>> starting early. >> warming up out there. >> look forward to it. first, let's begin with the heated gop debate in iowa. chuck todd, nbc's political director and chief white house correspondent, is is in des moines for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the final debate without texas governor rick percy is going to be known as the one where the phrase "minnesota nice" got turned on its head, michele bachmann and tim pawlenty realizing their political lives will be on the line, went at each other like nobody's business. >> i need to respond to that. >> reporter: former minnesota governor tim pawlenty and congresswoman michele bachmann sparred bitterly, each trying to gain political advantage in iowa, hoping it will translate into a win in tomorrow's critical ames straw poll. >> her record of accomplishment and results is nonexistent. >> i introduced the life bulb freedom of choice about.

>> she has a record of misstating and making false statements. >> you said the era of small government was over. that sounds a lot more like barack obama, if you ask me. >> reporter: but pawlenty didn't stop at bachmann and this time decided not to pass a up a chance at mitt romney, while resurrecting a word pawlenty used in comparing romney's massachusetts health care plan to the president's. obamney care. >> for mitt to say there aren't substantial similarities or aren't essentially the same plan is incredible. >> reporter: he instead tried to stay focused on president obama. >> that's because our president simply doesn't understand how to lead and how to grow on economy. >> reporter: all eight candidates agreed on one thing, no new taxes. went asked if they would walk away from a plan that would raise taxes but cut ten times more in spending, every hand went up. former speaker newt gingrich seemed more intent on attacking his former fox news colleague,

repeatedly bristling at what he called "gotcha" questions. >> too much attention paid by the press corp. of the campaign minutia and not enough paid by the press doer the bisic ideas to distinguish us from barack obama. >> reporter: the audience boo'd when bachmann was asked if as president she would be submissive to her because as she suggested that god commands. >> it means respect. >> reporter: for romney, the debate of the day may have actually come earlier, when he took on a handful of democratic hecklers. >> hold on a second. hold on a second. i'm not going to raise taxes. that's my answer. i'm not going to raise taxes. and if you want somebody that can raise taxes you can vote for barack obama. >> reporter: as for the president, he got fired up speaking at a factory in michigan. >> there's been a lot of talk in washington right now that i should call congress back early. >> reporter: slamming congress for bickering and what he called

folks playing political games. >> the last thing we need is congress spending more time arguing in d.c. >> reporter: today is all about preparing for the straw poll. tim pawlenty, michele bachmann going to the iowa state fair, but they're going to have company. sarah palin rolls into town, makes an appearance at the state fair. we'll see if she shows up at the straw poll tomorrow. lester? >> chuck todd this morning. thanks. michele bachmann is in west des moines this morning, with us exclusively. congresswoman, good morning. nice to have you with us. >> good morning, lester. >> as we saw governor pawlenty really went after at you on the question of experience, i'd like to tee off our conversation with a little of what he said and then get your response. here it is. >> she fought for less government spending. we got a lot more. she led the effort against obama care, we got obama care.

she led the effort against t.a.r.p. we got t.a.r.p. if that's your view of effective leadership with results, please stop, because you're killing us. >> to his point you came in office with someone with a fresh voice, a clear mandate. can you name an instance where you have moved the needle, where you have significantly altered the outcome of a particular debate? >> i certainly have. whether it was on the t.a.r.p. debate or whether it was on obama care. in particular now on the last two months when i've been the leading voice, almost the lone voice in the wilderness of washington, fighting against raising the debt ceiling, people paid attention. >> but they didn't follow. >> and they recognize -- well, remember who has been running washington. it's president obama, nancy pelosi was the speaker of the house for the majority of the time that i was there, and harry reid. obviously they weren't interested in my pro-growth agenda. but that's when you fight. you don't fight when you're just in the majority. you fight when you're in the minority. i've been the champion for the

voice for people who have been crying for washington to stop spending so much money and reduce taxes. people aren't happy with this debt deal. and i'm very happy that i was the leading voice in not raising the debt ceiling. and i think standard & poor's and the stock market from proved me right in the last weeks. >> with regard to standard & poor's, you said they lowered our rating because we don't have the ability to pay our debts. in fact, what they said was the political brinksmanship made the government less stable, less effective, less predictable. if your view had prevailed, the debt ceiling had not been raised, wouldn't we be even in a deeper pickle with the rating agencies? >> i had introduced a plan together with colleagues that would not cause the default to occur, because, number one, if i'm part of the united states, this is what i would do. i would call all the members of congress back to washington immediately. i would say, look, we are getting this aaa credit rating back, we're going to announce to

the markets we are not going to default, and then we're going to make sure we pay the military, we pay senior citizens who are currently on entitlements, then right now, today, we're going to begin the process of reforming entitlements and reducing spending so our budgets balance. as president of the united states, i will only introduce balanced budgets and i will not increase the debt ceiling. that's what we need to do because that sends a signal to wall street we're serious, we're tough, we're going to get our financial house in order. i'm a private businessperson. we started our own company. i'm also a federal tax lawyer. one thing i know is that you cannot turn the economy around if you give barack obama a blank check for $2.4 trillion in exchange for $21 billion in a elusory cuts. washington has to be fundamentally restructured. this isn't working. >> you mentioned the term blank check. in fact, this raising the debt ceiling was for bills that had already been agreed to, not new spending. >> actually, that's not true.

