neighbors in rialto, a city east of los angeles, in san bernardino county. neighbors described the two men as family men, reliable, and hard working. >> he's a really good friend. and me, myself, i can't believe he did it.

i don't -- i totally have that doubt that he didn't do it. >> reporter: but their rap sheets tell a different story. both men with violent pasts, including domestic violence convictions. >> that's what this is about. >> reporter: the lapd has faced tough questions over the handling of this indication, and its credibility has come under fire. >> this is about character. this is about the character of this police department, and our ability even when it reflects badly on us, to do the right thing. and that's ha we did in this case. >> louie sanchez's sister doreen was also arrested but she has not yet been charged. next up, their arraignment in los angeles court monday morning. the criminal investigation, what is the only significant development this weekend, bryan stow himself is making headlines for all of the right reasons. stow's family spoke exclusively with us, saying this is the happiest that they've been in

months. as "today in the bay's" kimberly terry reports, this has little to do with the criminal case, rather it has to do with his recovery. >> he is doing awesome. >> reporter: bryan stow's sister said it's been a roller coaster of emotions watching her brother recover from a brutal attack. they thought there might be some setbacks after he underwent surgery monday for fluid buildup in his head that caused a seizure. >> suddenly yesterday he mouthed his last name to the nurses. and kind of gave them a thumbs up. so when we heard that, we just couldn't get to the hospital fast enough. >> reporter: and today she said bryan said good-bye to his cousin after a visit and responded to his two children. >> he didn't mouth anything to them, but just reaching out to them was all they needed. >> reporter: even the mood at the hospital seems to have changed. >> they're scratching their heads. he's been a very unique patient.

>> reporter: so his family said doctors are impressed with his progress, including the one who originally tended to stow in los angeles after the attack. >> he is just amazed. he's going to be in research books because he was such a complicated case for everybody. and there were complications every step of the way. didn't know what was going to happen. so doctors just said, this made his whole day. >> reporter: the news is making giants fans happy. >> what a glimmer of hope for the entire family. >> i've been following the story closely actually. so it's good to see him doing better. glad to hear that. >> reporter: many fans are parents themselves and say it's great to hear him responding to his children. >> inspiration by any kind of movement is amazing, you know? i just would love to see the look in his children's eyes. >> being a parent myself, just to hear that, just to know he's

able to do that with his own kids, almost brings a tear to my eye. >> reporter: his family says they're grateful for all the well wishes. they read all the messages on bryan's facebook page, and a website used to update his progress. they take some of those messages with them when they go to the hospital room and read them to stow. in san francisco, kimberly terry, nbc, bay area news. >> it's not been confirmed who tipped off l.a. police, but whoever did stands to collect a big chunk of money if those suspects are convicted. $225,000 is the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction. norwood, sanchez and doreen must plead guilty to felony charges in the case. while bryan stow continues to progress, a concert will be held in his honor today. caribbean artist kefen little will perform.

taking a live look this morning, a beautiful start to the day on alameda. looking at the "u.s.s. hornet." we'll show you what's planned there to celebrate a historical moment. president obama begins the day trying to figure out a way to make progress op the debt crisis. house speaker john boehner walked out on talks with the president. the president asked boehner to return today to resume talks, but also asked senate majority leader har i reid and mitch mcconnell and nancy pelosi to be at the table as well. this follows boehner's rejection yesterday of one-on-one talks with the president. each blames the other for the breakdown in talks. washington has less than two

weeks before the august 27d deadline to come up with a plan to cut deficits and raise the debt ceiling or risk seeing the nation default on its financial obligations for the first time ever. a partial shutdown of the faa is now in effect after congress missed the deadline to extend the operating authority. experts say this should not affect your trip, because air traffic controllers, safety inspectors and other security personnel remain on the job. so far lawmakers have failed to iron out differences between the house and senate versions of the funding bill for the faa. airlines don't have the authority to collect federal taxes on tickets, so if you book now, you could save about $60 on a $300 flight. it was a california adventure for sure, but probably not the one people expected. this is california screaming at a ride in anaheim. the problem, riders were left hanging. firefighters had to remove 23

50s. hayward, 60 degrees. misty skies and the low cloud cover around san francisco. 55 in san jose and santa cruz. 58 currently in fairfield. we have a healthy sea breeze which will keep our north bay temperatures in the 70s. we've got southwest winds at 23, we should still reach the 80s inland. coming up tonight, the giants taking on the brewers. we should see temperatures around first pitchtime in the low 60s. 50s as the game goes on later tonight. good air quality today. thanks to the healthy sea preez which keeps the air well mixed. prevents any ground-level lows from being a problem today. we've got low clouds around the bay area, but no real storm systems. the storm track off to the north. but high pressure, though, has been kind of held in check by the strong sea breeze. we have not seen a high ridge of pressure as we start the weekend. clouds inland this morning. in the afternoon they'll retreat

