pavilion, a nice start to monday, july 25th. this is "today in the bay." >> good monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we've got a really nice looking forecast for today, even tomorrow and wednesday before it starts to get pretty hot around here. onshore flow will provide a significant round of fog this morning, we'll let you know where it's expected to be the densest and what time it's expected to settle into the bay area. there is a key time mike and i know it well, let's check your drive with mike. >> unfortunately right now, even though the drivers are okay, our view of the bridge is not so i have to use the maps to show you what we're talking about for the newest incident, the approach to the bay bridge. moving smoothly. and driving on those approaches is not a problem. across the bridge a new incident, an accident and debris

near treasure island. it should be cleared quickly but i have my eyes on this and a full freeway closure. that coming up. >> thank you very much. two southern california men will have their day in court today answering to charges that they beat giants fan bryan stow. this morning we're learning more about the investigation that led to that arrest. marla tellez joins us live outside san francisco general hospital where stow is undergoing treatment. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. it's almost been four months since bryan stow was nearly beaten to death. it's two months that he has been here at sf general, recovering. today, 29-year-old louie sanchez and 30-year-old marvin norwood, will be arraigned in los angeles superior court. the two were arrested thursday and face felony charges of mayhem, assault and battery. according to the "l.a. times," the men live in the same neighborhood in rialto, that's

in san bernardino county, about 60 miles east of los angeles. on friday, l.a. police chief charlie beck announced the first suspect they arrested in may had nothing to do with the beating. turns out as the case against 31-year-old giovanni ramirez began to unravel detectives began digging. they gathered ticket sales receipt from the area that stow sat in during the march 31st game. it's the same spot where people reported seeing a pair of aggressive fans. police say those receipts led them to sanchez and norwood who matched the descriptions given to police from witnesses. the two are said to be good friends, both are fathers, and both have criminal histories that include domestic violence charges. that's according to court records. they are being head on $500,000 bail. a third person was also arrested in this case, 31-year-old dorene sanchez, she is said to be the

sister of suspect louie sanchez. she was picked up on friday as well, officials believe she was driving the getaway car on march 31. she has since been released on bail. in the meantime, bryan stow remains here at sf general still in serious condition. i'd like to point out that i had the opportunity to go to the giants game friday night and i saw several fans there with nicely printed tee shirts made up in support of bryan stow, that simply read "stow fan." so this case has touched the bay area and fans have not forgotten about bryan stow though it's been almost four months. >> definitely no. thank you very much. it is 5:03 now. the man accused of murdering a san jose woman and dumping her body in a sunnyvale neighborhood is expected in court. 47-year-old man is expected to enter a plea. court documents in the case show he confessed to killing the

46-year-old maria orosco. her body was found in the front yard of a home on june 5. police say in addition to the confession they have physical evidence that link the man to the crime. >> a mother of four is set up for trial accused of having sex with a 16-year-old boy. sarah cole is charged with three felon counts of unlawful sex. the court documents say cole prescribed the boy with marijuana, cigarettes and food. the boy's parents got police involved after sees disturbing text messages on his phone allegedly from cole. one man is dead and another injured during a fatal shooting in east palo alto, it comes as the community is dealing with a surge in violent crime. christie smith is live in east palo alto. she joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this is still a very active

scene, the street is blocked off in east palo alto, police are still here gathering evidence from an all too familiar scene, a shooting. someone opened fire on two men. that's on the far side of the building last night. the victims just 18 and 19 years old. one died at the scene, the other taken to a hospital and expected to be okay. i spoke with police, they tell me they have no solid suspect information. this is just the latest in a series of troubling violence in east palo alto. now the sixth homicide of the year. police have also announced a summer violence reduction program targeting crime hot spots, gangs and drugs. what's behind this latest shooting and the spike going on police have their suspicions but they can't say for sure. >> at this point in the investigation we're still trying to determine that. we're trying to determine what the motive is. we don't know that it's gang

related but we don't know that it's not. >> reporter: the double shooting overnight comes at the same time when police plan to hold a media briefing later this morning to talk about three suspects or what they are now saying are persons of interest, in two recent killings in the city of a 19-year-old woman and 26-year-old man. one of those persons of interest is in custody already on an unrelated charge. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, christie. police in east palo alto also think they know who is responsible for two recent murders in the city. officers will announce three suspects today in the death of 26-year-old hugo chavez and catherine fisher seen here. both were killed within a week of each other. police believe the three may be connected to crimes in colorado. >> for more than two decades he was the well known face and voice for san francisco

