seen. going on right now through antioch. pittsburgh, became fine, walnut creek okay. no metering lights very smooth. 880 we have one issue at 29th avenue. laura, i'm going to hand it off to you. a lot of police activity. >> that's right. we're following this developing story all morning long from the east bay where a high-speed chase turned deadly of the chase ended 29th avenue off the highway 880 in oakland. that's where today in the day's christie smith joins us live with the latest on the chase. good morning. >> good morning to you, laura. the chp is still here taking measurements, taking photographs, making sure they do a very thorough investigation. now, when you look over at the car, the damage itself actually doesn't look that bad, if steve can pan over to it. chp tells us the driver was speeding. he wasn't wearing his seat belt and thrown from the car when it crashed. also alcohol was a factor they

say. this started 1:30 this morning on international and 47th. oakland police dealing with a shooting there. we're still trying to get details on that. minutes later same neighborhood the chp on patrol says they saw a driver weaving. they try to pull him over, blew through stoplights speeding 880 northbound, 80 miles an hour. he tried to get off at 29th avenue, lost control and crashed the car. he was taken to highland hospital and pronounced dead. all of this, the chp says, very avoidable. >> we did find signs of intoxication including open containers of alcoholic beverages in the car. then also yielding to the authority of law enforcement. this type of incident is totally avoidable and the driver would be alive today had they just yielded to the authority of the officers. >> reporter: i just spoke with the chp again this morning. they tell me the driver is a 19-year-old male from oakland.

they are trying to learn more about him this morning to see if there are any other factors going on that would have led him to try and run from police. for now, though, the 29th avenue off-ramp here on 880 is still closed this morning. again, i just spoke with chp and they are now telling me looks like it will reopen sometime this morning between 7:00 and 7:30. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, christie. right now fairfield fire officials are talking about a six-alarm fire at a plastic plant. holding a news conference, monitoring it for you. we'll let you know if anything important is said. the fire tore through macros plastics factory at travis air force base yesterday. workers using an open flame in the storage area may have sparked that fire. it burned for hours last night. thick, black smoke spewed from the factory into neighborhoods. even though that fire is out this morning, people are still

worried about that smoke, the toxic chemicals that may be in it. luckily no one is injured. air quality experts and environmentalists are in that area this morning to determine if the is toxic because of all that burning plastic. there was a voluntary evacuation order in place yesterday. it has since been lifted. accused serial killer joseph naso is expected back in court friday. a judge appointed someone to look into his finances to determine if he has enough money to pay for an advisory council. if he does not not the public will have to foot the bill. in court yesterday prosecutors revealed 77-year-old naso owns two safe-deposit boxes. in one newspaper clippings related to the four women that he is charged with killing was found. in the other was cash. he's accused of killing four northern california women in the 1990s. nd the cc1: opening statements begin today in the trial of los gatos

mother accused of having sex with a 16-year-old boy. sara cole charged with three felony counts of unlawful sex. court documents say cole bribed the boy with free marijuana, alcohol and cigarettes. the boy's parents got police involved after seeing disturbing text messages on his phone allegedly sent by cole. police on edge after a 13-year-old boy stabbed while walking his dog. marla tellez in the neighborhood. things are getting worse. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this park is called erickson park. it's well manicured, looks to be a family friendly park, the same property as erickson elementary school. can you see that in the distance here. this is in south san jose, really a nice neighborhood. it was here monday evening when

san jose police say a 13-year-old boy was out walking his dog when he was approached by two teen boys. they asked him if he was in a gang. he's not. he said no. the teens began punching him and then stabbed him in the back several times. he is recovering at valley medical center this morning. the good news is he expected to be okay. i just spoke to a man who happened to be walking his dog through the park just a few minutes ago. he lives right nearby. he says up until now this area has been safe. in fact, a buddy of his recently ran into some trouble here. >> breaking in his car. him and his brother were able to detain him until the police came. i just notice like more graffiti on the benches and walls. because i have two young kids and they come here all the time and play by themselves. i told them they can't come over anymore unless we're with them. seems like it might be getting

