report any thefts immediately. the feds say they will keep the interest rates low to spark the economy. scott mcgrew joins us. how long will the lousy economy last? >> i shouldn't be able to make that, i can now. mid 2013. why do i say that? that's what the fed says. federal open markets committee announced they would keep the interest rates low didn't surprise anyone. kids in an economic class could have guessed that one. giving the time line, the best brains in washington think our suffering will last until at least summer of 2013 by the best guesses. the fed never gives a specific time line, at least it hasn't before now. what does that mean for, say, mortgage rates. so far not much of anything. mortgage rates fell to their lowest rates before they made the announcement. the announcement did have a strong effect on the stock market. what's the downside to all this?
5:26 am
two things. first, any time you ease monetary policy you run the risk of inflation. that hasn't been an issue so far. the concern is inflation will come fast, powerfully before anyone realizes what happens. secondly cheaper dollars mean higher gas prices. those go hand in hand. that's assuming one thing. there are two forces on gas prices. there's the demand. if demand stays low -- >> supply and demand. >> if demand is low because the economy is lousy, gas prices will stay low. if demand rises with these super, super cheap dollars, you will see very high prices of gas. >> everybody is looking for somebody to blame. >> it's the fed. >> 6:26, john. >> blame everywhere. still to come, tears after a brutal rape at a homecoming dance. will the suspect stand trial. a man made swampland, crews worked overnight to repair a water main break. we'll let you know if you'll

5:33 am
owner jan snyder says with the price of gold edging closer to $2,000 an ounce, yesterday closed close to $1800 an ounce. she says there is a downside to the spike. more and more illegitimate businesses are popping up and customers are getting scammed. >> a lot of this business now because of the price of gold are not licensed, not reporting, not taking id. >> reporter: she says the number one thing to keep in mind if you stop by one of these pawn shops is to make sure the business is licensed by the state of california, not just by the city. also the trend towards gold, laura, means there's often an increase in property crime. if you have expensive gold jewelry, it's a good idea to make sure it's safely stored. >> thank you very much, marla. 5:33 right now. we've got developing news out of the east bay this morning. police on the scene of a smash and grab burglary. take a look at the video coming into our newsroom.