international airport. ron wilson, the former chief spokesperson for sfo, died over the weekend after battling cancer. he would have been 73 this friday. he worked at sfo starting as surveyor's assistant on a runway project in 1959. eventually he became chief spokesperson in 1982, dealing with everything from the emergency landings to heightened security following 9/11. a very nice man. 5:07. several hundred people in berkeley are without power this morning, pg&e says a milar balloon hit power lines yesterday. nearly 2,000 were without power. service is back on for all but about 600 people right now. luckily the weather was cooperating, have some open windows, fresh air hopefully coming in. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren with a look at the forecast. >> good morning to you. we're going to see a really nice day yet again, you'll be able to open up the windows even in the

heat of the day, temperatures climbing into the 70s. in many spots across the bay area. and right now we're looking pretty good. 10 miles of visibility from san francisco to oakland, the north bay you're starting to lose your visibility. down to about six miles in santa rosa. so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. don't want to go racing out the door in conditions like this. mostly cloudy start will make way to a mostly sunny afternoon, comfortable conditions later on today. lots of sunshine. and then temps mild all the way through the first part of of this week. 55 in novato and santa ro sue. 54 in san mateo. and 61 in sunnyvale. we're on the way to about 70 degrees later on today in oakland, 82 los gatos and 82 degrees in redwood city. the last portion of this week looks different from what we expect for the first part. things start to change after wednesday. stay tuned. that seven-day outlook is moments away. let's get you out the door with mike. >> even if you are heading out the front door now and heading toward the bay bridge, we should

have this accident cleared by the time you get there. this is the upper deck. there was a lane blocked. chp is helping this person off treasure island or thereabouts. but we have debris at the scene. no major slowing around the maze. it is a smooth drive but watch for flashing lights. i'll watch for any closures but so far nothing big going on there. south bay we have this big closure for 101, all of this red now showing up. but that's good news because that means the crews have cleared so both directions now clear, northbound cleared a while ago, southbound side reopened to just a few and we have a smooth flow for 101. down through gilroy, 152 a lot of folks head through, now there is a major accident. it's closed at bloomfield. sounds like a bus went off the road and hit a verizon pole. no major injuries. both directions are closed for 152 and that sounds like a couple of hours.

>> welcome back everyone. this is a live look from oslo, norway, where a judge is meeting with the gunman that shot so many people over this last weekend that we saw on friday. he's meeting behind closed doors with the suspect this morning, we're closely monitoring this case for you. as is the rest of the world. tragedy. tragedy. 5:13ment an inside job, that's what investigators call the largest high tech computer chip heist in bay area history.

two of the nine men arrested for the february heist of $37 million of computer chips worked at unigen. pierre ramos and leonardo abriam joined the company shortly before the heist. a spokesman says that the two showed up for work the day after the heist. the two along with the other defendants will appear in court on wednesday to face charges. if convicted each could face life in prison. investigators are still looking for six other people connected to the crime. >> washington lawmakers will continue their debt negotiations this morning. they have just over a week to come up with a deal and things really not looking very good. the fact that negotiations are coming down to the wire have investors skittish, certainly affecting the markets as well. we turn to nicole lapin. good morning.

>> very good morning to you, laura. things aren't looking that great but not as bad as i was expecting. futures are lower but we've come off the lows in the overnight trading as investors monitor what's going on in washington over whether congress will reach a deal. there are just eight days until treasury says the u.s. will run out of cash to pay its bills, setting up a possible default on our national debt and a downgrade of our top credit rating. so on that asian markets were off across the board. there are a lot of red arrows in european trade this morning but to recap some of the action on friday the dow fell 43 points, 12,681 is where we close. the composite rose to 2858. we could be giving back some of those gains today as is possibly a bumpy day on wall street. also making headlines the price of the big staples at your table have gone up nearly 5% in the past year, that's according to the food at home component of the monthly consumer price

index, the biggest increase since 2004 as grocers continue to pass more higher costs of items like corn, rice, sugar and oats to consumers. prices of those are up more than 60% over the past 12 months. somebody may be looking to adopt the e-trade baby. looking at the possibilities of buying the rival discount broker, the company's board is meeting tomorrow to discuss the possibility. last week e-trade's largest shareholder pressed the company to pursue a sale. e-trade's market value $4.5 billion. those are the latest headlines. back to you. >> maybe adoption taking place. thank you. 5:16. one bay area city could see their trash bills increase by 5 bucks a m. palo alto leaders will vote. they say they need the hike to off seat shortfall in the city's refuge fund. the plan also calls for a

