bay, doing all right with sensors northbound. but at the 237 interchange with matilda. you'll have construction for another 45 minutes likely and watch that interchange. 237 at 101 is looking all right. as i turn over here, that's really the only sticking point. as you get out of the south bay to the summit there may be activity. sounds like a deer has been hit. >> thank you, mike. >> our top story is traffic. a ramp to southbound interstate 80 near the coliseum remains shut down right now while oakland and emeryville police search for a man who crashed near the 66th avenue off ramp following a high-speed chase. christie smith joins us live from oakland with the latest on the search for the man who was driving that car. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. i wanted to start saying they just hooked up the car involved in all of this and towed it out of here. and oakland police left as well. i spoke with oakland police, got an update. what they are saying is that after quite a search, maybe 30

minutes or so. it looks like the man they were looking for ultimately slipped away. what happened is that this started as a pursuit near high street and the man just for whatever reason wouldn't stop. they are saying he got on 880 southbound, exited at 66th avenue which is where we are. went across 66th here and then crashed onto southbound 880, the on ramp there. and that's when oakland police started a very intense search for this person. they called in help from the chp. also emeryville police came out here, they brought a dog and again, looked for maybe 20, 30 minutes. they are saying that looks like he just slipped away. they had a vague description of a man in a hoody so at this point looks like everything is wrapped up. when we last checked in with you, the on ramp here at southbound 880 was shut down and

it has been reopened. so, that's the latest from here. reporting live in observe land, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> christie smith reporting, thank you. we'll check back with you later. >> it's 5:01. vallejo police are looking for a suspect who shot and killed a 28-year-old man while he was driving his suv. it happened just before 8:40 last night at the intersection of sonoma boulevard and mini drive. police found a ford explorer rolled over on the center divide. investigators found joseph mace peter inside. he was dead when they arrived. officers are searching the parking lot of the gas station for evidence. this is vallejo's 12th homicide of the year. >> seven gang members are accused of conspiracy, murder and racketeering. three members also charged with four murders in san francisco back in 2008. a father and two sons were among

those killed. closing arguments expected to last all week with jury deliberations beginning a week from today. >> a narrow escape for two san francisco women overnight. firefighters pulled them from a burning home late last night. marla tellez joins us live from the neighborhood with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it all happened in this home here, this is jackson and octavia and the pacific heights neighborhood. showing you the bedroom window where the women were rescued from. window was or, the cc1: still open this morning and a cigarette could be to blame. firefighters got the call for this one-alarm fire at 11:30 last night. the battalion chief said they were dealing with a lot of smoke a1: race against time. the call that came in said two people were trapped inside, cc1: unaccounted for so. crews used a lad tear get to the top floor. they found two women, bot

unconscious with severe burns. one woman sin her 80s, the other is said to be her caregiver in her 60s. >> units got in quick, knocked the fire down, brought them out and we're hoping for the best at the hospital for their condition. >> both women are in the hospital treated for smoke inhalation and serious burns. the bedroom and the roof suffered the brunt of the cc1: damage. the official cause of this nvestigation -- the officialcc: cause is under investigation i should say. but firefighters say it seems that the fire did start in the top floor inside the bedroom, and it may have been caused by lit cigarettes. i want to show you what's left from the scene. the firefighters have left but take a look at this. just a pile of burned out furniture. you can identify easily a chair, a table, even a hat belonging to these women who live in this home. we have put calls in to the san francisco fire department to get

the latest on their condition. >> thank you very much, marla. this morning investigators are asking for help in solving a deadly stabbing at popular san jose park. stabbed to a mancc1: death at roosevelt park sunday morning before 3:00 a.m. they are not sure at this point if it was gang relate ordinary random act of violence. the coroner's office has not released any information on the: victim. this is san jose's 28th homicide this year. >> pleasanton police will hold a news conference to announce a break in a more than 20-year-old homicide case.cc1: representatives from the fbi and alameda county district attorney's office will be on hand to announce arrest in the case. there are no immediate details which cold case was possibly solved. >> time to check back that weather outside. let's toss it to christina loren. >> 52 degrees we're looking pretty good. we expect the fog to develop, really start to settle in. especially near the coast.