this money will go not just to bills that have already been spent. this will be for future money as well. that's a false statement. >> let me ask you about -- we played a moment ago in chuck todd's story the jeers that resulted from the question about whether you would be submissive to your husband. you had made a statement earlier. are you happy the question was asked? did it need clarification? >> well, i was happy that i was able to talk about my wonderful husband. you know, chris wallace asked the question he asked. i certainly can't make comment about what question he asked. but i was happy to have the opportunity just to be able to talk about my wonderful family and my husband. >> the phrase "submissive to your husband." for some people it may raise some eyebrows when you first mentioned it. was it important to clarify it and do you think you did clarify your thoughts on that? >> oh, i think so. i think it's important to talk about respect. we've been married for 33 years, and the basis of our marriage is respect.

i'm just grateful to get that answer and that comment out. >> as you know, rick perry, the conservative governor of texas, is about to join the already crowded field of gop contenders. he comes from the same conservative cutout that you come from, but he also has the added executive of being a chief executive of a huge state like texas. how do you compete against him and how do you distinguish yourself from him to conservative members of the party? >> well, i've been in washington, d.c., now going on five years. and i have been a very consistent challenger to the unconstitutional policies that barack obama, speaker pelosi -- and i've been at the tip of the sphere on battle after battle. i understand the problems that the country is facing right now. i've worked in the private sector. i've created a business from scratch. i know what you have to do to create jobs. we need a president who has been a fighter and a champion on the issues that people want us to

turn away from. they want us to turn away from spending. i've been there. i've also stood up against my own party. i've stood on principle rather than party. i think that's what people are looking for. i have people -- i've been a voice for movements all across the country, whether it's disaffected democrats or independents or apolitical people. i've been bringing this voice and this movement into the halls of congress very successfully. and this voice hasn't been heard in the white house for a very long time. that's what i intend to do, take this very reasonable, fair-minded voice into the white house and finally get the economy turned around and focus on job creation. and i will repeal obama care. >> congresswoman bachmann, let me ask you about the "newsweek" cover photo this week. it caused quite a controversy. some people thought it was a cheap shot. you did not weigh in. you were not part of those questioning this. let me ask you this. what did you think when you first saw the picture and the title "queen of rage"?

>> well, you know, it really didn't impact me that much because over this last week the united states has received a punch to the gut. we've seen the stock market plunge over 1,500 points. we lost for the first time in the history of the country the aaa bond rating. when he had a tragic loss of life in afghanistan, unparalleled, and the president got a blank check for $2.4 trillion. that's not a good week. so a magazine photo is not even a factor in this. >> is rage an appropriate word to describe you? >> no, not at all. i'm a very happy person. i'm a very optimistic person because what i know to be true is that if we put the right policies into place, in the next quarter we will already be the beginnings of an economic turnaround. that's what i'm focused on. i love people. i really care about where people are at right now in the economy. so i want to focus on making their lives better and getting people back to work.

members of congress to cooperate rather than obstruct in those solutions. >> and axelrod defended the president's decision not to call congress back to work on the debt crisis. another whirlwind day on wall street has overseas markets wavering this morning. the dow surged up a promising 423 points on thursday but not enough to undo wednesday's nose dive. we'll get the latest now from the new york stock exchange and cnbc's melissa francis. melissa, good morning. >> good morning. we've seen the dow move more than 400 points four days in a row. that's the first time it's happened in its 115-year history. it changed direction eight days in a row. today we're watching for retail sales and consumer sentiment. we're also watching the tone out of europe, which has been mostly positive so far today. and gold dipping below $1,800 an ounce. back to you. >> thank you. another deadly day for international forces in southern afghanistan. a coalition service member died this morning in an ied attack.

in the meantime, the death toll from thursday's roadside bombing has risen to seven as two more nato service members have been confirmed dead now. at least five of the casualties on thursday were u.s. troops. a hypersonic glider that could have sped from california to new york in 12 minutes flat zooming along at 13,000 miles per hour is now lost. the unmanned aircraft was launched on a rocket thursday, and the $320 million taxpayer-funded project failed after nine minutes in the air. it was designed to be the fastest ever built and provided global defense capability. a mississippi army wife got a major surprise at a minor league baseball game. darla harlow thought she had been randomly selected to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. turns out it wasn't so random. that's her army major husband in the catcher's mask home from nine months in afghanistan and giving her the surprise, shall we say, shock of her life.

