middle of the day. last week there were seven burglaries or attempted burglaries in belmont. police say all of them between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the central section of the city. word of the break-ins spread quickly. >> the nerves are raw and we're locking the doors and paying much more attention when we leave. even for short periods of time that windows aren't open and the garage door is down and all of those things. >> they are taking jewelry and electronics according to police. >> oakland police investigating three killings in a four-hour period. the most recent happened 3:20 a.m. near 87th and g, there were many gun shots in the area. they didn't find any one at the scene but a few minutes later they received a call that a man was at a hospital. he died there. 15 minutes before that an

ambulance was flagged down near 30th and telegraph. inside a 26-year-old woman. she was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. still moving back, just before midnight saturday, officers received a call of gun shots near sunny side and 92nd where they found a 16-year-old boy, gunshot wounds, dead as well. police do not think the three incidents are related. the shootings bring the number of shootings in oakland to 70. police and crimestoppers offer $10,000 rewards in each of those cases for information leading to an arrest. >> this morning a shaken community still mourning as friends and family remember the lives of a palo alto family killed in a fiery crash on vacation in canada. hundreds gathered in palo alto to remember little veronica, her sister samantha, their parents robert howard and wife ana maria

monterey, cloud build-up for the weekend. sierra locations may see more thunder but for the bay area it's the strong sea breeze which is going to make for a mild august afternoon. 80 at best around san jose, 70s inland. you'll find lower 80s out toward the tri-valley. 60s for san francisco and oakland. 75 degrees around santa rosa and inland, sacramento upper 80s. very mild temperatures for august and the seven-day forecast continues to trend. we'll see the sea breeze turning stronger come thursday with cooling temperatures to wrap up the week. >> we'll take you out to the south bay. we have that issue, the fuel spill and there's the live shot of it. the photographer is showing us all of the activity off of 101, and the reason why 101 closed at -- i should say the off ramp. 101 is moving but all of this cleanup continues after a fuel spill and accident. back to the maps you see where that is in relation to the rest of the south bay. 237 and you can exit around and

>> welcome back to you. a live look at the bay bridge. it's 4:43. here is a literal canal diary. a journal written during the second world war was returned to its rightful owner this weekend after almost seven decades. a couple from new zealand delivered the diary to the widow kathy grands on saturday. this book was first discovered on a wharf in wellington, new zealand, 69 years ago. the family who found it kept it on a shelf in their home ever since. it was the journal of delmar grands, her husband, who served in the battle of 1942.

he kept a record of his experiences. he died 18 years ago but his wife kathy is still alive. she says reading the journal brings back many memories of her husband and taught her things she didn't know about him and his experience in the war. >> how does it make you feel? proud? >> it was many years ago, and of course i thought to myself you know, no wonder he was a nervous wreck. >> kathy and her husband met as pen pals and met in person in 1948, married on halloween, had eight children who remain in the bay area. >> more banks are failing. 99 blue men took over the box office. nicole lapin live. good morning. >> hey, very good morning to you, scott. big story of course, the european markets and u.s. futures higher across the board after news that the u.s. debt

deal came out of washington late last night. investors you buoyed by the news. now the plan includes raising the debt ceiling and a two-part deficit reduction plan. the first $900 billion spending cut and then $1.5 trillion established by a special committee to be voted on in december. the plan will be voted on later as today expected to be done by the deadline tomorrow. there are concerns that the liberal democrats may not support the plan as it's missing revenue increases and conservative republicans may reject the plan as there is no balanced budget amendment. so, a little bit of you know this from your trading days, maybe sell the news tomorrow. also, three more u.s. banks failed including the first this year in virginia and indiana. the fdic reported integra, virginia business bank and bank of meridian failed. integra is the third largest to

fail this year. according to the fdic, 61 banks have failed this year. they are tiny, they are blue, and we're not talking about a little box from tiffany's. they are ruling the box office. ground level. 2,000 feet this morning. right now northwest wind at 7 miles per hour. and we're seeing 50s and 60s right now and chances are for the coast and san francisco we're going to stay in the 60s. it's a healthy sea breeze reaching all the way to the fairfield. good news for air quality. nothing but green which will tell you that we're not going to be heating up that much around the bay area. we had big time thunder across the sierra this weekend. you can see that moisture coming in from the south this morning but later on this afternoon that will start to push off to the east. so things should calm down as the monsoon moisture moves into southern nevada and arizona here over the next couple of days. if you're heading into southern california we have hot temperatures around l.a., 85 downtown los angeles, palm springs living up to standards at 106, 90s around fresno and bakersfield. 67 degrees around monterey. we'll see sunshine toward santa cruz and monterey, 89 in sacramento and about 90 for ukiah. the bay area, temperatures today

closely. we're going to have that and more coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you much. 100,000 people packed the streets of san francisco early yesterday morning to watch about 25,000 people run. the winner has a story. michael wardian won the 34th annual marathon, he raced despite the fact he was recovering from serious food poisoning. he says he picked up in mill valley the day before. he has olympic dreams and plans to run the january olympic trials. the winner of the half marathon, a stanford student, also plans to run those trials. i got to be honest. i thought they ran faster than that. i don't think we were at the head of the race with the video. >> a little more -- walk-a-thon. a little nice trot there. but yeah, the first place winner went faster than the video we showed you. interested in finishing because