out of control. >> reporter: mark hernandez says he's noticed more teens hanging out and drinking in this park. neighbors are hoping the stabbing will get more police patrols out here which may be tough, though, considering the deep budget cuts the city is facing and the recent police layoffs. now to reiterate the 13-year-old boy who was stabbed monday night, he's expected to be okay. in fact, laura, he should be released from valley medical center in the next couple of days. that's according to his family. san jose police tell us three boys are responsible for the stabbing and all three are in custody. >> okay. looks like we saw a possible mug shot of one of the suspects there. thank you very much, marla. 6:07, long gone, the gunman that fired on an east bay park police officer, they have taken off. though helicopters swept east bay hills yesterday, didn't find the gunman. park police think they are protecting a marijuana grow operation. they say they will return with reinforcements to get rid of all

those plants. this morning wildlife officials are warning people near half moon bay about a mountain lion that killed several animals. state game officials say dead sheep and goats found near purisima creek road monday night. police determined they were likely killed by a mountain lion. officials say if you encounter a mountain lion, face the animal, make noise and try to look larger by waving your arms and throwing rocks. san francisco mayor ed lee is getting more pressure to run for a full term. this time from a former mayor of san francisco. senator dianne feinstein told the chronicle last night, his responsibility is to the people of san francisco and the voters alone should determine whether this talented public servant should continue on the job. feinstein apparently told lee as much in person when both were at the white house for the giants visit. in recent weeks he has been more receptive to returning but is not committed to it. he's still on vacation until monday. the filing deadline to run for

mayor is august 12th. a lot of support there. it is 6:08 now, time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we've got a really good looking day. our temperatures are climbing from yesterday's highs so make sure you're ready for this warm-up, really starting to set in as we head towards this weekend and our temperatures climb into the mid-90s. looks like saturday will be the hottest day in the forecasted period. if you want to make outdoor plans, a little better weather as we head through saturday and sunday. excuse me sunday then saturday. this is what we're looking at right now. we've got a little reduced visibility in novato, nine miles of visibility. however, numbers are dropping we'll watch those as you head through the morning hours. mild conditions yet again today, really comfortable at the coast. san francisco between about 73 and 77 degrees in the city today depending on where you work. downtown it tends to get a little hotter. low pressure sits to the north. actually been nudged up just a little bit by an expanding area

of high pressure. now, this is amplifying here for us. that means it's not only going to get hotter, we're going to start to see offshore flow, less and less low clouds cover to start out. a potential for pressure to come north maybe even arrest along the peninsula. we could see isolated renegade thunderstorms through saturday and sunday. that's what we're watching for. otherwise looking good, standard morning. 54 in oakland, 53 in san mateo, coast.gging the cc1: 4:00 p.m., 89 degrees, breezy conditions, completely clear in the city of san jose. a really great day to get a look at those stars, if you want to take a look at the stars tonight it should be clear as well. a really clear shot of the moon already this morning. you can probably see it for the next 20 minutes and then we're done wit. 86 in fremont, 86 san jose, 90 in gilroy, the festival coming up this weekend. the forecast for that on the way. get to work on time.

mike. >> good morning, christie, a couple of advisories issued by chp. i was going to tell you anyway but i have backing now. looking at the maze and a smooth drive. no metering lights at the toll plaza but the cars there northbound 880 at 29th. you heard christie's live report at the scene where the end of a police chase deadly accident at the scene. investigation continues at 29th. so you'll use 23rd. we'll track this throughout the morning. i can give updates on twitter and facebook. 880 smooth past that, 330 is the option. heading to san mateo bridge 880 fine, off the freeway a little slowing heading over the san mateo bridge. right now speed sensors show a smooth flow towards the peninsula 101, 92 westbound at 101, accident involving a semi truck. live look, traffic slowing down a little bit coming off that flat section to the highrise.

