i'm kris sanchez along with jeff ranieri who has your forecast now. gradual clearing of the ground cover through the peninsula and the coastline. by the afternoon, temperatures warm the most in the south and east bay. expecting 88 in san jose, 86 in gilroy for the gilroy garlic festival. 82349 livermore, walnut creek and pleasanton. a slig chance ofsl sierra thunderstorms in weekend. humidity sticks around and teeratures in the upper 80s to near 90 through wednesday of next week. the search continues for the gunman who shot and killed a good samaritan as he and his family delivered food in the homeless in oakland. oakland police released a description of the car used wednesday in that drive-by shooting and the family and friends of the man known as brother john continue to mourn his death. cheryl hurd learned about brother john and those who knew him best.

>> reporter: this is a case where the police need your help. you have a family in mourning and the community has lost someone who truly cared about them. lolita powell, the wife of the good samaritan gunned down while feeding the hungry could barely stand friday night in east oakland. >> his wife is hurting, his family is hurting oh god. you say you came to hear the broken hearted. >> reporter: brother john was shot and killed after midnight wednesday while he and his family stopped by to drop off food in the 1,000 block of 47th avenue in oakland. his family says feeding the homeless was his calling. his pregnant wife and her two children were in the car at the time when powell was shot in the head in a drive-by shooting. bill holloway was there and saw it all. >> i wish that had been me instead of him. i really do. i would not hesitate to go instead of him. >> reporter: oakland police

area news. the man wrongly accused of beating bryan stow is breaking his silence from jail. that man, giovanni ramirez now exonerated issued a statement through his attorney saying, quote, more than anything, i'm upset not for myself but for the grief and embarrassment my friends, family and loved ones have been put through. the 31-year-old is currently serving a ten-month sentence for an unrelated parole violation, though his attorney is seeking his release from jail. as for the new suspects, louie sanchez and marvin norwood, both will ab rained on august 10th on charges after salt, mayhem and battery. bryan stow remains in serious condition at san francisco general hospital after that attack at dodgers stadium on march 31st. burglars are not taking a summer vacation this year. home robberies are on the rise. theh latest hot spot is on the peninsu peninsula. belmont, seven homes were robbed since monday. >> reporter: belmont police say two men are targeting homes here and they have a strategy.

knox, sollecito and a third man were convicted and sent to jail for kercher's murder. nato warplanes carried out strikes on libyan transmitters last night. they used state-of-the-art precision guided munitions. nato says three satellite transmission dishes were disabled by the air strike in tripoli. reports indicate up to a dozen explosions rocked the libyan capital. to china where family and friends of the victims of last week's train crash will pay last respects today. 40 people died a week ago today when a high-speed train crossing a bridge was derailed by a lightning strike and another train slammed into it from behind. a chinese railway official blamed the crash on design flaws in the equipment that failed to flash and correct signals after that lightning strike. in northern japan, flooding and landslide warnings for areas including the tsunami disaster

this is "today in the bay." a few minutes ago we saw one of the animals that fishes in our bay waters. this is the competition. here's to hoping those guys will have something good for dinner tonight. debate over medical marijuana has officially gone to the dogs. now being developed in seattle, a pot patch for pooches. reporter eric wilkinson has the story. >> reporter: we all love our pets and want to keep them happy. since it's hard for them to roll a joint, a seattle company is developing a medical marijuana patch for dogs. >> i'm sure the dogs will enjoy it. >> reporter: jim alecson's medical marijuana delivery system patented a patch called

the giants fan, broke his silence from jail. that man, giovanni ramirez now exonerated issued a statement through his attorney saying, quote, more than anything i'm upset not for myself but for the grief and embarrassment my friends, family and loved ones have been put through. the 31-year-old is currently serving a ten-month sentence for an unrelated parole violation. though his attorney is seeking his release from jail. as for the new suspects, louie sanchez and marvin nor wid will be arraigned on august 10th. bryan stow remains in serious condition at san francisco general hospital after at tack at dodger stadium march 31st. also the memorial continues for brother john the good samaritan who was gunned down in oakland while trying to feed the homeless. the investigation continues there as well. we want to thank you for making us a part of your morning. we have more local news at 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00. we update nbcicalbayarea all da