>> can't say. >> describe it as quick semiautomatic fire. it was, you know, pop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: but court documents shed new light on the doughertys' high-speed gun-blazing pursuit with police in colorado. these state troopers say they tailed the doughertys while facing round after round from an ak-47. investigators say lee grace told them she never fired a shot. her brother ryan was the driver, leaving half-brother dylan as the trigger man. >> lee grace seems to be very protective of her full biological brother. i think we're kind of seeing the nurturing, almost a mothering of lee grace as the oldest sibling, as the woman. >> reporter: investigators say lee grace told them, we weren't trying to hurt anyone. we just wanted them to get back. but after their car hit a guardrail, she admitted she had pulled a high-powered pistol on the local police chief. "i pointed the gun at the cop,

she said, "i deserved to get shot." and she was shot in the leg. she and her brothers taken into custody, the end to a eight-day nationwide manhunt. >> i don't think it will probably end well for us or for them. >> reporter: the alleged crime spree for the family fugitives began in florida with another high-speed shootout. >> fired several more shots at me. >> reporter: and was followed, say police, by a bank robbery in georgia. detectives believe this gun-wielding thief is lee grace. a posting on a flickr page says, she loved to shoot guys and wreck cars. i'm a redneck and proud of it. >> anytime you put a gun in someone's hand and they're willing to fire at police officers or willing to drive a car 120 miles an hour, this is a dangerous person. >> reporter: the oldest sibling in the dougherty gang is just 5'4" and 135 pounds. but like her brothers, police say she's a dangerous criminal who was ready to kill. according to a celebrity

details coming up. plus, is it an added learning tool or inappropriate? the problems that can arise when teachers friend their students on facebook. why one state has decided it is time to crack down. how much would you give up to be with the person you love? one of spain's wealthiest and most famous royals is set to marry. to do it she's agreed to give away her fortune worth $5 billion. we'll tell you her story coming up. >> in a moment, i guess. let's begin this half hour for search in clues in the bizarre disappearance of the missing maryland woman. nbc's janet shamlian is live in aruba with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. for people living there and tourists, it's almost beyond belief this is happening again so, similar to the natalee holloway disappearance. an american woman on vacation has gone missing. now, this time it's her travel companion, an american man, who is being held in a jail here. police are saying his story is very questionable. >> i'm ready for the fight.

i need to know where my friend is. >> reporter: christina jones says with every passing day she's more baffled by the bizarre disappearance of her best friend, robyn gardner. >> she's a half glass full girl, maybe a lit tool trusting. >> reporter: too trusting of this man, 50-year-old gary giordano, now under arrest in awry ba in connection with gardener's disappearance. >> my client has been detained as a suspect in a murder investigation. he did give the police all cooperation. >> reporter: the mystery began ten days ago when giordano called police in aruba to report his companion was missing. according to police, he claims the two were snorkeling together at baby beach, on the western tip of the caribbean island. but somehow they separated and the 35-year-old dental assistant never made it back to shore. giordano was arrested, although his lawyer says his client is innocent and says there's no evidence linking giordano to any crime.

>> detectives on this case know this woman has gone missing. they believe something terrible has happened to her. as of now, they don't have any proof of a homicide. >> reporter: giordano and gardner are from maryland and met last year on match.com. >> he has a history of domestic abuse, a rather controlling person who has violent tendencies. >> reporter: two former girlfriends filed restraining orders against giordano and ex-wife accused him of domestic violence. giordano was alleges convicted of shoplifting in 2003. another twist, gardner was already in a relationship with richard forester. he says he had no idea she was in aruba with another man. >> you say that that has to be -- >> reporter: thursday on "today" he insisted the story just doesn't add up. >> she's never been a fan of snorkeling. she said she may do it but not interested. she is a swimmer but would prefer to be in a swimming pool. >> reporter: now the fbi has gotten involved in the investigation, conducting interviews in the u.s. it's all eerily reminiscent of teenager natalie holloway's

disappearance from these very same shores six years ago. in a statement, robyn's family said, we can only pray that she will soon be with us and bring back the joy into our lives. she means the world to us. we are hoping for the very best outcome with the help of the international community. >> you never know how much you're loved until you're missing, right? a lot of people love robyn. >> reporter: authorities have scaled back the search for robyn gardner, at least in the waters where she is said to gone missing. meanwhile, gary giordano can only be held for eight days before charges are filed or he's released. we're expecting some type of hearing within the next few days. back to you. >> janet shamlian reporting there from aruba. thank you, janet. it is 7:34. here's lester. thank you. the famous fugitive who became known as barefoot bandit has inked a million dollar movie deal. but 20-year-old coalton harris moore says he will not see any of that movie.