we'll leave it up to him coming up in a bit. san francisco's giants race starting to live up to its name. a month before the event and it's sold out. nearly 10,000 runners are registered for the august 27th race. it feature as half marathon, a 10-k and 5-k. all three races end up at at&t park. annual event is a fund-raiser for project open hands which provides meals to senior citizens and those homebound due to serious illness. though the event is sold out, runners who can fundraise $500 can still take part. maybe mike will start with a 5-k, work our way up. >> k like kilometers? okay. see if i can make it. >> raise that money. >> if you get that money we'll do that. traveling into the city on the upper deck, the accident there still reported on our system.

no slowing over the last 20 minutes but it's still there as you pass by treasure island. no major disturbance to the flow of traffic through the maze. but we did have this. the 61, that's reported on our sensor at golden gate field after the merge. but just before you got there, westbound 80 was showing a good slowdown, for the last few minutes so i'll watch that. everything is connected for the morning commute especially for that side of the bay. the carquinez bridge, reports of a pedestrian walking across the bridge so chp might have to head out with flashing lights to help them. 880 moving past the coliseum. a live look shows you a smooth flow and volume holding but i showed you the san mateo bridge, it looks like pretty good request volume for this time of the morning. and 101, a lot of folks get off the san mateo bridge and head up past oyster point at south san francisco our photographer is there, and she's giving us this live shot. a good number ever cars, no major slowing. we along with 76 want to fill up your tank. you could pick up your

anti-muslim revolution in norwegian society. investigators are also analyzing a 1500-page manifesto he wrote which detailed bomb-making plans and his weapons. at least 86 people, mostly teens were shot and killed at the youth camp, seven others died when a bomb he allegedly made blew up at the country's capitol. the country held a moment of silence for the victims this morning. huge tragedy there. >> it's 5:25. we know facebook has been working on an ipad app but no one knew what it looked like until this morning. >> good morning. give credit to the guys at tech crunch. they figured out how to find this app which is not made available to the public yet. it looks good, it's a great mix of facebook's standard look with ipad functionality, there are of course apps for facebook for ipad out there already but none made officially by facebook.

bail. a third person was also arrested in this case on friday. that is 31-year-old dorene sanchez, said to be the sister of suspect louie sanchez, officials believe she was driving the getaway car on march 31st, the day that bryan stow was beaten. she has since been released on bail. just last week laura, bryan stow underwent emergency surgery after suffering a 30-second seizure. his family reports by the end of last week he was doing remarkably well. in fact, when a nurse asked him his last name he mouthed the word stow. >> we hope that recovery continues. thank you very much. it is 5:33. this morning a man has serious injuries after his car flipped over and burst into flames in pacifica. drivers on highway 1 called chp officers to the scene around 11:40 last night. officers shut down the southbound direction of the road while crews pulled the driver

out of the car to put out the flames. so far no word on what caused that car to flip over. >> all southbound lanes of 101 at sierra point parkway in brisbane are open today again after a two-car accident involving a suspected drunk driver. highway patrol says that at about 2:30 this morning the driver of a honda crashed into a tree along side the freeway. a mitsubishi was also involved in the crash. one of the cars flipped over. the chp has yet to say which drive ser suspected of driving under the influence. the driver arrested for dui is held at the san mateo jail in redwood city. the other driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment. >> a richmond teen will come home tonight after living through a bear attack in the alaskan wilderness. over the weekend a bear attack add group of campers including 18-year-old victor martin from richmond, while they were crossing a river north of

anchorage. martin and the rest were finishing up a month-long survival skills course when the bear attacked. the teen told troopers this were crossing the river when those at the front screamed about a bear coming toward them. the two teens at the front suffered the worst of the attack. they are now in the hospital in anchorage with life threatening injuries. martin managed to call his family shortly after being rescued. >> he said the bear had chased him. he fell down and started kicking and all he could do is kick and pray. >> in all, seven teenage boys were mauled but so far all are alive after the attack, the teens helped each other by setting up camp and calling for help. the bear was likely trying to defend her cub. police are investigating a deadly shooting. it come as the department is trying to target crime hot spots during summer.