wshz, 6:14. talks for a shared stadium for both bay area football teams could be heating up. reports say 49ers president has been in meetings for a possible deal. damian trujillo live in santa clara with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. one minute they are going at it alone. the next minute we find jed york and 49ers have been meeting with the raiders about a possible shared stadium across the street from 49ers headquarters. both teams conceded last night at a league function that they have been having talks about sharing a new stadium. that's something that the nfl would like to see. the nfl is where a lot of the money will come from for stadium financing. the niners and raiders play in the oldest stadiums in the league. the proposed project would cost

roughly $1 billion. it sounds like a better sales pitch for the league if two teams will be sharing that cost. in tweets i received overnight, it looks as if the stadium project in santa clara will be ready for kickoff by 2015. that could mean 16 games played per year in the parking lot of great america instead of eight games. there's still opposition in santa clara, mainly people who don't want any public funds used for the project. some of the funding is expected to come from the santa clara redevelopment agency, an agency the governor is threatening to close down across the state. so shovels are not on the ground just yet. but with this announcement, it makes it seem as if they are pulling the shovels out of the back of the pickup truck. it seems autumn winds might soon be blowing through silicon valley. >> we'll see if they are gold or silver. >> nice catch. >> thank you very much, damien.

6:16, radars meantime reporting to training camp. it all begins with them for a team meeting at the naacp marriott. raiders have to work out a lot of roster issues to meet the new salary cap. they play their first preseason game august 11st at the coliseum around the corner. the tough economy put a bay area animal shelter in a tough spot. they are asking the community for help. they are hoping to raise $125,000 in the months to avoid cutting programs and ultimately closing the pleasanton shelter. directors say they have seen a decrease in donations as operating expenses go up. valley humane society has rescued thousands of animals and provided several pet therapy programs for students and the elderly. it will cost to go to burning man this year. the countercultural festival

sold out for the first time in history. we checked stub hub and most there are around $100 mark. one seller has a few for $5,000. if you've really got some money to burn, one seller asking $25,000 for a ticket to burning man. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren right now. it is 6:18. have you ever been? >> no, and i don't plan on it. good morning to you. we're looking pretty good this morning. we actually have some pretty thick fog but it's hugging the coast, not penetrating inland as we've seen over the past couple of days, which is really good news. starting off with sunshine already in the city of san jose. for san francisco you're going to have to wait until noon, mix of sun and clouds, 68 degrees. then we start to see the cloud cover break apart shining through breezy conditions at 4:00 p.m., 73 in the city. that's your high for today, up 5 to 8 degrees in most cities from

yesterday's daytime highs. we continue to warm up as we head throughout the weekend. the biggest difference through yesterday and today will be the lack of cloud cover. i don't think it will last as long as yesterday. mild conditions, low pressure has taken a ride to the north. the jet stream overall has pushed to the north, a big amplifying ridge of high pressure takes control of our weather pattern. it's going to continue to amplify and really start to impact us as we head towards thursday, friday, saturday. also we have a chance for isolated thunderstorms. you can see wraparound moisture from the south pushing to the north. well, as of right now it's impacting areas even in monterey. for us, i don't think we'll see that impact until probably late tomorrow into friday. 86 degrees in fremont, 89 in san jose. 90 degrees in gilroy as we head throughout tomorrow we're going to add an additional 3 to 5 degrees. warm-up continues all the way through saturday. here is a look at your extended forecast. inland temperatures warming down right hot, 96 degrees on saturday. take a look at what you're

news outlets might be heading to the bay bridge. expect the flow on 880 as you head through downtown oakland at least through the next half hour. looking over here to the south bay northbound flois with this sensors, that is the commute direction. smooth drive with the circle around shoreline expected to be very crowded this evening because of a soldout concert jason aldean. >> thanks for the update. 6:24. stanford university hoping third time is the charm as they plan to build miles of hiking trails. the $10 million plan would build a two-mile segment in the alpine road trail between menlo park and portola valley. it would replace walk walks that are narrow and in some places just a shoulder on the road. san mateo supervisors voted to hear the public's opinion for the next three months before thaeg that final decision.