aditi roy is has the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. the man known as barefoot bandit remains here at the federal detention center in seattle. for years he stole from others. now he says he has decided to agree to make a movie in order to make a mends. his story reads like a hollywood screenplay, and now the barefoot bandit's life of crime is one step closer to hitting the big screen. the young man behind the folklore, 20-year-old colton harris moore, is speaking out for the first time from prison, in a statement released through his attorney he says, "i can't undo what i did. i can only try to make this better." harris moore says he has agreed to sell the rights of his story for $1.2 million only if all of the could go towards paying back his victims. >> i think he'll feel morally relieved. he has tremendous remorse. >> reporter: in his statement from jail, harris-moore writes, "i am humbled to know that i can now help the people i hurt. i have absolutely zero interest

in profiting from any of this and i won't make a dime off of it." harris-moore pleaded guilty to seven felony charges in june. prosecutors have said he owes more than a million dollars in damages. >> he won't make any money. he never wanted to. and neither will his family. >> reporter: harris-moore's life of crime began when he was a teen in washington. breaking into neighbors' homes and local businesses, often barefoot where he would steal cash, bikes, cars, even airplanes. his two-year crime spree prompted a manhunt that crossed state line, canada, and the bahamas. in his most infamous theft, harris-moore, who taught himself to fly, stole a plane and flew it to the bahamas where authorities finally caught him after a dramatic high-speed boat chase. >> i think the sheer outrageousness of some of the crimes makes it interesting. >> reporter: in his statement, harris-moore says he hopes to

ever happened. saying, it's a frivolous lawsuit entirely without merit. in fact, the police report following in the argument last august says the victim said she was not injured, not fearful, and that the lamp fell on her foot. she did say he gave her an open hand smack on the right side of her face but even that, a spokesman says, is completely false, a blatant attempt to shake down a very wealthy man. there's no dispute that the former soap opera star and the twice divorced sorros dated on and off and sometimes jet set we'd the super rich for five years. though they never lived together she says it was a serious and meaningful relationship, and that when he refused to buy her either of two apartments she wanted, one for $2 million and the second for 4.$4.43 million, she ended up hurt and embarrassed and on antidepressants. >> it could be whatever they rant. >> reporter: ferreyr, still

back now at 7:45. the bust of a large-scale baby selling ring. prosecutors say a prominent california attorney and two associates lined up surrogate mothers and then sold their unborn babies for $100,000 each. now the group has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. nbc's george lewis is in los angeles with the details. george, good morning. >> good morning, natalie. at least a dozen babies were sold illegally according to prosecutors by attorney theresa erickson and two others involved in the conspiracy. erickson who practices law in the san diego area is well-known to many parents who have had their children via surrogate mothers. she calls herself the surrogacy

lawyer and she's used youtube and radio to advise people on how to connect with surrogate mothers and the agencies that handle these cases. >> it's important to ask questions, slow down, think about what you're getting into, and speak with a lawyer or your physician before you sign an agreement. >> reporter: to be legal, the prospective parents and surrogate mother have to sign the agreement before the surrogate gets pregnant. but erickson was charged with flouting the law, illegally selling babies. >> i felt like my entire world was turned upside-down. i was devastated. i was upset, shocked, to say the least. >> reporter: this woman who wants to be known only as heather was one of the surrogates flown by teresa erickson to a fertility clinic in ukraine to have embryos implanted in her uterus. prosecutors say these women were told they would be paid $38,000 to $40,000 by the end of their pregnancies and assured everything was strictly legal. but prosecutors say it wasn't. >> this was a way of essentially

creating inventory of unborn babies and then selling them at a later date. >> i regret the fact that i got involved with criminals. >> reporter: heather who cooperate with the fbi and did not give the child to the surrogacy agency had the baby, a little girl, and arranged for a friend who had been unsuccessful at getting pregnant, to adopt the child. the friend, alyssa, says she and her husband are so lucky to have their new daughter. >> she is truly a blessing. she is outgoing and happy as she really ever has a frown on her place. >> reporter: 1400 couples a year in this country turn to surrogate mothers to bear their children. people who run surrogacy agencies say this case has blighted the whole field. >> there are so many people that are looking to do a good, honest professional job for people that need their help. and here's somebody that took

this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. it's 7:56 right now. i'm laura garcia cannon. this morning, the man accused of firing the shot that killed a toddler in oakland is behind bars, and will appear in court later today. oakland place say 26-year-old lawrence denard was aiming for two rival gang members outside a pizza restaurant monday when a stray bullet hit 3-year-old carlos nava. courtney morris says she is lawrence denard's ex girlfriend, suspect she believes he didn't do it. >> he's a good guy. he's really a good guy with my daughter, with his daughter, he's a good dad. he is a good guy. we're looking from the outside on in, it's like he's guilty, but he's really not. i believe that in my heart. >> that is not the picture painted of denard from the superior court documents obtained by nbc bay area.

accused on going a crime spree is behind bars this morning. lee grace dougherty and her brothers dylan and ryan made their court appearance on thursday one day after the colorado police nabbed them. lee grace told them she deserved to get shot in the leg as she ran from police. investigators in london say they've charged almost 600 people with crimes in connection with those deadly riots. and they're using some very modern methods to track down the suspects. nbc is in london this morning with more. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. well, for days smart phones and social networks were used by those rioters to coordinate their violence. now british authorities are turning that into even high technology against those rioters. across the country, a massive dragnet. police raids on suspected ring leaders and looters have led to more than 1500 arrests.

