we see an easier build to the commu but still there. highway 4, speeds below 30 getting towards antioch, and bay point, slowing there, as well. as well as the accident on i go nearbia valley road. we still have the power pole down in the area by the hospital. >> and developing news we're following this morning. at&t wireless dealing with service outages in parts of the bay area, as well as the sacramento area. an at&t service rep tells us they have been working on it for about an hour now. they don't know how many customers are affected or what caused that outage. the time is 6:02, and this morning sources tell us oakland police are closing in on another suspect in the shooting death of a toddler. this as prosecutors file form murder charges against a man already in custody. court here in oakland at 9:00 this morning to get an attorney, and possibly enter a plea. now, if he were convicted on all of these charges, he could face life in prison. but those who know him say he would not hurt a child. the 26-year-old patroly was charged with murder in the drive-by shooting that killed 3-year-old carlos nava monday. it was a horrible shooting that has shaken east oakland area where neighbors have seen their share of violence. now, police say he shot at rival gang members monday afternoon, but instead hit and killed carlos. denard's prior convictions include grand theft and being a felon in possession of a gun. now, pit what looks pretty bad a woman who knows him, says she was his ex, says it's not the whole story. >> we're looking from the outside on in, it's like, he's guilty, he's guilty. but he's really not. i believe that in my heart.

>> the defendant, with callous disregard for the safety of everyone, wantonly shot the toddler as they walked home on a bustlinging street. >> reporter: the community continues to come out in support of little carlos and his family with memorial at the site over on 64th and international where the shooting happened. wanted to mention, to help his family, several businesses are holding a fund-raising car wash and barbecue. that is all day this saturday and sunday at that location, 64th and international. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, christie. it's 6:04 right now. a 32-year-old pacific woman is dead, mauled by her own pit bull. today, police hope a necropsy will tell them why that dog attacked. it happened inside 32-year-old door la napora's home yesterday afternoon. her husband came home to find their dog standing over his wife's body.

he got the pit bull outside along with another dog and called 911. the dog got loose while paramedics tried to revive his wife. >> the dog did, in fact, come out, come through the gate and start the to approach officers and first responders. the dog was covered in blood. two officers shot the dog three times. >> the woman died at the scene. animal control took the surviving dog into custody. police say the male dog that attacked had not been neutered. police looking for a mother accused of kid dmapg her own kids. she may be on her way to mexico. she and an unknown friend allegedly kidnapped hernandez 5-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter from morgan hill sunday. they spent four days on the run before dropping the kids off unharmed at their grandmother's house. police say hernandez lost custody of her kids in june and does not have visitation rights. 6:05. new this morning, santa rosa police say robbers broke into an armored truck company and locked

employees inside. police are looking for the suspects this morning. but so far they don't have much to go on. "today in the bay"'s marla tellez is live with more on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this all happened in southwest santa rosa at the garda-armored car company. near stony point avenue. behind us, you can see plenty of the company's armored trucks lined up, parked behind the building. the armed robbery happened late last night. an employee called police about 10:45 saying the company had been robbed and he and another employee, so two employees total were locked inside by the suspects. by that point, though, the suspects had already taken off. detectives say they were armed and according to initial unconfirmed reports, they may have been carrying ak-47s. an unsettling thought, considering the company's location. >> the street that the business is actually on is a -- kind of a corporate business center. and -- but it's surrounded by

residential neighborhoods. some of the businesses are well-lit and others are not. >> reporter: now we're told the suspects got away with some money. how much, police are not saying. as for those employees who were locked inside here, police say they are not hurt, and, of course, they are being interviewed by police this morning. now, police say at least two suspects are still on the loose this morning, and a $2500 reward is being offered for information leading to their arrest. of course, if you have any information, you're asked to call santa rosa police. laura. >> pretty brazen. california supreme court putting a stop to a man to dismantle redevelopment agencies. it says the plan might be legal. that means the agencies will continue to exist while the case is penneding in court. if the court decides california must keep the agencies running it will put a $1.7 billion hole in the state's budget. this year alone, a $400 million shortfall will be coming in some