sort of back towards that point in time as investors are getting their first chance to react to s&p's downgrade of the u.s. credit rating which happened friday night once markets were closed. s&p cut the u.s. from aaa to aa cuts 1: warns furthercc could come if the government doesn't take significant steps. asian markets fell 2%. europe is lower with a couple hours left to go. the european central bank is taking steps to try to keep that region's debt crisis from spreading. oil is sliding, below $84 a gold consider add safe laven investment is trading above $1700 an ounce, $1709 an ounce. that's another record high. many big banks say they have been expecting the downgrade so the impact on the bond market should be small and shouldn't force mutual funds to have to sell assets. they say people will continue to

e'll look down southbound, 680: through sunol and smooth as you come into the south bay. another blip for 87 southbound. typical, shifting traffic as things pick up so we'll watch these averages. construction going on. 237 at matilda. keep that in mind. and slowing southbound on 17 toward the summit. reports of a deer that was hit. we'll see if we have to close lanes. there is slowing but that's typical for that point of your commute.cc1: we'll track that. heading up the peninsula 101 as well as 280, clear flow but christina talking about the drizzle, so keep that in mind along the coast as well. earlier construction has cleared up. the the golden gate bridges, look at this, this low clouds and fog so you can't see much past the south tower. keep that in mind, the north bay may have issues but chp not reporting problems.

getting an early start of the work week. it's 5:22. >> work on airport projects across the country including cc1:al in the bay area gets back to business this morning. congress passed a temporary funding extension for the faa last week meaning 4,000 employees and 70,000 construction workers will return to stalled projects including the construction of a new air traffic control tower at oakland international and retrofitting in palo alto and livermore. the measure reauthorizes the faa to collect airline taxes which means prices could go up. congress has until september 16 to come up with a long term funding for the projects. you can double your rebates if you live in boon county. pg&e offering 4,000 for customers who make homes more energy efficient. san mateo county says it will match that. homeowners have to spend a lot more to improve to qualify.

weekend to aa plus. mean?does that cc1: because it's never happened before it's pretty much all speculation. what it will mean in the short-term is extreme anxiety on the financial markets, we could see some of the circuit breakers put into place after last year's flash crash come into effect this morning. also over the weekend the european central bank made it to per for spain and italycc1: borrow. those countries a much bigger credit rating than the united states. there's lots of political fallout. nobody is a winner, not president obama, not congress, not the tea party. we should point out, though, even with recent losses broadly speaking the markets are up a little less than 40% since president obama took office. you know, laura, you have to feel sorry for all of the potential millionaires and billionaires working at zynga and group upon. a few weeks ago the markets were hot. veryone ready for another ipo,: now not so much. the good mood may return but

laura. at this point investigators say this fire does not seem to be suspicious. hey say it may have startedcc1: from lit cigarettes. dramatic rescue. it happened about 11:30 last night. two women pulled from the top hole, we're on c1: jackson and octavia. and the pacific heights neighborhood. you can see the top floor here all three windows are open. now we're looking at video from the scene. again, the call came in at 11:30. the battalion chief said they heard reports that two women were trapped inside using a ladder crews found the women, one in her 80s, the other is her caregiver in her 60s. officials say both were unconscious and severely burned. >> we had them on oxygen, they alert.ot cc1: paramedics were working on them. one had burns on the body, the other one was being bagged with oxygen. >> reporter: both women are in the hospital this morning being

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of city hall. this means mayor lee will have a promise he made when he took that job. >> reporter: yes. he pledged not to run for a full term when he was appointed interim mayor in january. in about 3 1/2 hours inside the

department of elections in the building behind me in city hall interim mayor ed lee is expected to break that promise, file papers and announce his candidacy, ending weeks of speculation of will he or won't he. in an interview lee acknowledged that thinks back pedalling might be hard for people but he believes he is doing what is best for the city. at least one city supervisor is not happy with his change of heart, noting that's why she voted to appoint lee as interim mayor, because he promised not to run, a vote she now appears c 1:regret. lee says he will sit down with the supervisors who don't agree with this decision and try to explain himself. he might be asked to do that tonight at the castro theater with the nine other candidates, some of whom are on the board of supervisors. now that he's going to be in the race lee is considered the front-runner but not a shoo-in. a poll shows him with only 35%