others her age has known to spend up to four hours a day on facebook. >> i probably have about 400 facebook friends, and most of them are people that i had met face to face. >> reporter: but just over two years ago when she was a junior in high school she got an unexpected friend request, from her teacher. >> i didn't think anything of it because i wasn't a stranger. it was someone i knew, someone i trusted. >> reporter: and it was that trust in him that took the relationship to a different level. the conversations became about more than just math class. >> i remember that we were talking online one night and had to fix the situation that was going on at home. when i came back i was crying and i was really upset. and he could tell. and he asked me what was wrong. i kind of opened up and told him what was going on, how misunderstood i felt, how alone i felt, and that's when it kind of all started to change into a more flirtatious atmosphere. >> reporter: the relationship

became physical, and the communication moved from the computer to her teacher's home. alecia knew she was in trouble. >> i hated myself because i knew i was smarter than that. but at the same time, being understood by someone finally for once in four or five years, it was nice. and that's probably what kept me going over there. >> reporter: after a few months alecia put an end to the relationship and reported her teacher to the authorities. he got sentenced to probation for 18 months and had to register as a sex offender. >> i don't understand why somebody would do that to someone else. i don't understand why you would take a vulnerable teenage girl who already has self-esteem issues and bring her down to that point. >> reporter: and although alecia'is story is treextreme, s

more common than you might think. a magazine poll said 59% of facebook friends are teachers. >> boundaries are blurred and disappear. the student-teacher relationship that is very dangerous. >> reporter: now lawmakers are getting involved. this month, the state of missouri passed a law that includes limiting the amount of contact teachers can have online with students. >> it identifies only one narrow area that we prohibit and that is hidden communication where parents, third parties, school personnel, can not monitor it. >> reporter: for her part, alecia believes the new legislation in missouri is the right idea. >> it takes away one medium that these predators have to get their victims to speak privately with them and gain that confidence. >> we reached out to the

american federation of teachers to get their response to new legislation and the officials there declined to comment. ann is the editor in chief of "seventeen" magazine. interesting topic, haven't given it a lot of thought until hearing this story. we heard one state has moved to restrict these kinds of online communications between students and teachers. the fact is a lot of other places, a lot of other schools almost encourage this kind of networking as a benefit to both parties. can you put the toothpaste back in the tube here? >> the short answer is no. 59% of all our readers say they're facebook friends with their teachers. and you have to ask yourself why. 95%, 99% of the time it's completely legitimate reasons. they want homework help. it's easy to get a question answered. it's sort of interesting to see that your teacher is a person. it's like when you run into them

in the grocery store, oh, my gosh, they have a life. >> it would have freaked me out. >> it's the same thing with the facebook, you can see that the teacher had gone to the movies, a family picnic. >> what stories are you hearing from your readers? >> that's where it turns interesting. girls don't understand where the boundaries are when they're teenagers. they are still learning about how all of this works together. to have your teacher in the same context as your friend gets very murky. the friending can turn into flirting and worse. >> caroline, how do you communicate to the kids and what else does this open up? >> yeah, i think that -- i mean, that is a really terrible story. a lot of creepy stuff going on out there. but i really think for the most part a lot of the teachers using social media in the classroom are using it as a teaching tool, to help their kids -- help their students learn, you know, the 21st century skills that are going to make them competitive in a digital world. i think that that's really for

the most part that's what teachers are saying this story was framed with the idea of a sexual predator. when you have this kind of communication going on, perhaps for good purpose, is there a fear that what started out with good intentions can cross the line that no one intended it to? >> i think they need to talk to their kids about cautions that you talk to your kids about in the real world can happen online. if a teacher says let's have a private conversation or someone says let's, you know, not tell anyone about this conversation, there's a red flag. >> the school is going to have to revisit this question now and like missouri, to begin to restrict some of these communications? >> the most important thing is to make sure that everybody is well educated about what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. it starts with the teen aagers because you can't monitor every single communication that your child is having online. but you need to help them understand where those lines

>> this is really about stretching your dollar, as well, because it's about finding not just for one season but really making them work for many seasons. >> yes, absolutely. one of the things that i think is important is that you can find value in a piece depending on the weight of the fabric. that's the ideal. if it's something light enough to wear in summer you also want it to be something you can layer into fall. that's not always the piece that you would expect. so let's take a look. we have, by the way, two different ways to wear three items that you've picked for us. one for summer, one for fall. you're going to show us how to transition it the right way. first starting off with patterned pants, which is going to be a big trend, i think, for fall, as it has been for the summer as well. >> it's not just about the patterned pant. let me show you. it's about the relaxed pant. a lot of people, i know you might not think this is a transitional easy piece to wear. but it absolutely is. especially for summer where you can pair this with a tank and it becomes sort of like that a la, jungle safari effect. this is not difficult to wear. this kind of relaxed wrap band is like a sarong pant.