years in the future. the state budget already in jeopardy this year after july's revenue fell more than $500 million short of those expectations. 6:07. let's take a look at the forecast for today. the all-important weekend with meteorologist christina loren. >> the weekend just couldn't come soon enough for us this week. we're looking really good, hopefully you are looking forward to the weekend as well. we've got some really nice weather in store for you all weekend long. temperatures are going to be right about where they should be or even a little bit below and then we continue to drop off as we head through next week. this morning, we do have a little bit of drizzle coming down in areas south of san jose. and we could see a little bit of drizzle right at the coast, but we're just not picking that up on our radar just yet. now, as we head throughout the remainder of the afternoon into today and tonight, temperatures are going to be a little bit cooler in some spots by the coast. but a little bit warmer inland today with less cloud cover moving all that far inland. so what that means for us, as we head throughout the day, that fog will burn off quite a bit earlier. inland locations, it's going to

t welcome back to "today in the bay." a picturesque shot of the golden gate bridge. lovely out there. a little foggy, but traffic running smoothly. we'll check that traffic and weather coming up at 6:13. new this morning, staggering numbers showing one in five high school students in california will not make it to graduation day. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live in san jose and is

crunching numbers and what they mean for bay area kids. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the class of 2010 thinned significantly between their freshman and senior years statewide. the california department of education just released new numbers that show that roughly, as you were just saying, one in five high school students throughout the state dropped out of high school during those four years. we want to take a look at your tv screen, here in our neck of the woods, the south bay and east bay pretty much mirrored that trend. when you head up the peninsula and into san francisco, the dropout rates drop, only about one in ten students quit school over the four years. and break it down by race, this is again statewide. african-americans most likely to drop out, their rate was 30% followed by latinos, whites and asians. there are many reasons behind these dropout rates. in some instances, it goes all the way back to third grade. students in some cases are so far behind in their reading skills then, they never catch

up, and then they just give up hope and quit. some spanish-speaking students never transition to english. they drop out. and then there's the economy. some families pressure their children to drop out so they can get a job to support the household. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. skpron laura, back to you. >> sad. thank you very much, bob. let's check things out on the weather. >> let's jump to the seven-day forecast. it's so nice. hit that chime. good morning to you, 85 degrees on saturday there it is. 82 degrees on sunday. whenever it comes to the weekend, we like to take a good look at what's coming up ahead. now, this morning, we've got some fog out there. that could slow you down a little bit. watch out for that. clear conditions, otherwise inland. we're looking really, really good all across the board when it comes to places like fairfield, concord, livermore. i don't think you'll start out with mostly cloudy conditions this morning. in santa rosa, though, we've got about, yeah, just a half mile of

visibility and dropping to about eight miles in novado. expecting the fog to become worse before it gets better, especially in the city of san francisco. 54 degrees right now. you just saw that live picture of the golden gate bridge, and the fog wasn't actually all that deep just yet. but it's over the next couple of hours where we really have to watch for reduced visibilities. and, of course, mike and myself are all over that for you. 57 in san jose by 8:00 a.m. we don't bump up your numbers all that much, just a couple degrees and you kind of stay put right at the coast. 56 degrees in san francisco at 8:00 a.m. we stop the clock for you yet again at noon and temperatures inland down in the south bay, take a look at this treat you'll get on your lunch break. 70 degrees in sunnyvale, 70 in san jose, and round out the day with temperatures on the warm side in the east bay regions in particular. but really comfortable second half of the day right along the coastline. all right, here it is, o more time. plan those outdoor activities. we've got a great-looking weekend ahead for you. temperatures below their