critics say it's like building a road instead of a bicycle path. they cited community opposition. were hackers on paypal hacking or a sit-in. >> some call it h activism. some call it criminal, some say civil disobedience. you may recall the company called anonymous was upset with paypal after wikileaks could not use it to collect donations. they sent nonsense to the website. it's different than hacking into a website. this morning they issued a statement, anonymous did, to fbi and paypal saying, "what the fbi needs to learn is there's a vast difference between a digital sit-in and in effecting computers. and yet both of these are

bay this morning. a high-speed chase ended deadly. it actually ended on the 29th exit off highway 880 in oakland when a teenager driver was car.n from thecc1: that's where "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. i have new information from the chp, a clearer picture of exactly how fast this driver was going. they say he was blowing past stoplights on the streets, reached speeds up to 50 miles an hour. investigators still piecing it together this morning but it all ended here in a deadly crash off the 29th avenue exit from 880, a really tight turn. they say the driver did not have a seat belt on and was thrown from the car. here is what we know. about 1:30 this morning oakland police responded to a shooting near 47th and international. still trying to get details on that chp says shortly after, in unrelated incident, they

spotted a driver weaving in the: same area. he failed to stop, they say, and sped onto interstate 880 northbound. officers tell me he got up to 80 miles an hour on the freeway. the legal limit here, they say, is 55. >> roughly about 25 miles over the posted speed limit on the freeway. then when they exited the freeway the speed was too fast, driver was impaired, couldn't safely negotiate the exit and ended up colliding. >> now investigators tell me the driver was likely drinking. they found open containers of alcohol in and around the car. the driver, they say, is a 19-year-old male from oakland. he was taken to highland hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. now, as a result of this horrible accident, the chp has been out here for hours investigating and the 29th avenue off-ramp has been shut down. they are telling me it should reopen between 7:00 and 7:30. reporting live in oakland,

christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a loss of a young life. thank you very much, christie. today marks two months anniversary of the distance answer of michelle. they will hold a rally close to the place she was last seen. she disappeared in late may. police have since classified the case as homicide. the family is not giving up hope. they have raised $100,000 reward for a safe return. the rally will be held at the park. it starts tonight at 6:00. family members, hayward police and mark class will be speaking. three teens behind bars this morning accused of stabbing a 13-year-old boy while he was walking his dog. "today in the bay's" marla tellez on how they captured the suspect. >> good morning. erickson park where the stabbing took place is a popular spot for people to come with their dogs

and go for a stroll. we've seen a couple of people doing that bright and early this morning. it was on the same property as erickson elementary school behind us near almond and branham. it's hard to believe he was stabbed while walking his dog in the park. it was still light outside, just after 5:30. the boy was approached by two teen boys. they asked him if he was in a gang. he said no. they began punching him and stabbed him in the back several times. he survived. in fact he's expected to be release freddie valley medical center in the next couple of days. that's good news there. mark hernandez, he lives nearby. we stopped him this morning as he was walking his dog. he said hearing the news is alarming. >> shocked, i guess. i have two young kids and they come here all the time and play in the park.