very, very, easy, even if your carry weight in your midsection, and especially if you drape this, this is an a deal shape. even on a little petite girl like we have here. >> like jessica. >> yes. easy lightweight pant. now, if you can see the after. >> look for fall. >> we dressed this up a little bit for evening. and this is why it works for fall. you can put it tight under here. you can wear this with a trench coat on top. it's still a lightweight pant but the fact is once you transition it from casual to more evening, sophisticated look, you really get more wear. you can stretch this not only into two seasons but into two styles. >> i love it. it looks like a whole new different look. >> isn't it great? >> thank you, ladies. both of you. >> i don't want people to be afraid of a pattern pant. >> shouldn't be because they look great. next we're going to talk about the cardigan. here we say megan with a summer look. >> we always talk about this for summer. the cardigan is important as a layering piece. they're in. they never go out.

firing up now in thedwest.oies we're looking at a little wet weather down through parts of western texas. that's going to knock the temperature down a little bit. beautiful weather. 75 in seattle. 81 and sunshine in portland. look for beautiful weather in the northeast as well. risk of strong storms from the plains all of the way down into the central mississippi ri taking a live look at alcatraz, you can actually see the fog moving. it's starting to burn off a little bit. it's actually pretty thick over some spots, especially across the water. overall, i think we're going to lose all of this cloud cover by 10:30, maybe even 11:00 a.m. today. foggy conditions lasting through the first part of the day but drizzle is mostly staying to our south. that's great news if you're planning to be outside today. 84 inland, 73 by the bay. now to "today's" health.

how to not get sick on vacation. the best place to start, dr. raj is a contributor and editor of "heal "health" magazine and she's here to help us. now we have to worry about the hotel room? >> even the best of hotel rooms has health hazards for you. you want to have a healthy vacation. >> first of all, request a non-smoking room. >> absolutely. these days not just a non-smoking room but a non-smoking floor. if you are smelling smoke there are particles there that can give somebody ill effects of tobacco as well as dust mites, allergens might be lurking in the curtains, bedspreads. make sure you get the smoke-free floor. >> to stay healthy and sticker shock, avoid the mini bar. >> some say no drinking on vacation. but on the social occasions, it's too tempting to have those little bottles there at the mini bar.

they do still have the calories. what you can do is when you check in don't even take the mini bar. leave it at the front desk. you won't be tempted. save the drink for out of the room. >> you also say bring your own snacks. >> there are very few healthy snacks in the hotel rooms these days. lots of chips and cookies but it's hard to find something healthy. bing yo bring your own nuts and dried fruit is a good idea. you want to snack often because you don't want to wait for the two or three big meals for the day. >> once you're in the room, that top bedspread, get rid of it. >> this is a tip that people don't realize, they don't really clean that bedspread between customers. the sheets, they do. that little quilt thing, take it off, leave it on the floor or the closet because that could have other people's erm,s. >> okay, okay, let's leave it there. all righty, dr. raj. even though we know they've got the housekeeping you say it doesn't hurt to bring your own

disinfectant. i bring my own clorox wipes with me. >> absolutely. things like the remote control, the knobs on the tv, these are things that many people are touching. they're not often cleaned very well. you can get nasty germs, colds, viruss. >> and probably avoid the phone in the bathroom? >> yeah. exactly. you don't need to be talking on the phone when you're in the bathroom. if you are, use the wipes. >> and the gym, even if they don't have a gym where you're staying, you still can stay fit. >> this is not the time to take vacation from your exercise. you don't have to do the high-intensity workout like at home but take a walk around the new city that you're in, but sometimes people bring their own portable exercise kits, even doing yoga stretching in your room. you still want to be limber and active. >> avoid the reusable glasses in the room. >> i get suspicious if i see a glass that's not in a sealed plastic bag. i would not use it. even if they put a paper cup on top, you don't know how well they're cleaning it or if they're cleaning it.

use the plastic ones in the sealed bag or just drink out of a bottle. >> and you also say bring a white those generators, which they have apps for now on your phone. >> they do. it's great. even in very high-end hotel rooms you may have a noisy neighbor. you never know. if you are a light sleeper, bring something like that. >> you also say do a renovation check if they're doing work around the hotel. >> there's nothing worse than arriving at a hotel, paid a lot for the room and they happen to be doing major construction two doors down. it could ruin your trip. ask beforehand. >> could be stirring up stuff that maybe affect your allergies. >> yes, dust and things that trigger a bad allergy. >> safety tip, before you turn in you should note where the emergency exits are. >> yes. many hotels, i think almost all of them, have the stickers but no one pays attention. you should pay attention. god forbid, something happen, you need to know. >> go out and count the doors to the exit so you know in case there's smoke or whatever you can feel your way. >> absolutely. you should know where the exit

