light flashing in my head. 580 at north flynn. it's eastbound. that's opposite the main commute. you see the slowing. may be looky who slowing. a typical slowdown for a friday but we'll watch to see if it affects it coming up. >> thank you very much, mike. a lot of people waking up with money on their mind. the federal government released its latest jobs report last hour. how could it affect the markets after yesterday's 512-point drop on wall street? scott mcgrew is in the newsroom with a look at the report. >> first jobs, then wall street. the jobs, okay. here are the numbers, 117,000 to the positive, for the july jobs report that gives our unemployment rate at 9.1%. that's better than it's been. it's down .1% but i want to call your attention to the 117, that's not good enough.

you need 125,000 jobs just to cover the 18-year-olds that enter the economy every month. so, not particularly of a positive number. how will wall street react? that is a tough question. as we look at some of the laborers out there. wall street will have to look at the negative number, the negative net number and not be happy with it. as far as if it had been a worse number it might have been better on wall street. the immediate may have jumped in and given us action. these are the numbers we've got. they are muddy numbers at best. these are nationwide numbers. as far as local, santa clara county, as far as silicon valley, the numbers are much better. bob has been covering that for us. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. some tell the business journal that the hiring that they are

seeing ensilicon valley reminds them of what it was like during the dotcom boom. you look at companies like emay it seems that way. the online augs near had 600 openings. apple is looking to hire 600. the unemployment rate for tech professionals is just 3.3%. that's a drop of two points from where it was in january. the white house is impressed so much so that the council on job flew out to silicon valley to pick the brains of the leaders, to figure out how they can spread that job growth throughout the country. the growth in tech is fueling hiring. you got to remember those new computer engineers who got a new job, they have to eat, need a place to lish, et cetera, which is why restaurants and construction added thousands of jobs. however, in spite of what i told you, the unemployment rate itself in the south bay, you

take into account all of the industries is not so good. in june it was 10.5%. that's up from 9.9% in may. this seems counter intuitive. i told you they added thousands of jobs. labor experts believe this is a reflect of more unemployed people getting back in the job search. now is that -- that businesses are riring. not everyone is hiring. i remind you of a report we told you about a few weeks ago. cisco systems, announcing it will lay off soon 6500 employees. worldwide. a huge chunk of those from here in the south bay. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> many will be out looking as well. 6:04. if there is a silver lining to the bad economy it's mortgage rates. they are dropping to new historic lows. 15-year fixed and 5-year adju

adjustable rates already loans. analysts say mortgage rates tend to follow treasury yields which fell on news the economy was growing much weaker than expect. we'll update you all morning on the markets. we'll have a live report from cnbc, and be live from the financial district and we'll have the opening bell live at 6:30. 6:05. new this morning san jose police are investigating an early morning homicide at an apartment building south of stevens creek boulevard. investigators say a woman was stabbed to death on albany droyv when officers arrived around 230 clock. they entered the apartment they found the body of the woman. investigators will remain at that scene collecting evidence.

>> we're also following a developing story out of san francisco. a 9-year-old boy is in the hospital right now fighting for his life. he was hit by a wrong way driver while christie smithing the street and the driver never stopped. it happened after 10:30 at mission and new montgomery near the art museum. christie smith is live in hayward where police say they dropped the truck matching the description from san francisco and took that driver into custo custody. >> reporter: witnesses describe a horrible scene of a driver going the wrong way down the street in san francisco, and slamming into a 9-year-old boy trying to cross the street. san francisco police put out a : bulletin. about 90 minutes later hayward police spot add damaged pickup truck on motion and industrial. witnesses believe it was the with severe front end

damage. some witnesses were brought to the scene. police tell me they believe that the driver may have been under the influence. here's what we know. investigator s know that he was crossing mission near new montgomery when a truck came the wrong way and plowed into the boy. the driver kept on going, witnesses couldn't believe their eyes. >> i believe he was speeding, heading somewhere. maybe he had hit some fares on you mention it. he was trying to make a right on third and hit cab on third and mission. made a right on third and was trying to get away. >> reporter: as he mentioned the driver hit cars and then got on the freeway. the scene so bad that even san francisco police chief greg, the

boy was from philly and had gone to see a giants game last night. he's now at san francisco general where critical injuries we're told. that's the latest. live in hayward, today in the bay. >> let's hope he makes a speedy recovery. 6:08. san leandro police are looking into a string of recent robberies that appear related. five have been robbed in three weeks. you see the locations of the robbery on the screen. in each instance they were walking alone when they say a group of two to four approached them. the victim was pushed to the ground and robbed of their wallet or purse. no one was serious hi injured. a los gatos mother will have to register as a sex offender the rest of her life. in a well pub sized trial a jury