i told them they can't come over here anymore. we have noticed more increase of people hanging out, young people hanging out drinking. >> reporter: mark says he's also noticed more graffiti on park benches. the overall feeling from neighbors here is concern. they are hoping the stabbing will get the attention of the police department and in turn attract more patrols through the neighborhood. as for the people responsible for the stabbing, police say three people are in custody this morning. two juveniles and a 19-year-old. good news, that 13-year-old boy is expected to be released from valley medical center by the weekend. his parents say his kidneys were punctured in the stabbing but he is a survivor and he'll be okay. that's the good news. >> that he very much, marla. it is 6:35 right now. a thief made up with much more than a car in walnut creek. he now has pricey giants

memorabilia as well. it happened on north california boulevard. hidden in the back of the car, autographed bats and balls signed by giants legend hall of famer. the surveillance view actually captured the theft and the suspect is described as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5'10" thin build, shaved head and goatee. this morning an underwater plant is tlitenning the start of the americas cup. exotic seaweed which can grow 10 feet pose dangers to native kelp throughout san francisco bay. the plan is found at some piers and could attach itself on spectator boats. state regulators are refusing to issue permits for the race until organizers can prove the event will not significantly spread that seaweed. one option to deal with the plant is an eradication program which would be funded by the americas cup and port

authorities. it's 6:36 right now, time to check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we've got a great looking weekend at the coast. it's going to be hot inland. low pressure is kind of on the same vertical plain as it was yesterday but the difference is it's been nudged up to the north just a little bit. so for us that translates into less low clouds cover, a weaker on-shore flow. we're going to see a really nice day today, more sunshine at the coast. yeah, a little bit hot inland. high pressure still in control. southwestern most portion of the states entire weather pattern from the four corners region all the way to southern california, this big ridge is bringing in some pretty good monsoonal moisture. that's what's going to happen as we head through saturday and sunday afternoon. see some of that monsoonal flow come up into our neck of the woods. that means it's going to be allega little bit hotter, a little bit muggier, isolated thunderstorms, south bay, east bay and

welcome back, everyone. good wednesday morning to you. take a live look outside, certainly different from the golden gate bridge that is fogged in. the post office could be closed soon. u.s. post office is looking at 3700 offices around the country to decide whether or not they should stay open. more than a dozen offices flagged are here in the bay area. "today in the bay's" tracie potts live in washington with the details. a lot of people not using them. >> electronic mail, east bay, things online, a lot not walking

into the community post office anymore. some of these stations are making less than $50 a day. the postal service says they have to look at shutting them down to save money. they are $8.5 billion in the red last year. they have come up with a list. now we have a list. take a look. as you mentioned a dozen in the bay area including five in san francisco, two in oakland, one in san jose and others in the area. what they are trying to do, the same as ups and fedex have done, they are trying to streamline and be more efficient. by closing local post offices, what they hope to do is transfer services by buying stamps and packaging when you want to mail something to local businesses. so you could go by a pharmacy or grocery store and get those things. a lot less overhead for a postal service already deep in the red. >> having a tough time. thank you very much, tracie.

6:43. in just days the country's checks could start bouncing unless lawmakers make moves to meet in the middle. two rival plans. one problem, the cost. republican speaker john boehner digging for more money because his plan is $150 billion short in savings. putting off today's vote to try to get those numbers in line. you can only afford to lose 22 republican votes. ten have already said they are voting against it. >> want a solution not a deal. i don't think this goes far enough. >> does this keep us in the battle or end the battle. >> senator harry reid is also postponing a vote on his plan which saves more money without touching medicare and social security. 6:44 right now, time to talk baseball. giants pitcher tim lincecum expected to take the mound in philadelphia provided he feels better. the a's skipped yesterday's game against the phillies because of

with the story for us. >> reporter: the shovels are not on the ground just yet but seems like they are pulling shovels out of the back of the pickup truck. a big admission by both teams that happened overnight. that's because both the niners, as you mentioned, and raiders conceded that teams have been meeting about possibly sharing a stadium. that's what the nfl likes to hear. the league repeatedly said a shared stadium project might be the way to go in the bay area. otherwise the region might lose both teams with no new stadiums. the announcement comes on the heels of an announcement in oakland indicating it had a project in mind but that would be several years away. if all goes as planned, could see kickoff in santa clara by 2015. there's opposition to any stadium plan here in santa clara. mainly people concerned about traffic and use of redevelopment money to help fund the new stadium. the front-runners just said a couple days ago, they are ready