have something as your go-to. maybe put on your ipod, have great fabulous music, go out for a walk. call a friend, polish your nails or organize your purse. but anything. and if you do it over and over again, you are going to look at the food habit with this new hab habit. >> most of the time people eat when they're not hungry. >> yes. you can undo it. >> right. >> but you've got to strategize. >> here's another thing you've got to break the habit with, and that is overindulging on the weekends because a lot of people are good all week and say, okay, it's a little license on the weekend, i can have that piece of cake, i have a couple extra glasses of wine or two or three. >> i get it because we're structured during the week. we tend to eat light and then friday night rolls around and you totally fall off the wagon because you unwind. we avoid ourselves. the skinny solution is to selectively splurge on the weekend and it's the perfect compromise. i tell people to pick one or two splurges that they're going to look forward to and plan them

out. maybe it's a fun cocktail on saturday night. maybe french toast on sunday. but if you only have one or two things over the weekend, you're going to wake up monday morning feeling fabulous. you didn't derail anything. then you're right on track during the week. >> right on track. very good. another thing, i do this all the time. i know i'm not supposed to do it. >> i know what you're going to say. >> standing up while eating. it just takes too much effort to sit down. >> this is interesting because researchers just took two separate groups of people. the first group ate while standing up. the other group ate the same exact amounts of group while sitsing down. a few hours later when both groups went to eat another meal the standers ate 30% more calories than the sitters. and the researchers theorize when you eat standing up you don't psychologically register it as a real meal so then you give yourself permission to overeat at the next meal. the skinny solution is grab a chair, get down and stay a

while. focus on what you're eating. >> the other thing we're doing when we stand up and eat, we're eating straight out of the package half the time. i do that, as well. >> when you're eating out of an open-ended portion you tend to overse overeat. the key here is to ration out what you're going to eat, take a couple of handfuls, put it on a plate, put the package away, and you're most likely to stop at that one portion. >> okay. what mother or father hasn't done this? and that's grab bites from your kid's plate or the plate of your partner, radio it? >> that's right. >> another bad habit. >> i'm estimating if you had three small bites of macaroni and cheese off your kid's pla plate -- >> it doesn't count. >> but it's 150 calories. if you take a little piece for yourself of cheesecake, that could clock in 200 calories. so you really want to just stick with your own plate, the food that's on your own plate. if you don't want a taste or sample, take a slice off of their plate, their portion, put it on your plate and own it.

of atherton is taking the state's high-speed rail plan to court. at issue, the project's environmental impact report is based on flawed ridership numbers. the town says the report doesn't do enough to spell out the traffic impact of the new rail line. this is the second time environmental impact report has been challenged. it's planned as an 800-mile gway connecting with california. weather and traffic coming up right after this.

road. now between 100 and 150 fans we sit down for about an hour and eat with them and feed them a gourmet meal. not hot dogs and hamburgers. this ise serious stuff. we carry a bus full of chefs and hospitality to help pull this off. >> i love how you cut that out for the camera here. hi. how does this come about? this is something you serve with you're barbecue. >> it is. i grew up going to camp with my dad. where we would stay had fresh produce and everything. he would bring it over and we would cut everything up. >> cut up the cabbage. >> you can use a real knife at home to make life easier. >> yes. >> so you start off with the cabbage here. >> got the cabbage. what i like to do is take some of it and put it on the cabbage to help me get it on there. a little bit of sugar. got to have a little bit of sugar, a little bit of vinegar. >> white vinegar? >> uh-huh.

white vinegar. and then we're going to take a little bit of kosher salt. i like to salt it when we put it on the plate because the salt pulls the water out of the cabbage. you want to do that, the majority of the salting as you plate it, when you piut it on there. >> you see you fans. >> bring it on. what is that? >> cayenne pepper. got to have a little bit of kick. >> spice. >> a little bit of spice. here. and then put in the other one. green onion. >> green onion. >> yep. and pepper, yep. green bell pepper. tomato. i'm actually going to put that on top when i get that done. yellow mustard. i'm going to put these into -- here with the mayonnaise. and then the secret ingredient, ho horseradish. a little bit of yellow mustard in here. even if you don't like cole s w slaw. >> dessert, we're all about dessert. >> yeah. to go with it. >> this has every single thing i

would dream of. biscuits, pudding? >> yes. being from south louisiana i love bread puddings. i wanted to make one that was really moist and obviously chopped up. >> with eggs here? >> start off with two eggs here. we're going whip those up. and then i'm going to put a little bit of heavy cream and a little bit of half and half. and then a little bit of -- a lot of half and half. and then we're going put some sugar in there. >> definitely not low cal. >> no. >> not even thinking about calories, right? >> i take pretty good care of myself, health conscious. a little bit of melted butter. >> butter and heavy cream. >> yes. got that mixed together. we're going to pour that over the dry ingredients. this is biscuits and all you do is take it and crumble it up. maybe a day old biscuits, chocolate chips and peanut butter. put that over the top. mix that together.