back to the coast. the process will repeat once again tomorrow morning. this is the typical summer pattern. 70s and 80s inland. through your afternoon, we'll see warm temperatures out towards morgan hill, livermore and fairfield. i think we might see temperatures getting close to 90, but mostly out toward stockton and sacramento today. 84 san jose. los gatos, areas south of san jose, some of the warmer locations. san francisco, kind of cool, 65 degrees. there you see the 70s around the north bay valleys. as you head further north, pretty toasty once you get away from that marine area. our seven-day forecast looks pretty comfortable, especially compared to the rest of the country. briefly cooler early next week. but i think thursday and friday, there's a possibility we could see 100-degree temperatures possibly coming back to the tri-valley spots. we'll see. so far this summer has been pretty mild around the bay area. >> our plants certainly

appreciate it. thanks, rob. angel island is often called the ellis island of the west. today some of the first immigrants to the island will celebrate that history. family members will place a plaque in dedication to the ancestors. the dedication will be today from 11:00 this morning until noon. the "u.s.s. hornet" will celebrate its race to the moon. 42 years ago the apollo 11 spacecraft made its flashdown in the pacific ocean. the "uss hornet" roefrd it from the water. an exhibit will feature the space suits and equipment used by the astronauts. in san francisco, the hood games will ramp up celebrating skateboarding. artistic designer founded the games six years ago. from 10:00 this morning to 9:00 p.m. tonight, they'll feature

skateboarding demonstrations by world renowned skate pros and hip-hop performances for free as well. in the south bay, it is the end of an era. no more disco music, line dances or roller skates for a rink that's been around for decades. nbc bay area's scott budman takes us for a final spin around the floor. >> reporter: one last birthday party, one last chance to lace them up, and roll away. after three decades in milpitas, 25 with this hardwood floor, cal skate is getting ready to close its doors, saying good-bye to generations of roller skaters. >> it's wonderful. i've been here, since i was a little kid. and to be now with my children here in cal skate, skating with them, it's wonderful. i hate to see it go. >> certainly our memories are going to keep going. >> reporter: chris' family has run the rink since the

a nice start to the day. the celebration there for later this afternoon. we want to get a look at our forecast. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez, along with meteorologist, rob mayeda. maybe a little hot? >> a little something for everybody. we've got the low clouds, 56 degrees in oakland. you saw the hornet there looking with gray skies around the east bay. san francisco, mist at 55 degrees. san jose, we'll call it mostly cloudy. though there's a few sunny breaks around the south bay right now. southeast wind at 12. a little bit of a gloomy start this morning. around lunchtime, we'll get 70s to near 80s topping out to mid to upper 80s around pleasantton and livermore. 65 san francisco. 70 in oakland. weather for all types of weather fans around the bay area today. but the seven-day is hinting perhaps at some heat issues for parts of the bay area. we'll talk more about that coming up in the full forecast in a fu minutes.

10:00 last night. the investigation continues. finally, one man is in the hospital after he was shot on sunkist drive near interstate 580 not far from mills college. it happened just after 1:00 this morning. no suspects in custody yet. early last night, there were shootings on 43rd street and 46th street. they can't tell whether any of they was incidents are relate. to san francisco now and the condition on the 11-year-old girl who was shot in the chest in san francisco last night. she remains in critical condition at san francisco general hospital this morning. it happened in the 1100 block of laguna street, about 11:15 last night. that's in the city's western addition. police say they found bullet casings in the neighborhood. one bullet went through the wall of an apartment building. police say the girl is now suffering from life-threatening injuries from that bullet. witnesses say the suspects were described as a group of african-american boys. several officers detained suspects for questioning. however, no arrests just yet.

now to the latest in the tragedy in norway where authorities say the death toll from the shooting spree at a youth camp could still rise. police are searching the waters around the island where the attack took place for more victims. frightened teenagers at the summer camp for kids learning about politics say they plunged into the water or they played dead to avoid the gunman. police say the assault may have lasted 30 minutes before a s.w.a.t. team arrived. >> we saw them sitting in the cabin and they heard a shot. we asked if maybe this was -- if something exploded. and then we heard people jump in the water. >> an explosion outside the prime minister's office in oslo also killed at least seven people. a norwegian man was reported with right-wing views is a suspect in both of those

attacks. they identified him as 32-year-old an drers braiviek. police are still searching his apartment in oslo this morning. more details about the suspects in the bryan stow beating case. the district attorney's office charged louie sanchez and marvin norwood with assault and battery in the attack that left bryan stow with brain damage. police arrested sanchez and norwood in the southern california city of re al to yesterday. while neighbors described both of those men as family men, police say each has a rap sheet indicating violent pasts, including domestic violence convictions. the new arrests led the lapd to exonerate initial suspect giovanni ramirez. his arrest led the lapd to defend its reputation. >> this is about character. this is about the character of this police department and our ability, even when it reflects badly on us, to do the right thing. and that's what we did in this case. >> there's a third suspect in this case.