as well. that's friday kickoff, so we have the backups for friday. >> thank you very much, mike. the suspects who broke into an armored truck company and locked two employees inside. it happened overnight in santa rosa where marla tellez joins us with the latest on the investigation. pretty brazen robbery. >> reporter: very aggressive. good morning, laura. the company is called gar garda-armored car company in southwest santa rosa. at this point, employees are starting to arrive this morning. i had the chance to talk to a couple of them. one of them tells me this place opened right after 9/11. he is stunned by this entire incident, because it's never been robbed before. he says while it is an international company, it's certainly a small employee staff here, only about 16 employees work inside this building. now, santa rosa police got the call from an employee about 10:45 last night. the employee told police he and another employee, so a total of

two employees, were both locked inside by the suspects, and the company had just been robbed. a responding sergeant explains what police found when they arrived. >> we arrived, we had to free the employees, because the doors were locked, secured. and once we freed the employees, we found they were unharmed. >> reporter: officials say the suspects were armed and they may have been carrying ak-47s. that has not been confirmed yet. now, detectives say the suspects got away with some money, but say it's not clear how much money. and according to the company website, gardaoffers, quote, a complete range of cash-handling services, including traditional armored transportation valuables. now, police say at least two suspects are still on the loose this morning, and a $2500 reward is being offered for information leading to their arrest. of course, if you have any information about this brazen robbery here in southwest santa rosa, you're asked to call santa rosa police.

laura? >> yeah, pretty amazing there. thank you very much, marla. two people police say are responsible for hundreds of thefts up and down the peninsula are behind bars this morning. police have arrested 21-year-old travis casianos and jenny montani, accused of pulling off a string of burglaries in belmont. belmont police teamed up with san mateo detectives to arrest the suspects. victims of recent burglaries are being called to identify dozens of items recovered by the detectives. laura, we are following new developments this morning in the shooting death of a toddler in oakland. sources tell us oakland police are closing in on another suspect. this as prosecutors file formal murder charges against a man already in custody. 9:00 this morning. after he was charged yesterday in connection with a horrible drive-by shooting that killed a approximate 3-year-old boy on the streets of oakland this monday. now, those who know denard say despite a history of violence in east oakland, they don't think he could commit such a horrible crime. denard appeared in court yesterday, but did not enter a plea in connection with the daytime drive-by shooting that killed 3-year-old carlos nava. he was with his family near a pizza shop. this was broad daylight, when someone opened fire. police say the intended target was actually two rival gang members. according to court records, denard was convicted of grand theft in 2004, and also convicted of being a felon in possession of a gun. it all sounds pretty bad, but friends and family say he's no killer. >> he's a good guy. he's really a good guy. with my daughter with his daughter, he's a good dad, he's a good guy.

>> lawrence denard pulled out a gun, fired at a young child, and killed and murdered a young child. that's enough of lawrence denards on the city of oakland. >> reporter: police continue to look for at least one more suspect, and may be close to an arrest. but they do believe that denard is the shooter. this has really shaken up that neighborhood in east oakland where baby carlos was shot. police are saying that clearly people are touched by this oftentimes with homicides they don't get very many witnesses to come forward. but that is not the case in this shooting. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much for the update. 6:35 now. the man accused of a 1984 murder in pleasanton is talking this morning. steven carlson told "the contra costa times", i may be a dirt bag but i didn't hurt nobody, unquote. carlson is accused of stabbing

14-year-old tina fails to death. he was 16 years old at the time. carlson and she both attended foot hill high school. he told the feds he saw her on campus but didn't know her personally. he says he doesn't know why he is being charged. he thinks police are blaming him because he has a criminal record and is close to that case. well, it is friday. my question is, are we going to enjoy a spectacular weekend, ms. loren? >> i don't know. what are your plans? what are you doing? really depends. if you're going to be outside, if you want something spectacular to happen, at least the weather will accommodate your plans. we're looking really good. we have some fog out there right now. but our marine layer, especially in this area, the bay area, not deep enough to generate that drizzle. we're noticing that drizzle, though, just offshore near monterey. so watch out for that. we could see this moiz tour start to creep up. i think if we see drizzle, the most likely location will be santa cruz, over the santa cruz mountains. this is where we are right now, 60 degrees in hayward, forget about that jacket in hayward this morning, might need it in places like santa rosa, at 50