>> welcome back everyone. live look outside. golden gate bridge this morning. hazy out there. cooler start especially for this time of the year. feels like fall. it's 5:42. >> a new law in missouri could have a ripple effect throughout the entire country. it limits how school teachers can use facebook. tracie potts is live in washington with all of the details. good morning, tracie. >> hi there, jon. good morning. did you know there are over 7.5 million california teenagers who are on facebook as young as 13. and we suspect many of them younger. so, this could have implications not just in missouri but in california and across the nation. here's how it started. a teenager in missouri interacting on line with a teacher turns out she was molested by her junior high teacher. they did an investigation and found 87 teachers there who lost

their licenses over a 4-year period because of inappropriate relationships, sometimes involving online communications. so a new law is scheduled to kick in in missouri at the end of this month that says teachers and students cannot communicate privately on line through social networks. you can post on a teacher's wall but you can't send private messages. the people who wrote this law probably don't know how facebook works because you can't really friend someone unless you send them a private communication. they are threatening to sue saying it violates first amendment rights of teachers and this hurts communication. students don't call their teachers any more. they e-mail or message them. the aclu says this is written so broadly it could even prevent teachers. they want to work out something

vita blue was out there. yeah. great to have him. looking here, this is not great to have. it's hopefully going to clear soon n. is the accident i told you about at the dublin interchange. the travel time, 17 minutes. building because of slowing right here around the altamont pass. that blip around airway which kind of always happens because of lane changes, and then the slowing right there at the dublin interchange itself. so watch it. as you approach you'll find the slowing. then past the dealerships to the interchange. it's in the middle lane. no major injuries. we're watching for that to be a factor. castro valley y looking nice. jackson to southbound 880, changes over the weekend. saw earlier slowing heading to the san mateo toll plaza. a live look west shows a smooth flow but a good number of cars to the peninsula, fog might be an issue along the coast. you guys look at this. here is the incline up from oakland to san francisco. it looks horrible but really it's moving fine.

over to you. >> it does look bad. good to know it's okay. new this morning coalition troops working to recover every last piece of the chinook helicopter. military says that troops secured the crash site and the investigation is ongoing. the exact cause of the crash has not been determined but u.s. officials believe insurgents shot down the helicopter as it rushed to help army rangers who had come under fire. this was the deadliest single incident for u.s. forces in the 10-year war. >> one of the men killed was a u.s. navy s.e.a.l. with strong ties to the bay area. kevin houston's father and relatives live in san jose. they reached period -- received word that houston was among the troops killed in eastern afghanistan. his family says the 36-year-old decided back in fifth grade he wanted to be a navy s.e.a.l. some family members found so lis in knowing that he died doing something that he loved.

>> welcome back. it's 5:54. a bay area sports personality creating an uproar after comments about a giants pitcher. tony bruno a radio host whose segment is on knbr tweeted, giants, bochy a c1: coward for having his illegal alien pitcher hit a guy since mighty frisco boys. that is where the tweet stops. bruno posted that comment after a brawl broke out between the giants and phillies on friday night. the fight started after giants reliever ramirez hit a phillies batter in the lower back. players fought for more than a minute. bruno removed the tweet and later apologized.

in the meantime, the "mercury news" reports a whistle-blower claims workers were concerned about retaliation if they raised safety concerns. a former welder tells the newspaper he was laid off when he complained about potentially explosive gas leaks. a pg&e spokesperson denied the accusation saying, quote, we encourage employees to bring things up because that's the only way we can be a safe company. >> jon? >> scott mcgrew says at&t is changing the way you access voice mail to avoid a news of the world like hack here. >> that's right. we showed t ed folks how hacker could get your voice mail. some cell phone companies don't require to you enter a pass code if you access voice mail from your own phone. what hackers are doing is using a program to spoof your cell phone number so the voice mail thinks it's you and allows you to listen. at&t will fix that requiring a pass word no matter what. this comes of course after the