doreen sanchez was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact to a felony. she has not been charged. a three-alarm fire that devastated a condo complex in rossmoor could have been worse. it raged out of control in the walnut creek retirement community. the fire spread through an eight-unit complex very fast. you can see the condos are burned down to the studs. a man visiting his great-aunt took some cell phone video and he heard a woman calling for help before he saw smoke and huge flames. he went back in with a fire ex tinger. jonathan caldwell said he knew some of the folks there were bed ridden or hard of hearing so he tried to make several passes. at one door he found a woman in a wheelchair needing help getting out. >> we went to evacuate this one lady, and she said, i can't, my mom's in a wheelchair.

no problem, you get out, we'll get your mom. we were able to get her into her chair. i grabbed a back, he grabbed the front. and they air lifted her out. >> 35 firefighters from the contra costa department kept the fire from spreading to trees and neighboring units as well. a letter carrier really delivered this week. we're not just talking about the mail. denny managed to call 911, put out a kitchen fire and keep it from spreading to other people living in a townhouse complex. a babysitter and two children met him outside the front door as the fire broke out. he quickly grabbed a garden hose but it was too short, so he found a second hose, linked them together and crouched on the floor to spray the fire and avoid getting burned. once it was over, he finished his route, just like any other day. nice. an east bay congressman wants to hear from you this morning. pete stark will hold two town

tomorrow, all the low clouds inland and clearing to the coast for the afternoon. not much change in our weather. temperatures will be cooling a little bit as we head into early next week. southern california, we'll see low clouds around san diego. palm springs, 75 degrees. sacramento, mid-90s today. and 74 around south lake tahoe. around the bay area, we will see temperatures ranging from the 80s. san jose southward, pretty comfortable 70s for oakland. 60s around san francisco. so cool for the peninsula and coastline. north bay temperatures ranging from the 70s southward. but 90s as you get away from the marine influence, getting up to lake port. your microclimates around the bay area. take your pick. but next week, thursday and friday, we could see mid to upper 90s around the bay area. so comfortably cool right now. everyone around the rest of the country i think is jealous of the weather here in the bay

>> reporter: thousands dealt with the blazing temperatures by hitting the jersey shore. the water was refreshing, but the sand was blistering. >> it's brutal. heat is brutal. >> reporter: millions suffered with brutal heat friday from sterling, virginia, all the way to boston. portland, maine, hit 100 degrees for the first time since 1975. east coast residents should expect at least one more day of sweltering heat before much-needed relief. a cold front drops down from the north, and with that, we are going to see cooler air move into place. and as it does, by early next week, we're going to see temperatures back down closer to average. >> reporter: but even with average temperatures, the dog days of summer will continue. curt gregory, nbc news. most of the u.s. is sweltering. an eastern pennsylvania man is ready for snow. take a look at what he is doing with his free time. he said work is a little slow

right now. he's ushering in the change with decorations. he's hoping this will work, that bringing in christmas in july will bring around the cooler temperatures. weekend forecasters are saying it could drop down to the mid-80s next week. a group in austin, texas, has found a different way to keep cool. paddle board yoga. we've seen it in the bay area already. but here's how they do it in texas. as the sun comes up over the city, a small group is heading out on paddle boards on lady bird lake. >> the paddle boards have been blowing up everywhere really. >> reporter: instead of paddling down the river, a group has decided to change it up a bit. >> a straight spine here. halfway forward, keep your spine straight. >> reporter: yes, you're seeing yoga on a paddle board. >> the board looks like a yoga mat. and it adds an extra challenge to the practice.

if instead of buying a house you're looking to rent, be prepared to pay more. new research shows rents are going up in the bay area especially in the silicon valley. a research company said the average rent is nearly #$,800. the study shows that's an increase of almost 8% compared to last year. a report from san jose where rents could be as high as some home mortgage payments. >> we're trying to hang on. we're thinking about taking off. >> reporter: angelo is like many other south bay renters who's finding himself priced out of the rental market. the latest figure is the real facts company shows rents are rising again, especially if the silicon valley. just ask this south bay resident. >> 1,000 square feet.

it's a little over $2,000. >> a drop in the bucket? >> no. >> all that is compounded by the fact there's not been a significant amount of new rental housing built in the past couple of years. >> reporter: joshua howard is ceo of the california apartment association south bay headquarters. he thinks the rise in rental prices is actually a good thing. >> i think that we are seeing the economy turn around, and this is a sign that the bay area economy is beginning to improve. >> reporter: the research was done on complexes with 50 or more units, like this one. there are still duplexes in san jose with rents as low as $700 per month. but those come without a pool or a gym. asaro said he may not be around to see how high the rents will go by this time next year. >> they're increasing them so rapidly, people are having to move out of the silicon valley. >> reporter: "today in the bay." we still have more ahead, includingur g osst from pets in need.