found sarah cole guilty. she was found not guilty of two felony counts of unlawful sex with a 16 querld boy who was a good friend of her son. she will be sentenced at the end of the month. a summer tradition is coming under scrutiny this morning for violence that seems to follow it. music in the park has drawn people downtown for 23 yearssh but in the past couple of years police is seen a spike in the number of vandalism. the downtown association says it's unfair to lead with crime that happens then ends. >> people again hours after the event, and up to ten blocks away so we're curious how the police department are arriving at statistics. >> some are frustrated with the

violence, hoping to see changes with the event. the downtown, so has considered charging at mission but so far dhaept free to the public. >> nice to get out and about in the gay area. we'll have great temperatures for today and this weekend. >> you know, when we have nice weather it always makes for more free fun because you can take anything that you wanted to do inside, bring it outside and hence you get a little more fun. if you want a picnic, in the beginning of august it's going to be comfortable. temperatures running about with 10 to 15 degrees below seasonal charges. we have good possibility. it is starting to drop in the north bay. looking good. our san a rosa number has come down to three miles of visibility. watch out. also we do have a little bit of that drizzle generated about i a deep marine layer.

>> welcome back everyone. a live look at the big board at the new york stock exchange this morning. markets open in about 15 minutes. we're of course keeping an eye on the futures before the opening bell. following this morning's jobs report. phil herrera is live in new york, she joins us with the latest. good morning. >> good morning, laura. it looks like it's going to abbet are day at least after the opening bell. the jobs number as you mentioned was better than expected and what was significant was the two prior months of jobs numbers were revised upward. that has some traders on the floor i've been talking to saying that maybe we are starting to see a turn in the jobs picture. certainly not as fast as we

would like to see it but any news is good news at this point on the jobs front. so wall street is expected to open higher. the question is whether that advance will hold. it is a friday, a lot of traders don't like to hold big stock positions over the weekend. so we may have a higher opening but that's no guarantee we won't see the markets sell off a little into the close. >> hopefully not like yesterday. we'll be monitoring it. thank you. >> right. >> today in the bay's kimberly tere joins us in san francisco's financial district getting reaction finding out what investors are planning next. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. traders are arriving here at work hoping for a better day than they had yesterday. but at the same time they say they have been in this business long enough to know there are ups and downs and this is a bump in the road. tell that to consumers. people are concerned about high unemployment numbers, concerned about the prospect of a

prolonged recession and of course they are worried that the government doesn't have a viable plan to stimulate the economy. because of all of this financial analysts say consumers are keeping their cash close. however, traders we talked to say people should not panic and also should not be so concerned with the numbers. they say prudence is the most reliable way to navigate this market. >> it's good to diversify and reallocate and take a look at basically what your investments are. you should do that constantly. at the same time don't have a knee-jerk reaction. it doesn't make sense. >> reporter: traders say you can still make money in this market. that's despite the doom and gloom. we have to mention the new numberscc1: are out which could impact trading.cc1: the federal government is reporting employers added 117,000 jobs last month, that brings the unemployment rate to 9.1%. that is down from 9.2% in june.

it's not really good enough, financial experts say we need to add at least 125,000 jobs to keep up with population growth. kimberly tere, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. markets open in about 22 minutes or so. we're soon also going to find out if ed lee will run for mayor of san francisco. lee will announce by monday if he plans to run for the job. his office won't confirm it but he'll make a decision next week. lee became mayor last january and until recently had said he would not seek re-election. if he enters the race, some analysts say he would instantly become a favorite. lee has until august 12 to decide. >> it's 6:18. i want to check the forecast with christina loren. >> maybe you're trying to decide what you're going to do with your two days off. we're kicking off a weekend, a friday. weather looking good.

we have a camera north of there. he did find this. let's get the live shot. he found smoke. the bottom of the screen, just off sunol by the golf course. in the distance over the ridge there is smoke. it's white. sometimes we see smoke coming out of exhaust out of some of the factories or businesses. so we're checking. it was reported as smoke on maybe a telephone pole. if this is not a fire, this is just off 680. no major problems reported. we've got our eyes on this. we'll follow this as well. the south bay moving smoothly. check our maps, we'll end with this, the bay bridge toll plaza not a major issue but we'll show it to you. >> good news it didn't look like dark smoke. 6:24. another reality show talking about running for president. >> my announcement is that i am running for president of the united states. >> wow.