>> fabulous. >> wow pudding? >> it is a wow pudding. >> mix it up really well. it can be separated a little bit because it's at room temperature, the chocolate, it will melt in the oven. >> you bake it in the oven. you have a top? >> i do. you mix it up well. it takes a few minutes to mix up and get all the ingredients combined. take a pan that has been greased and put it down in the pan. a little bit more mixed than that. and then cover it and bake it for an hour. but before that you want to put a little dash of sugar on top and give eigit a nice crust. an hour covered and then about 20 minutes uncovered. this is your final product. >> look at this gorgeous, too. well-done. he can cook, he can sing. all right. still to come, we've got one more song from the zac brown band coming right up, after

then driving away is now back behind bars. 21-year-old andrew pleaded not guilty to drunk driving and felony hit-and-run charges. he drove the wrong way up montgomery street in san francisco when he plowed into 9-year-old ryan white. white and his family were in town from philadelphia to watch the giants play the phillies at at&t park last thursday. his client is remorseful and ashamed but when questioned by reporters, the attorney lashed out calling it a media circus. >> why don't we do this. why don't we go back into the courtroom and this is where the case needs to be decided. let me show you where this is. it's called a courtroom. this is where justice is dispensed. >> vargas' next court is august 16th. white is still in serious condition at a san francisco hospital. he has broken bones and severe head injuries. time now for a quick on the

seeing here. >> it takes place in the south, in jackson, mississippi, in the 1960s, the beginning of the civil rights movement. and the relationships that form between the black maids and the white children, they help raise. which sometimes those bonds were stronger than the actual real parents of the kids. it's about voila davis' character, she plays aibilene who finally has to speak. she can't be silent any more. and the girl, emma stone plays my daughter and they meet up and she tells her story and what happens. >> does emma stone's character plays skeeter wants to leave and find her life as a writer. >> and i want her to be married. because it reflects badly on me if she's not married. and i think i know what's best for her. and as some parents do, they think they know what's best for their children. and it's wonderful, slightly different in the movie, because tate gave charlotte an arc, where they see each other for who they really are at the end.

elena is always at the end. we decided to bump her up to the front of the train. >> it takes a birthday to get me to the front of the line here. >> tell me what you're making. >> this is the deal. we're celebrating your birthday. we brought our favorite dishes from fresco. this is a great way to cleanse your palate before a meal. three simple ingredients. from raspberry puree syrup. lemon sorbet, and then prosecco. >> an it's very refreshing. wonderful for the summer. >> so while you're looking at the other recipes and helping the rest of the family cook, it's a great way to start the meal. >> thank you. >> so happy birthday! >> great. >> kathie lee's birthday? tuesday. >> mine don't count any more. >> this is your favorite. i'm seeing kathie lee's favorite. >> the polenta is unbelievable. >> so i'm doing our famous

creamy polenta. i am boiling the water. and milk. we're then going do add some polenta. when it reaches a boil, stir it in, it takes about six minutes until it actually absorbs all the liquid. uh-huh, uh-huh. >> and then our secret at fresco, is once it's done, we add marscapone. >> you know the first time i ever had it, i was in the restaurant. i wasn't on the show, it was years ago and al roker was sitting next to me. eating a plate of this stuff and i went -- what is this. and he said, you never had it? and he gave me a big bite. >> once you have one -- you'll never -- >> unbelievable. >> you'll always have a second. >> it's delicious. >> uh-huh. >> come here. >> come here -- okay, this, wait, we had this at our birthday lunch at scotto's. >> this is red snapper,ala hoda.

and the polenta is ala klg. >> i salted, peppered, sauteed it. now we start with our onion. and our garlic. >> of course. >> is there anything you make at the restaurant that doesn't have a little bit of garlic in it? >> we're italians, this is our perfume. you got to have a base of garlic or onion. >> it's so good for you. >> i love it. >> and then tomatoes. >> tomatoes. >> and corn. >> now you're really supposed to cook the cherrybm minutes, okay? >> okay. >> we don't have that time. and then you top it off with corn. >> who is better than you? >> nobody! >> wait a second. >> come on, anthony. kathie lee has been dying for this. >> how many years ago. >> how many years ago? >> at least ten. >> at least ten. about ten years ago, you came into the restaurant and you

wanted an idea for a new eggplant. you just didn't want eggplant. and you thought the idea was to add zucchini. >> i remember. >> and it's been that famous for that long at our restaurant. >> you kraelted it. >> you created it. >> kathie lee's creation. ricotta cheese, eggs, mozzarella and some parsley and salt and pepper. >> kathie, what we're going to do is flour, egg, we've got this right. and then egg, the bread crumbs, got that. we're frying it. once we've gotten them cool. once we've gotten them cool. we're going to start the layers. i start the bottom layer. exactly right. you're going to add a little ricotta cheese on top? and then we're going to lakem a zucchini and eggplant. >> and keep doing it until it's finished. >> get your fork in there. >> i love you guys. >> tomato, three layers. >> it's great. >> one of the greatest restaurants in all of new york. >> you guys, come back monday, we have jeff bridges and lynda