degrees. 54 for san francisco, and 55 in oakland. as we head throughout the day tow today, i think by about 7:00 a.m., 61 degrees, a fair amount of cloud cover at that time inland. but starting to clear by noon, completely clear conditions, 75. and you'll swing out the day at about 84 degrees. really comfortable in places like los gatos. 77 in redwood city, 80 in san francisco. the seven-day forecast, your weekend forecast, locked, loaded, ready to go. we'll show you in a minute. but first, if you've got to get out the front door right now, mike is a busy man on a get-away friday. >> at least i'm still here, though. made it to work smoothly. i have a warning for folks getting to work, highway 4 with the slow down. speeds down near 10 miles per hour. pretty heavy slowing all the way towards allen, also slowing in bay point, watch 680 show slowing in the next half hour. we're watching this accident in walnut creek, as well. eastbound, a lane block as you head east away from the freeway on ignacio valley road, traffic in the area, and also a power

and >>ó8 for 80, south bay. 101 through 680 and also downtown, the katy perry concert are congestion out of pleasanton and livermore, as well. >> get the idea mike is a katy perry fan. school districts where nearly half the students fail to graduate from high school. but new data collected here in california shows, yes, in fact, it is happening right here in the bay area. bob redell has been breaking down all of the numbers this morning and joins us live. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. between their freshman and senior years, the class of 2010 thinned dramatically, significantly in the state of california. the department of education in the state just release the new numbers that show roughly one in five students throughout the state dropped out of high school during those years. look at your tv screen. here in our neck of the woods, the south bay and east bay mirrored that trend, generally speaking. it's a little bit better off the peninsula and only one in ten students quit school over the four years.

we're here at william c overfelt high school and east side union high school district of san jose. we came here because the dropout rate during that time was pretty bad. it was around 24.5%. so you are looking at one in four students during that time dropping out of high school. principal kiala, you have been here during that time. why is the rate so high? >> we attribute a lot to poverty, hard conditions. this is not just a school issue. i see this as a societal issue. schools with their lack of funding are really having difficulty trying to get these students to turn their lives around. >> reporter: is it hopeless? is there something that can be done, given the state of affairs today? >> i think there's two things. one, for us, these aren't just numbers, these are real students' lives, we see them every day, we know their struggles, what they're going through. and i think if our society really invested not just in public schools, but really in supports for these poverty students in need, i think we could make a difference. but until we're willing to as a society make that investment, i can we're going to continue to see this kind of numbers. >> reporter: and given what's going on in our economy, with

budgets, it doesn't seem like there's anything in the near-term. does that jive with what you're hearing? >> well, i agree with that. i'll tell you, it's inspirational to see the hard work of the teachers and staff at a school like over felt where they're really trying hard to get students to turn their lives around. and when you look the other way, for every one that drops out, there are three that are overcoming struggles, overcoming obstacles and really making their way in the future, graduating, ready for college, going to college. changing their lives. it's going to take a lot of hard work. we're not willing to give up. we're going to keep doing that. >> thank you very much. appreciate your hard work, as well. >> thank you. >> reporter: reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. john and laura. >> thank you for the update. 6:51 right now. the people blind the lafayette memorial to soldiers killed in iraq and afghanistan is too big to maintain. it can be seen from highway 24. there are about 4,000 crosses,

why it turned off cell service at the civic center station. here's the deal. it beefed up security and then turned off the service after rumors surfaced protesters might disrupt train service during last night's rush hour. people protesting the death of passenger charles hill by b.a.r.t. police filed this -- filled the station july 11th. b.a.r.t. says it realizes turning off the cell service is an inconvenience for many, but it's not something the agency does or plans to do on a regular basis. police in london, england just opened a murder investigation linked to this week's riots, a man attacked while he tried to put out a fire died at a hospital thursday. crowds attacked monday night. and police released video of a man they want to talk to in connection to the 68-year-old man's death. he is the fourth person to die from the roy yoiots this week. students clogged the streets of santiago chile overnight. police ended up spraying the crowd with water cannons there.