>> yeah, reality show star roseanne barr appearing on "the tonight show" offering up her tongue in cheek intentions to run for the white house. she says she will run as a member of her own party she calls the green tea party and have all taxpayers serve as her vice president. she has her own reality show called roseanne's nuts working on a farm in hawaii. >> scott is watching wall street after yesterday's fall. some stocks hit harder than others. >> that's right. if you were a vulnerable company to start with you were really hit hard yesterday. take for instance, yahoo! that company shares fell more than 7%. almost 8%, in yesterday's trading. yahoo! has trouble generating new revenue, it's eclipsed by google. and tesla was down 9%.

again the more vulnerable the company the bigger the hit you take in these tough times. apple shares were down as well, but yesterday's action put apple within reach of becoming the world's most valuable company. exxon-mobil was hit harder, so apple needs $16 billion in additional value till we get to say the most important company in the history of mankind is in cupertino. not everything is positive for apple. google either. this is national public radio reporter who did a report for this american life looking at how patents are killing business. she is one of the reporters on press here this week and we're going to look at this phenomenon. just this week microsoft hit going to well a lawsuit over the android system that could be huge damage for the android system. so we'll take a look at that at 9:00 a.m. sunday morning.

truck. one was so damaged that it was easy to spot hear at mission and industrial in hayward. the driver was arrested here and san francisco police route witnesses over from san francisco who believe that this was the truck that hit a 9-year-old boy, the arrest happening about 90 minutes afterwards here in the east bay. police say that the boy was walking ahead of his family, crossing mission street. it was around 10:30 last night when a driver hit him. didn't bother to stop and was going the wrong way. the boy is from philly and had just come from enjoying a giants game. we spoke with witnesses. >> that's very tough. especially being that they were coming from the game, trying to have a good evening. something that unfortunate to happen. >> the driver we're told hit several other cars, both parked and cars in the street.

the boy, he was taken to san francisco general opter. we're told with life threatening injuries. san francisco police chief came by the take a look for himself. we wanted to mention san francisco police still asking witnesses to come forward. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. let's hope he recovers. it's 6:36. new images of the two men possibly linked to two murders in east palo alto. hess want to talk to 24-year-old fidel silva and 19-year-old jaime cardenas in current weather conditions the murders of cath fisher and hugo chavez. fisher was gunned down while sitting in a car. chavez was killed six days later. police received tips that point to cardenas and silva as suspects. a third man, christian fuentes

think they make a difference at all? >> reporter: looks like at least so far they may be making things better. this jobs report from july was way better than economists predicted and quite a bit better than we saw last month. five times as many jobs created in july. 117,000 in all. that drove the unemployment rate down ever so slightly to 9.1%. 154,000 private jobs, many of them in retail and health care but that was balanced by a big loss in government jobs, a lot of that had to do with the government shutdown in minnesota last month. earnings are up, it's a better report than expected but it's still not quite what we need to see to keep this recovery going. later today president obama expected to announce a new plan to get businesses to hire military veterans. there are a million looking for work. if we give tax breaks to

businesses for every one they hire. >> got to turn a lot of things around, really. thank you very much. 6:43. we should learn today when faa employees and construction workers can get back to work. congressional leaders reached agreement yesterday to end the partial shutdown of the federal aviation administration. actually it should be final today. the deal doesn't end the fight over unionization or funding but it gets people back to work. construction on the new control tower at oakland international is one of the projects that is on hold. >> the organizers behind the annual burning man festival making a big announcement in san francisco. burning man will now become a non-profit after being a privately held company. nonprofit launch happens in the pleasanta this afternoon. there will be art displays, music and rallies and several

speakers including ed lee. organizers plan to build an urban cultural center in the tenderloin. it will provide sites for what they call ritual celebration. today's event runs from 5:00 the 8:00 p.m. >> arnold schwarzenegger made his first public appearance since the scandals broke. >> i'm going to run in 2012. i'm going to run for president of the national body building association. >> making a few jokes as he talked business and politics a at convention for executives of the american chamber of commerce. attendees laughed but some questioned his presence. >> people actually did not come to this because they were upset about that. but you know what, he's a politician and made an awful mistake. >> the choice of having him as a speaker was prior to the news that came out about his own

could be another wild ride while at the same time urging consumers not to panic. we caught up with some of the traders going into work. this is part of the ups and downs of the stock market and that consumers should try not to get caught up. easier said than done. people worried about about high unemployment, the sluggish economy and the real possibility of a double dip recession. consumers and corporations are holding on to what cash they have. really unconvinced the government and federal reserve have any requested how the reinvigorate the economy. some say prudence is the most reliable way to navigate this unstable market. >> over the long term the stock market has been valley atile. i look at this as a bump in the road. i don't see any reason to panic. >> reporter: we've been talking about this all morning, one thing that will likely factor in

today is the monthly jobs report issued about by the federal government. while the number of jobs added is up and the unemployment rate is down very slightly, it may still not be good enough to inspire a big come a back. but that is of course something we'll have to wait and see as the day goes on. >> thank you, kimberly. really watching the numbers fluctuate. the labor department said 117,000 new jobs were created last month. scott has more. >> i have a question for you. so did the economy, hau remark add jobs in the month of july? you said plus 117. >> right. >> the answer is no, it didn't. even though the labor department says 117 thousand jobs were added to the pay roll it's a net negative because the economy adds 125,000 to the economy every month. so that is one of the things affecting wall street as we