christie smith is live in east palo alto. she joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning. for more than an hour we've been watching investigators go back and forth from behind the building here gathering evidence. that's where someone opened fire on two men in a parking lot outside of a tacaria. the sixth shooting this year. what marks a troubling spike in violence. this time police say they have no suspect information on this latest shooting. it happened about 10:30 last night in the 1400 block of east bayshore. the victims just 18 and 19 years old. one of them died at the scene. the other taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. so, what's behind all of these shootings? is it drug related? gang related? police are not sure. i spoke with the acting captain this morning. >> these detectives are working hard around the clock working on

all of these cases at the same time trying to determine what's going on, if they are related, and you know, put a stop to it and hope that people that are responsible for this accountable for their actions. >> reporter: this comes at the same time that police have announced a violence reduction plan. also working with other agencies to try and help curb the violence. even charging suspects sometimes in federal court when it applies. i mentioned earlier that this is the sixth homicide this year compared with last year there were four. live in east palo alto, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 5:37 now. now time to get an update when it comes to the forecast. >> good morning to you. yeah, another week, a new forecast to look forward to. things are going to change as we head toward the midsection of this week. but more of the same from the

weekend, for today, tomorrow all the way through wednesday. mostly cloudy starts, we're going to see the thickest fog likely between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. so we'll be watching for that. also later on today, mostly sunny conditions, that breeze will pick up. we're sandwiched between two systems now. by the end of i'd say wednesday, you'll start to notice temperatures gradually climbing, 90-degree weather back in the mix thursday through the weekend. 57 degrees right now in the city of san francisco, about noon 60 degrees, not going to be able to warm up that much today. limited sunshine until about noon. 4:00 p.m., 63, breezy conditions. then we'll climb in temperature each day all the way through the end of this week. i think we'll start to see a lack of that marine layer probably thursday, friday, into the weekend and wednesday less fog to deal with than what we'll see this morning. expecting a significant round. 70 degrees today in oakland. the seven-day outlook moments away. let's get you to work.

>> we're seeing some of that glow to the lights because of the moisture in the air. the south bay, i want to give good updates on northbound 87, a little slowing so really the construction zone is what i want to focus on. weed that full closure all night. and it's cleared. this phase of construction at tully is cleared. south an accident, a bus with went in a pole. that had the full closure at 152. the roadway has reopened, all lanes are clear but there is activity on the shoulder. they may have to close some lanes as the repair work goes on. it is a cell phone tower, not a power pole. great here, crossing the bay, the upper deck no problems through treasure island and passing the scene. debris reported so there might be pieces of something, usually plastic remains. here's the live shot, the glow to the lights, there you are passing the coliseum you see

that halo effect. talking about the marine layer and fog being an issue. we know some of the suspects, golden gate and parts of the north bay. >> the glow to the lights, they are safe and approachable for us. what about this. it sounds like a mission from a sci-fi movie. nasa wants to send astronauts to an asteroid. they have started to work on a new capsule to launch them into space but landing them on an asteroid, a different story. asteroids, they have little to know gravity so putting astronauts on the surface might require tethers to keep the space rock from working. >> a grappling hook. great use. >> nasa says it could one day save civilization from a catastrophic collision. the project has to be ready to launch by 2025.

moody's economy says look for a 1.8% jump in job growth over the next year. that's nationwide. some areas almost double that. in fact, take a look at california. 1.6% job growth, san francisco, though, 3.9%, more than double the state. and almost double the national as well. some of the industries specifically forecast to be very good in the next year in the bay area, leisure and hospitality, that's food service, jobs in hotels, like that. construction, professional and business services especially in the tech industries, so maybe a bay area bounce back there. and education and health services. overall when you look nationwide health services has done very well and authorities here in washington think it's because we've got this aging baby boom population, people get older they need more health care and that generates more jobs. so while we're dealing with high unemployment there is good news, more jobs on the way according

expected to go to trial accused of sexually assaulting two girls in a class field trip. the class from john f. kennedy middle school was visiting a park in redwood city in march when prosecutors say the boys broke away from the group before the attack. the boys are between 12 and 14 charged with lewdness, sexual battery and false imprisonment. each could face up to 15 years behind bars if convicted. >> it's 5:46. young girl is on the mend this morning after she was hit by a stray bullet during a slumber party. the mother of the 11-year-old says her daughter is still in the hospital but doing better. on friday, the girl was in bed at her cousin's home in the western addition when a bullet blasted through the window and hit her above the heart. police should release the names of the two teens arrested in connection with that shooting. >> the fatal shooting of a knife-wielding homeless man by bart officers will receive extra
